Excadrill is a powerful attacker in the 1v1 metagame due to its well-rounded stats, great typing, and access to the game changing ability Mold Breaker. Earthquake acts as a powerful STAB move that allows Excadrill to OHKO Duraludon, Aegislash, and Galarian Weezing. Iron Head allows Excadrill to OHKO Mimikyu, Sylveon, and Crustle. Mold Breaker allows Excadrill to ignore Sturdy and Disguise from Crustle and Mimikyu. Swords Dance allows it to act as a wall breaker, dealing with Galarian Corsola, and Milotic. Life Orb gives Excadrill a strong boost in damage while allowing it to utilize Substitute and Swords Dance. Substitute acts as a defensive option for Excadrill, allowing it to block opposing Will-O-Wisps, Strength Saps, and Leech Seeds from Pokemon such as Corsola-Galar, Eldegoss, and Ferrothorn. Substitute can also provide opportunities to safely use Swords Dance. 252 Speed EVs allow Excadrill to outspeed Pokemon with base 75 Speed such as Choice Band Dracozolt, which would otherwise easily OHKO Excadrill with Earthquake. 36 Special Defense EVs allow Excadrill to survive a Fire Blast from Timid Togekiss and OHKO with Iron Head. 220 Attack EVs with an Adamant nature give Excadrill highest Attack possible while remaining at the necessary benchmarks, as well as securing the guaranteed KO against Milotic with a +2 Earthquake.
Excadrill appreciates teammates that can deal with fast attackers like Dragapult, Haxorus, and Galarian Darmanitan. Pokemon like Milotic and stall Arcanine work well in this role. In return, Excadrill can beat many of the bulky walls and wall breakers that beat these Pokemon such as Goodra, Corsola-Galar, Duraludon, and Aegislash. Pokemon able to deal with fast Fire-type Pokemon like Cinderace and Choice Scarf Rotom-Heat, such as Milotic, Crustle, and Choice Scarf Dracovish, make strong teammates for Excadrill. Excadrill in return can defeat bulky Steel- and Fairy-types that threaten these Pokemon, such as Duraludon and Fake Tears Sylveon.
