hello smogon! i wanted to make a thread about this excellent saga of games that is the metal gear solid series. i got the HD collection around christmas and bought MGS1 off of PSN. i had played a spot of four, but stopped because i was confused. now i have just beat 1 and 2 and so far i am thrilled!

anyway, topics to discuss could include:

what do you think of metal gear rising: revengeance (or whatever it is called now)? i am under the impression that it's more of an action game than a stealth game. it is being developed by the same company that did Bayonetta, so i don't know if that is any indication of anything...

what the FUCK will they do for MGS5? four pretty much wrapped up the series...no protagonist that kojima can do will top snake (also why people were so hostile towards raiden)

which is your favorite metal gear? for me personally, it's MGS2. MGS1 had a better story (also less ridiculous) and more charm, but the depth of gameplay was not as incredible as MGS2. when i first held up a guard in MGS2, a smile crept on my face as i just began to scratch the surface of all the things that you could do. MGS3 (which i have started) is cool so far, but i'm so used to the radar and such that i suck at it. a lot. (please give me tips guys seriously i suck a LOT)

and anything to do with the series really!

I'm a massive Metal Gear fan, I think I completed MGS1 like 8 times when I was younger. I didn't fully understand the story or anything, but just going through the area, watching the cutscenes, fighting the bosses (seriously I'm a master at beating Liquid on Hard now). In the MGS games, it's the story, music and atmosphere in general which make the games for me. I suppose that's why I've been playing them for so many years.

MGS2 is like 10 or 11 years old now, but it's still my favourite MGS game and one of my favourite games ever. I have to agree, the depth in MGS2 is amazing compared to MGS1, it feels like a more refined MGS1 imo. The graphics back then were stunning too. Once you get your head around the story, it's really really clever how everything comes into place, especially if you note the amount of similarities from the S3 plan. I plan to get the HD collection soon, just for Peace Walker (and because I can't be bothered to set up my PS2 again). As it is though, I'm broke and it's £30 around here so I have to hold off for now.

There seems to be rumours that MGS5 is going to be based on Big Boss, this recently released artwork seems to point towards that. MG: Rising (or whatever it is now) seems to be based after MGS4...so I'm wondering how they're going to
make Raiden become a ninja again.

I also intend to get my Big Boss emblems on each game, I've currently only got my one for MGS4 atm, and will focus on MGS1 in the near future when I have a good spare bit of time. Finally, I'd like to say the MGS series has some of the best music in gaming, probably top 5.

Im not that excited for Rising, maybe because it just a spinoff and they changed the storyline from before MGS4 to after, which make it less interesting.

I have no idea what they will do for MGS5 and beyond. I would want to see the series continued even if it is with Raiden. I never really hated Raiden, most people did because they found him to be a pussy or something and no liked how he was the main character in MGS2 over Snake.

Im really hoping for a remake of MGS1 since the setting was so amazing. I dont see why they wouldnt do it.

If MGS1 came out first on PS2 it would have been my favorite metal gear, but MGS3 is probably my favorite. It was the best all around game. MGS4 would have been a perfect game if wasnt so short and the story wasnt so complex. The story in MGS2 was also complex and I found Raiden/Otacon/Emma/Rose to really fucking annoying. 3 had a good story, gameplay, settting and the maybe the coolest bosses.

Stop reading this thread and go play MGS3. It's the best in the series. Naked Snake > Solid Snake.

I got into MGS kind of backwards. I started with 4 and now I'm working my way back to the beginning. Currently I'm playing 3 on MGSHD, but the controls don't feel as intuitive as MGS4 so I've been having some trouble adapting. Interestingly enough, MGS3DS adopted 4's controls when used with the slide pad pro. But now that I have the HD collection, I don't feel like shelling out another 30+ dollars for the same game.

I love MGS, it's probably my second favorite series in gaming, great gameplay and story.

These games are so close in my book that if I rated them it would be something like this.
MGS3: 10/10
MGS4: 9.9/10
MGS1:(9.89/10)
MGS2: (9.5/10)

Putting MGS4 ahead of MGS1 is hard for me, but the gameplay in MGS4 was probably the best of any game I've ever played. MGS3 had great gamplay and the story is among my favorite stories across any medium. MGS2 was a fucking awesome game, but compared to the legendary 1, 3, 4, it's much farther down the list.

EDIT:

I got into MGS kind of backwards.

I cannot imagine a worse series to get into backwards (although playing 3 before any of the other games is acceptable).
