Magic: The Gathering

Another peek at RtR:

Looks like a limited common if that... lets hope something cool with unleash comes along.

I smell Bonfire of the Damned. Only reasonable explanation I can think of.

Just an announcement of that would cause the prices to drop, hopefully.

I mean, I want to play tournaments as much as the next guy, but I'm not paying $60+ for one card.

I did recently end up paying for four Restoration Angel cards at $12 each though.

Edit: Unleash looks interesting. Grim Roustabout, not so much. A 1/1/ that becomes a 2/2/ by giving up the ability to block isn't that great. Regenerate is kind of nice though, I guess.

@ Forte: Hopefully they do something with unleash... and I still remeber when Bonfire was $5(:

PAX Tonight at 7... more spoilers... and by some art... I'd say Shocks are coming back.

Proof

Perhaps the rare will have something like "this creature has double strike as long as it has a +1/+1 counter on it" or something.

The shockland arts have already been spoiled by someone who hacked open the source code for the Art Fight facebook app.

Why would they not? It's barely stronger than Goblin Guide, and in most cases will be worse. 1/1 haste unleash for R is fine. It'll only see play in RDW, maybe Modern RUG Delver lists.

I could imagine a Rakdos spell or enchantment giving creatures double strike as long as they had a +1/+1 counter, or giving a creature a +1/+1 counter and first strike, or something,

+1/+1 counters are always good for interactions, but I agree in that the creatures Unleash is printed on need to be really good for the mechanic to take off. I would say a 1/1 haste unleash for R would be on the limit of Standard playable, anything else will barely make the cut in Limited, let alone Constructed.

Goblin Guide was a rare case I suppose... that and they stopped putting Bolt in core sets (at least right now).

EDIT:

IDK... they printing Vexing Devil(:

The mechanic itself is pretty bad. Scavenge isn't much worse than Unearth and Overload turns Shocks into Pyroclasms. Meanwhile, Populate is a really crappy copy effect and Unleash arguably has a bigger downside than upside. :/ I mean you could design a card to abuse any mechanic, even the really shitty ones, but that doesn't make the mechanic itself any less crappy.

Bloodthirst 10, ~ is unblockable.
Bushido 10, Trample.
Unearth WWUUBBRRGG on Mindless Null
Overload XXX on Ember Shot.

Any given card with a particular mechanic could be good or bad but you'd be hard-pressed to say, oh, Radiance is stronger than Dredge in general. Persist to Undying is a nice apples-to-apples comparison that I can definitively point to and say yes, one is flat-out better than the other.

populate seems cool now that you can copy 2/2 vigilant tokens and 8/8 vigilant tokens and other stuff. much more exciting than stupid saprolings or whatever. angel and demon tokens from innistrad will like populate as well.

new jace is pretty meh, i'm not sure how i feel about him.

idk Terminate is pretty good, the only thing potentially holding that card back is being a Sorcery

Terminate literally warped both the Standard formats it was legal in. Dreadbore WILL see heavy play. It might not be an instant but damn is it good.

Jace is super underwhelming. In every way. I would say almost as bad as Memory Adept.

Azorius mechanic is sweet, if not kind of predictable. I like it a lot.

The Unleash Rare leaves a lot to be desired, but Rakdos' Return might see play somewhere.

Shock lands look nice.

Transguild Superland is basically Rupture Spire.

I am liking the look of it all so far.

Dreadbore is hardly the death of control, if anything it will see a lot of play in control decks... an aggro BR deck can't waste precious deck space and time durdling around with a 2 mana sorcery speed removal spell that has no potential of ever damaging an opponent. The only reason Jund was able to play Terminate was because 1. Terminate was better than Dreadbore would be in pre-WW formats (especially during Baneslayer's reign of terror) and 2. Jund had actual forms of card advantage in Cascade, Thrinax, and Blightning, which standard BR decks do not have anything close to. Jund was closer to The Rock than an aggro deck anyway, considering it's curve started at 2 (and only 1 4-of at 2) and some players insisted that Putrid Leech wasn't even worth it.

IDK what control will look like post RTR, but their singleton win cons (Bolas, New Niv [if good] etc), can all be shot out by a two drop that snappy can bring back. The thing that bugs me with jace is that +1, it can work against tokens, but I'd put Jace on an empty board, or he's screwed. Mini FoF is nice. Shame him and Gideon Jura won't co-exist in standard...

I honestly think that with that mana cost and the low power of those abilities, new Jace is unplayable.

Also I agree with theamericandream in that things such as Grixis control are more likely to play Dreadbore than, say, RB Vampires, but I still think it will be a strong card to look out for.

However, seeing Judge's Familiar and Azorius charm make me think the original U/W Delver + Traft list will make a resurgence with a vengeance.

So, Shock Lands are coming back, right?

If so, I am so happy right now. Arbor Elf will finally have an advantage over Llanowar Elves again.

Yep.. shocks are back!

Also... ladies and gentlemen... Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius!

Looks awesome... I love frites, and that won't be stopping soon(: Card draw, flying, Niv-Mizzet... this card has almost everything going for it.

Check out the card image gallary for more cards... and tell what you think... RtR is going to be awesome.

Just so everyone knows who's being referenced. That being said, I feel he'll be pretty good... not JtMS by a long stride, but still good.

I think Jace is bad.

his +1 is completely irrelevant and only serves as a gateway to his -8, which is also kind of underwhelming. His -2 is his only redeeming point, as history has proved time and again, it is impossible for your opponent to win with Fact or Fiction.

I think Jace will be conditionall and situationally useful. Otherwise, bad.

Niv-Mizzet has lost an unbelievable amount of combo potential. I am sad. But he is bigger, and now allows for more, less unfair synergy, so I am happy.

Also have some shocklands:
Blood Crypt
Hallowed Fountain
Overgrown Tomb
STEAM VENTS
Temple Garden

also Rupture Spire.

niv-mizzet combos with himself which is pretty flavourful of an egotistical genius dragon, but i still think it's a disappointing design.

SO many cube cards in this set already oh my god.

So I was playing at my locals and almost got completely wrecked today by two cards that I never really looked at before.

Deadly Recluse (1G, Deathtouch + Reach) and Revenge of the Hunted (Miracle: G) used together. Guy nuked half of my field. I won next turn using Overrun and hitting with five mana chargers boosted by Gavony Township up to 3/3, but getting half of my field wrecked so quickly was surprising.

With Green Sun's Zenith, Thrun, Llanowar Elves (fuck this, Arbor Elf just got good with Shock Lands), and Birds of Paradise rotating out, I'm not sure I want to run my current deck anymore (G/W Aggro). I'm thinking about moving to Green/Red Aggro or completely revising my Green/White deck, depending on how good the new G/W cards are.

Any help on what I should do?

Edit: Still hoping for a BoP reprint in Return to Ravnica, even if it's an unlikely event.

Wait for rotation. As it stands now, because so many good cards in the format are from Scars block, nearly every deck that isn't Delver will lose many key components (and even Dever will lose many good cards ie mana leak and vapor snag).

Depending on what support mechanisms and removal tools we get, RB Vampire Aggro could take off in a fashion similar to mono black Vamps from Zen block. UWb Spirits control similar to what Finkel played at PT Honolulu could get some new control cards in the Azorius Package.

GW Aggro will still probably be good, but with RTR I think it's likely that it will take on a more token-based offensive rather than vaue cards with good effects.
