[Overview]
- Decent 100 base Special Attack and Speed
- 100/100/100 Defenses
- Rain boosting STAB and activating Hydration
- Immune to all status in Rain
- Hydration + Rest gives instant full recovery
- Great boosting moves; Tail Glow (+3 SpA) and Calm Mind (+1 SpA, +1 SpD)
- Good STAB moves with Surf or Boiling Water
- Decent type coverage with Ice Beam or Energy Ball
[SET]
name: Tail Glow
move 1: Surf
move 2: Tail Glow
move 3: Ice Beam / Energy Ball
move 4: Rest / Energy Ball / Hidden Power Fire
nature: Timid
item: Rindo Berry / Wacan Berry / Life Orb
evs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
[Set Comments]
- Able to boost SpA to 820 after one Tail Glow
- 213 BP Surf after STAB and Rain boost
- Able to outspeed a fair amount of the metagame with 328 Spe
- Instant Recovery with Hydration (in Rain) and Rest
- Ice Beam allows Manaphy to hit Dragon- or Grass-types better, while Energy Ball helps with opposing Water-types. HP Fire main use is for Nattorei, who will still take heavy damage despite Rain.
- Rindo Berry's main use if to help Manaphy deal with Shaymin-S and Nattorei, while Wacan Berry helps with the ever common Electric-type attacks in OU.
- Life Orb will increase damage and is not as much of a risk with Hydration+Rest.
- Energy Ball or Hidden Power Fire can be used over Rest should you want to use Manaphy outside of rain.
[SET]
name: Bulky Booster
move 1: Surf
move 2: Calm Mind / Tail Glow
move 3: Ice Beam / Energy Ball
move 4: Rest / Energy Ball / Hidden Power Fire
nature: Bold
item: Leftovers / Rindo Berry
evs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
[Set Comments]
- 213 BP Surf after STAB and Rain boost
- Instant Recovery with Hydration (in Rain) and Rest
- Relatively Bulky 100/100/100 Defenses as well as a great bulky Water typing.
- Able to take a +2 Earthquake from Doryuuzu
- Calm Mind will make Manaphy bulky all around, while solely investing in Defense and using Tail Glow will allow you to better deal with pokemon like Doryuuzu and Tyranitar.
- Ice Beam allows Manaphy to hit Dragon- or Grass-types better, while Energy Ball helps with opposing Water-types. HP Fire main use is for Nattorei, who will still take heavy damage despite Rain.
- While leftovers will provide recovery, Rindo Berry will help Manaphy deal with Shaymin-S, who can damage Manaphy as well as remove Manaphy's accumulated SpD boosts from Calm Mind.
- Energy Ball or Hidden Power Fire can be used over Rest should you want to use Manaphy outside of rain.
[Team Options]
- Politoed is able to summon permanent rain to boost Manaphy's STAB as well as activate Hydration
- Nattorei resists both of Manaphy's weaknesses, walls opposing Rain sweepers. It also can provide entry hazards to make Manaphy's sweeping easier
- Ground-types or Pokemon with the abilities Lightningrod, Volt Absorb, Motor Drive, or Herbivore make good teammates as they are immune to Manaphy's weaknesses. A good example of this is Jolteon, who will also be able to help against opposing Rain teams.
- Boiling Water can be used over Surf on either set if you wish to have the 30% chance of burning an opposing Pokemon. While this works better on the Calm Mind variant, the switch is not recommended for either. While the ability to burn will often seem tempting and hard to pass up, the 33 BP decrease (factoring in Rain and STAB) is often harder to pass up.
- Should you choose to use Manaphy outside of Rain, you can easily run Substitute over Rest in order to help you set up. When doing this, it is recommended that you use Leftovers in order to increase survivability.
- Without Rindo Berry, Shaymin-S and Ludicolo can all deal with Manaphy easily. Nattorei can also take on Manaphy should it not have HP Fire.
- Without Wacan Berry, most faster Thunderbolt users will be able to deal some serious damage and KO or bring Mananphy into KO Range
- Well timed switches to non-Drizzle weather inducers can immobilize Manaphy and make it extremely vunerable. Tyranitar will also be able to Pursuit should Manaphy attempt to switch
- Manaphy does not have a Dream World ability.
- Manaphy will have to beware of Scarf Shandera, who can trap Manaphy and hit it hard with a super effective Energy Ball before Manaphy can fire back a Surf. Shandera will have more trouble dealing with Calm Mind variants of Manaphy. Shandera will not be able to deal too much damage after a Calm Mind or two and then Manaphy can continue to set up on it.
- Like all other boosting sweepers, Manaphy must be weary of Scarf Ditto. While Manaphy will often not carry anything to deal with opposing Manaphy, a resisted Surf after a Tail Glow or two will still do a grave amount of damage. Ditto will copy Manaphy's boosts, but Choice Scarf Ditto will not be able to attack and heal. Ditto also will have 104 HP less than Manaphy as Ditto does not copy a Pokemon's HP stat.
