the speed difference is really enough to make a difference in time trials. play a ghost using the Torpedo in LC while you use the bowser bike and you'll see what i mean.
 
Well I generally do use the torpedo when I can, and I haven't noticed much difference, but I only started time trialing properly quite recently
 
CTrainier is right. Wheelie length is no issue at all.

I played on wifi for the first time since I got the game 2 weeks ago today. I won all but 2 races, in which I came second and third. Blue Shells were responsible for both. I was expecting my opponants to be a little tougher and I hadn't expected those who go thier own way ignoring the Latikus. I hope I never encounter 2 of them at once.
 
Haha, yeah but after 30 seconds at most the race is determined anyway
edit: well it does yeah but it also does it after 30 seconds of the last person to finish or something Im guessing because I've had races where people where messing around and it just ended abruptly VV
And also Ctrainer SCs point does make sense but Im not sure how true it is, he means that because of its drift, the bowser bike and get around the corner and start wheelying faster, so it is wheelying for longer, making it faster
 
Really? I haven't had a race where more than 2 failed to cross the line before the race ended. I assumed that it ended automatically when the 2nd last person finished.
 
awesome vid oma. i'm guessing what trick you do makes a difference? i'd been wondering about that for a while, but was never sure. and i was using the current wr's shortcut, on the first patch of grass on the river. is the goomba patch a better shortcut or...?

and yes ct i was using bowser bike. i was using my mii, but that was before i learned that characters actually make a difference...which is interesting...

i guess the ones that add more speed are the best, usually?
 
Very cool 0hm. And you say that you have since beaten that time trial? Well done.

I do like Funky Kong, he is my favorite character, but he is so overused. Pretty much every time trial I see is of Funky. Everyone loves the Funky monkey.


What? Characters make a difference? Is this like the DS game where each one has thier own weight?

Yeah the 2:30 I got used the shortcut the WR time uses. Although i'm not great at doing it yet, I seem to slow down a lot when i re-enter the rapids.

No idea if tricks make a difference or not, though I try to use short ones, so that I can hold up on the control stick to kind of nosedive which makes you fall a tiny bit faster I believe.

I've heard that on the jump out of the pipe, you can aim as far right as possible and use a mushroom + wheelie to go through the waterfall. Someone I know used that and got 2:30:113 so i'm guessing this shortcut is faster.
 
Hmm, I use the same strat as you 0ma, yet I'm a few seconds slower :/

edit: 2:34, 4 seconds improvement :)

Of course it is, if a bike can wheelie longer before making that turn, it will be faster, simple as that.

0ma, that's a pretty good time. Don't use the waterfall sc, it doesn't make much of a difference. I'll try to beat 2:30 @_@
 
Oh wow Characters do make a difference, this is great to explain why I prefer some characters to others. I hate Roselina but like Bowser, and now I know why. (extra Drift + Spe on Bowser)
 
What do you guys think of some sort of smogon time trial challenge? Like every week we choose a new track (either random or majority vote) and at the end of the week the person who obtained the fastest record wins :) I could keep track of it if you PM me your times, and I'll edit them into the OP. After every track is done, we could tally up who has the most records and the person is the smogon time trial champion!
Would enough of you participate to make it worthwhile?

I'd participate. But I don't have time for that. Maybe some on Friday, but other than that I don't have time. Btw, Ctrainer just screwed me over breaking his own rules.
 
Okay, and also could everyone say whether they would want random or majority voting for courses from now on? I think random because theres alot of stages and maybe not so many people :/

so shiny i played you in a total of 18 games and our record is 13 - 5 in my favor. i think im faster than you and i have only played 2 days.
