Other Metagames MonoBug-team (mostly OU)

I made this team as a bit of a slap in the face to one of my friends. He hates Bug-Type and believes them inferior to other types. Our little group doesn’t have a a whole lot of restrictions on usage beyond “No Legendaries” and “No repeat Items/Pokemon,” Which is good, cause I’m pretty sure my Scolipede is super banned in competitive.
Also, First Post hype!

Scolipede @ Focus Sash
Speed boost
Jolly
252HP, 252Speed, 4Sdef

Protect
Iron Defense
Sword Dance
Baton Pass

My team’s lead. Protect gives a free speed boost every other turn or so, Iron defense buffs and Baton Pass into Volcarona and Galvantula, Swords dance buffs and passes into Scizor or Crustle. Baton pass for buff transfers.
I’ve considered switching Iron Defense for Megahorn, but it hasn’t posed a big problem as of yet.
Sash is on in case i get hit by something bad like Stone Edge or Fire Blast

Scizor @ Life Orb
Technician
Adamant
252Atk, 252Speed, 4HP

Bullet Punch
Bug Bite
Superpower
Sword Dance

My prefered Physical beatstick. Bullet Punch+Technician+STAB= Lots of damage. Bug Bite is there as alternate STAB, mainly for things like Amoonguss. Superpower for coverage, because it usually hits what BBite an BPunch can’t. Usually I’m able to have Scolipede Baton Pass a Sword Dance or two at Scizor, But i gave Scizor Sword Dance too in case I’m unable to.
Life Orb bumps that damage even more so it’s easier to depend on Bullet punch.

Fire Blast
Bug Buzz
Giga Drain
Quiver Dance

My prefered Special beater. Fire Blast is my main STAB move. Bug Buzz is another good STAB and it hits through Substitute. Giga Drain offers great coverage and some manner of recovery. Quiver Dance makes Volcarona scarier, and I can usually get it off at least once if i can Baton Pass Scolipede’s Iron Defense.
Charti lets it survive Stone Edge and Rock Slide.

Crustle @ Expert Belt
Sturdy

X-Scissor
Stone Edge
Earthquake
Shell Smash

Secondary beat stick. I prefer to use Crustle second because it’s able to set up all by itself, with no Baton Passing, in Shell Smash. Stone Edge is the main STAB here, and X-Scissor is a bit more accurate and a backup in case Stone Edge runs out of PP. Earthquake gives some coverage.
Expert Belt gets a little more damage in on super effectives to ensure they go down.

Galvantula @ Wide Lens

Thunder
Bug Buzz
Sticky Web
Energy Ball

Fallback Special attacker. Super accurate thunder, thanks to Lens and Eyes, is the main STAB here. Bug Buzz is good secondary STAB, and keeps it from being walled by Substitutes. Sticky Webs gives speed control so it has a better chance of going first the next turn and landing that Thunder. Energy Ball offers some coverage on Ground and Rock.
Wide Lens ups the accuracy of Thunder even more and makes it more consistent.

U-turn is the main move I use for M-Beedrill, good damage and keeps it out of the hot seat. Poison Jab is nice secondary STAB that destroys most Fairy and Grass types I’ve used it against. Pursuit lets Beedrill finish off enemies before they have a chance to switch out. Protect is used almost exclusively to safely MegaEvolve.
To be completely honest, I’m thinking of switching this one out for either M-Heracross or M-Pinsir, leaning towards M-Pinsir. I hardly ever use the thing. I never Baton Pass to it cause it’ll just U-Turn the buffs away, and More often than not Scizor sweeps, or near sweeps, my opponent.

My team’s lead. Protect gives a free speed boost every other turn or so. Substitute lets Scolipede put up more buffs before it gets low.
Iron defense buffs and Baton Pass into Volcarona and Galvantula, Swords dance buffs and passes into Scizor or Crustle. Baton pass for buff transfers.
I’ve considered switching Iron Defense for Megahorn, but it hasn’t posed a big problem as of yet.
Leftovers gives it some recovery to hopefully put up an additional buff.

Superpower for coverage, because it usually hits what BBite an BPunch can’t. Usually I’m able to have Scolipede Baton Pass a Sword Dance or two at Scizor, But i gave Scizor Sword Dance too in case I’m unable to.
Choice Band skyrockets attack, making it easier to depend on BPunch
Life Orb also helps out damage, though not as much, but doesn't lock Scizor.

Giga Drain/Roost (Currently Testing)
Quiver Dance

My prefered Special beater. Fire Blast is my main STAB move, nice and strong. Fiery Dance can raise Satk though.
Bug Buzz is another good STAB and it hits through Substitute.
Giga Drain offers great coverage and some manner of recovery. Roost can be used if I need straight recovery over coverage.
Quiver Dance makes Volcarona scarier, and I can usually get it off at least once if i can Baton Pass Scolipede’s Iron Defense.
Passho lets Volca survive a big hit from Water. Lum keeps it from being paralyzed or Poisoned.
The EV spread gives it more bulk to help it stick around.

A good replacement for Crustle.
Rapid Spin takes care of Hazards.
Knock off gets rid of pesky items and also hits Ghost well.
Stone Edge STAB for when big damage is needed
Aqua Jet gives priority and hits Rock well, which is super helpful on a Mono bug team like this.

Sticky Webs gives speed control so it has a better chance of going first the next turn and landing that Thunder.
Thunder Wave offers more speed control and can hit most things that Webs cannot.
Focus sash helps Galv get Webs out against a bad match up.

Earthquake/Close Combat (currently testing)

Sword Dance lets it buff and sweep against most things that don't resist M-Pinsir's STABs.
Quick Attack is priority STAB thanks to M-Pinsir's ability, which is always good to have.
Return/Frustration depends on your preference. I lean towards Return, cause I like to be buddy-buddy with my pokemon.
For the last slot, something to take care of Rock-Types. I'm leaning towards Close Combat, But Earthquake works too.

I'm also going to Test M-Hera in the Mega slot, for those Stats, check Twix's post farther down.

With compoundeyes, wide lens doesn't really have that much utility on Galvantula. I mean, it helps, but there are better options, especially considering energy ball and bug buzz have perfect accuracy. Consider focus sash to ensure that you get Web off. Also, thunder wave over Energy Ball gives Galvantula more general utility, and is another option to consider.

Since you are running shell smash, speed isn't essential, and Adamant nature would be better for Crustle.

You probably want some form of hazard control, as every team member besides scizor takes at least 25% from rocks.

I'd keep Beedril, as it gives you a source of power without needing to set up. Perhaps Xscissor over pursuit would make him easier to use. If you feel a switch coming, you can always uturn. There is definitely nothing wrong with mhera or mpinsir though.

Thanks a bunch! Lot's of good feedback to think on.

On Galvantula, I'd feel safer dropping webs for for Thunder Wave, but i can definitely see the arguement for dropping Energy ball.
I already have focus sash on Scolipede, so hows an Occa berry? Or switch it off Scolipede and give him the Occa?

For Crustle, as a matter of fact, the 4V dwebble I started with is Adamant, so that should be an easy fix.

I'll play with MBeedrill some more and see how it playes out with X-Scissors in place of Pursuit.

For hazards, all i can think of off hand is slapping Taunt on Scolipede, which I'm not sure it can even learn. Putting in Forretress could work, but it'd make my team rather weak to fire (I also wouldn't know what to drop. Maybe MBeedrill and have Scizor be the teams mega?). What do you suggest?

Hm..
If you're going to have 3 attacks in Galvantula, Life Orb or Expert Belt could be another good idea.
Well, if hazards haven't been giving you too much trouble, I wouldn't worry about it. If they did, you could always run Defog on Scizor.

As of now, rocks wrecks your team so I would throw in Armaldo over Scolipede or Crustle and use a set like

Armaldo @ Assault Vest
Ability: Battle Armor
Adamant Nature
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpDef
- Rapid Spin
- Knock Off
- Rock Blast / Rock Tomb / Rock Slide / Stone Edge
- Aqua Jet / X-Scissor

AV Armaldo gives bug a way to clear hazards and with assault vest and it's bulk let it spin rocks for the most part. Koff lets you remove items and rock stab helps with Charizard Y, Aqua Jet is priority and scissor is stab but since your a bug mono aqua jet is more likely better.

Scolipede, if you keep it and want to ever use the team in official mono games, should be running a lorb or band set with Megahorn / Earthquake / Rock Slide / Poison Jab as the moves, which helps a lot against fire monos. If you keep the baton passing set (which is banned in competitive since speed + other stat + baton pass is banned) you should use Substitute and Leftovers as a sub gives it slightly more longevity and lefties provides nice passive recovery (you might want to run a +def or +spdef nature since scolipede is already fast and protect + speed boost let it outspeed most things even without a speed boosting nature)

Both Scizor and Volcarona can run roost if they want too, and Volcarona can run fiery dance over fire blast and hp ground over bug buzz or giga drain since that helps with killing heatran which can lead to a sweep against mono steel teams. volcarona might also like lum berry to set up on more things or passho berry(?) to tank water attacks. Crustle also might like a lum but the set is good as is, so is scizor just maybe add roost.

Galv should be running sash to garuntee webs but if you want a more offensive set Thunder / Volt Switch / Bug Buzz / HP Ice or Giga Drain or Energy Ball works nicely with a scarf or specs.

Mega Bee is the "worst" of the bug megas but still really viable. It can run drill run over pursuit however, and if you choose a different mega then:

Pinsir @ Pinsirite
Ability: Moxie / Mold Breaker
Jolly Nature
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
- Swords Dance
- Frustration
- Feint / Quick Attack
- Close Combat / Earthquake

and

Herracross @ Herracrosite
Ability: Moxie
Jolly Nature
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
- Rock Blast
- Close Combat
- Bullet Seed
- Pin Missle / Swords Dance

Are the common sets, MPinsir is the "best" bug mega as it can easily sweep a tom of types after a sd, especially with webs up and MHera is really good under webs, yet doesnt help against dragon and flying as much as bug users really need it to. Personally I would go with MPinsir since its easy to use (sd then sweep!!!) just keep it away from status and its fine :p

Wow! Thanks a bunch for all the solid advice!
The Armando idea is great! I think I'll drop Crustle, cause repeat typing & I popped 3 6V venipedes on my last batch, so it'll be easier to train a second and have both Scolipede sets on hand.
I'll try roost out on both and see how it goes.

The Volcarona I'm using has HPdragon, same with Galvantula. Is that any good? Just asking cause I'd rather not grind for HiddenP if at all avoidable

I'll probably pick up MPinsir cause beedrill just isn't working for me. I dunno why, I guess it's just not as spectacular as I'd imagined.
Last thing, wouldn't return be better for MPinsir? It's friendship is bound to be high after 100 levels of grinding.

Thanks again for the tips!

Frustration is mainly for ditto, if they have max friendship then they dont do much damage but either way it wont matter since they will be clicking the priority most of the time, so return would be fine

Hp ice is the preferred hidden power since ice is extremely good offensively, and ground for volc is for sweeping steel teams since they rely on heatran as their main fire immunity, but if you can play around tran for volc sweeps (or just dont play vs it since your friends do no legends) then giga is fine on volc. As for galvantula the moves you have currently are fine if you dont want to run hp ice, just run sash if its your lead or lorb if you want more damage

Okay this is my second time rating this since I just clicked the X button but here goes:

First off, as noted by SMR, your Scolipede set is illegal due to the new baton pass clause, so I'd suggest making it an offensive variant with the moves Megahorn / Rock Slide / Earthquake / Protect. This offers your team a cleaner, as well as a really solid Pokemon against Fire-type teams and others.

Another major thing that needs to be fixed is that you should move the 4 HP EVs on every Pokemon to Defense. This allows your Pokemon to take less damage from Stealth Rock upon switch in, and allow them to switch in 5 times if they haven't been attacked as opposed to 4.

From this point, Crustle seems a bit irrelevant as you already have other cleaners on the team that honestly do the job better. As noted before by SMR, Armaldo would work well in its place and offers your team key entry hazard removal. In addition, Scizor should probably change from a Swords Dance set to a Choice Band set. This offers more immediate power, and can be effective against Rock Monotypes and the likes. You already have Scolipede, so I feel as that a Swords Dance set is unnecessary.

Furthermore, the item on Volcarona should be changed to a Passho Berry > Charti Berry, as even with Charti Berry you aren't living most STAB Rock-type moves. Passho Berry allows you to set up on Pokemon like Keldeo, and can be very effective late game. On the same token, Roost should be used over Giga Drain, as recovery can be really key in late-game situations, and Giga Drain isn't useful more often than not, and the spread should be changed to 72 HP / 252 SpA / 184 Spe to offer a bit more bulk. Also, as noted before, the item on Galvantula should be Focus Sash instead of Wise Lens to allow you to almost guarantee setting it up from full health.

Finally, I don't really support Mega Beedrill in your Mega slot. It's too frail to really do much in a game, and its Speed is partially unneeded on a Sticky Web based team. In its place, I would suggest Mega Heracross. The choice between Mega Pinsir and Mega Heracross was pretty simple, as although the former has access to strong priority and can clean easily, you really lack the full entry hazard removal support needed to utilize it. Mega Heracross is very effective under Sticky Web, and should turn out to be a really good option for your team.

For scizor he could make that an offensive defogger and for volc run Lum to prevent toxic or Thunder wave from stopping his late game sweeps. Otherwise, I agree with all of the suggestions they'll be extremely beneficial to the team. Especially adding a spinner thats always a must.

Alright, thanks! I'll keep the HP sets in mind if I ever do convert this to an official team. I'm sure there are ways to intentionally lower Friendship, So I'll look into those for better use of Frustration.
Thanks Again!

I understand my Scolipede is illegal. If i ever convert this to an official team (Which i probably will after I'm through with that friend I mentioned) I will definitely use an offensive set and move Galvantula to the lead position.

I hadn't realized 4 Defense EVs make that big of a difference. Thankfully I have a large pile of Reset bags sitting in my SuperTrainer, so that'll be a quick fix.

I do plan on dropping Crustle in favor of Armaldo. I'd completely forgotten Arma can learn Rapid Spin.

I'll switch Volcarona's berry. Earlier Today I met what i assume was an AV or Band Tyranitar, and it Stone Edged through my berry to OHKO Volc.
For the new spread, as i mentioned early I've got plenty of Reset Bags, so that shouldnt be a problem.
I decided Giga Drain over Roost for coverage rather than recovery, but now that it has a Passho, that may not be necessary.

For Galvantula, I already gave it my teams sash.

About my Mega slot, I will definitely try both M-Hera and M-Pinsir, but I feel the M-Pinsir set suggested by SMR will suit me better.
Also, wouldn't Arm Thrust be preferable to Close Combat because of M-Hera's ability?

Thanks for the critique!

I've been tossing around the idea of running DefogScizor, but i think Armaldo eliminates the need for it.

I see what you mean with Lum, I'll try it out some. If it ends up making a difference fairly often, then I'll keep it.
So much testing to do @.@

Thanks for the suggestions!

Speed boost
Jolly
252HP, 252Spd, 4Sdef

Technician
Adamant
252Atk, 252Spd, 4HP

Volcarona @ Charti Berry
Flame Body
Timid
252Satk, 252Spd, 4HP

Fire Blast
Bug Buzz

Sturdy
Jolly
252Atk, 252Spd, 4HP

X-Scissor
Stone Edge
Earthquake

Expert Belt gets a little more damage in on super effectives to ensure they go down.

galvantula.gif

Galvantula @ Wide Lens
Compound Eyes
Timid
252Satk, 252Spd, 4HP

Thunder
Bug Buzz
Sticky Web

Wide Lens ups the accuracy of Thunder even more and makes it more consistent.

beedrill-mega.gif

Beedrill @ Bedrillite
Swarm
Jolly
252Atk, 252Spd, 4HP

U-Turn
Poison Jab
Pursuit
Protect

You dont need special defense on ANY of these pokemon.

Ok first off change scolipedes movepool to an offensive one. Max attack with max speed with the moves: Protect, megahorn, earthquake, and rock slide.

Make that scizor Max HP and Max Attack.

Change the sp.d of volcarona to max speed and switch bug buzz for giga drain to deal with water types and water/ground types and switch the charti berry for a lum berry incase you get paralyzed.

If your running shell smash crustle which you are, switch the sp.d for max speed and use max attack as well

Switch the sp.d on galvantula to max speed.

And switch the sp.d on mega beedril to max speed and switch pursuit or drill run to deal with steel types and fire types like heatran
.

Hope you take these suggestions they will 100% improve your team.

He's just using the wrong shortened term. The sets on his Pokemon are max Speed not Max SpD

Arm Thrust does less damage than Close Combat, and can make a huge difference. Also, just trying out both Megas should work.

Twix has it. Sorry for the confusion.

Also, I understand my Scolipede is illegal. I will change it when I'm through beating up my friends team.

About M-Beedrill. I just updated the first post. I dropped it in favor of M-Pinsir (at least for now)

Alright. I just finished breeding Pinsir, and am about to start Hera now.

Thanks for explaining my blunder to Rhal, I corrected my mistake to avoid future misinterpretations. ;(
