In Champions, Mega Chandelure doesn't gain any notable moves compared to Scarlet & Violet or Legend Z-A, with the exception of Mystical Fire to lower the opponent's SpA (very niche). It only loses Tera Blast, of course.
Pros :
- A monstrous SpAtt of 175, currently the highest in the metagame (excluding abilities), tied with
(which will be banned very soon anyway). It's even slightly higher than
's, which will likely be Uber in 2 seconds. Mega Chandelure can also boost its SpA and SpD with Calm Mind. - This is coupled with a very good offensive dual Ghost/Fire typing, which hits neutrally on the majority of currently available Pokémon, and is super effective on many of them. Currently, only
,
(and
),
(and
),
, and
can wall off this combo (the other Pokémon capable of doing so are either not viable or not currently available). - Mega-Chandelure possesses Energy Ball to hit Super Effectively on all the Pokémon mentioned above (except for
) - Mega-Chandelure's bulk is quite decent (60/110/110), and its dual typing grants it no fewer than 7 resistances, including Poison, Fairy, Fire, Grass, Ice, Steel, Bug (x2), and 2 immunities (Normal & Fighting). Having resistances to Fairy, Fire, Fighting, and Ice is truly powerful; Chandelure will be able to defensively handle a fair number of threats, especially since it has access to a form of healing thanks to Pain Split. And since its base HP is only 60, it will regain a significant amount of HP when using this move.
- Mega-Chandelure can take advantage of its base form's talents to either switch into Fire attacks and boost its SpA (Flash Fire), or burn Pokémon that don't inflict much damage and punish U-turns (Flame Body).
- Her ability Infiltrator allows her to ignore screens, like Aurora Veil from
, which will undoubtedly be played a lot. - Many Pokémon that could outclass Mega Chandelure are not in the game. Blacephalon is absent, so it has no direct Ghost/Fire type competitor. In such a limited metagame, Mega Chandelure has a slightly better chance. The current absence of Heavy Duty Boots, Choice Specs, and Life Orb further reduces competition with basic Pokémon.
- The current absence of
means that you could currently remove hazards reliably with Defog (Corviknight). - No
or
actually
Cons :
- Like all mega-evolutions, it cannot hold an item.
- It takes up a mega slot, depriving you of a potentially more powerful/useful mega evolution.
- His +20 gain in Base Attack is completely useless; he would have preferred to have it in another statistic.
- Its dual typing, while interesting, is hampered by five common and troublesome weaknesses: Ghost, Dark, Rock, Earth, and Water. The worst is its weakness to Stealth Rock, as it loses 25% of its HP upon entering the field and cannot use Heavy-Duty Boots (which are absent anyway). It is also vulnerable to numerous priority moves, such as Sucker Punch, Aqua Jet, and Shadow Sneak. And
,
,
,
,
, and
are all in the game. - Although Pain Split is nice, it would have been better to have a more reliable healing move to take advantage of its good bulk, like Recover.
- The 10 Speed boost is nice, but Mega-Chandelure's Speed is still insufficient. A Speed stat of 90 means it's outclassed by many Pokémon that can seriously threaten it, such as
,
,
,
,
,
,
with Dark Cover, and Choice Scarf users. Many Mega Pokémon also have a much higher Speed tier than it (
, :starmie-mega, etc…). - For a reason even unknown to reason, Chandelure doesn't have Nasty Plot, having to settle for Calm Mind to boost her SpA.
- Mega-Chandelure kept the same ability as its base form (Infiltrator), even though it would have preferred to gain a new toy. This ability will be useless for many games.
Potential sets :
Basic CM (Chandelure-Mega) @ Chandelurite
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 32 SpA / 2 SpD / 32 Spe
Timid Nature
- Calm Mind
- Shadow Ball
- Fire Blast / Flamethrower
- Energy Ball / Pain Split
A very basic set for Mega-Chandelure. Calm Mind will boost your SpA and SpD so that the former reaches high levels. Fire Blast is preferred for its immediate striking power, but you can also opt for Flamethrower if you're worried about missing your target. You can use Overheat to deal even more damage, but you'll lose SpA. Energy Ball will be useful for hitting the few important Pokémon that resist your STAB moves and would switch in on you, such as
You can use Pain Split instead of Calm Mind if you think you won't be able to set up Calm Mind; this way, you'll regain a lot of HP given your low base HP. Using Pain Split instead of Energy Ball will also cause significant HP loss to most Pokémon that resist your STAB moves, as they often have between 90 and 100 base HP, such as
Nuclear Wallbreaker (Chandelure-Mega) @ Chandelurite
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 32 SpA / 2 SpD / 32 Spe
Modest Nature
- Overheat
- Shadow Ball
- Energy Ball / Solar Beam
- Calm Mind
An even more ridiculous set that aims solely to maximize Mega-Chandelure's power, sacrificing some precious Speed. Overheat +1 will hit incredibly hard with a Modest Nature. If you use a Team Sun with
Bulky Sweeper (Chandelure-Mega) @ Chandelurite
Ability: Flash Fire / Flame Body
EVs: 32 HP / 21 Def / 10 SpA / 3 Spe
EVs: 32 HP / 21 Def / 10 SpD / 3 Spe
EVs: 32 HP / 31 Def / 3 Spe
Bold Nature
- Calm Mind / Acid Armor
- Shadow Ball
- Pain Split / Fire Blast / Acid Armor
- Substitute
A fun set I found on the OU SV forum, created by a user named Sultan. It simply swaps Lefto for a bulk boost. The original stat spread was used to outspeed max Speed
You can use both Calm Mind and Acid Armor, but you will only benefit from one STAB.
Check & Counters :
Dark types in general are Mega-Chandelure's main enemies, many of them resisting its 2 STAB moves, or are faster than it and powerful enough to OHKO it.
Teammates :
You absolutely need a Pokémon capable of chasing away or reflecting hazards, especially Stealth Rocks
You also need Pokémon whose defensive type covers Mega-Chandelure's weaknesses, such as Dark or Fairy type.
You can also pair Mega-Chandelure with Pokémon capable of setting up Staeth rock or Spikes, in order to weaken your Pokémon's switch-ins, which is facilitated by the absence of HDB.
Possible Team :
Here is my first team that I built for Mega-Chandelure:
Méga-Lugulabre 1ère Team
(The Kingambit set is for counter others Kingambit with Low Kick. Chuka Berry is to resist an opponent Gambit Low Kick)
CONCLUSION :
Honestly, the Mega-evolution of my favourite Pokémon will be a UU or RU Pokémon, with limited long-term viability in OverUsed. Currently, it benefits from the lack of items for basic Pokémon and the absence of key Pokémon, but unfortunately, many Pokémon capable of threatening it are present, especially since it's vulnerable to priority moves.
As it stands, it's simply a monster that hits incredibly hard, with decent bulk and numerous resistances, but also many weaknesses, average Speed, and a situational ability. However, this does not mean that Mega-Chandelure will not have a small niche in OU, especially in a metagame without real items.
EDIT : I have updated the EV spreads to better match the Champions Stat Points system.
