Mega Venusaur is a decent defensive check to the likes of Mega Mawile, Tapu Koko, and Rillaboom due to its solid bulk and defensive typing that grants it amazing resistances to Water-, Electric-, Grass-, and Fairy-type moves, allowing it to blanket check a large portion of the tier. Its ability separates it from other defensive Grass-types like Amoonguss and Tangrowth due to Thick Fat not letting it be immediately forced out by Ice- and Fire-types. Sludge Bomb allows Mega Venusaur to force out Grass-types such as Tangrowth, Rillaboom, Tapu Bulu, and Serperior, as well as threatening status on switch-ins such as Garchomp and Landorus-T and making Mega Venusaur more annoying to switch into. Sludge Bomb also lets it threaten Fairy-types such as Clefable and Tapu Fini, forcing them out. Earth Power lets Mega Venusaur threaten Steel- and Fire-types such as Heatran, Blaziken, Aegislash, and Mega Mawile. Hidden Power Fire lets Mega Venusaur nail Ferrothorn and Mega Scizor, as well as pressuring Corviknight and Skarmory. Leech Seed is another option that lets Mega Venusaur chip down its switch-ins as well as provides additional recovery, although it means it is easily taken advantage of by the aforementioned Hidden Power Fire targets. Mega Venusaur is also often easily overwhelmed due to its reliance on Synthesis for recovery, as well as facing major competition as a defensive Grass-type from the likes of Amoonguss, Tangrowth, and Tapu Bulu, who have better longevity due to Regenerator or Grassy Terrain, and who also do not take up a mega slot. The given EV spread allows it to outspeed Mega Mawile as well as take 2 Dark Pulses from Choice Specs Greninja after Stealth Rock or one layer of Spikes, with the rest in Defense to maximise its capability to check the likes of Mega Mawile and Rillaboom.
Mega Venusaur fits on bulkier teams that appreciate its rare ability to answer Mega Mawile, while also compressing a check to Electric-, Grass- and Water-types such as Mega Swampert, Greninja, Rillaboom, and Tapu Koko which can be a threat to bulkier teams. Due to Mega Venusaur being a poor check to Choice Specs Greninja on its own, Pokemon such as Tapu Fini, Clefable, and Kommo-O can alleviate the pressure Greninja puts on it if it is the sole check. Due to its susceptibility to Flying- and Psychic-type attacks from the likes of Flynium-Z Landorus-T, Tapu Lele, and Mega Medicham, Steel-type Pokemon such as Corviknight, Skarmory, Aegislash, and Heatran are stellar partners. Due to Mega Venusaur’s lack of consistent recovery in the long term, it is easily taken advantage of by VoltTurn teams, who slowly whittle it down. This makes Ground-type Pokemon such as Gliscor and Landorus-T good partners, as well as Rocky Helmet users such as Defensive Landorus-T, Corviknight and Skarmory to punish U-turns. Defoggers such as Tapu Fini and Corviknight are also stellar partners due to Mega Venusaur’s susceptibility to getting whittled down by Spikes and Stealth Rock. Wish support from the likes of Jirachi and Alomomola are extremely beneficial to Mega Venusaur’s, making up for its poor recovery. Heal Bell support from Pokemon such as Clefable and Chansey helps alleviate Mega Venusaur’s issue with being worn down by Burn.

Other Options
=============
Knock Off can be used over Hidden Power Fire to remove items such as Heavy-Duty Boots from Blissey and Slowking, and Leftovers from Corviknight, although it means Mega Venusaur is unable to pressure the likes of Mega Scizor, Corviknight, and Skarmory. Giga Drain is another option over Hidden Power Fire in order to hit Water-types such as Slowbro, Slowking, and Greninja, as well as disabling non Swords Dance variants of Gliscor’s from walling it, but it doesn’t do enough damage to the aforementioned Water-type Pokemon to warrant using it, as well as them being annoyed by Sludge Bomb.
Checks and Counters
===================
**Flying-types**: Pokemon such as Corviknight, Hawlucha, Skarmory, and Flyinium-Z Landorus-T are extremely threatening to Mega Venusaur, as they force it out with their Flying-type STAB moves, or in the case of Skarmory abuse it as setup fodder to set spikes. Gliscor especially can easily switch into Mega Venusaur, not fearing any of its hits, and can passively recover off Leech Seed damage with Poison Heal while using it as setup fodder with Swords Dance.
**Psychic-types**: Psychic-types such as Tapu Lele, Mega Medicham, Mega Latias, and Mega Gallade pressure Mega Venusaur with their Psychic-type STAB. However, they all struggle to switch in as well as fear a Sludge Bomb poison. Reuniclus is also an exemplary check, not fearing the secondary effects of Sludge Bomb or Leech Seed and using Mega Venusaur as setup fodder.
**Chip Damage**: Due to Mega Venusaur’s horrible recovery, it is easily worn down from Entry Hazards such as Spikes and Stealth Rock, as well as being burnt. This means it often struggles to check the Pokemon it is supposed to check as its Recovery options do not last enough long term.
