Project Monotype Break This Team V2

banner by Zarif // approved by Eien

co-led with Decemm // previously led by The Excadrill

Hello everyone! Break This Team is coming back yet again for USM, this time hosted by myself and Decemm. Break My Team is a project where we will take a common team or archetype and figure out the many interesting cores that can beat it! Players submit a core that beats a given team and the community votes on the winner for each cycle. Since this is a Monotype project, I'd like to emphasize one rule: you cannot submit a core that has a type advantage against the given type. A Fighting core that can beat a Normal team will not be accepted. However, submitting a Grass core that can beat a Dragon team is very welcome and encouraged. For this rendition of the project, we will often do Monotype OMs to allow for more creative submissions.
Rules:
  • You should submit a core of no more than 2 or 3 Pokemon that share a type.
  • Cores must have a brief description of how they work and how they work to beat the submitted team.
  • You are allowed to submit a core of the same type as someone else. However, identical or very similar cores will not be accepted. The first submitter takes priority in a case like this. Be original!
  • Do not use this thread to suggest a team or type that should be in the next cycle. You are more than free to PM me about this, though.
  • Similarly, if you feel like there should be a type not allowed for a cycle, PM me as well rather than posting here.

(found that when I looked up "water monotype" on google lol, credit to the original creator)

Toxapex @ Black Sludge
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 192 Def / 64 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Scald
- Haze/Baneful Bunker
- Recover
- Toxic Spikes

Suicune @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 HP / 24 SpD / 232 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Scald
- Substitute
- Calm Mind
- Protect

Keldeo-Resolute @ Choice Specs
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Scald
- Secret Sword
- Hydro Pump
- Icy Wind

This core performs phenomenally vs. Normal Monotype teams. Normal really struggles against Vincune with the T-Spikes support, and on top of that Keldeo has a field day vs. the entire team. Baneful Bunker on Toxapex is better vs. Diggersby normal teams, but Haze is better to check P-Z.

Rock Core

Shuckle @ Mental Herb
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Impish Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Sticky Web
- Knock Off
- Encore

Terrakion @ Rockium Z
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stone Edge
- Close Combat
- Swords Dance
- Rock Polish

Rhyperior @ Weakness Policy
Ability: Solid Rock
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature
- Roar
- Earthquake
- Fire Punch
- Ice Punch

This Rock core does a pretty solid job of breaking through the team. Starting with Shuckle, it's essential for setting up Sticky Web to let Terrakion outspeed Mega Lopunny. It can also Encore stuff to let Terrakion in safely to get up a Substitute. Terrakion is definitely the prime wincon under Sticky Web, and once it gets up a Substitute, Ditto can't copy it and attempt to reverse sweep. It can get up a Substitute through forcing out the entire defensive core, and if it's somehow able to get up a Substitute AND a Swords Dance, it just straight wins.

+2 252 Atk Terrakion Close Combat vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Chansey: 1034-1218 (147 - 173.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+2 252 Atk Terrakion Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Porygon2: 402-474 (107.4 - 126.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+1 252 Atk Terrakion Stone Edge vs. 240 HP / 252+ Def Staraptor: 440-518 (118.5 - 139.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Terrakion Continental Crush (180 BP) vs. +1 0 HP / 0 Def Porygon-Z: 262-309 (84.2 - 99.3%) -- 75% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock(just in case it's able to get off a Z-Conversion with Sticky Web still up)
Mega Lopunny and Ditto should go without saying

Rhyperior is mainly a plan B in case something goes wrong, like Ditto copying Terrakion or Sticky Web not being up, making Mega Lopunny a bigger problem. With Earthquake and Weakness Policy, Rhyperior can beat both of these threats, and also has Roar to make sure Porygon-Z doesn't set up safely in front of it:

252 Atk Lopunny-Mega High Jump Kick vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Solid Rock Rhyperior: 198-234 (45.6 - 53.9%) -- 1.2% chance to 2HKO
+2 4 Atk Rhyperior Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Lopunny-Mega: 304-358 (112.1 - 132.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+2 252 Atk Terrakion Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Solid Rock Rhyperior: 351-414 (80.8 - 95.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Tyranitar @ Leftovers

Sableye-Mega @ Sablenite
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 248 HP / 112 Def / 148 SpD
Careful Nature
- Will-O-Wisp
- Knock Off
- Protect
- Recover

This core is effective against normal as 5/6 Pokemon can't really beat mega Sableye reliably. Bulky Tyranitar with leftovers can consistently switch in to Porygon-z and pursuit trap it, aswell as being able to set rocks on it fairly easily. Mandibuzz is a reliable check to Mega Lopunny as playing the core well should prevent the opponent ever getting rocks up to secure a 2hko on you on switch in, since chansey will never touch mega sableye.

Victini @ Choice Band
Ability: Victory Star
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

Sherri (Meloetta) @ Leftovers
Ability: Serene Grace
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Toxic
- Knock Off
- U-turn
- Psychic
The main player of this core is obviously Band Victini as it can plow through ALL of Normal's usual defensive options with a fearsome V-create. Slowbro can be haphazardly tossed against Lopunny-mega's Return and Meloetta serves as a niche counter to Z-Conversion Porygon-Z and Porygon2, while offering a bit of utility with Knock Off and Toxic or by giving the player a counterplay against the opponent switching with an aptly timed U-turn. A bit of aggressive, but appropriate playmaking is required mid-game to make best use of Victini, such as immediately doubling to Victini, predicting them to also switch, after you send out Slowbro to counter Lopunny-mega in order to nab another kill.

Outside of the odd Latias spread, this core is very standard for bulkier Dragon teams, and breaks most Flying teams with ease. Garchomp is the Stealth Rock setter with Toxic to timer bulkier walls like Zapdos and Mantine. LO Kyurem-Black is a staple, with powerful BoltBeam coverage that no Flying type can effectively switch into. Mega Latias is used as a bulky pivot and late game sweeper that acts as an answer to Mega Aerodactyl, and has Refresh to act as a cleric for Toxic users like Gliscor. While CM/SP usually acts as a setup sweeper, you can alternatively replace SP and Refresh for BoltBeam to act as a better, more offensive presence that beats down Flying outright.

252 SpA Life Orb Teravolt Kyurem-Black Ice Beam vs. 244 HP / 252 SpD Gliscor: 686-811 (194.8 - 230.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

This Rock core does a pretty good job of breaking through the team. Starting with Terrakion, only Mega Aerodactyl outspeeds it on the team, and it's able to find its opportunity to set up a Swords Dance through forcing out Zapdos or Mantine, and at +2 nothing is safe from a Continental Crush. Additionally, it also has the bulk to survive a hit from a few specific threats:

+2 252 Atk Terrakion Continental Crush (180 BP) vs. 244 HP / 20 Def Gliscor: 474-558 (134.6 - 158.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Poison Heal
252 Atk Terrakion Stone Edge vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Mantine: 438-516 (117.4 - 138.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Terrakion Stone Edge vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Zapdos: 372-440 (96.8 - 114.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
+2 252 Atk Terrakion Continental Crush (180 BP) vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Celesteela: 412-486 (103.7 - 122.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Leftovers recovery
+2 252 Atk Terrakion Stone Edge vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Multiscale Dragonite: 339-400 (104.9 - 123.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+2 252 Atk Terrakion Close Combat vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Aerodactyl-Mega: 447-526 (148.5 - 174.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Terrakion taking hits:
252 Atk Aerodactyl-Mega Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Terrakion: 246-290 (76.1 - 89.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
0 Atk Gliscor Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Terrakion: 224-266 (69.3 - 82.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
0 Atk Celesteela Heavy Slam (80 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Terrakion: 192-228 (59.4 - 70.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

As for Nihilego, with a Choice Scarf it outspeeds the entire team and can severely dent the team with Power Gem+Hidden Power Ice. The exception to this being Celesteela, which can either be severely damaged by Thunderbolt or trapped by Alolan Golem:

252 SpA Nihilego Hidden Power Ice vs. 244 HP / 172+ SpD Gliscor: 244-288 (69.3 - 81.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Poison Heal
252 SpA Nihilego Power Gem vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Aerodactyl-Mega: 270-318 (89.7 - 105.6%) -- 31.3% chance to OHKO
+1 252 SpA Nihilego Power Gem vs. 248 HP / 164+ SpD Mantine: 234-276 (62.7 - 73.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Nihilego Power Gem vs. 248 HP / 180+ SpD Zapdos: 212-252 (55.3 - 65.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Nihilego Power Gem vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Dragonite: 258-306 (79.8 - 94.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock
252 SpA Nihilego Thunderbolt vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Celesteela: 192-226 (48.3 - 56.9%) -- 37.1% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Alolan Golem's main purpose in this matchup is trapping and removing Celesteela, and thanks to its solid physical bulk, it can come directly in on a Heavy Slam. It also makes sure Dragonite can't set up all over it with Stone Edge:

252 Atk Expert Belt Golem-Alola Wild Charge vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Celesteela: 238-281 (59.9 - 70.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Expert Belt Golem-Alola Stone Edge vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Multiscale Dragonite: 194-230 (60 - 71.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
0 Atk Celesteela Heavy Slam (80 BP) vs. 20 HP / 0 Def Golem-Alola: 70-84 (22.8 - 27.4%) -- 56.6% chance to 4HKO

Normal core of Chansey, Porygon2, and Porygon-Z

Ok here we go, will add more if I see mistakes

Chansey @ Eviolite
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Soft-Boiled
- Seismic Toss
- Stealth Rock
- Heal Bell

Porygon2 @ Eviolite
Ability: Trace
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpA / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Toxic
- Ice Beam
- Recover
- Foul Play

Porygon-Z @ Normalium Z
Ability: Adaptability
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Thunderbolt
- Ice Beam
- Recover
- Conversion

This core essentially uses the eviolite duo to stop damage from coming in on Porygon-Z who sweeps the entire team after a Z-conversion.

Chansey - Chansey is the status sponge and semi-cleric of the team. While there are no dedicated special attackers on this team that would require Chansey to stop them, Chansey still works as a status sponge and cleric for the rest of the team. Natural Cure allows chansey to leave the fight and be status-free from the likes of Gliscor's toxic and allows Porygon-2 to switch into it freely. Most of the set is self explanatory, as stealth rock is immensely useful in this MU for the damage and pressure it puts on the team as well as breaking Multiscale on Dragonite. Seismic toss is used to not be complete taunt bait for Gliscor and can pressure switch ins on the team. Soft-boiled is used to recover lost health since Chansey isn't invincible, but there is a different move on here this time in the form of Heal Bell. This may look questionable at first, but this core does not really need Thunder Wave to beat this team as Mega-Aero isn't really threatening anyone besides porygonZ. So in order to ease the pressure off of its teammates, chansey runs heal bell to get rid of toxic and burns so that Porygon2 and Z are not sentenced to death if they gets hit with status.

Porygon2 - Porygon2 is the star of this core, as it takes all physical attacks extremely well. Thanks to the lack of knock off on this team, Porygon2 can come in directly to most attacks and hit back with Ice Beam for the attackers or toxic for the walls bar celesteela. I used trace over download because Trace allows you to take Gliscor's toxic heal, thereby hindering it from wanting to toxic P2 and allowing P2 to come in safely against it and continue to use Ice Beam to 2HKO it in return. Much like chansey, most of the set is familiar and there are no really out there moves this time around. Ice beam is used for the reason previously mentioned as well as threatening all the physical attackers on this team. Toxic is used to stop Mantine and Zapdos from stalling out the match, Recover is obvious, and Foul Play is used to stop Dragonite in its tracks as P2 can come in on a +1 Z-move and proceed to take anything else it has to offer afterwards and recover off of it. The calcs will be shown later on.

PorygonZ - PorygonZ is a big threat to flying especially with Electric Z-conversion. PoryZ has plenty of opportunities to set up as chansey or porygon2 can force out certain threats like mantine or dragonite. Once a good oppurtunity is given, PorygonZ can set up and countinue to blast through the team with boltbeam coverage and extra longevity with recover, which allows it to come in against Celesteela even with rocks down and proceed to setup. Even without Z-conversion Porygon-Z still puts in work against the flying team as its SpA isn't that shabby, so it can afford to switch out if the situation calls for it just note that Mega-aerodactyl can now outspeed you.

Blue means defense
Red means attack
Chansey calcs: No need just know that dragonite kills you lol

Porygon2 calcs:
+1 252 Atk Dragonite Devastating Drake (190 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Porygon2: 246-289 (65.7 - 77.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
* So unfortunately this does not allow porygon2 to switch into the attack, but the fact that it lives is important as that means that you can proceed to OHKO dragonite with Ice Beam after rocks are down if dragonite sets up in front of P2 otherwise something will likely get sacked or the entire team dies.
+1 252 Atk Dragonite Outrage vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Porygon2: 154-183 (41.1 - 48.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

+1 252 Atk Dragonite Fire Punch vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Porygon2: 65-77 (17.3 - 20.5%) -- possible 5HKO
+1 252 Atk Dragonite Extreme Speed vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Porygon2: 69-82 (18.4 - 21.9%) -- possible 5HKO
* If you end up sacking Chansey or something against the Z-move this still allows P2 to come in safely against any of dragonite's attacks and still does very well vs the rest of flying. The only problem being it now takes toxic damage and can't stop it unless you take Gliscor's Poison Heal.

0 SpA Porygon2 Ice Beam vs. 244 HP / 172+ SpD Gliscor: 256-304 (72.7 - 86.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Poison Heal
* So because of the SpD investment, Pory2 does not OHKO Gliscor with Ice Beam, but because of trace this shouldn't be too much of a problem.

252 Atk Aerodactyl-Mega Stone Edge vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Porygon2: 87-103 (23.2 - 27.5%) -- 72.5% chance to 4HKO
252 Atk Aerodactyl-Mega Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Porygon2: 58-69 (15.5 - 18.4%) -- possible 6HKO
* This boi does nothing to P2, and Ice beam forces it out or straight up 2HKO's it after rocks.

0 SpA Porygon2 Ice Beam vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Aerodactyl-Mega: 140-166 (46.5 - 55.1%) -- 65.2% chance to 2HKO
* Not a guranteed 2HKO, but its good enough to force it out into celesteela.

PorygonZ calcs:
I'll do normal and Z-converted calcs just for reference.
Z-coversion calcs:
VS. Zapdos
+1 252 SpA Porygon-Z Ice Beam vs. 248 HP / 180+ SpD Zapdos: 248-294 (64.7 - 76.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
*Thunderbolt does the same damage btw
VS. Mantine
Mantine said it didn't want me to share so just imagine how much an adaptability +1 thunderbolt does to it instead.
*Look out for haze though
VS. Dragonite
+1 252 SpA Porygon-Z Ice Beam vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Multiscale Dragonite: 302-356 (93.4 - 110.2%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO

+1 252 Atk Dragonite Extreme Speed vs. +1 0 HP / 0 Def Porygon-Z: 120-142 (38.5 - 45.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
*Now that is some power, watch out for that Espeed though if you are low.
VS. Celesteela
+1 252 SpA Adaptability Porygon-Z Thunderbolt vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Celesteela: 596-704 (150.1 - 177.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO
*This also allows you to survive heavy slam really well because of electric resisting steel so yeah, cele is a goner.
VS. Mega-Aerodactyl
+1 252 SpA Porygon-Z Ice Beam vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Aerodactyl-Mega: 316-372 (104.9 - 123.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+1 252 SpA Adaptability Porygon-Z Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Aerodactyl-Mega: 632-744 (209.9 - 247.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
VS. Gliscor
+1 252 SpA Porygon-Z Ice Beam vs. 244 HP / 172+ SpD Gliscor: 568-672 (161.3 - 190.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO
*Dead boi

Normal calcs:
VS. Zapdos
252 SpA Porygon-Z Ice Beam vs. 248 HP / 180+ SpD Zapdos: 168-198 (43.8 - 51.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
*Not very good, you will likely get stalled out unless you get a freeze. You also wouldn't setup on it because of discharge para chance.
VS. Mantine
252 SpA Porygon-Z Thunderbolt vs. 248 HP / 164+ SpD Mantine: 248-292 (66.4 - 78.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
*Decent fake out with haze
VS. Dragonite
How about don't
VS. Celesteela
252 SpA Porygon-Z Thunderbolt vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Celesteela: 200-236 (50.3 - 59.4%) -- 79.3% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
*leech seed makes it a 3HKO this is only if you manage to chip it to around half which will likely never happen.

0 Atk Celesteela Heavy Slam (120 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Porygon-Z: 175-207 (56.2 - 66.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
*This is very important if you try to setup in front of Celesteela but remember:
0 Atk Celesteela Heavy Slam (120 BP) vs. +1 0 HP / 0 Def Porygon-Z: 58-69 (18.6 - 22.1%) -- possible 5HKO
*So this will actually work 100% of the time just remember to recover so that Dragonite doesn't revenge kill you.

VS. Mega-Aerodactyl
252 SpA Porygon-Z Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Aerodactyl-Mega: 210-248 (69.7 - 82.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Porygon-Z Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Aerodactyl-Mega: 210-248 (69.7 - 82.3%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
*Same damage for either move

252 Atk Aerodactyl-Mega Stone Edge vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Porygon-Z: 226-267 (72.6 - 85.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
*If it hits, but still not worth getting a measly 2HKO for.

VS. Gliscor
252 SpA Porygon-Z Ice Beam vs. 244 HP / 172+ SpD Gliscor: 384-452 (109 - 128.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

bruxish has no switchins on this team, and the only mon that outspeeds it gets bopped by priority. however, needs rocks to be able to 2hko celesteela, which is why pert exists. kabutops also has 0 switchins on the team, and the only mon that outspeeds it gets bopped by priority. however, needs rocks to be able to 2hko celesteela, which is why pert exists. z-refresh pert is a sicc tecc that lets it lure the opponent into toxicing with their mantine or zapdos while pert toxics them back, and then finnesse the opp real good by going from 0 to 100 real fast (like a sportscar xD).
