1v1 Manaphy

The Official Glyx

Banned deucer.
[OVERVIEW]
Manaphy's niche in 1v1 comes from its wide variety of utility options and EV spreads that make it a very flexible partner. As a Water-type Pokemon, Manaphy finds itself in an advantageous position against many of the common Fire-, Steel-, and Ground-types that occupy 1v1 such as Mega Charizard X, Heatran, Magearna, Zygarde-C, Landorus-T, and Donphan. Additionally, Manaphy's access to Grass-type coverage gives it good matchups against many of the top-tier Water-types in 1v1 between Mega Gyarados, Primarina, and Tapu Fini. Even with mimimal investment, Manaphy still has above average bulk, being capable of withstanding powerful attacks like Magearna's Twinkle Tackle, Garchomp's Tectonic Rage, and Choice Specs Naganadel's Draco Meteor. Unfortunately, Manaphy's strongest Water-type move is Surf, which means it often misses out on getting KOs, namely on non-Flame Charge Mega Charizard Y and Choice Scarf Genesect, that it would've gotten if it had a move with higher Base Power like Hydro Pump. Additionally, Manaphy's excessively balanced stats lead to it being required to sacrifice reliability against Pokemon it previously could knock out, withstand attacks from, or outspeed in the interest of gaining matchups against others. This is especially evident in the fringe scenarios of trying to make Manaphy reliably withstand attacks from Landorus-T and Naganadel while still maintaining the power and speed to deal with Mega Charizard X and Smeargle.

Moves
========

Tail Glow is Manaphy's setup move, increasing its Special Attack by three stages so that it can knock out foes like Mega Gyarados, Magearna, Tapu Fini, and Mega Altaria. Surf becomes a powerful STAB Hydro Vortex when used with Waterium Z, giving Manaphy the potential to clear out the common Fire- and Ground-types that occupy the 1v1 metagame such as Heatran, Donphan, and common variants of Landorus-T and Victini. Icy Wind deals important chip damage while also lowering the foe's Speed by one stage, which is essential for taking on Mega Gyarados, Garchomp, Naganadel, and stall Deoxys-S. Energy Ball is a coverage move for dealing with the Water-types that resist Surf and Icy Wind such as Mega Gyarados, Primarina, and Tapu Fini.

Set Details
========

244 Special Attack EVs with a Modest nature ensure that Manaphy knocks out offensive Mega Charizard X in one hit with Hydro Vortex, as well as +1 Magearna after using Tail Glow. 152 Speed EVs guarantee that Manaphy outspeeds Smeargle, Adamant Mega Gyarados, and specially defensive Mega Charizard X. 84 HP EVs and 28 Defense EVs allow Manaphy to withstand a Solar Beam from Mega Charizard Y, as well as giving it the best odds of surviving a Tectonic Rage from Jolly Landorus-T and a Choice Specs-boosted Draco Meteor from Timid Naganadel.

Usage Tips
========

Manaphy is ideally used against a somewhat selective group of Pokemon, specifically those that don't have sufficient special bulk to withstand its Hydro Vortex, fail to knock it out quickly, or both such as Heatran, Celesteela, Mega Altaria, Zygarde-C, and Magearna. When against Pokemon with competent special bulk or a typing neutral to or resisting Water such as Mega Sableye, Stored Power Necrozma, Porygon2, and Primarina, it is ideal to use Tail Glow right away so that Manaphy can go for the KO on the following turns. There are a handful of matchups where it's ideal for Manaphy to go for the attack right away instead of setting up, namely using Hydro Vortex versus offensive Mega Charizard X, Greninja, Landorus-T, and Victini or a combination of Icy Wind followed by another attack for Garchomp and Naganadel. Against Mega Charizard X, it is ideal for Manaphy to use Hydro Vortex right away, as it will immediately KO offensive sets. If Mega Charizard X is slower than Manaphy and survives Hydro Vortex, it means they are running a specially defensive set and will lack the ability to reliably KO Manaphy, even after a Dragon Dance, while Manaphy picks up the 2HKO with Surf. The matchup versus Mega Gyarados is won by using Tail Glow immediately and then following up with Icy Wind to make sure that Mega Gyarados doesn't 2HKO Manaphy after a Dragon Dance as well as deal crucial chip damage. On the third turn, Manaphy picks up the 2HKO with either Hydro Vortex if Gyarados didn't Mega Evolve or Energy Ball if it did. Mega Slowbro is a questionable matchup for Manaphy, as it is very reliant on rolls and careful plays due to Mega Slowbro's ability to boost its Special Defense considerably with Amnesia. The ideal play is to use Energy Ball after the first Tail Glow so that Mega Slowbro gets a possible Special Defense drop and some chip damage, then follow up with another Tail Glow, and repeatedly use Energy Ball, hoping for sufficient rolls to drop Special Defense and KO it.

Team Options
========

Manaphy can find a place in the common Fire / Water / Grass core with Fire-types like Mega Charizard, Heatran, and Victini covering its weakness to Grass-types like Serperior, Mega Venusaur, Ferrothorn, and Kartana, while Manaphy returns the favor by handling the Rock-, Ground-, and Water-types like Mega Tyranitar, Landorus-T, Mega Gyarados, and Mega Swampert that threaten them. Meanwhile, the aforementioned Grass-types cover Manaphy's weakness to Electric-type attacks from Pokemon like Zeraora, Magnezone, and Thunder Punch Mega Metagross, while Manaphy covers their weakness to the aforementioned Fire-types as well as Steel-types like Magearna, Celesteela, and Mega Scizor, which resist their attacks. Bulky Steel-types like Mega Metagross, Celesteela, Heatran, specially defensive Mega Mawile, and Ferrothorn serve as good partners for Manaphy, as they can deal with the powerful special attackers that threaten it between Porygon-Z, Tapu Lele, Mega Gardevoir, Meloetta, and Magnezone, while Manaphy covers Pokemon like Mega Charizard X, Zygarde-C, Mega Sableye, and Victini that would otherwise beat them. It also appreciates assistance from Fairy-types like Magearna, Tapu Lele, Mega Gardevoir, Tapu Fini, and Mega Altaria, as they deal with the Dragon- and Fighting-types like Dragonite, Kommo-o, Haxorus, Pheromosa, and Sawk that either overpower Manaphy or withstand its attacks. Manaphy, in turn, handles the opposing Steel- and Fire-types like Magearna, Celesteela, Heatran, and Victini that the Fairy-types struggle with. Sturdy Pokemon like Magnezone, Donphan, Crustle, and Sawk excel at handling some of the more offensive threats that often KO Manaphy between Mega Charizard Y, Porygon-Z, Meloetta, Genesect, and Kartana, while Manaphy handles Pokemon like Zygarde-C, Landorus-T, Mega Altaria, Mega Sableye, and Mega Swampert that can all withstand attacks from the Sturdy Pokemon and knock them out over a long, drawn-out battle.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Acid Armor and Charm help with Manaphy's physical bulk, boosting its Defense by two stages and lowering the foe's Attack by two stages. These moves help Manaphy buy time to set up against Pokemon like Dragonite and Mega Mawile while also enabling it to stall when used with more defensively oriented sets. Calm Mind is an option that is ideally used on faster builds in order to withstand attacks from the likes of Tapu Lele and Genesect, but this leaves Manaphy missing one of its core moves. Rest can be used in conjunction with the prior defensive setup moves in the interest of stalling foes like Mega Slowbro, Clefable, Jumpluff, and Mega Venusaur rather than going for a quick knockout. Rain Dance can be used alongside Rest and Hydration on more stall-oriented sets in order to get free heals in the duration of the weather. It is mainly useful for canceling out Mega Charizard Y's Drought. Scald can be used in place of Surf on more stall-oriented sets in the interest of fishing for a burn in order to further aid against physical threats like Dragonite and Mega Mawile while also getting continual chip damage against the likes of Mega Scizor, Kyurem, Chansey, and Umbreon; moreover, Chesto Berry and Iapapa Berry can be used in place of Waterium Z so that Manaphy can get immediate recovery that doesn't disrupt its defensive setup. Icium Z can be used over Waterium Z with the base move Blizzard in place of Surf in order for Manaphy to get KOs versus Dragonite, Serperior, and Garchomp, as well as Kommo-o, when used in conjunction with Calm Mind and Icy Wind.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Super Effective Attacks**: As a Water-type, Manaphy suffers from a severe weakness to the Electric- and Grass-types in 1v1 that threaten to KO it before it gets a chance to KO them, namely Zeraora, Magnezone, Serperior, Mega Venusaur, Ferrothorn, and Kartana.

**Wallbreakers**: Though Manaphy is respectably bulky, there are still many Pokemon that simply have the raw power or setup to dispose of Manaphy without needing to hit super effectively, such as Dragonite, Porygon-Z, Tapu Lele, Mega Gardevoir, Pheromosa, and Substitute Volcarona.

**Bulky Pokemon**: There are multiple Pokemon that have the raw bulk, type resistance, and setup to withstand attacks, fire back with their own powerful attacks, and exhaust Manaphy, such as Meloetta, Mega Slowbro, Aegislash, Kommo-o, Clefable, Mega Venusaur, Choice Specs Necrozma, and Whimsicott.

ok, to your credit, just hitting reply and editing the thing like this is much easier-
implemented everything except for a couple rebuttals below
i would mention the pretty good 100/100/100 bulk which pairs nicely with tail glow and lets you set up easily against many hard hitters like char x
1572846608983.png

hard agree here, anything involving stats is best left in set details.
if this is the case, wouldn't we have additionally recommended ev spreads? there are none in OO or set details. Feel free to add any ev spread you think could serve a purpose with these moves and item
the point isn't necessarily about wildly alternative spreads, but rather how it struggles to maintain everything into one optimal setup. namely, how the main set struggles to balance out rolls against naganadel AND lando-t while still outspeeding smeargle and koing magearna/zardx, rather than leaning all in one way or the other.
phero doesnt rlly threaten manaphy, its rolls are 70/30 in manaphy's favor
252+ Atk Choice Band Pheromosa High Jump Kick vs. 84 HP / 28 Def Manaphy: 354-417 (97.7 - 115.1%) -- 81.3% chance to OHKO
188+ SpA Pheromosa All-Out Pummeling (190 BP) vs. 84 HP / 4 SpD Manaphy: 337-397 (93 - 109.6%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO
definitely a check, minimum.

hard agree here, anything involving stats is best left in set details.
yeah I shouldn't have included the base stats, but mentioning the fact that manaphy is bulky should still be included in overview. It's bulk is somewhat unique in the 1v1 meta and allows it to set up tail glow effectively. The point you brought up is so authors don't spout on about each individual stat, even if they are relevant, going like, "The base 56 HP stat is poor, but the base 187 Attack stat is super impressive. However, its coupled with the again mediocre base 69 Def stat" and so on. This is because a casual reader most likely will have no context as to whether or a not a 'base 50' stat Pokemon is amazing or not, so saying the stat alone gives an uninformed reader no information. However, just stating 'Manaphy is exceptionally bulky' or something to that effect is perfectly fine. You can change the wording to "Manaphy's above average bulk lets it tank plenty of significantly powerful hits from x, y, and z, and allow you to set up in their face" or something to that effect

the point isn't necessarily about wildly alternative spreads, but rather how it struggles to maintain everything into one optimal setup. namely, how the main set struggles to balance out rolls against naganadel AND lando-t while still outspeeding smeargle and koing magearna/zardx, rather than leaning all in one way or the other.
Then perhaps change the wording to something like "Manaphy struggles to be able to EV to consistently beat all threats that they want to beat, usually being forced to accept a low risk of failure against Pokemon they either want to bulk an attack from or OHKO, like x, y, and z"

Cause rn the usage of 'a single spread' implies that it needs to use multiple spreads to achieve everything it wants, which would imply it can be forged to do several different things consistently but not all at once, which doesn't seem to be what you're implying.

252+ Atk Choice Band Pheromosa High Jump Kick vs. 84 HP / 28 Def Manaphy: 354-417 (97.7 - 115.1%) -- 81.3% chance to OHKO
188+ SpA Pheromosa All-Out Pummeling (190 BP) vs. 84 HP / 4 SpD Manaphy: 337-397 (93 - 109.6%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO
definitely a check, minimum.
I was going to bring up the fact that only dumb ppl would run a neutral speed nature on pheromosa in a metagame rife with zeraora and scarf pz, but after looking at usage stats, I am incredibly disappointed in the ladder. At least specify Adamant/Modest.

1/3 after this.

[OVERVIEW]
  • Manaphy's niche in 1v1 comes from its wide variety of move options and spreads that make it a very flexible partner that is capable of finding a place on most teams.
  • As a Water type Pokemon, Manaphy finds itself in an advantageous position against many of the common Fire, Steel, and Ground types that occupy 1v1 such as Magearna, Zygarde-C, Landorus-T, Donphan, Heatran, and most Mega Charizard-X.
  • Additionally, Manaphy's access to Grass type coverage gives it good matchups against many of the top tier Water types in 1v1 between Mega Gyarados, Primarina, and Tapu Fini.
  • Manaphy also has above average bulk, being capable of withstanding powerful attacks like Magearna's Z-Fleur Cannon, Garchomp's Z-Earthquake, and Naganadel's Choice Specs Draco Meteor with minimal investment.
  • Unfortunately, Manaphy's strongest Water type move is Surf, which means it often misses out on getting KOs it would've gotten if it had a move like Hydro Pump, namely Mega Charizard-Y and Genesect.
  • Additionally, Manaphy's excessively balanced stats lead to it struggling to cover everything it needs to with a single spread, often being required to sacrifice reliability against Pokemon it previously could just barely knock out, withstand attacks from, or outspeed in the interest of gaining matchups against one of the others. This is especially evident in the fringe scenarios of trying to make Manaphy reliably withstand attacks from Landorus-Therian and Naganadel while still maintaining the power and speed to deal with Smeargle and Mega Charizard-X.

Moves
========
  • Tail Glow is Manaphy's setup move, increasing its Special Attack by three stages so that it can knock out foes like Mega Gyarados, Magearna, Tapu Fini, and Mega Altaria.
  • Surf is Manaphy's STAB move which becomes a powerful Hydro Vortex when used with Waterium Z which gives Manaphy the potential to clear out the common Fire and Ground types that occupy the 1v1 metagame such as Heatran, Donphan, and common variants of Landorus-T and Victini.
  • Icy Wind is a move that deals important chip damage while also lowering the opponent's Speed by one stage, which is essential for Mega Gyarados, Garchomp, Naganadel, and stall Deoxys-S.
  • Energy Ball is a coverage move for dealing with the Water types that would otherwise resist Surf and Icy Wind such as Mega Gyarados, Primarina, and Tapu Fini.

Set Details
========
  • 244 SpA EVs with a Modest nature ensures that Manaphy knocks out offensive Mega Charizard-X in one hit with Z-Surf as well as +1 Magearna after using Tail Glow.
  • 152 Spe EVs ensures that Manaphy outspeeds Smeargle, Adamant Mega Gyarados, and specially defensive Mega Charizard-X.
  • 84 HP EVs and 28 Def Evs balance out to allow Manaphy to withstand a Solar Beam from Mega Charizard-Y, as well as giving it the best odds of surviving a Z-Earthquake from Jolly Landorus-T and a Choice Specs Draco Meteor from Timid Naganadel.

Usage Tips
========
  • Manaphy is ideally used against a somewhat selective group of Pokemon, namely those who either don't have sufficient special bulk to withstand its Hydro Vortex, fail to knock it out quickly, or any combination of the two such as Magearna, Zygarde-C, Mega Altaria, and Celesteela.
  • When against Pokemon with competent special bulk or a typing neutral to or resisting Water such as Primarina, Mega Sableye, Stored Power Necrozma, and Porygon2, it is ideal to use Tail Glow right away so that Manaphy can go for the KO on the following turns.
  • There are a handful of matchups where it's ideal for Manaphy to go for the attack right away instead of setting up, namely using Z-Surf versus offensive Mega Charizard-X, Greninja, Landorus-T, and Victini or a combination of Icy Wind followed by another attack for Garchomp and Naganadel.
  • The matchup versus Mega Gyarados is won by using Tail Glow immediately and then following up with Icy Wind to make sure that Mega Gyarados doesn't 2HKO you after a Dragon Dance as well as deal crucial chip damage. On the third turn, you pick up the 2HKO with either Z-Surf if they didn't Mega evolve or Energy Ball if they did.
  • Mega Charizard-X is a bit of a selective matchup for Manaphy, as you have to predict which set it is between either offensive or specially defense. Using Z-Surf immediately will OHKO offensive, while specially defensive will be slower and lose to Tail Glow followed by Z-Surf.
  • Mega Slowbro is an iffy matchup for Manaphy, as it is very reliant on rolls and careful plays, due to them being able to boost up their Special Defense considerably with Amnesia. The ideal play is to use Energy Ball after the first Tail Glow so that you possibly get a Special Defense drop and some chip damage, then following up with another Tail Glow and repeatedly using Energy Ball, hoping that you get sufficient rolls to KO or Special Defense drops.

Team Options
========
  • Manaphy can find a place in the common Fire, Water, and Grass core with Fire types like Mega Charizard, Heatran, and Victini covering Manaphy's weakness to Grass types like Serperior, Mega Venusaur, Ferrothorn, and Kartana while Manaphy returns the favor by handling the Rock, Ground, and Water types like Mega Tyranitar, Landorus-T, Mega Gyarados, and Mega Swampert that threaten the Fire types. Meanwhile, the aforementioned Grass types cover Manaphy's weakness to Electric type attacks from Pokemon like Zeraora, Magnezone, and Thunder Punch Mega Metagross while Manaphy covers their weakness to the aforementioned Fire types as well as the Steel types like Magearna, Celesteela, and Mega Scizor that would otherwise resist their attacks.
  • Bulky Steel types like Mega Metagross, Celesteela, Heatran, specially defensive Mega Mawile, and Ferrothorn serve as good partners for Manaphy, as they can deal with the powerful special attackers that threaten Manaphy between Porygon-Z, Tapu Lele, Mega Gardevoir, Meloetta, and Magnezone, while Manaphy covers Pokemon like Mega Charizard-X, Zygarde-C, Mega Sableye, and Victini that would otherwise beat the Steel types.
  • Manaphy appreciates assistance from Fairy types like Magearna, Tapu Lele, Mega Gardevoir, Tapu Fini, and Mega Altaria as they deal with the Fighting and Dragon types like Dragonite, Kommo-o, Haxorus, Pheromosa, and Sawk that either overpower Manaphy or withstand its attacks. Manaphy, in turn, handles the Steel and Fire types like opposing Magearna, Celesteela, Heatran, and Victini that the Fairy types struggle with.
  • Sturdy Pokemon like Magnezone, Donphan, Crustle, and Sawk excel at handling some of the more offensive threats that often KO Manaphy between Mega Charizard-Y, Porygon-Z, Meloetta, Genesect, and Kartana, while Manapy handles Pokemon like Zygarde-C, Landorus-T, Mega Altaria, Mega Sableye, and Mega Swampert that can all withstand attacks from the Sturdy Pokemon and knock them out over a long, drawn-out battle.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
  • Acid Armor and Charm are moves that help with Manaphy's physical bulk, either boosting its Defense by two stages or lowering the opponent's Atk by two stages. These moves help to buy Manaphy time to set up against Pokemon like Dragonite and Mega Mawile, but also have use on stall-oriented sets.
  • Calm Mind is an option that boosts both of Manaphy's special stats by one stage upon use. It's ideally used on faster builds in order to withstand attacks from the likes of Tapu Lele and Genesect, but leaves Manaphy missing one of its core moves.
  • Rest can be used in conjunction with the prior defensive setup moves in the interest of stalling down opponents, rather than going for a quick knockout.
  • Rain Dance is an option that can be used alongside Rest and Hydration on more stall-oriented sets in order to get free heals during the duration of the weather. It is mainly useful for canceling out Mega Charizard-Y's Drought.
  • Scald is a move that can be used in place of Surf on more stall-oriented sets in the interest of fishing for a burn.
  • Chesto Berry and Iapapa Berry can be used in place of Waterium Z on the stall-oriented sets so that Manaphy can get some immediate heals that don't disrupt Manaphy's defensive setup.
  • Icium Z can be used over Waterium Z with the base move Blizzard in order for Manaphy to get KOs versus Dragonite, Serperior, and Garchomp, as well as Kommo-o when used in conjunction with Calm Mind and Icy Wind.
  • Custap Berry is an item used on sets with Endure, Tail Glow, and two attacking moves of your choice in order to surprise opponents and snag a KO.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Super effective attacks**: As a Water type, Manaphy suffers from a severe weakness to the Electric and Grass types that occupy 1v1 and threaten to KO Manaphy before it gets a chance to KO them, namely Zeraora, Magnezone, Thunder Punch Mega Metagross, Serperior, Mega Venusaur, Ferrothorn, and Kartana.

**Hyper offense**: Though Manaphy is respectably bulky, there are still many Pokemon that simply have the raw power or set up to dispose of Manaphy without needing to hit super effectively such as Dragonite, Porygon-Z, Tapu Lele, Mega Gardevoir, Pheromosa, and Substitute Volcarona.

**Bulky Pokemon**: There are multiple Pokemon that either have the raw bulk, type resistance, or set up to withstand attacks and either fire back with their own powerful attacks or stall Manaphy down such as Meloetta, Mega Slowbro, Aegislash, Kommo-o, Clefable, Mega Venusaur, Choice Specs Necrozma, and Whimsicott.

AMQC
[Overview]

I think you should talk about its access to setup moves in Tail Glow, Acid Armor, and Calm Mind, which really differentiates Manaphy from other Water-types as being functionally capable of performing two different roles - that of a powerful attacker(TG) or that of a bulky slow setup attacker (AA CM).

[Set]

nature : Modest
evs: 92 HP / 28 Def / 236 SpA / 152 Spe

Same offensive power, marginally more bulk.
(236+ SpA Manaphy Hydro Vortex (175 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Charizard-Mega-X: 297-349 (100 - 117.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO)

[Set Deets]

Changes here, as well...

[Team Options]
I think you should not develop a team in TO. I feel like how you've phrased the first point makes it sound like a team is being built. You could remove the "FWG" mentions, which would solve the problem.

[Usage Tips]
You've mentioned Mega Slowbro as a "bulky Pokemon" Counter, so I feel like you should remove it from there or from here.

As someone who has used bulky Choice Specs Naganadel, I'm pretty sure that the same amount of EVs used to tank a Blast Burn from MZardY in Sun(200 SpD) can tank 2 Icy Wind from Manaphy and 2HKO with its moves, so I think Naganadel should be mentioned to be "non-bulky Choice Specs"...

[Other Options]

I feel like the first 4 options should be combined into one pointl, because bulky setup sets run CM-Rest-Scald-AcidArmor/Charm , all in one set.

(I actually feel like it should get a whole new set of its own, due to how it's both viable, while also being functionally a set corresponding to a different type of playstyle, but w/e...)

Checks and Counters

I think Sleep Pokemon should get a point here, since Mega Pert can 2HKO you withyEQ while tanking an Energy Ball, Jumpluff can whittle away your health with LeechFestation, blah blah....
Also "X types" should become "X-types" and some other Pokemon-related errors I saw along the course of the analysis, but this is at QC 1/3, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ......

I like where you're going with Manaphy having a low-BP STAB Water-move, but CMY and Choice Specs Genesect both win against Manaphy anyhow, no matter if it has Hydro Pump or not. You could change this to just Choice Scarf Genesect theoretically but I think that wouldn't be persuasive enough. I'd either give new examples or just end it at Surf being a low-BP move.
[OVERVIEW]
  • Manaphy's niche in 1v1 comes from its wide variety of move utility options and spreads that make it a very flexible partner that is capable of finding a place on most teams. [Most of the variance in Manaphy comes from changing out Tail Glow, Acid Armor, CM, Rain Dance + Rest.]
  • Unfortunately, Manaphy's strongest Water type move is Surf, which means it often misses out on getting KOs it would've gotten if it had a move like Hydro Pump, namely non-Flame Charge Mega Charizard-Y and Choice Scarf Genesect.
This is especially evident in the fringe scenarios of trying to make Manaphy reliably withstand attacks from Landorus-Therian and Naganadel while still maintaining the power and speed to deal with Mega Charizard-X and Smeargle.

Moves
========

Set Details
========

Usage Tips
========
[Reorder this to be in parallel structure. It implies that Magearna doesn't have the sufficient special bulk to survive Hydro Vortex]

Manaphy's niche in 1v1 comes from its wide variety of utility options and spreads that make it a very flexible partner that is capable of finding a place on most teams (this is already implied in "flexible"). Additionally, Manaphy's access to Grass-type (AH) coverage gives it good matchups against many of the top-tier (AH) Water-types (AH) in 1v1 between Mega Gyarados, Primarina, and Tapu Fini. Even with mimimal investment, (moved this up here to remove confusion/wrong attribution) Manaphy also still has above average bulk, being capable of withstanding powerful attacks like Magearna's Z-Fleur Cannon Twinkle Tackle, Garchomp's Z-Earthquake Continental Crush, and Choice Specs Naganadel's Choice Specs Draco Meteor with minimal investment. Unfortunately, Manaphy's strongest Water-type (AH) move is Surf, which means it often misses out on getting KOs, namely non-Flame Charge Mega Charizard-Y (RH) and Choice Scarf Genesect, that it would've gotten if it had a move with higher BP like Hydro Pump. (period), namely non-Flame Charge Mega Charizard-Y and Choice Scarf Genesect. Additionally, Manaphy's excessively balanced stats lead to it struggling to cover everything it needs to with a single spread, often being required to sacrifice choose between reliability against Pokemon it previously could just barely knock out, withstand attacks from, or and outspeed (clearer, more concise, tho highly subjective) in the interest of gaining matchups against one of the others. This is especially evident in the fringe scenarios of trying to make Manaphy reliably withstand attacks from Landorus-Therian and Naganadel while still maintaining the power and speed to deal with Mega Charizard-X (RH) and Smeargle.

When against Pokemon with competent special bulk or a typing neutral to or resisting Water such as Mega Sableye, Stored Power Necrozma, Porygon2 and Primarina, it is ideal to use Tail Glow right away so that Manaphy can go for the KO on the following turns. There are a handful of matchups where it's ideal for Manaphy to go for the attack right away instead of setting up, namely using Hydro Vortex versus offensive Mega Charizard X, Greninja, Landorus-Therian, and Victini or a combination of Icy Wind followed by another attack for Garchomp and Naganadel. The matchup versus Mega Gyarados is won by using Tail Glow immediately and then following up with Icy Wind to make sure that Mega Gyarados doesn't 2HKO you after a Dragon Dance as well as deal crucial chip damage. On the third turn, Manaphy picks up the 2HKO with either Hydro Vortex if Gyarados didn't Mega Evolve or Energy Ball if it did. Mega Charizard X is a bit of a selective matchup for Manaphy, as you have to predict which set it is running between offensive and specially defensive. Using Hydro Vortex immediately will OHKO the offensive set, while the specially defensive one will be slower and lose to Tail Glow followed by Manaphy's Hydro Vortex. Mega Slowbro is an iffy matchup for Manaphy, as it is very reliant on rolls and careful plays due to its ability to boost its Special Defense considerably with Amnesia. The ideal play is to use Energy Ball after the first Tail Glow so that Mega Slowbro gets a possible Special Defense drop and some chip damage, then follow up with another Tail Glow, and repeatedly use Energy Ball, hoping for sufficient rolls to drop Special Defense and KO.

Manaphy can find a place in the common Fire, Water, and Grass core with Fire-types like Mega Charizard, Heatran, and Victini covering Manaphy's weakness to Grass-types like Serperior, Mega Venusaur, Ferrothorn, and Kartana, while Manaphy returns the favor by handling the Rock-, Ground-, and Water-types like Mega Tyranitar, Landorus-Therian, Mega Gyarados, and Mega Swampert that threaten them. Meanwhile, the aforementioned Grass-types cover Manaphy's weakness to Electric-type attacks from Pokemon like Zeraora, Magnezone, and Thunder Punch Mega Metagross, while Manaphy covers their weakness to the aforementioned Fire-types as well as Steel-types like Magearna, Celesteela, and Mega Scizor, which would otherwise resist their attacks. It, in turn, handles the opposing Steel- and Fire-types like Magearna, Celesteela, Heatran, and Victini that the Fairy-types struggle with. Sturdy Pokemon like Magnezone, Donphan, Crustle, and Sawk excel at handling some of the more offensive threats that often KO Manaphy between Mega Charizard Y, Porygon-Z, Meloetta, Genesect, and Kartana, while Manapy handles Pokemon like Zygarde-C, Landorus-T, Mega Altaria, Mega Sableye, and Mega Swampert that can all withstand attacks from the Sturdy Pokemon and knock them out over a long, drawn-out battle.

Acid Armor and Charm are moves that help with Manaphy's physical bulk, boosting its Defense by two stages and lowering the foe's Attack by two stages. These moves help Manaphy buy time to set up against Pokemon like Dragonite and Mega Mawile while also enabling it to stall when used with more defensive-oriented sets. Calm Mind is an option that boosts both of Manaphy's special stats by one stage upon use. It's ideally used on faster builds in order to withstand attacks from the likes of Tapu Lele and Genesect, but this leaves Manaphy missing one of its core moves. Rest can be used in conjunction with the prior defensive setup moves in the interest of stalling foes like Mega Slowbro, Clefable, Jumpluff, and Mega Venusaur rather than going for a quick knockout. Rain Dance is an option that can be used alongside Rest and Hydration on more stall-oriented sets in order to get free heals in the duration of the weather. It is mainly useful for canceling out Mega Charizard Y's Drought. Scald is a move that can be used in place of Surf on more stall-oriented sets in the interest of fishing for a burn in order to further aid against physical threats like Dragonite and Mega Mawile while also getting continual chip damage against the likes of Mega Scizor, Kyurem, Chansey, and Umbreon; moreover, Chesto Berry and Iapapa Berry can be used in place of Waterium Z so that Manaphy can get some immediate heals that don't disrupt Manaphy's defensive setup. Icium Z can be used over Waterium Z with the base move Blizzard in order for Manaphy to get KOs versus Dragonite, Serperior, and Garchomp, as well as Kommo-o, when used in conjunction with Calm Mind and Icy Wind.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Bulky Pokemon**: There are multiple Pokemon that have the raw bulk, type resistance, and setup to withstand attacks, fire back with their own powerful attacks, and exhaust Manaphy, such as Meloetta, Mega Slowbro, Aegislash, Kommo-o, Clefable, Mega Venusaur, Choice Specs Necrozma, and Whimsicott.

implemented, though I have a note about the offensive/specially defensive zardx usage tip:

after double checking things, I found that Z-Surf followed by Surf 2HKOs specially defensive zardx almost 100% of the time, so the tip will be changed to reflect that.

Against Mega Charizard X, it is ideal for Manaphy to use Hydro Vortex right away, as it will immediately KO offensive sets. If the foe is slower than Manaphy and survives Hydro Vortex it means they are running a specially defensive set and will lack the ability to reliably KO Manaphy, even after a Dragon Dance, while Manaphy picks up the 2HKO with Surf.

it would look something like this. I also highlighted the tip it would be replacing in the hide tag above. I would probably move this before the Gyarados tip, as the tips surrounding it are both more convoluted than what the edited tip would entail.

Thanks for considering my amcheck :).

With that edit tho, I'll just follow up with a few things :).

Against Mega Charizard X, it is ideal for Manaphy to use Hydro Vortex right away, as it will to immediately KO it if it runs an offensive sets. If the foe is slower than Manaphy and survives Hydro Vortex, (AC) it means they are it is running a specially defensive set and will lack the ability to reliably KO Manaphy , (RC) even after a Dragon Dance, while Manaphy it picks up the 2HKO with Surf.
The edits on the first sentence clarifies that Manaphy is KOing the Pokemon and not its set (also makes "it" more consistent). The edits on the second one are just punctuation fixes.

I also missed something on my first run-through. This sentence could still use some editing.

Acid Armor and Charm are moves that help with Manaphy's physical bulk, boosting its Defense by two stages and lowering the foe's Attack by two stages, respectively.
Thanks, dood :).

Additionally, Manaphy's excessively balanced stats lead to it struggling to cover everything it needs to with a single spread, often being required to choose between reliability against Pokemon it could knock out, withstand attacks from, and outspeed. (choose between this and what?) This is especially evident in the fringe scenarios of trying to make Manaphy reliably withstand attacks from Landorus-Therian and Naganadel while still maintaining the power and speed to deal with Mega Charizard X and Smeargle.

Tail Glow is Manaphy's setup move, increasing its Special Attack by three stages so that it can knock out foes like Mega Gyarados, Magearna, Tapu Fini, and Mega Altaria. Surf is Manaphy's STAB move, which becomes a powerful STAB Hydro Vortex when used with Waterium Z, giving Manaphy the potential to clear out the common Fire- and Ground-types that occupy the 1v1 metagame such as Heatran, Donphan, and common variants of Landorus-Therian and Victini. Icy Wind is a move that deals important chip damage while also lowering the opponent's foe's Speed by one stage, which is essential for taking on Mega Gyarados, Garchomp, Naganadel, and stall Deoxys-S. Energy Ball is a coverage move for dealing with the Water-types that would otherwise resist Surf and Icy Wind such as Mega Gyarados, Primarina, and Tapu Fini.

84 HP EVs and 28 Defense EVs allow Manaphy to withstand a Solar Beam from Mega Charizard Y, as well as give giving it the best odds of surviving a Tectonic Rage from Jolly Landorus-T and a Choice Specs-boosted Draco Meteor from Timid Naganadel.

as far as the "choosing between reliability" bit in the overview goes, the point is meant to convey that Manaphy can't EV for guaranteed matchups against everything at once, and as such, has to rely on this mostly reliable spread against everything, resulting in lando-t and naga both having nonzero chances to KO with zquake and draco (a 6.3 and a 12.5 is better than a 0 and a 25, imo) . If there's a way this can be worded better, I'm all for it, since I know it made tda confused when he first read it as well-
