Format Discussion Metronome Battle

While Spicy Spray is still legal, I’ve been experimenting with a core built around it rather than trying to ignore it.

I’ve been using Mega-Meganium with Flower Veil to help mitigate opposing Spicy Spray users, paired with Mega Venusaur running Spicy Spray. The idea is to adapt to the mechanic instead of trying to fight against it directly.

Flower Veil helps limit the impact of opposing setups, while Venusaur benefits from applying the same pressure back. In a Metronome Battle environment, where consistency is limited anyway, this has been surprisingly effective.

If you can’t stop the meta, adapt to it.

Current sets:
Venusaur-Mega @ Weakness Policy
Ability: Spicy Spray
Tera Type: Ghost
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Def / 252 SpA / 252 SpD / 252 Spe
Quiet Nature
- Metronome

Meganium-Mega @ Choice Specs
Ability: Flower Veil
Tera Type: Stellar
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Def / 252 SpA / 252 SpD / 252 Spe
Quiet Nature
- Metronome

honestly i think the heavy usage of chandelure-mega is just cause of spicy spray right now. once it gets banned the format will go back to having more diversity (probably)
Yeah, Chandy-Mega's probably the best Fire-type in the meta and therefore the mon that lets you run other, fun abilities the best (Guts feels like fishing for opposing Spicy Spray and whiffing hard if you miss - at least Unaware whiffed less during Commander Tatsudozo metas).

Axe Spicy Spray, and I'm jumping right back to physical strats with Golurk-Mega and Absol-Mega-Z. Slightly more diversity, at least!

Got to around 1500 with a pretty decent GXE for the tier, so just wanted to share some findings that I got from climbing with this account and testing some teams with my main account.

For my climbing with this account, I have pretty much stuck to this team:

Bug 1 (Heracross-Mega) @ Choice Band
Ability: Intrepid Sword
Tera Type: Ghost
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Def / 252 SpA / 252 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Metronome

Bug 2 (Heracross-Mega) @ Choice Band
Ability: Intrepid Sword
Tera Type: Ghost
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Def / 252 SpA / 252 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Metronome

From all my time on the ladder, Double Bug HO has been the most consistent team at generating wins for me. This is not some new team; it has been used pretty much since the beginning (with different tweaks on what ability to run in the metagame), and it still continues to produce good results. I just opt for CB + Intrepid Sword for raw damage; you can opt for other abilities mentioned in the thread like Comatose / Guts, but the Attack boost from that combo has been more consistent at covering most situations in Metronome battles. You still hit like a truck, even when burned by the abundance of Spicy Spray users in the whole metagame right now, and your damage from Struggle with this combo comes in clutch when you get unlucky with stuff like Imprison / Taunt / Torment. Plus, the games end quick when you load up HO, so you don't have to drag out extra turns.

For other stuff, I really enjoyed testing out both old and new strategies. Some teams that used to feel very strong/good in previous metas like Double Pecharunts, Double Imposter Blisseys, and Double Flower Veil Mega Venusaurs don't feel as "good" to use in the current metagames; maybe it is just me, but bulky Pokemon do not feel as bulky anymore in the meta. With offense dominating due to the abundance of over-stated Mega Evolutions in Metronome Battle, it feels more rewarding to just load up newer Pokemon compositions like Double Mega Chandelures. I also really liked trying out some of the strategies proposed in this thread btw (s/o to the Galvanize Mega-Eel w/ Hadron Engine Mega-Amp team). Also, echoing what was said above and please ban Spicy Spray. It is such a degenerate ability that has super easy activation conditions and essentially no drawbacks; getting free status restricts the metagame a lot, and Metronome Battle would have much more diversity in teambuilding if it got booted out.

haven't been in the thread lately, figured i'd give my thoughts

1. yeah please god get spicy spray out of here, it really is just toxic chain 2.0 and we all remember how annoying that was

2. regarding a potential ghost type ban, i'm of the opinion that instead unbanning steel types might lead to a more interesting metagame. with how dominant these powerful attackers (heracross, ampharos, chandelure) are at the moment, i feel letting out some tankier mons like mega steelix, h-goodra, and melmetal could do a decent job as a counterbalance. there is of course the risk that mons like both m-lucarios, m-excadrill, or the aforementioned melmetal could just lead to new hyper powerful bozos ruling the meta, but i think it'd be interesting nonetheless

Can we have a metagame survey in June? I don't really enjoy how so many council actions are just based upon us forum members just complaining about a certain threat, instead of properly gauging the community's level of interest through surveys. For example, while many of us have called for a ban on both Spicy Spray and Chandelure-Mega (without much opposition), only Spicy Spray was banned. Why exactly is that?

I'd like to reference the post made by Game Brain while back when Pecharunt was legal.

Back then, dual Pecharunt with Ice Scales was terrorizing the tier, and ultimately, Pecharunt was banned in May, seemingly only because more people in the forums (including me) talked about banning it than Ice Scales. Why couldn't the Ice Scales ban option be explored more thoroughly? I really don't like this repetition of how only the elements with the most community outcry get banned because it is ridiculously inconsistent and just destroys potentially great ideas through opaqueness.

For example, before Pecharunt was banned, I also made a post questioning if Tera Ghost was potentially banworthy, and pyuk, Methridium, and mattc all voiced their somewhat nuanced support for it. So why was absolutely no action taken then either or any form of acknowledgement from the council?

I refuse to believe that this metagame is extremely casual and made just for "fun", as if it was, we wouldn't have any tiering action whatsoever. So then if this meta is supposed to be decently competitive, why is this community so stale and why is tiering action so slow? I asked for a survey almost two years ago and didn't get a response, and we still haven't gotten anything. This generation is coming to a near close, and I would really hate it for our community to continue to remain this boring and inactive entering generation 10.

Honestly, I’d be on board with banning Tera Ghost. It really is just a ban-aid for mons with sub optimal typing and does invalidate a lot of cool metronome things. Maybe even banning Tera as a whole since I feel like once ghost goes it is just a question of “what is the next best defensive Tera?”.

As for mega chandelure, hands down one of the most dominant mons in the meta right now but I feel like that is largely due to its innate immunity to spicy spray. I feel like it should have some time with spicy spray out of the picture to see what how it actually does.

I totally agree, people see this as silly and I was just chatting with some low ladder player while on a new laddering alt about it, who was running I believe binacle and Venomoth or something like that. I think that this format, while enjoyable, is a legitimate ladder with legitimate players and a legitimate competition. I second a metagame survey!!!! Let’s make mets a serious format

one idea I have is that a similar format could be made like doubles 2v2 but 6 mons in team preview instead of 4

banning tera altogether might be a bit too much, i feel like it'd discourage people from using lots of pokemon that aren't innately ghost type so it'd just make the ghost prevalence way worse lol. banning tera ghost on its own sounds fine though, people moving to other defensive teras definitely sounds better than tons of ghost mons

This is my team I have used to top the ladder a couple times:

Sword (Heracross-Mega) @ Choice Band
Ability: Intrepid Sword
Tera Type: Ghost
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Def / 252 SpA / 252 SpD / 252 Spe

Shield (Guzzlord) @ Weakness Policy

Apparently Starminite is legal in addition to Chimechite, even though Medichamite is fully banned. The ban of Spicy Spray clearly didn't hinder Chandelure-Mega's usage at all, as it reached
A GOD DAMN 70% USAGE in 1630 WEIGHTED STATS!!!

Do you know what this means? This means that almost 3/4 OF THE TEAMS BY THE TOP PLAYERS ON HIGH LADDER USED CHANDELURE-MEGA.
Do you know what Chandelure-Mega's most common partner is? CHANDELURE-MEGA
1780793272863.png

I believe people are abusing Chandelure-Mega to ridiculous heights to just fish for a special attack and instantly destroy their opponents' Pokemon. By using Storm Drain, Chandelure-Mega can add another immunity to its already amazing typing while boosting its Special Attack, and seeing Plus and Beads of Ruin following Storm Drain just show how ridiculous the multiplier stacking has become. Chandelure's innate Ghost typing makes it far better than Ampharos-Mega, which needs Terastalization, and it allows Chandelure to use Tera Stellar to stack ANOTHER multiplier while staying extremely safe.

Now that Spicy Spray has been banned, and after playing the format for a little over two months, I decided to stop focusing on maximizing my win rate and instead focus on what I find most fun. With that in mind, I built this duo:

Mr. Rime (Flutter Mane) @ Choice Specs
Ability: Aerilate
Tera Type: Stellar
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Def / 252 SpA / 252 SpD / 252 Spe
Relaxed Nature
- Metronome

BOOM (Happiny) @ Ability Shield
Ability: Innards Out
Level: 98
Tera Type: Normal
EVs: 236 HP / 252 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Rash Nature
IVs: 0 Def / 0 SpD
- Metronome

The strategy is pretty straightforward: get Happiny KOed as quickly as possible. Its defenses are minimized to make that happen, while its HP is kept high enough for Innards Out to take down most of the common Pokémon in the metagame.

Since Flutter Mane is expected to spend most games fighting alone after Happiny goes down, I opted for a Relaxed nature to improve its physical bulk. Aerilate was chosen because a large portion of Metronome's offensive rolls are Normal-type attacks. Converting them into Flying-type attacks both increases their power and prevents Ghost-types from freely ignoring them.

The team is obviously more of a fun gimmick than a serious laddering option, but I've had surprisingly decent results with it and, more importantly, it's been a lot of fun to use.

smh peaked number 9 with this
Regirock @ Mirror Herb

Tera Type: Ghost

Currently 2nd on the ladder (probably not much for longer lol). Since the Spicy Spray ban, I think the metagame has been less restrictive and more interesting to play, despite Mega Chandelure being everywhere. I don't think that trend is expected to end anytime soon; the Pokemon itself is very over-tooled (Burn Immunity / Innate Ghost Typing / Good Speed / Hits like a truck), but I do not think that that itself is ban worthy imo.

The metagame itself is very offensive right now; you got the usual suspects like Mega Chandelure, Mega Heracross, and Mega Venusaur, but there has been a lot of Intrepid Sword Mega Starmie and the new offensive Ghost-type Mega Golurk recently. Mega Starmie (and ig to a degree, Mega Chimecho) decently Imposter-proof your squad in one slot, which is a big deal when u got Double Imposter Blissey seeing significant usage.

I think having an offensive metagame favors the old squad of Double Imposter Blissey, which was the squad I used to climb this time (finally retired the Double Intrepid Sword CB Mega-Heracross). You outlast offense vs offense very well, and you also don't have to deal with that many fat vs fat matchups to potentially get a good draw on moves.

i personally think various forms of stall are VERY good right now and although any team can be ice scales cheese for chandy, those teams struggle vs dual heracross. now why do i think stall is good? things like regirock can do simply more damage than it takes and can easily stall blissey (barring explode/ohko shenanigans) im still trying to crack the final code but no luck thus far

I personally dislike this meta. I have been using Chimecho-Mega paired with Venusaur-Mega with and I only peaked around 1418. I am currently sitting at 1300.
Proof

Introduction
I made my team after being inspired to prove that Steel Pokemon are not broken in this metagame and are less effective than being banned. While I know Chimecho-Mega is likely not a representative of how all Steel Pokemon would perform in Metronome Battles, I hope that these games can at least show that a unanimous ban on all Steel Pokemon is unnecessarily restrictive and that we should ban Steels on a case-by-case basis instead.

Chimecho-Mega's stats are bad and it really is just a glorified Bronzong with some extra SpA. The extra Psychic type only weakens Chimecho-Mega against any Tera Ghost Pokemon using a Ghost move, which are ridiculously common in this meta. Because of this, a more stally team cannot work because it has poor bulk compared to Ting-Lu or Regirock, but I still decided to invest in extra Special Defense using a Sassy nature to hope that Chimecho might eventually get off a supereffective special attack. I chose Intimidate as my base ability to increase Chimecho-Mega's effective bulk as well.

:venusaur-mega:
Venusaur-Mega @ Mirror Herb

I chose Venusaur-Mega as Chimecho-Mega's partner because two Chimecho-Mega's on one team is extremely bad and I wanted a decently bulky attacker. In addition, I preferably wanted a Fire-weak Pokemon so I could synergize with Primordial Sea and eliminate the Fire weakness from Chimecho-Mega. This almost halves the number of supereffective moves that can hit Chimecho-Mega (it has Levitate so it is already immune to ground).
Screenshot 2026-06-11 105718.png

I used a Brave nature, Tera Stellar, and a Mirror Herb so my Venusaur-Mega could be more offensive and counter any Defiant/Competitive/Intrepid Sword Pokemon.

Synergies
Getting an opponent's Forest's Curse on Chimecho-Mega is decent, as it adds immunity to Powder moves and Leech Seed, and it adds resistances to Water and Electric moves in exchange for a weakness to Bug moves (kinda rare) and neutrality to Ice and Flying.

Doom Desire STAB is awesome, and having immunities to Ground and Poison moves is great. (I don't know where my Doom Desire game is)

Bad Matchups
Scrappy or Clear Amulet fully invalidates Intimidate.

Both Chandelure-Mega and Camerupt-Mega with some variation of Storm Drain completely destroy me. They completely ruin the x1.5 boost to Water moves and provide almost no opportunity for a KO. Some Camerupt-Megas can also go for Desolate Land, which puts both Chimecho-Mega and Venusaur-Mega at high risk of getting KOed by a Fire move.

Special spam still destroys me through RNG.
https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen9metronomebattle-2626663460?p2

You would think that using a Mega Stone would make my team great into Imposters, but this fails to work because Chimecho is always faster than minimum speed Blissey, so Intimidate can't even activate properly and instead gets used against me. The only Imposters Chimecho-Mega works reliably against are Pikachu-Partner ones.

Conclusion
While Chimecho-Mega was fun to build around and play, it leaves much to be desired. It is less bulky than the average Tera Ghost Pokemon and is heavily dependent on its partner Pokemon to deal damage due to its pitiful 50 Atk stat, which is lower than Chandelure-Mega. Levitate is a decent ability, but is not effective against the multitude of Ghost STABs in the tier nor Pokemon that can hit Chimecho-Mega with Fire moves. Despite Chimecho-Mega's existence being a faulty oversight, I do not believe it to be a broken Pokemon and fully support an unban on the majority of Steel Pokemon.

I also want Chandelure-Mega to be banned. 70% usage is absolutely ridiculous and its damage and effective bulk is clearly greater than that of Ampharos-Mega by using Storm Drain, Tera Stellar, and being a Ghost. Chandelure-Mega teams existing alongside Golurk-Mega and Starmie-Mega teams only serve to completely choke more balanced structures and force the metagame further into hard stally teams or extreme KOers.

Peaked top 20 with this, trying to find what pairs well with M-Chandelure apart from another M-chandelure. Seems the way to beat the meta could be to use half the meta.

The main idea is to use the ghost tera on Mon1 and the spa raising immunabilities to block out four types of moves, and after a few turns you usually end up with 1k+ spa on either of the mons. M-amph with specs can also be used in slot 1, but I opted for a mon which would deal enough damage even if I kept rolling physical (which happens a lot more than I expected). M-electross can also be used in the exact same role with band or specs.
This team beats most combos, including opposite m-chand pair quite often. Even against teams with scrappy or mind's eye it works well enough, as abomasnow is bulky. It is kinda 50-50 against different forms of stall (considering I lost a tour by losing two in a row against bonk's stall, Chandelure wanted to axe kick dusclops). You need to be lucky enough to roll damage on multiple turns.
