Pokémon Mesprit

:mesprit:
Did you know that Mesprit has 80 base HP, which is 5 more than the other 2 lake guardians? Why didn't it have 75 base HP and 85 base speed or something, we'll never know

Type: Psychic
Base Stats: 80 HP / 105 Atk / 105 Def / 105 SpA / 105 SpD / 80 Spe
Abilities: Levitate
Notable Moves:
Drain Punch
Fire Punch
Ice Punch
Play Rough
Thunder Punch
U-Turn
Zen Headbutt
Dazzling Gleam
Energy Ball
Future Sight
Grass Knot
Ice Beam
Mystical Power
Psychic
Psyshock
Shadow Ball
Stored Power
Tera Blast
Thunderbolt
Calm Mind
Encore
Healing Wish
Light Screen
Nasty Plot
Reflect
Stealth Rock
Thunder Wave
Trick
Trick Room

New Move:
Mystical Power - Power: 70 Accuracy: 90%. 100% chance to raise the user's SpA by 1

This would be alright for Mesprit, but Uxie is a better user of this move. Mesprit can probably survive for a bit to utilise it, but it's too slow and a bit too frail.

Pros:
Stats are evenly split for the most part, allowing physical, special, and utility movesets to be run on Mesprit
Lots of utility moves such as dual screens, trick room, rocks, thunder wave, and healing wish
A wide variety of moves allows it to be less predictable
80/105/105 bulk is respectable, and a ground immunity certainly helps

Cons:
80 speed is very slow, and it faces steep competition from Hoopa-Unbound as a slow and offensive psychic type
Historically Mesprit has never been good at higher tiers due to being outclassed by Azelf and Cresselia, as well as the pixies, and the current OU power level will mean it is very much going to be outclassed
Pure psychic is not a very good defensive typing
No way of changing its speed tier outside of Trick Room
Does not have any form of recovery outside of Rest

Terastal Potential:
Tera Electric results in a 0 weakness mon in conjunction with Levitate, as well as powers up Thunderbolt
Tera Steel is another good defensive typing and grants immunity to Toxic
Tera Fairy allows it to flip matchups against common OU mons such as Chien-Pao and Samurott-Hisui, resisting their dark moves and firing back a strong Dazzling Gleam or Draining Kiss
Tera Psychic to boost up psychic-type attacks more

Potential Sets:
Calm Mind
Mesprit @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 SpD
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Calm Mind
- Mystical Power / Stored Power
- Dazzling Gleam / Draining Kiss
- Thunder Wave / Encore

This set capitalises on Mesprit's natural bulk combined with its respectable 105 special attack. Calm Mind helps against powerful special attackers such as Magearna, and boosts your own power to potentially kill the opposing mon. Thunder Wave is generally annoying and helps stop a sweep, and Encore is an alternative to catch double dance Magearna setting up to have an easier time killing it. Tera Fairy with fairy attacks, as said before, flips the matchup against dark mons.

Screens
Mesprit @ Light Clay
Ability: Levitate
Tera Type: Fairy / Electric
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpA / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
- Reflect
- Light Screen
- Mystical Power / Psychic
- U-turn / Encore / Thunder Wave / Healing Wish

This variant of Mesprit uses the combination of its natural bulk and its decent special attack to set up screens. U-Turn is a pivoting move that cannot be stopped, and this allows Mesprit to easier pivot into an ally to potentially sweep compared to, say, Grimmsnarl due to Parting Shot being blocked by Gholdengo and taunt. Overall, Uxie is probably better at this niche, and Mew has the same set of traits Mesprit has, so this only works if your opponent expects Mesprit to do something else

Special Choice Scarf
Mesprit @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Levitate
Tera Type: Fairy / Electric
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Thunderbolt / Dazzling Gleam / Shadow Ball / Ice Beam / Energy Ball
- Thunderbolt / Dazzling Gleam / Shadow Ball / Ice Beam / Energy Ball
- Mystical Power
- U-turn / Trick

Mesprit not dying very easily allows it to more easily pick up a Choice Scarf set, utilising the snowballing power of Mystical Power to greater effect than Azelf can, and its decent 105 special attack means it offers more offensive pressure than Uxie. U-Turn is a good pivoting move, and its coverage can be chosen depending on the team. Trick also helps cripple potential walls such as Clodsire and Skeledirge

Nasty Plot
Mesprit @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
Tera Type: Fairy / Electric / Steel
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Encore
- Nasty Plot
- Thunderbolt / Dazzling Gleam / Shadow Ball / Ice Beam / Energy Ball
- Psychic / Psyshock

This variation of Mesprit uses Encore to stop opposing setup, then sets up a Nasty Plot and proceeding to use its coverage move and psychic STAB to (hopefully) get a few kills.

Anti-Lead
Mesprit @ Focus Sash
Ability: Levitate
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Healing Wish
- Stealth Rock
- Thunder Wave
- Encore

Your goal with this set is to use your slow speed to your advantage, underspeeding hazard setters and Encore them into Stealth Rock, then either set up your own rocks or paralyse an opponent. Then, store Healing Wish for later use. Focus Sash ensures that you live a hit unless it's a multi-hit move so you can paralyse or set up rocks (or even both!)

Alright I'm not gonna sugar-coat it any longer with more sets, Mesprit :mesprit: will not end up anywhere near OU and I fully expect it to be down there in NU/PU very soon. All of the above sets might find some niche in OU or UU, but I don't think they will become mainstream.

I made the uxie analysis, and personally I think that mystical power just really isn't that good of move on uxie due to moveset syndrome and Most sets with psychic moves already used calm mind.
