I GOT MELANCHOLY DREAMS OUT THE 06
The end of Reg I marks a turning point in BSS, with Reg J being a completely new ruleset. As always with ruleset transitions, I would like to show off my favorite team from Reg I.

This team is very similar to my Reg G team and by intention. I felt the two restricted meta gave me room to push myself to improve on the team even further, and I think I accomplished that.
MUSIC CW
This team report is partly a love letter to the drill subgenre of rap that I have fallen in love with over the past year or so. While I wholeheartedly love this genre of music and recommend you check it out I do also recognize that the themes and lyrics of this music is not for everyone and the candid discussion of the darkest parts of street life may be too much for some to handle. Please be mindful when checking the songs I link to.

I said Koraidon was one of the best restricted picks in Reg G, and the same holds true for Reg I. With your pick of a second restricted to back up Koraidon’s stratospheric power it becomes even more potent as a wallbreaker capable of clearing a path for your cleaner of choice. The set remains unchanged from Reg G’s banded foray, no compromise on power and operating with the simple goal of firing off the strongest attacks it can to break through even the sturdiest of teams. Flame Charge is taken to allow Koraidon to run through weakened teams that would try to stop a sweep by revenge killing it, and in tandem with Tera Fire it hits deceptively hard. Koraidon has a surprisingly deep bag of tricks, but sometimes the best course of action is to just throw yourself at any obstacle with reckless abandon, and that’s what this set does best.

Say hello to perhaps the single most dangerous Pokemon in generation nine. Calyrex Shadow quite literally has zero counters thanks to Terastallization solving its two main issues it had in gen eight, a rather poor defensive typing and mild coverage issues. While Koraidon went all in on power, Calyrex makes the most of its blistering Speed with a Choice Scarf set. 156 Speed EVs with a Timid nature allows Caly S to outspeed the base 135, allowing it to threaten them even if it loses its Scarf. After its STAB moves, Draining Kiss is taken in tandem with Tera Fairy for not only coverage, but a source of recovery, making it deceptively difficult to take down, especially with its bulk investment. Trick can neuter would be walls such as Ting-Lu by not allowing them to switch moves. This set pairs beautifully with Koraidon, cleaning up teams weakened by its assault or systematically dismantling teams in tandem with other teammates. If all else fails, it can simply rely on snowballing to a win by sniping just one KO.

The eternal partner to Koraidon, Flutter Mane is near essential on any Sun centric team. This set rounds out the Choice item trio, utilizing a standard Choice Specs set to pile on even more offense. Tera Normal allows Flutter Mane to act as an emergency check to Calyrex Shadow, and Perish Song can lock down end games against bulkier teams while also disrupting the odd Baton Pass chain. There’s not much to say about Flutter Mane that hasn’t been said already, it’s a great mon and pulls its weight very consistently.

I’m tired of him breathing I’m taking his breath
Chien-Pao continues to be one of the most dangerous mons in all of BSS, and it has more targets than ever with so many of the top restricteds being weak to its STAB combination. Icicle Crash is essential, as is Sucker Punch, Tera Blast with Electric Tera offers a way to smack Ho-Oh, Kyogre, and Dondozo for big damage, even securing a clean OHKO on the latter two should it get an opportunity to Swords Dance. Tera Electric also has limited defensive use, being able to dodge the many Thunder Waves that are thrown around to attempt to temper the absolutely ludicrous power of the restricted pokes. This free turn can allow Chien-Pao to secure an important KO or boost up for a sweep. It has to be played more carefully with the higher power level, but Chien-Pao is more than capable of hanging in Reg I.

I’m a motherfuckin problem
Dondozo my beloved. Dondozo is a wonderful check to so many physical attackers, and deceptively dangerous as always. Given the presence of Miraidon, I’ve opted for a Curse set over the formerly more standard Yawn Protect set. Fissure is essential to make sure threats like Miraidon and Calyrex Shadow are wary of recklessly switching in, and Covert Cloak is taken as the item for a number of reasons, firstly it turns Ho-Oh into complete setup fodder if it doesn’t have Whirlwind, and it completely sits on any Gargsnacl. Cloak also has the benefit of protecting Dondozo from ill timed flinches from the likes of opposing Chien-Pao. Fairly simple set but very effective in this meta.

Ting-Lu is perhaps the most important Pokemon in Reg I. With the popularity and power of Miraidon and Calyrex Shadow, an Electric and Ghost resist is a must for any serious team, Ting-Lu is both in one slot. Here I’ve opted for an offensive set, making use of Assault Vest and Ting-Lu’s high HP stat to invest in max Attack to more directly threaten the things it checks. Ruination is an incredibly safe move to throw out, providing consistent chip to anything that comes in. Heavy Slam well, slams Flutter Mane and Tera Fairy variants of Calyrex, finally Payback offers a Dark STAB that can actually grab KOs, essential for making sure Calyrex can’t get too out of hand. Ting-Lu is very key to making this team tick, and is one of the most consistently useful members.

There we have it, a team that makes use of the formats top dogs in order to facilitate constant aggression even when on defense. Regulation I was very fun to me, I tend to perform better in higher power formats, and have more fun doing so.
My good friend luisin recently got promoted to BSS leader and I had the honor of submitting his Room Owner nomination, I’ve said this to him in private but I wanted to again congratulate him on this promotion. He is one of the main reasons I stuck around BSS and Smogon, and motivator for me to clean up my act to allow me to work my way up to the positions I have myself. BSS is in good hands, and maybe eventually I’ll be able to join you in leading the community that has given me so much to smile about.
