[Monotype/Normal] Pidgeot [QC 3/3] [GP 2/2] [Written]

**Normal**:

Mega Pidgeot is an excellent Pokemon on Normal teams, chiefly for its ability to decimate Fighting teams with its STAB Hurricane. With its great base 121 Speed, it outruns not only every Fighting-type bar Mega Lopunny but also most of the unboosted metagame, as well as slower Choice Scarf users like Magnezone. It ties with Porygon-Z for having the highest Special Attack of all Normal-type Pokemon, so it can dish out a lot of damage. No Guard allows Mega Pidgeot to throw around perfectly accurate Hurricanes. There are no Pokemon that are immune to Flying-type moves, and the move also has a nice 30% chance to confuse the foe, which could bail Mega Pidgeot out of a tight spot.

However, despite Mega Pidgeot having two immunities, its bulk is average at best, so it has a hard time switching in. Its special movepool is also woefully shallow, making it rather predictable. In addition, No Guard means opposing Stone Edge, Hydro Pump, and Thunder will always hit.

Moves
========

Hurricane is boosted by STAB and does good damage to anything that doesn't resist it or isn't a special wall. It also has a 30% chance to confuse the foe. Heat Wave hits the Steel-types that resist Hurricane super effectively. It OHKOes Bisharp and Mega Scizor, both of which are threats to Normal teams. Roost provides reliable recovery so that Mega Pidgeot can spam Hurricane for longer. Hidden Power Ground 2HKOes specially defensive Heatran, which would otherwise wall this set completely. Defog can be used to clear the field of entry hazards. However, it should not be used without Roost, as Mega Pidgeot will then find it harder to Defog throughout the match. U-turn allows Mega Pidgeot to scout switch-ins and grab momentum.

Set Details
========

The EVs maximize Speed to make the most of Mega Pidgeot's excellent Speed tier and maximize Special Attack to let it hit as hard as possible. As Mega Pidgeot isn't bulky, there is little point investing in bulk. Big Pecks is the least situational of Pidgeot's pre-Mega abilities. However, if you're running Defog, use Keen Eye instead, as Big Pecks is incompatible with Defog. Since Mega Pidgeot will be Mega Evolving as soon as possible anyway, the ability choice is largely immaterial, as No Guard overrides it anyway.

Usage Tips
========

Mega Evolve Pidgeot as soon as possible so it can take advantage of the new Speed and power as soon as it can. The extra Speed in particular lets it outrun Keldeo and Mega Gallade. More often than not, throwing around Hurricane is your best bet, as even Pokemon that resist the move have a 30% chance to be confused. Mega Pidgeot can't take hits very well, so when possible, bring it in after a revenge kill or through a slow U-turn.

If running Roost, using it whenever a free turn presents itself is recommended to keep Mega Pidgeot's health up, allowing it to spam Hurricane for longer. Against Fighting teams, Mega Pidgeot should be brought in safely as often as possible, as it can 2HKO at worst every Fighting-type and naturally outruns all Pokemon on a Fighting team. U-turn can help Pidgeot Mega Evolve safely, as well as scout switch-ins.

This set can perform a number of roles—it can be an early- to mid-game wallbreaker, a late-game cleaner, and a revenge killer due to its high Speed. Mega Pidgeot struggles to beat Stealth Rock setters like Empoleon and Heatran, so finding opportunities to use Defog can be difficult. On the other hand, though, the threat of a perfectly accurate Hurricane can force switches that Mega Pidgeot can take advantage of to use Defog. Mega Pidgeot can use U-turn to pivot out of Pokemon that would otherwise wall it like Zapdos and defensive Heatran (the latter can be 2HKOed with Hidden Power Ground, however).

Team Options
========

As Mega Pidgeot struggles against Rock and Electric teams, Diggersby is a great teammate, as it can easily threaten those teams and is the best physical wallbreaker Normal has. The two can form a dual wallbreaking core, removing each other's checks. Chansey and Porygon2 can wall most of the Electric-types Mega Pidgeot struggles with. Chansey can also set up Stealth Rock to help Pidgeot get more KOs. Their presence on your team also lets Mega Pidgeot fire off powerful attacks and then pivot out to safety. Both can also spread Thunder Wave and Toxic to help Mega Pidgeot outrun otherwise faster foes and cripple walls it can't touch, respectively. Staraptor can remove the dreaded Stealth Rock with Defog, freeing up the moveslot for Mega Pidgeot. It can also bring it in safely with a relatively slow U-turn. Mega Pidgeot can work well with other U-turn and Volt Switch users like Diggersby and Heliolisk. They can both also switch in on the Electric-type moves it draws in. Meloetta can wallbreak alongside Mega Pidgeot while also soft checking Fighting-types.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

**Normal**:

Work Up can be used to boost Mega Pidgeot's Special Attack, although it struggles finding time to set up. Toxic can cripple Pokemon like Zapdos that otherwise wall Mega Pidgeot, but the coverage of Hidden Power Ground and the utility of Defog, Roost, and U-turn make them superior options. Tailwind could be used as a last-ditch move to help Mega Pidgeot's teammates. However, Mega Pidgeot just doesn't have the space for the move and aside from Diggersby, there aren't that many Pokemon on a Normal team that would benefit from it. Hyper Beam can be used as a last resort to take out troublesome Electric-types, but it leaves Mega Pidgeot wide open to revenge killing or being set up on. Substitute can be run as a buffer against revenge killers; however, with Mega Pidgeot's Stealth Rock weakness and lack of Leftovers, it can find itself worn down very quickly when using the move.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Normal**:

**Heatran**: Defensive Heatran completely walls non-Hidden Power Ground Mega Pidgeot, and it can 2HKO Mega Pidgeot with Lava Plume, set up Stealth Rock in its face, or cripple it with Toxic.

**Electric-types**: Most Electric-type Pokemon can easily take a Hurricane and OHKO Mega Pidgeot back with their STAB moves. Rotom-W and Zapdos wall it completely, and Mega Manectric outruns it and OHKOes with Thunderbolt.

**Rock-types**: Mega Pidgeot can't touch most Rock-types, notably Tyranitar and Mega Diancie, as they resist Hurricane and Heat Wave and can OHKO it with a Rock-type STAB move.

**Revenge Killers**: Strong priority users like Choice Band Dragonite, Choice Band Scizor, and Life Orb Mamoswine can revenge kill Mega Pidgeot after it has taken prior damage. Choice Scarf users that can hit Mega Pidgeot super effectively like Terrakion can also reliably revenge kill it.

**Special Walls**: Special walls like Chansey, Porygon2, and Gastrodon can wall Mega Pidgeot and stall it out with Toxic. Chansey doesn't even care about Toxic from it due to Natural Cure.

**Stealth Rock**: Stealth Rock reduces Mega Pidgeot's HP by 25% each time it comes in, making it far easier to revenge kill.

This is a nice start. Comments in bold. I want to look over it again after you implement this stuff and then I'll stamp it.
[OVERVIEW]
  • Great base 121 Speed lets Mega Pidgeot outrun most of the unboosted metagame, as well as slower Choice Scarf users like Tyrantitar
  • 135 base Special Attack let it hit extremely hard - it ties with Porygon-Z for highest Special Attack of all Normal-types
  • No Guard gives its STAB Hurricane perfect accuracy, making it very spammable
  • A good soft check to Mono Fighting teams, as it can outrun all Fighting-types and 2HKO at worst every Fighting-type with Hurricane
  • Average bulk at best
  • Shallow special movepool
  • No Guard also means opposing Stone Edges, Hydro Pumps and Thunders will also hit
– Scarf Ttar is irrelevant in Mono and Pidgeot can't hit it for significant damage. It certainly shouldn't be listed in the first sentence.
– Use the first sentence or two to clearly state m-pidge's primary role on Normal teams. It is an excellent offensive check to Fighting teams and a fast wallbreaker with its high SpA and STAB Hurricane.

[SET]
name: Storm Bringer (Special Attacker)
move 1: Hurricane
move 2: Heat Wave
move 3: Roost
move 4: U-turn / Work Up / Defog
item: Pidgeotite
ability: Big Pecks / Keen Eye
nature: Timid
evs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

I'm sure there is going to be some discussion on how we want this set to look.

– Work Up isn't relevant in Monotype. It is my understanding it was used to Stall break in UU when paired with Refresh and Roost. I think it is something for OO.
– There are 2 sets that are worth highlighting here. They're probably not different enough to actually warrant being listed separately, so just cover everything here using slashes. Hurricane and Heat Wave are a given on each set.

– The 1st set of slashes should be Roost + Defog in the 3rd and 4th slots.
– This lets Pidgeot fulfill a support role for the team while still threatening w/ Hurricane. It is used on teams without Staraptor.
– The 2nd set of slashes should be an offensive set.
– HP Ground should go in the 3rd slot as a way to hit Heatran.
– The final slot should go to a move to support the team since it has pitiful attacking coverage.
– Toxic lets you put status on common switch ins, like Zapdos or Ttar.
– U-turn for momentum
– Tailwind is worth a mention because it can turn Diggersby into a monster in the late game.
– Teams that don't need Pidgeot to hit Heatran can replace HP Ground with one of these other moves.
Thus the set looks like this:

name: Storm Bringer (Special Attacker)
move 1: Hurricane
move 2: Heat Wave
move 3: Roost / HP Ground
move 4: Defog / Toxic / U-turn
item: Pidgeotite
ability: No Guard
nature: Timid
evs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

  • Hurricane is Pidgeot's STAB, and is very spammable thanks to No Guard
  • Heat Wave hits the Steel-types that resist Hurricane Super Effectively. It OHKOes Bisharp that don't invest in bulk
  • Roost provides reliable recovery, so Pidgeot can spam Hurricanes for longer
  • U-turn lets Pidgeot escape bad match ups like Tyranitar, and lets it gain momentum. Work Up can be used to boost and sweep late game. After a boost or two, Pidgeot hits incredibly hard. Defog can be used if your team has no other form of hazard control.
This is really sparse. Update it according to the stuff above.

Set Details
========

  • The EVs are very straightforward, simply maximising Speed to make the most of that excellent Speed tier, and Special Attack to hit as hard as possible
  • As Mega Pidgeot isn't bulky, there is little point investing in defenses
  • Big Pecks is the least situational of Pidgeot's pre mega abilities. However, if you're running Work Up or Defog use Keen Eye instead, as Big Pecks is illegal with those moves. Since you'll be Mega Evolving as soon as possible anyway, the ability choice is largely immaterial
mention no guard here

Usage Tips
========
  • Mega Evolve as soon as possible, so you can take advantage of the new Speed and power as soon as you can
  • More often than not, throwing around Hurricane is your best bet. Even Pokémon who resist the move have a 30% chance to be confused
  • Mega Pidgeot can't take hits very well, so when possible bring it in after a revenge kill or slow U-turn
This is exceptionally sparse. You should mention things like:

If running U-turn, that can help it m-evo safely. Give a special mention to prioritizing your m-evo against Fighting teams b/c it needs to outspeed mons like Keldeo and Mega-Gallade ASAP.
Talk about how it can serve as both a wall breaker in the early game and as a sweeper in the late game.
This makes for a great revenge killer with its high base speed.
Mention how it struggles to beat common SR setters, such as Empoleon, Heatran, and Ttar, so it can struggle to find opportunities to Defog
However, it can use the offensive pressure it places on other teams to generate opportunities to Defog.
Talk about using U-turn or Toxic to play around common counters, like Zapdos, Rotom-W, and Ttar.

Team Options

========

  • As this set struggles against Mono Rock and Mono Electric teams, Diggersby is a solid teammate as it can dent many of them with STAB Earthquake
  • Staraptor can also help out, as it can lure in Rock- and Steel-types like Tyranitar and Heatran and badly injure them with Close Combat
  • Assault Vest Snorlax can wall many of the Electric-types that trouble Pidgeot, and KO them with Earthquake
  • Smeargle can set up entry hazards to help Pidgeot deal more damage
  • Chansey can also wall most special Electric-types, and heal Pidgeot with Wish and Heal Bell
Diggersby will almost never click EQ vs. Electric teams. 4/6 members are part Flying or have Levitate. Return nukes everything bar Magnezone. Also mention how Diggersby+Pidgeot make a great wall breaking combination.

Staraptor is primarily used as a bulky support mon on Normal teams. It is the type's best option for hazard control. It also makes a good teammate because it can clear hazards for pidgeot.

You need to mention the eviolite core as good partners. These allow Pidgeot to function as a hit and run attacker.

Chansey doesn't really run wish in Monotype. It may run heal bell, but that is typically outclassed by a status move. Instead, chansey provides stealth rock support for Pidgeot. It can also status opposing 'mons. Toxic to wear down opposing walls or t-wave to slow down the 'mons that outspeed Pidgeot.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

  • Hidden Power Ground 2HKOes specially defensive Heatran and most Raikou after Stealth Rock
  • A Mono-Attacker set consisting of Work Up, Hurricane, Roost and Refresh can be run, but stall is not an effective strategy in Monotype so such a set isn't very effective
  • Hyper Beam can be used as a last resort to take out troublesome Electric-types, but leaves Pidgeot wide open to revenge killing or being set up on
  • Tailwind is another move you can use to help Pidgeot's team if it's about to faint regardless
move tailwind and HP Ground to the moves section. Some people like to run sub on this, so it is probably worth a mention in OO.

Checks and Counters
===================
**Electric-Types** Most Electric-type Pokémon can easily take a Hurricane and OHKO Pidgoet back with their STABs

**Rock-Types** Pidgeot can't touch most Rock-types, as they resist Hurricane and Heat Wave and can OHKO with Stone Edge. Tyranitar and Mega Diancie are the more notable ones

**Heatran** Heatran resists Hurricane and is immune to Heat Wave thanks to Flash Fire. It can then force Pidgeot out, cripple it with Toxic or just smash it with Magma Storm or Fire Blast

Stealth Rock is a major weakness

Strong priority attacks, such as Mamoswine's Ice Shard, Breloom's Mach Punch, Medicham's Fake Out + Bullet Punch, or Banded Dnite's Espeed, can KO with a bit of prior damage.

Every relevant scarf user in Monotype, sans Magnezone, outspeeds and Pidgeot struggles to eat a hit

Special walls, such as chansey or mew, can eat a hit and recover stall Pidgeot. It relies on confusion to win 1v1.

Looks good. Implement these and it is QC 1/3

Team Options is still a bit sparse imo.
Add the bit about the combination of P2 and Chansey allowing Mega-Pidgeot to hit and run (or just defog and pivot out). If you think it is better served in UT that is fine, but it is part of what makes this thing so threatening.
Also, put Staraptor back into the list. Defog support is crucial for Pidgeot sets that don't run it and many (~60-70%) don't.
Mention how this can form a nice VoltTurn core with 'mons like Diggersby, Meloetta, Heliolisk, and (Offensive) Staraptor.

For Checks and Counters
Add scarfers to the bit on revenge killers
Put strong special walls, like Chansey, Gastrodon or Mew. They are bulky enough to eat a Hurricane, recover, then threaten with status.

Overview:
I think in the overview, its typing should definitely be mentioned in some way. Flying is a pretty poor defensive typing because it makes Mega Pidgeot weak to Stealth Rock and common Electric-, Ice-, or Rock-type coverage moves.

To avoid having the overview be overly negative, its status as a special wallbreaker could be mentioned? Its access to Defog is quite nice too.

Moves:
I think it would be nice if the Roost + Defog vs. Hidden Power Ground + U-turn / Toxic could be more distinguished. This is probably a job for when you're writing this up, but it should be made pretty clear that this is the pairing we would like it to have. While it's okay not to run Hidden Power Ground or Defog and opt for a Roost + U-turn, Defog should not be used without Roost and that is an important note I think that should be here.

It's unnecessary to say Bisharp without bulk, as almost no Bisharp will ever be bulky. Just saying that it OHKOes Bisharp is fine. I would probably also add Mega Scizor here as well, as it is a huge threat to Normal in general. Even a defensive Mega Scizor cannot survive a Heat Wave.

While it is true that Hidden Power Ground hits Magnezone for more damage than Heat Wave can, its main use is to hit Heatran. I would make it clear that Heatran walls sets that lack Hidden Power Ground and can either threaten it with Lava Plume or simply safely set up Stealth Rock on it. Magnezone is pretty iffy anyway, as Sturdy prevents OHKOes at max health and bulky Magnezone are pretty common.

Toxic can cripple checks, but you lose the momentum that Mega Pidgeot can normally get with U-turn. Both of your examples are targets that Mega Pidgeot can U-turn into a suitable check for, anyway. I think it's important to explain why U-turn is preferred to Toxic. The utility from U-turn tends to outweigh Toxic, but of course Toxic isn't completely inferior.

It should be explained why Tailwind is a pretty poor move here. While certainly Diggersby will become almost unstoppable, it's very difficult to actually pull this strategy off. Further, most of the Normal team doesn't take advantage of Tailwind in any particularly good fashion, so it's a generally useless move through most of the battle. As the cost is the momentum of U-turn or the utility of Toxic, I think you should at least note in some way that this move is suboptimal.

Usage Tips:
One thing is Roost usage. Mega Pidgeot should look to keep its health topped up so that it can reliably Defog entry hazards.

I would probably add something about its role against Fighting teams, as that is one of its most important jobs. Bring Mega Pidgeot in as often as possible to get KOs with Hurricane, as not much can actually switch into it safely. Terrakion is probably the only Pokemon that can take a hit, because Cobalion will be outsped for the 2HKO, but it fears the confusion chance.

Team Options:
The primary reason Diggersby is such a good partner isn't just because it can handle Electric- and Rock-type foes. It's the best physical wallbreaker for Normal. It pairs extremely well with Mega Pidgeot, as they can easily take out checks for each other.

Chansey and Porygon2 spread status very well and that is a huge help for Mega Pidgeot. Paralysis can help it beat faster foes and Toxic poison will wear down walls it cannot touch.

Staraptor's Defog notably frees Mega Pidgeot to take on a more offensive role with Hidden Power Ground to beat Heatran and perhaps U-turn to provide great momentum. Further, it's a great switch-in to physical attackers, thanks to Intimidate and its decent physical bulk.

Speaking of Staraptor, I'd include it for the U-turn section, as Staraptor's quite slow U-turn can help safely bring Mega Pidgeot into play.

I would consider including Meloetta as a nice teammate. Meloetta + Mega Pidgeot can put a lot of offensive pressure on walls, as they're both quite good wallbreakers.

Checks and Counters:
I think you should bring back Heatran. I think you used to have it, but it's gone now. If Mega Pidgeot doesn't run Hidden Power Ground, Heatran counters it completely, making it a serious problem.

Great job, only have to expand on some details. Make sure to distinguish why the slashing order is the way it is! QC 2/3

Set Details
========

Usage Tips
========

Mega Evolve Pidgeot as soon as possible, (RC) so it can take advantage of the new Speed and power as soon as it can.

========

Other Options
=============

===================
