[OVERVIEW]
Metagross is a solid choice for a bulky attacker due to its insanely high Attack, its resistances to Ice- and Fairy-type moves, and it not taking up a restricted slot, unlike Solgaleo and Necrozma-DM. Furthermore, it is one of the select few Pokemon that has Clear Body, which allows Metagross to stay safe from Intimidate or stat drops from opposing Max Moves. Its large number of resistances and its common weaknesses in Ground, Ghost, Dark, and Fire make it an excellent Weakness Policy user. Metagross appreciates Pokemon that can activate its Weakness Policy such as Spectrier and Tornadus. Despite all of its positive traits, Metagross can be shut down by Pokemon such as Gigantamax Charizard and Calyrex-S. It is also reliant on Dynamax to make the most of its offensive capabilities.
[SET]
name: Weakness Policy
move 1: Iron Head
move 2: Stomping Tantrum
move 3: Rock Slide / Ice Punch
move 4: Protect
item: Weakness Policy
ability: Clear Body
nature: Adamant
evs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
[SET COMMENTS]
* Iron Head is Metagross's Steel-type attack of choice, as it can flinch foes and is perfectly accurate. Its powerful Max Steelspike is useful for boosting Metagross's already high Defense and can severely damage Calyrex-I and Grimmsnarl.
* Stomping Tantrum is used in order to break through Pokemon such as Zacian-C, Incineroar, and Solgaleo with the added bonus of boosting Metagross's Special Defense through Max Quake.
* Rock Slide is able to hurt Pokemon such as Charizard and Zapdos while Metagross is Dynamaxed. Ice Punch can be run in order to punch holes through Ground- and Grass-types such as Landorus-T, Groudon, and Rillaboom.
[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
Zen Headbutt allows Metagross to target Pokemon such as Venusaur with a powerful Max Mindstorm whilst setting Psychic Terrain. Bullet Punch is a reliable priority option, but it cuts into Metagross's coverage. Additionally, Thunder Punch is able to punish Kyogre and Lapras as well as block sleep moves like Yawn, Spore, and Sleep Powder with Max Lightning setting up Electric Terrain. Assault Vest is another valid option to allow Metagross to stand up to Calyrex-S, but such a set is considerably less powerful than Weakness Policy.
