Looking For Competitive Battling Tips, New Player

Hello everyone, im new to 5th gen battling and have been having a lot of trouble building a decent team, i make one team and destroys one person then gets destroyed by the next. Does anyone have some tips to help me out or any recommendations as to which pokemon i should use?? Thanks

You should try signing up for the next tutoring session.

You're not going want to hear this but the best tip I could give to you is

Make a team to the best of your ability
Play lots of games with it
Understand why you keep losing (if you keep winning then you don't need the help huh? :p)
Find a solution to the threats of your team
Play lots of games with it
Understand why you keep losing
Find a solution to the threats of your team
Play lots of games with it
Understand why you keep losing
Find a solution to the threats of your team
Play lots of games with it
Understand why you keep losing
Find a solution to the threats of your team
etc

Keep doing that until you feel you have a great team on your hands. Trial and error.

Signing up for the next tutoring session will help alot, but also joining irc channels and having discussions will benefit your general competitive knowledge. Like AfroThunder said, most of the pokemon skill set is self discovered rather than taught, and laddering extensively is imo the best way to learn. Only by laddering and being in battles will you get a natural feel for the metagame, and be able to make smarter plays/predictions/teams.
