Week 19: Utility Ferrothorn
ferrothorn-4.gif

Ferrothorn @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 88 Def / 168 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Leech Seed
- Gyro Ball
- Power Whip

Ferrothorn is a really good defensive mon, as it's able to take hits fairly well from the physical and special side, while only retaining 2 weaknesses (fire and fighting) and resisting 10 types (including the immunity to poison). It's able to learn Stealth Rock and Spikes, so it's able to be used for either of those if necessary. It's able to check multiple threats most notable water types like Suicune, who allow Ferrothorn to use Leech Seed to recover, while setting up hazards at will. It's also able to put pressure on hazard removers this way as it can use Leech Seed to drain HP while the opponent removes hazards, and then set them up again to force them back in, or continue to lose health from the Leech Seed.

bisharp.gif

Bisharp @ Leftovers
Ability: Defiant
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly / Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Taunt
- Iron Head / Low Kick
- Sucker Punch

I know Taunt Bisharp is somewhat standard, but I didn't want to do something like HP Fire Kyu-B, or Manaphy. Since Ferrothorn gets shut down by Taunt, against Bisharp, it can't do anything. Basically, you can use Ferrothorn as setup fodder, and if the opponent is Bisharp weak, you just win. Low Kick is for a OHKO on Ferrothorn after Rocks, if you don't want to deal with wasting Sucker Punches + Iron Barbs + potential Rocky Helmet. Taunt can also be used to beat Skarm, Chansey, etc. A Focus Sash can be used to basically always get a SD up. However, I think wish killer's cash Leftovers Bisharp is much better, since you heal off the damage you take. I don't know his set for the bulk, but I just maximized speed/attack to tie with base 70's and not lose to the likes priority in general.

+2 252 Atk Life Orb Bisharp Low Kick (100 BP) vs. 252 HP / 88+ Def Ferrothorn: 369-437 (104.8 - 124.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO

pretty cool set, sorry if it was standard though, abusing a pokes weakness gets sometimes annoying lol. you'd be better off running hp fire milotic.

HP Fire Mega Diancie
diancie-mega.gif

Diancie-Mega @ Diancite
Ability: Magic Bounce
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Moonblast
- Diamond Storm
- Protect

252 SpA Mega Diancie Hidden Power Fire vs. 252 HP / 168 SpD Ferrothorn: 236-280 (67 - 79.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Beware that since you are OHKOed by Gyro Ball, the only chance to hit Ferrothon is when it switches in.
While once you have predicted it successfully, you will be able to keep wiping and it won't dare to appear against M-Diancie after that, excepting receiving a Wish/Healing Wish.
It is not an unexpectable set,but I saw more Earth Power on Diancie and infrequently met HP Fire, maybe for Heatran.

Yay I won :D. Fairies will eventually rule. Today tho something different

Slowbro @ Leftovers
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 232 Def / 24 SpD
Bold Nature
- Fire Blast
- Scald
- Thunder Wave
- Slack Off

Fireblast is very rare on Slowbro and as a result many Ferro user's see slowbro as an oppurtunity to stack hazards or leech health off it via leech seed and rarely scout. Slowbro is not only able to nail it on the switch it can potentially beat it on a clean switch to since power whip does not OHKO back. Fire blast also has usage beyond ferro also luring in other mons

0 SpA Slowbro Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 168 SpD Ferrothorn: 244-288 (69.3 - 81.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Superpower Mamoswine

Mamoswine @ Life Orb
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Ice Shard
- Earthquake
- Icicle Crash
- Superpower

Use Earthquake with Mamoswine forcing an initial switch while Ferrothorn enters:
252 Atk Life Orb Mamoswine Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 88+ Def Ferrothorn: 142-169 (40.3 - 48%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

and you can finish the opponent with Superpower
252 Atk Life Orb Mamoswine Superpower vs. 252 HP / 88+ Def Ferrothorn: 229-270 (65 - 76.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
===> Ferrothorn is dealt at least 105,3% damage-6% from the first turn of lefties = 99,3%

Normally, Mamoswine is able to 3HKO Ferrothorn with Earthquake and might 3HKO after lefties with Icicle Crash if you hit whereas Ferrothorn OHKOes it with back Gyro Ball. Superpower takes away a good junk of Ferrothorn's health forcing a subsequent switch-out after the stats drop. If you want to use this lure keep in mind that now bulky waters i.e. Rotom-W are safe from Freeze Dry.

Jolly is chosen over Adamant plus Speed EVs in order to outspeed Breloom, Bisharp, Gallade before it Mega Evolves, and bulky Jirachi and set up Stealth Rock before it gets hit.

GDI I was literally just posting Mamoswine lol.

raikou.gif

Raikou @ Choice Specs
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Volt Switch
- Hidden Power Fire
- Shadow Ball

Ferrothorn is a GSI to Raikou, as even with choice specs, Raikou can't even 4HKO Ferrothorn with any of its normal moves (shadow ball does maximum 30% which has a 2% chance to 4HKO after leftovers and some sets don't even run that). Ferrothorn can then leech Seed the obvious switch or 2HKO Raikou with power whip. However, HP fire is a solid 2HKO:

252 SpA Choice Specs Raikou Hidden Power Fire vs. 252 HP / 168 SpD Ferrothorn: 276-328 (78.4 - 93.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

HP fire also hits the likes of Scizor and other grass types which resist volt switch / thunderbolt. Raikou does miss the ice coverage but shadow ball does more damage to Latios, Hippowdon doesn't care too much about HP ice regardless, and using Raikou as your Lando/Chomp check isn't exactly the best idea as it fears scarf/yache variants and can't switch in anyway.

Rotom-Wash @ Expert Belt
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 120 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpA / 132 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 30 SpA / 30 Spe
- Volt Switch
- Hidden Power Fire
- Signal Beam / Will-O-Wisp
- Hydro Pump

Random mon with hp fire that doesnt do anything else besides luring ferro... surprisingly, this isnt the case. Offensive rotom-wash is a really interesting lure that lures ferrothorn decently well and, funnily enough, it is even better at luring latis... but lets focus on the spiky thingy, This can be disguised as a chesto rest rotom-w or even scarf considering the damage output cant be disguised. Anyways

252+ SpA Expert Belt Rotom-W Hidden Power Fire vs. 252 HP / 168 SpD Ferrothorn: 230-274 (65.3 - 77.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Then ferrothorn cant beat your washing machine 1v1, fantastic.

Signal Beam hits Lati as well but also Hoopa-U and Celebi, think it's superior in this slot

black_kyurem_sprite_by_limit_vanitas-d5qn0y8.png

Kyurem-Black @ Life Orb
Ability: Teravolt
EVs: 20 Atk / 252 SpA / 236 Spe
IVs: 30 SpA / 30 Spe
Mild Nature
- Ice Beam
- Earth Power
- Fusion Bolt
- Hidden Power Fire

Hidden Power Fire is a really cool option on Kyurem-Black, and it's pretty uncommon and surprises most opponents. Generally, Ferrothorn is a decent check to Kyurem-B, being able to OHKO with Gyro Ball or recover HP with Leech Seed. However, Hidden Power Fire does massive damage to Ferrothorn, easily KOing it after any switch in to any other of Kyurem-B's attacks. Hidden Power Fire also targets the likes of Scizor and Mega Scizor and OHKOs both, the two of which are able to comfortably switch into most of its attacks.

252+ SpA Life Orb Teravolt Kyurem-B Hidden Power Fire vs. 252 HP / 168 SpD Ferrothorn: 270-322 (76.7 - 91.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

jirachi.gif

Jirachi @ Expert Belt
Ability: Serene Grace
EVs: 132 Atk / 160 SpA / 216 Spe
Mild Nature
- Iron Head
- Icy Wind
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Thunderbolt

Typically Ferrothorn is a safe switch in for Jirachi, who's typically either Scarf or Specially Defensive. Scarf has to predict the switch with Fire Punch in order to get anywhere, while SpDef is completely walled. EBelt Rachi allows it to pretend it's the former set, baiting Ferrothorn in with a weak Iron Head and then surprising it with Hidden Power and forcing it out. The hit itself isn't really that impressive but given how Ferrothorn has some pretty limited recovery it's enough to allow Rachi's teammates to break past it.

160+ SpA Expert Belt Jirachi Hidden Power Fire vs. 252 HP / 168 SpD Ferrothorn: 206-245 (58.5 - 69.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Latios @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Psyshock
- Hidden Power Fire
- Roost / Defog

Ferrothorn is a good switchin to the standard Defog / Roost / Dual STAB set because it resists both Psyshock and Draco Meteor. However, HP Fire takes at least 75% of Ferrothorns health, so Psyshock + HP Fire has a decent chance to 2HKO Ferrthorn, while 2x HP Fire is obviously guaranteed to kill Ferrothorn.

252 SpA Life Orb Latios Hidden Power Fire vs. 252 HP / 168 SpD Ferrothorn: 265-312 (75.2 - 88.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

manaphy.gif

Manaphy @ Leftovers
Ability: Hydration
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 30 SpA / 30 Spe
- Tail Glow
- Scald
- Hidden Power Fire
- Energy Ball / Psychic / Shadow Ball

Even though HP Fire is slashed on the main set, the move itself isn't used very often (last month HP Fire was used less than 10% of the time around the 1500 and 1825 elos, and in 8.75% of the time around the 1695 elo). In my books, that counts as a lure. Indeed, without HP Fire, Manaphy can only 3HKO Ferrothorn with Ice Beam at +3! A somewhat realistic scenario would be having Manaphy against a a favorable matchup, say Hippowdon. Hippowdon switches out to Ferrothorn to check Manaphy as the latter sets up a Tail Glow. After that, Manaphy simply has to click HP Fire to OHKO the poor Ferrothorn who never saw it coming. HP Fire is also useful to deal with M-Scizor.
+3 252 SpA Manaphy Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 168 SpD Ferrothorn: 156-184 (44.3 - 52.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

0 Atk Ferrothorn Power Whip vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Manaphy: 246-290 (72.1 - 85%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
+3 252 SpA Manaphy Hidden Power Fire vs. 252 HP / 168 SpD Ferrothorn: 416-492 (118.1 - 139.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Natural Gift Gyarados
gyarados.gif

Gyarados @ Cheri Berry
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 88 HP / 220 Atk / 4 Def / 196 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Bounce/Substitute/Coverage
- Waterfall
- Natural Gift

Ferrothorn usually hard walls gyarados, but natural gift when equipped with a fire type berry can really lure in and devastate ferrothorn. If you DD on the switch, you have a guarenteed OHKO vs ferrothorn regardless of what berry your gyarados is holding. If you are paranoid about being paralyzed by twave from mons like thundy and klefki, then you should equip a cheri berry to avoid these paras and fire back with a boosted attack. If you really want some extra power, then you can get a watamel berry, but the only KO it gets is +3 nat gift vs skarm after rocks which rarely happens.

Feraligatr
@ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Waterfall
- Crunch
- Superpower

From my experience, Superpower is usually overlooked in favor of Ice Punch + Crunch. This is because Ice Punch offers Feraligatr a wider ranger of coverage, hitting Mega Altaria, defensive Garchomp, and numerous grass types like Amoonguss, Serperior, and Chesnaught. As such, Ferrothorn is frequently used as a response to Gatr since Superpower is relatively uncommon, although not unheard of. After a DD, Gatr hits unsuspecting Ferro for 83.5 - 98.8%. With some prior damage, which isn't too hard to get on Ferro, it's a goner. While Superpower is mainly used for Ferro, it's also useful for hitting Kyurem-B, who otherwise walls Gatr easily. Long story short, similar to other Pokemon like HP Fire Manaphy, Gatr takes advantage of Superpower's decently low usage to lure Ferro.

Expert Belt Tyranitar
tyranitar.gif

Tyranitar @ Expert Belt
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Stone Edge / Stealth Rock
- Pursuit / Stealth Rock
- Ice Beam
- Fire Blast

Good 'ol Lure Tyranitar. This set is great for luring in common leads like Garchomp and Landorus, as well as luring in Ferrothorn in this example. Fire Blast is used here with an Expert Belt and max Special Attack in order to OHKO these threats. Stealth Rock can also be used in place of Stone Edge or Pursuit, depending on what your team needs. This set still is able to check the things that Tyranitar is already able to check, such as Charizard X, for example. Ferrothorn users will generally believe that this is the support set with Chople Berry or Smooth Rock which generally carries Ice Beam, and even if it carries Fire Blast, support Tyranitar is not OHKO'ing Ferrothorn like this set will, so it will catch the opponent off guard a lot of the time. Naive is the nature I prefer using for this set because I want to make sure that I have an easier time fighting physical attackers and not take too much damage damage from Tank Chomp/Lando, while also taking priority attacks better, and the Special Defense from Sandstorm is still helpful for helping Tyranitar take hits on the special side even with a SpD- nature. This is a set that I greatly appreciate and one that I have been having a lot of fun using as of late.

252 SpA Expert Belt Tyranitar Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 168 SpD Ferrothorn: 355-422 (100.8 - 119.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 SpA Expert Belt Tyranitar Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Garchomp: 437-518 (104 - 123.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 SpA Expert Belt Tyranitar Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 8 SpD Landorus-T: 456-538 (119.3 - 140.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

4 Atk Expert Belt Tyranitar Stone Edge vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Mega Charizard X: 305-360 (102.6 - 121.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 SpA Expert Belt Tyranitar Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 112 SpD Hippowdon: 216-257 (51.4 - 61.1%) -- 95.3% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

252 SpA Expert Belt Tyranitar Fire Blast vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Bisharp: 312-367 (115.1 - 135.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 SpA Expert Belt Tyranitar Fire Blast vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Excadrill: 329-389 (91.1 - 107.7%) -- 43.8% chance to OHKO

4 Atk Expert Belt Tyranitar Pursuit vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Latios: 161-194 (53.8 - 64.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after sandstorm damage (OHKO's on switchout)

252 SpA Expert Belt Tyranitar Fire Blast vs. 248 HP / 200 SpD Mega Scizor: 384-456 (111.9 - 132.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO
