VGC Klefki the weatherman

This team was formed around weather-setup options with Prankster. This guarantees getting the weather you want even against other weather-setters. Thunder Wave ended up having an equal importance to further establishing the team. Being flexible to different situations is my priority with this team.

Let's talk openers.

:klefki: + :exeggutor: or :heliolisk:
Use this opening to counter rain-setup as well as sandstorm(:exeggutor:)/hail(:heliolisk:).

:Klefki: + :Lapras:
Use this opening to counter utility teams as well as sun/sandstorm.

:Klefki: + :Hatterene:
Use this opening to disrupt your opponent.

:Hatterene: + :Exeggutor:
Use this opening to counter speed-centered teams.

My champions

Klefki
Prankster

Mental Herb

Bold
252 HP / 228 Def / 28 SpD

  • Rain Dance
  • Sunny Day
  • Thunder Wave
  • Dazzling Gleam

Klefki’s Prankster ability is the bread and butter of most of the strategies this team can choose from. Any opposing weather-setter will be cut off by Sunny Day or Rain Dance. Exeggutor thrives in the sun, Lapras and Scizor feel safer in the rain and Heliolisk is flexible to both weather-types. Thunder wave further supports the team by helping Lapras to go first or doubling down on Hatterene’s confusion. Mental herb protects Klefki against the popular move Taunt.

Exeggutor
Chlorophyll

Room Service

Modest
140 HP / 252 SpA / 116 Spe

  • Giga Drain
  • Expanding Force
  • Sludge Bomb
  • Trick Room

Exeggutor is a flexible pick that guarantees going early in different situations. Chlorophyll gives it the speed of a sweeper in sunlight while Room Service breaks it down for Trick Room. I decided to go with Expanding Force as it’s psychic move. When opening with Exeggutor and Sunny Day, he will most likely be Dyanamaxing which means it doesn’t matter much. When using Exeggutor for Trick Room, G-max Hatterene will likely set Psychic Terrain.

Lapras
Hydration

Life Orb

Modest
252 SpA / 4 Def / 252 Spe

  • Freeze-Dry
  • Hydro Pump
  • Ancient Power
  • Protect

G-max Lapras does what she always does. Within this team Hydration is just as important though. Lapras is the perfect choice against opponent’s that want to disrupt their opponent with Status control, like this team. The Aurora Veil effect punishes their low damage output while Hydration helps Lapras get rid of Paralysis and Sleep.

Heliolisk
Solar Power

Air Balloon

Timid
4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

  • Thunder
  • Hyper Voice
  • Weather Ball
  • Protect

Heliolisk is another flexible pick. Solar Power makes it stronger in the sun while Thunder will always hit in rain. Weather Ball further improves the flexibility of this pick. Since this pick will almost never be Dynamaxed, it runs the highest risk of getting one shot. Unfortunately Solar Power counteracts Focus Sash so I chose Air Balloon to protect it against one of it’s weaknesses.

Scizor
Technician

Assault Vest

Adamant
252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD

  • Bullet Punch
  • Dual Wingbeat
  • U-turn
  • Superpower

Scizor was originally chosen simply because Rain reduces the damage of his only weakness. He turns out to be much more important to the team than that. It’s not just a bulky hitter, it covers four move types that no other mon on the team has and is it’s only physical attacker. With it’s strong Attack and great Bulk it can actually come in clutch as a Dynamax later in the match.

Hatterene
Magic Bounce

Leftovers

Quiet
252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 SpD

  • Dazzling Gleam
  • Expanding Force
  • Mystical Fire
  • Trick Room

Hatterene is your opponent’s worst nightmare. When she’s not just destroying their team under Trick Room she confuses them while Klefki Paralyses them. Mystical Fire adds a move that can be boosted by one of Klefki’s weather-moves. Since Hatterene will always Gigantamax and has the bulk to power through it, Expanding Force is the obvious choice.
