LC Magby

[OVERVIEW]

Magby is one of the premier Belly Drum sweepers in the tier with its combination of a good Speed tier, solid coverage, and priority. However, it is outclassed outside of hyper offense builds by Vulpix and Ponyta, and it can end up being useless if Belly Drum fails to go off, meaning that Magby must be played carefully and supported.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Fire Punch hits for big damage at +6, OHKOing all neutral targets in the tier and even some resistant targets. Thunder Punch serves as Magby's best coverage move, allowing it to hit Water-types like Mareanie and Frillish, which would otherwise stop a sweep. Mach Punch hits Rock-types that resist Fire Punch like Onix and Tyrunt; it also allows Magby to beat slower priority users like Pawniard and faster Pokemon like Choice Scarf Porygon.

Set Details
========

29 HP IVs drop Magby's HP to an even number so that Belly Drum activates Berry Juice, restoring Magby back to full HP. The given EVs and nature maximize Magby's Speed and Attack, letting it reach a high 19 Speed. Vital Spirit allows Magby to absorb Spore and set up on Foongus. Alternatively, Flame Body gives it a chance to burn priority users, which means that a Fake Out from Mienfoo or Grookey might stop them from interrupting Magby's sweep.

Usage Tips
========

Magby should be brought in on double switches, after a sacrifice, with Teleport after dual screens have been set, or after a Memento, as it is incredibly frail and will not be able to take advantage of Belly Drum if it is chipped. Magby excels at cleaning weakened teams, so Magby teams should actively search for opportunities to sweep once checks like Onix and Staryu have been weakened. After Magby has a clear path to winning the game, carefully select a chance to use Belly Drum, as it can only use Belly Drum once. Magby's Speed can also let it force out foes to get a setup opportunity.

Team Options
========

Natu or another dual screens setter is almost a must-bring; without one, Magby's chances to set up are severely limited. Magby also enjoys not getting chipped when it switches in, meaning that Teleport support from the aforementioned Natu or Memento support from Diglett greatly helps it. Magby also synergizes well with other common dual screens sweepers that are also checked by Onix, like Tyrunt; this is because they each weaken Onix for the others to sweep.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Magby can run a mixed Life Orb set with Fire Blast, Psychic, Thunder Punch, and Mach Punch with 15/15 attacking stats; this set, however, is heavily outclassed by Ponyta as a 19 Speed Fire-type and by Vulpix as a Fire-type wallbreaker. This set is also worn down very quickly by Life Orb recoil and entry hazards. Magby struggles to run any moves not already listed on its main set. Brick Break is an option to get past bulky checks like Onix without prior chip damage, but the cost of dropping Thunder Punch or Mach Punch is too high. Dual Chop allows Magby to break the Focus Sashes of Pokemon like Abra; however, Dual Chop is otherwise useless. Protect can be used to avoid the damage from Fake Out, but giving up a coverage move entirely is ill-advised, especially when considering Flame Body can also punish Fake Out.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Priority**: Priority in the form of Fake Out from Mienfoo or Grookey, or from Pokemon bulky enough to survive +6 Mach Punch, like Timburr, can chip Magby and knock it out before a sweep can happen.

**19-20 Speed Pokemon**: Healthy 19 Speed Pokemon like Staryu and Galarian Ponyta can put an end to Magby's sweep by winning the Speed tie. Eviolite Diglett can survive a +6 Mach Punch from full and OHKO back with Earthquake. Abra is of special note, as it often carries a Focus Sash, which guarantees that it will be able to survive one hit and OHKO with Psychic.

**Onix**: Onix is incredibly bulky and can survive a Mach Punch even after Magby has set up. However, Magby teams can chip Onix or remove its Eviolite to make a sweep possible.

  • Mention in the overview that Magby fits best (and almost exclusively) on HO
  • The set should have an HP IV on 29 to drop to 20 HP so that BD always triggers juice
  • Not sure if Vital Spirit is preferred but Flame Body should at least be slashed because the burn chances can screw over stuff like Grookey and Mienfoo spamming Fake Out
  • I would not describe 19 speed as "uncontested"
  • Emphasize that juice healing Magby to full helps save it from being whittled down by Fake Out and other prio, rather than eating a regular attack
  • I don't know if bringing in Magby on sleep moves is good advice since Hypno Pix is extremely rare and coming in on Foongus Sludge hurts a ton
  • For usage tips, instead o just saying "use magby late game," I'd talk about looking for opportunities to click BD vs mons that can't OHKO or status you when Magby's path is clear
  • I do not think Magby is often on teams with removal given HO rarely brings it, and also clicking BD from 75% is not a big deal; you can maybe mention using Natu + offensive pressure to deny rocks, but it's not hugely important to the mon
  • By the same measure, I don't think Magby is often coming in off Mienfoo and especially Vull uturns; Grookey may be more likely, and also good free switches are Natu Teleport and Memento users
  • Mention that the LO set is mixed with Flare Blitz and Psychic. This set is not very weak and I don't think it's in direct competition with BD Magby for a teamslot, so i wouldn't bother with the comparison; the more important comparison is that Magby is outclassed as an offensive fire type by Ponyta and wears down very quickly with LO and rocks
  • I don't think you need to say that Diglett is the only relevant pokemon at 20 speed
  • Spritzee dies to +6 Fire Punch after rocks, so Onix is the big name here. You might consider making this bullet point just Onix

[OVERVIEW]

  • one of the premier belly drum sweepers in the tier
  • good speed tier + decent coverage and priority make it difficult to stop once it manages to set up
  • outclassed in other roles, as Vulpix and Ponyta are much better fire type breakers outside of Magby's niche of having access to belly drum
  • still has a solid niche on HO from being very strong and taking advantage of the screens support commonly utilized on HO builds
  • would also mention how it only gets 1 chance to set up and is pretty weak otherwise which can make it a wasted slot sometimes

Moves
========

  • belly drum enables magby to start sweeping
  • fire punch plus thunder punch is solid neutral coverage, being only resisted by a few pokemon in the tier separate these into 2 sentences, just say fire punch basically kills anything unresisted and then mention what specific pokemon thunder punch hits eg. marinara
  • mach punch rounds out magby's coverage; it also allows magby to avoid priority moves and knock out pokemon faster than it

Set Details
========
  • vital spirit allows magby to set up on sleep users like foongus is there actually any other sleep user in the tier?
  • alternatively, flame body gives magby a chance to burn priority users, making the damage that fake outs from mienfoo or grookey might do negligible
  • berry juice synergizes with belly drum by returning magby to full after the move is used, allowing it to survive priority moves
  • 29 HP IVs are used to drop magby's hp to an even number so that belly drum does 50% and procs berry juice
  • the given EVs and nature max out magby's speed and attack, letting it hit a high 19 speed while also allowing it to hit as hard as possible

Usage Tips
========

magby should be brought in during double switches, after a sac, or after a memento/teleport after screens have been set, as it is incredibly frail and will not be able to take advantage of belly drum if it is chippped. magby excels at cleaning weakened teams, so magby teams should actively search for opportunities to get set up after magby has a clear path to winning the game. also that the opposing team needs to be worn down for that
mention how sometimes you can set up on aggressive predictions eg if u bring in magby on a pawn and threaten with mach punch u can potentially click bd and win. magby gets a ton of opportunities like that cuz its super fast and has good coverage but u do need to position it rlly carefully

Team Options

magby greatly benefits from screens support, meaning that natu is almost a must-bring; without it, magby's chances to set up are severely limited. magby also enjoys not having to get chipped when it switches in, meaning that teleport support from the aforementioned natu or memento support allows it to switch in freely and set up a belly drum.
are there any specific screens/ho sweepers that synergize with magby? stuff like np vull to wear down onix come to mind, if u could get a few of those that be cool

  • brick break is an option to get past bulky checks like onix, but the cost of dropping thunder punch or mach punch is too high to run this specific coverage move
  • dual chop allows magby to break the sashes of pokemon like abra; however, dual chop is otherwise useless

Checks and Counters
===================

**Priority:** priority in the form of fake out from mienfoo or grookey, or from pokemon bulky enough to survive +6 mach punch, like timburr, can chip magby to the point a sweep is no longer possible

**19-20 speed Pokemon:** healthy 19 speed pokemon can put an end to magby's sweep, as magby will have to win a speed tie in order to ko them. diglett can only survive a +6 mach punch with an eviolite; however, if diglett does have an eviolite it will always stop a magby sweep. abra is of special note, as it often carries a focus sash, which allows it to take a magby hit and ohko back

**Onix:** onix is incredibly defensively bulky, and can survive a mach punch from magby even after magby has set up. it is imperative that enemy onix are chipped or that their eviolites are removed before magby attempts a sweep

Reordering mostly; just C+P this tbh. make sure the spacing is correct tho

Magby's speed Speed can also allow it to force 50/50s between situations of knocking out an opponent's pokemon and Pokemon or setting up a Belly Drum, which can also allow Magby to begin attempt a sweep. I think the wording of this is better
