1. Official Tournaments + Tour Nights Overview

This thread is the information hub for all Monotype PS! Room Events hosted by the Monotype staff and trusted project hosts. Some of these events include tour nights, CCATs, and our OM Highlights & weekly Monothreat types.

Official Tournaments

Winning official tournaments in the Monotype room will earn you points towards our monthly leaderboard. At the end of the month, the user in first place on our leaderboard will win the roomprizewinner (^) rank or a temporary custom discord role color. As well as standard gens 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 Monotype, the OM Highlight & Threat type of the week will also be official tournaments. Our OM Highlight changes every 2 weeks, and our Threat type changes weekly. You can find out what the current OM & Threat types are just by checking our roomintro, so this gives you time in advance to prepare teams. At the end of the month, as well as getting the prizewinner rank, we will record the top 3 users on the leaderboard in a hall of fame in this thread.

Monotype Tour Nights

In a similar vein to RoA tour nights, Monotype staff will now be hosting official scheduled tour nights in the Monotype PS! room. These will include current gens, old gens, and sometimes even OMs as a way for newer users to improve in generations / metagames other than the current. At the end of the month, the user in first place on our leaderboard will also win the roomprizewinner (^) rank or a temporary custom discord role color.

Tour nights will consist of 2 official tournaments and will match the following schedule (metagames subject to change, all times EST):

Friday:
10am - 1x SV Monotype, 1x SS Monotype
10pm - 1x SV Monotype, 1x SM Monotype

Saturday:
10am - OM Host Choice 2x
10pm - 1x SV Monotype, 1x BW Monotype

Sunday:
10am - Featured OM Highlight, Featured Threat Type
10pm - 2x Room-voted Official Tiers

Monday:
10am - 1x ORAS Monotype, 1x BW Monotype
10pm - OldGen Host Choice 2x

These tournaments will be official and thus contribute to our monthly leaderboard. Note that this does not mean tournaments hosted at different times will be unofficial; all supported OMs and Gens formats will be official tournaments.

See our Past Generations forum for more information about these tiers and sample teams!

4. Community-Create-A-Team

Welcome to Monotype Community-Create-A-Team, a Monotype Event where users come together to build new teams as a community.

During a CCAT, the host guides the community through building a team. Users involved will work together step-by-step to decide the team's build, pick teammates to support the core, and flesh out sets. Finished teams will be posted in this thread and gathered in the archive below, alongside a brief description of the team-building process. CCATs will be hosted ~twice a month basis and you must have approval from the project hosts to host. Users will comment in the chat about a Pokemon they would like to build around and momentarily, a poll will be made to determine the choice!

There will be 2 phases of selecting what the team shall be built around:

Submissions Phase:
-

Voting Phase:
A day before the CCAT, a room poll will be held in the monotype room to choose which core will be built on the following day.

Hosting and Schedule:
CCATs will be held twice a month, usually on weekend nights of GMT+8. The schedule will be announced before every month starts.

Here are some general guidelines regarding CCATs:
  • Every CCAT will centre team-building around a specific idea––a core, a set, or an archetype.
  • Do not argue or appeal this idea during discussion. You may use this thread to suggest cores or ideas for an upcoming CCAT.
  • Suggestions for the team should be thoughtful. Remember that the purpose of the CCAT project is to build teams that are viable in the metagame. Creative and unconventional ideas are welcome and should be discussed.
  • When discussing a Pokemon, consider it both individually and in the larger context of the team. What role does it fill? How does it support the team? What support does it itself need?
  • Be prepared to make many revisions to the team throughout the CCAT. Adjustments to movesets, EVs, or entire teamslots will be common at each stage of team-building.
  • Remember, discussion should, first and foremost, be civil and respectful. Flaming, shitposting, and hostility will not be tolerated.

5. Unofficial Events

Other events may take place in the room from time to time, but do not have a set schedule. The events below are specifically for fun and do not contribute to the official monthly leaderboard.

Hangman
Trivia
Mafia

Any tournament that is not an official Monotype tier (generations 5-9 or official OM's) will likely fall under this. You may see crazy rulesets like Mono Random Battle Mayhem, mixed OM's, or whatever the host's feeling on a whim.
8s is a team vs team game. Two captains will draft players from a pool of those participating (usually ending up with 4 players on each team, hence the name 8's). Generally, the captain who picked second will pick the first matchup, and subsequent matchups will be chosen by the captain from the losing player's team. If you win, you stay on the team; if you lose a game, you are eliminated.

There are varying rules or customizations that can be used to play 8's, such as team or type locks (you can't change teams or types once you've played), generations (you can have the non-matchup selecting captain pick the generation the matchup will be played in), and more.
Kahoot! is a game-based learning platform that makes it easy to create, share and play learning games or trivia quizzes in minutes. Expect to see questions from Monotype's past or potentially even specifically EV'd damage calculations and see if you can finish on top!

6. Monotype OM Room Events Minithread Overview

This thread is the information hub for all Monotype OM PS! Room Events hosted by the Monotype staff and trusted project hosts.

Official Tournaments

Winning official tournaments in the Monotype OM room will earn you points towards our monthly leaderboard.

At the end of the month, the user in first place on our leaderboard will also win the roomprizewinner (^) rank and a custom appropriate Discord role for one month.

Tour nights will consist of 3 official tournaments and will match the following a monthly schedule by host availability. Each Friday the event hosts will host a series of tour nights throughout the day for users to compete to earn the prize winner ranking in the room.

Friday: 3x Select OM Highlight Tournaments

These tournaments will be official and thus contribute to our monthly leaderboard. Note that this does not mean tournaments hosted at different times will be unofficial; all supported OMs and Gens formats will be official tournaments.

Review the Monotype OM Subforum or join the Monotype OM Discord for more information about these tiers and sample teams!

We made our First CCAT around Skeledirge + Talonflame, with ASKid679 iBones kennukem Toy Time King Rex Slayer style.css and crocs with crocs. Thank you so much for the participation even if we ended a bit late:blobnom:
Screenshot_461.png

:skeledirge: :talonflame: :chi-yu: :torkoal: :tauros-paldea: :iron-moth:
The team was built around the core of Skeledirge and Talonflame. To support the defensive capabilities of these Pokemon, Torkoal was an easy addition. With it setting Sun to dampen Water-type attacks, Stealth Rock to wear down opposing teams, Lava Plume to support Skeledirge's Hex, and Body Press to punish Dark-types such as Roaring Moon that can get in against Torkoal and start setting up for free. At first, we thought that Scovillain could have a spot in the team to deal with pesky Water-types such as Dondozo, but we removed it as we struggled to have decent speed control later down the line. Because Scovillain isnt here, we decided to run Heavy-Duty Boots on Torkoal instead.

Then, we decided to add Chi-yu to deal with Ghost-types that Skeledirge may struggle with. Originally, we wanted to run a Choice Scarf set to exert much heavier pressure against Ghost teams, but we went for Choice Specs instead to provide wallbreaking power, considering that the current team doesnt exert any offensive pressure at the moment.

Because we still dont have a Pokemon that deals with Dark-types, Paldean Tauros was added. Originally, we also wanted to use a Choice Scarf set too, because we felt it was too slow to be using a Choice Band set, especially with behemoths such as Roaring Moon being around. We settled for a Bulk Up set when we added the last team mate who provided ample speed control for the team. Since Cud Chew was an interesting ability, we tried to make use of it. Sitrus berry was first brought up with a set such as Bulk Up/Raging Bull or Flame Charge/Close Combat/Wild Charge, but we found Ibone's set using Salac Berry with Protect interesting, as this allows Tauros to outspeed the entirety of Dark teams over two turns,

Since we had no Choice Scarf user at this point, we opted to use Choice Scarf Iron Moth, notably due to its ability to handle Water teams and to outspeed Choice Scarf Iron Treads. Other Pokemon such as Bulk-carona and Scovillain were floated around as possible options, but Choice Scarf Iron Moth had the least arguments against it. As Fire teams do not struggle against Grass teams and exert enough pressure against Fairy teams, Dazzling Gleam was used over Sludge Wave as a last-ditch effort to clean up Dragon and Dark matchups.

With all the team mates taken into account, we then tinkered around Skeledirge's set. Ibones presented his Crocodile collection and convinced us to change the set of Torch Song + Hex for Fire Spin + Curse (Take note of Curse's effect when the user is a Ghost-type) to stallbreak, but few of our participants weren't as convinced. However, the idea of a Croc with an Air Balloon stuck as it provided an alternative counterplay against Ground-types that are out of control, so Air Balloon was used instead. The EV spread allows Skeledirge deal with Roaring Moon, as it can live a Crunch, Burn it, then still live a burned Roaring Moon's Crunch. The rest of the EVs were dumped into SpDef, allowing it to be a good tank.

On the other hand, Talonflame was the least contested in terms of spread and set. Originally, we wanted to add Taunt to counter Annihilape, but we decided to just counter it offensively using Brave Bird. The spread allows Talonflame to 2HKO Annihilape while at the same time survive its Raging Fists. 48 Spe with a Jolly nature lets it outpace base 100 speed Pokemon such as Paldean Tauros, which is neat for the team. After these changes, the final team was presented and the participants were satisfied with the results.
