Overview
########
+ STRONK, has the equivalent of 259 base attack w/ Huge Power
+ Has access to Intimidate before mega-evolving, making setting up a bit easier
+ Great offensive/defensive typing alike; SR neutrality and only two weaknesses
+ Wrecks common defensive cores (eg Chansey+Tomo)
- Reliant on Sucker Punch vs. offensive teams
- Prone to status moves and Encore
- Prone to opposing Substitute users
Setup Sweeper
########
name: Setup Sweeper
move 1: Play Rough
move 2: Sucker Punch
move 3: Swords Dance / Substitute
move 4: Focus Punch / Iron Head / Knock Off
ability: Intimidate
item: Mawilite
evs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Spe
nature: Adamant
Moves
========
- Play Rough is Mawile's strongest STAB option, hitting anything that doesn't resist it extremely hard.
- Sucker Punch bypasses Mawile's speed issues, and is great at cleaning up offensive teams.
- Swords Dance boosts Mawile's sky-high attack even higher. Its attack stat hits 1356 after a SD (with Huge Power).
- Substitute allows Mawile to deal with its switchins better, since very few of its offensive checks can actually stomach a hit from Mawile. It also has the benefit of easing prediction w/ Sucker Punch and avoiding status.
- Focus Punch can be used in tandem with Substitute to break past its usual checks, such as Heatran and Ferrothorn. Also OHKOs Chansey.
- Iron Head is another STAB option, hitting Mega Venusaur harder than any of its other moves.
- Knock Off is a strong option to both deal damage and remove the opponent's item, most importantly removing Leftovers from the walls that like to switch into Mawile.
Set Details
========
- The EVs/nature maximize Mawile's attack while the rest is put into HP for added bulk
- EVs can be moved into speed to outpace certain faster threats (will add some alternate spreads here)
Usage Tips
========
- Make use of Mawile's many resistances, Dragon immunity, and Intimidate to find setup opportunities.
- Mawile forces a lot of switches with its huge attack stat, so don't be afraid to set up when given the chance.
- Sucker Punch, despite being one of Mawile's greatest assets, can backfire versus opposing status users, Encore users, and Substitute users.
Team Options
========
- Cleric support is amazing for Mawile since it lacks recovery and hates being statused. Chansey, Sylveon, and Vaporeon all make good partners.
- A switchin to Fire-types is greatly appreciated since Mawile tends to struggle with them. Bulky Water and Dragon-types such as Cyclohm, Rotom-W, and Vaporeon make good partners for this reason.
- Tomohawk has decent type synergy with Mawile, and can therefore pass Substitutes to it very easily. This allows you to nuke the opposition with Mawile at least once without worrying about Sucker Punch shenanigans, not to mention Focus Punch becomes much safer to use.
- Mawile is fearsome under Trick Room, and can plow through offensive teams without the need for Sucker Punch. Therefore, Trick Room setters can make good partners. Fidgit in particular is an excellent partner since it can provide two extra turns of Trick Room with Persistent.
Other Options
########
- Several other coverage options such as Rock Slide, Crunch, Fire Fang, Thunder Punch, and Ice Punch (let me know if one of these deserves a slash)
- Rest + Sleep Talk
- Pain Split
- Taunt
- Foul Play
Checks & Counters
########
**Fire-types**: Bulkier Fire-types such as Mollux and Heatran resist its STAB combination and can play around Sucker Punch with WoW/phazing.
**Status users**: Faster Will-O-Wisp users such as Rotom-W and Mega Charizard X give Mawile some trouble, and can check Mawile variants that lack Substitute.
**Bulky Attackers**: Anything faster that can stomach a Sucker Punch, such as Garchomp and Colossoil, can revenge kill Mawile. They can't be switched in safely, though.
**Steel-types**: If Mawile isn't carrying an appropriate coverage move, it can be easily be walled by Heatran, Ferrothorn, or Skarmory and become hazard setup bait.
