Luck Free Metagame?

Would you play a metagame that left literally nothing to chance? A metagame that had literally no random effects, and everything was down to skill and prediction?

Specifically:
  • All moves are 100% accurate
    • Moves have their base power multiplied by their accuracy
  • Moves can not have random side effects
    • No critical hits. Moves with a high CH ratio receive a BP increase
    • The moves may receive stipends to make up for their lost effect. For example, thunderbolt takes away a miniscule amount of speed every time it hits to make up for the fact it can't paralyze anymore, and mud slap gives an attack reduction proportional to the accuracy lost.
    • The exceptions are when the side effects are certain or nearly certain. For example, zap cannon is a base 50 power move that is certain to paralyze, while charge beam is a 31.5 base power move that is certain to raise special attack
  • The general goal is to make moves similar to what they would be in the current metgame, but without chance
    • Thunder has 84 BP in normal weather, 120 in the rain and 60 in the sun
    • High jump kick has 90 BP, and does 5% recoil every time it is used. If it is used against a ghost or pokemon that is digging or flying, its recoil is half the damage that would have been done if it were a 100 BP move.
    • Protect stops the attack on the first consecutive use, halves the damage on the second, reduces by a quarter on the 3rd etc.. Endure just won't work if used consecutively.
    • The pokemon brought out after roar is based on a predetermined order
  • Status works very differently
    • Paralysed pokemon receive a small attack reduction, but are never fully paralysed
    • Moves that would cause pokemon to flinch instead reduce the incoming attack power by the % flinch chance with certainty. Fake out still works exactly the same as before.
    • Attract halves both attack and special attack when the infatuated pokemon is still on the field.
    • Freeze no longer exists
    • Confusion reduces attack power and does recoil damage, in proportion to how often they would hurt themselves in confusion
    • The duration of sleep depends solely on the accuracy of the sleep move.
  • Many abilities change
    • Poison point = rough skin
    • Static gives minor speed reductions if hit with contact moves
    • Flame body gives minor attack reductions as well as having a rough skin effect.
    • Effect spore minorly reduces attack and speed and does minor damage upon being hit.
    • Shed skin removes status with certainty after 3 turns
    • Serene grace doubles the intensity of the side effects that replace luck.
    • No idea how to balance cute charm. Perhaps it induces a weaker version of attract with certainty.
    • Sand veil and Snow Cloak increase both defenses by 20%
    • Compound eyes gives a 30% attack boost
    • Hustle gives a 40% attack boost, no strings attached.
    • Pokemon with inner focus don't receive attack drops from flinch moves
    • No guard gives moves their original BP back
    • Super luck gives an attack boost
    • Sniper gives an attack boost, and increases the power boost on moves with high CH ratios
    • Battle armor and shell armor give defense boosts
    • Anger nerve minorly increases attack upon every hit, moreso if by a move with a high CH rate
  • Hax items have expected effects
    • Scope lens and Razor Claw give attack boosts
    • Brightpowder gives defense boosts
Good idea?

This is cool, except you're not playing Pokemon anymore =/

It might be a fun game, but it isn't Pokemon.

EDIT: it's like if M:tG or other TCG players decided "You know what? Let's stop shuffling our decks. That's not fair. Let's just let everybody stack their decks however they want." Doesn't that sound ridiculous? That's what you're proposing =(

The reason for this is because Double Team and OHKO moves are banned because they rely too much on luck. However there is still a lot of luck present in Pokemon. It would be interesting to see how it would play out if luck was removed entirely.

As said, it's a very major element of the game. Shoddy is meant to be accurate to the game so it wouldn't happen in Shoddy. It is interesting though, as many more random moves would become much more rampant like Sing or whatever.

I will never play a battle with absolutely no form of hax.

That's not what Pokemon is.

Sure hax can be brutal and can be extremely frustrating, especially when you have gathered 6 Calm Mind boosts only to be crit by Gengar's Thunderbolt. That's what makes competitive battling fun, pressuring, frustrating, etc. You never know what can happen in a battle, the tables can turn around in a split second.

It's something you have to get used to, but I enjoy hax and hate hax at the same time, but that's Pokemon.

As a follow up question:

Given that risks and luck are an integral part of pokemon battling, why do the OHKO and Evasion Clauses exist?

I disagree because we are trying to stimulate link battles, aren't we?

Crits are the part of the game and should be the part of the shoddy as well.

There are simply no viable counters to both OHKO moves and Double Team abuse?

I don't know enough to reasonably argue though, as it is a valid question I guess. But things like Lock On + OHKO and Double Team abuse forcing you to rely on like a 5% chance of hitting a Pokemon do seem inherently broken.

I'm going to agree with everyone else so far as well. Even though luck is annoying, without it, Pokemon wouldn't be Pokemon, now would it?

I actually this idea. But I think you are suggesting too mcuh at once. I would prefera slow and gradual change to get people more adjusted.

Like I don't think crits should be in the game. If you are relying on a random crit to comeback, you don't deserve it. If you get a random crit, it just shifts the battle randomly (most cases), which isn't good imo.

Also Freeze is lame. Who has heard of 13 turns of freeze =\ It should be reworked or something.

I believe OHKO and Evasion moves are supposed to be tested sometime in the foreseeable future. I can't remember if there was ever a timetable set for the tests, though.

I'm not suggesting this would be the main way of playing, but as an alternative style on a different server (which I wouldn't be able to set up, but theoretically), would you play it?

No, this wouldn't be pokemon anymore. Sure, someone can experiment, they have that right. However, I would not play it. Hell, prediction can involve luck, because even if you read your opponent perfectly, they may make an irrational move that could alter the game. Sure, it is the player to blame, but psychology isn't a defined science, and thus, it appears to be more luck than anything else.

I personally don't like the idea. The risk/luck factor in the metagame makes it more fun in my opinion.

Quoted for the truth.

Yes, hax can be annoying, but it is a part of the ygame. Also, even if this idea did go ahead, the only people who would win consistently would be like 10 people or so, since there is NO luck involved at all.

We try to simulate wireless battles as closely as possible, and yes we do have clauses like evasion and OHKO but these changes have actually worked in favour for the game.

Your idea is a great one, and I'm sure you could find people who would be willing to play it, but I just don't think it is pokémon.

EDIT: you could make a modified shoddy server if you do find people who want to play that.

I believe OHKO and Evasion moves are supposed to be tested sometime in the foreseeable future. I can't remember if there was ever a timetable set for the tests, though.
I don't see why OHKO moves are banned. Their accuracy is so poor very few people would use them anyway, and those that did would most likely find themselves missing. A LOT. Sure, Articuno can Lock On + Sheer Cold but... well, maybe then people might actually use Articuno. Although double stealth rock weakness... not favourable...

what difference does it make, that's a loaded question because "theoretically" doesnt exist when colin and doug and bearzly are basically of the only people who would know how to code this for shoddy and their time is and will be better spent on shoddy battle 2 and/or various other server responsibilities

if you made this server and didnt have to enlist the resources of the people i named then maybe your 25-word theoretical question would be more fair to everyone else, but even then it's not poekmon. if you have a problem with the luck in pokemon deal with it or dont play it, this is seriously an age-old question that will never go anywhere
