More Goodstuff

Hello, this is The Knights of Wario Land, here bringing yet another VGC RMT.

You might or might not remember that I posted a previous RMT before Regionals, but sadly, the team ended not working out at all, due to some severe flaws with it.

Despite this, I decided to rethink the team yet again, and hopefully, this time will be better, now with me actually using RNGed Pokes instead of hand-raising them myself.

THE TEAM:

Thundurus @ Electric Gem
electricjewel.png

Ability: Prankster
EVs: 4 HP/252 SpA/252 Spe
Nature: Modest
-Thunderbolt
-Hidden Power (Ice)
-Taunt
-Substitute

Thundurus is one of the main cores behind the team: nearly all the rest of the Pokemon on the team were build around him entirely. Thundurus is an awesome Pokemon, with Electric Gem-powered Thunderbolt taking out nearly everything that doesn't resist it, Hidden Power Ice when dealing with Zapdos, Garchomp, or another Thundurus, Taunt to stop cold setups such as Trick Room or Tailwind, and priority Substitute is chosen over Protect because, if played right, it can set Thundurus up for a guaranteed sweep.

376.png

Metagross @ Choice Scarf
choicescarf.png

Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 4 HP/252 Atk/252 Spe
Nature: Adamant
-Meteor Mash
-Zen Headbutt
-Earthquake
-Rock Slide

Metagross is the main powerhouse on my team. With fantastic typing and a vast movepool, Metagross has an answer to almost everything. Choice Scarf gets rid of its generic speed, Meteor Mash can miss but it is the best STAB Metagross can get (I received this one via 5th Gen, so it's incompatible with Iron Head), Zen Headbutt hit Hitmontop HARD, Earthquake is a fantastic spread move, and the same goes for Rock Slide, hitting Zapdos right where it hurts.

591.png

Amoonguss @ Mental Hearb
mentalherb.png

Ability: Effect Spore
EVs: 252 HP/4 Def/252 Sp.D
Nature: Calm
-Spore
-Giga Drain
-Rage Powder
-Protect

With my experience at regionals, I realized the two walls I brought along did the most work, so I thought to myself, why not pack the best support wall in the game? The set on Amoonguss is fairly standard, with Spore and Rage Powder causing massive, well, rage with the opponent, and Giga Drain deals with Gastrodon quite well. Mental Herb is used, as it will prevent Amoonguss from becoming dead water when taunted.

381.png

Latios @ Dragon Gem
dragonjewel.png

Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP/252 Sp.A/252 Spe
Nature: Timid
-Draco Meteor
-Psyshock
-Hidden Power (Ground)
-Protect

Realizing I need something to get good coverage over Hitmontop and Garchomp, only one mighty dragon soared over the rest: Latios. It's incredibly quick, incredibly powerful, and deals with a ton of threats well. I considered Espeon, but Latios actually forms perfect synergy with other members of my team, able to resist Metagross' Earthquake.

639.png

Terrakion @ Focus Sash
focussash.png

Ability: Justified
EVs: 4 HP/252 Atk/252 Spe
Nature: Adamant
-Rock Slide
-Close Combat
-Earthquake
-Protect

Terrakion, though it shares some other weaknesses with my team, has been such as hugely beneficial Pokemon for a team I just had to put him on. This is a pretty standard set, with a good enough movepool to hit a variety of threats very hard. Terrakion is sashed mostly because of its low survivability and lots of weaknesses, and I've found that Sashed Terrakion is one of the most effective Pokemon out there.

Rotom-W @ Sitrus Berry
10.png

Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP/252 Sp.A/252 Spe
Nature: Modest
-Hydro Pump
-Thunderbolt
-Hidden Power (Fire)
-Protect

The last slot is always hard for a team builder, because it must have good coverage over all the team's weaknesses. Realizing I had no good water coverage, and seeing my team could go for a little more bulk, I decided to go with the bulky water attacker itself: Rotom-W. Rotom-W has excellent coverage over my foe's weaknesses, not even fearing the Grass-types that give it trouble including Abomasnow. It also has great synergy, resisting Metagross and Terrakion's Earthquake well.

THREATS:
186.png
272.png
RAIN: Thudurus, Amoonguss, and Rotom are all fantastic checks to most all rain teams, making up for each other's weaknesses, Ludicolo is the only real threat I can't hit super effectively

460.png
HAIL: Again, Rotom will take nothing from Choice Scarf Blizzard, and Terrakion will knock Abomasnow out or put it to its sash, then E-Speed the next turn. Same goes for Metagross, he will have an easy time taking them out.

488.png
356.png
609.png
TRICK ROOM: Thundurus carries Taunt mostly for this reason, keeping my team at the sped advantage, and screwing over Cresselia and Dusclops majorly. Amoonguss and Metagross are the best things to bring in if it can be set up.Chandelure gives problems to other members of my team, but the ones that can counter it do well.

145.png
445.png
212.png
423.png
GOODSTUFF: In general, this is what my team is the most-prepared for, learning from my mistakes at regionals. Zapdos and Hitmontop are the two most-seen threats, and I've made sure I've got everything in order to counter them effectively.

248.png
530.png
SAND: Again, something my team is well-prepared for. Many of my Pokemon hold moves that cause massive trouble to these Pokemon, Tyranitar really not doing much at all to my team.

While it's nice you are trying some uncommon things, they don't necesarily work great in this metagame. Arcanine hates Garchomp, and while it will have eaten Intimidate EQ is going to leave massive dents. Abomasnow has Scarf VERY often, if you have taken much damage already it could HP Ground you. I have never tried Arc myself, but I feel there are other mono-Fire options that are superior, you would just lose Intimidate.

Espeon speed ties Latios, which could be an issue because you can't do anything to it. If Latios goes first, it could activate Espeon's Sash with Gem Draco Meteor or go after the partner. Espeon's coverage is a bit mediocre, it can't hit much of anything other then Hitmontop very hard, and he will Sucker Punch to activate Sash before that. Latios could do better, you lose Magic Bounce but Latios does everything else better.

Amoonguss could be better with Sitrus. Black Sludge is OK but the sudden boost from Sitrus will be good, especially since Amoon tends to be such a high priority target he won't be around forever.

Suicune could live without Sitrus, if his Tailwind is really important Latios>Espeon could do it instead. I don't know if he has other really specific roles on the team, btu if Abomasnow isn't locked into a move it will hurt Suicune with Grass type moves.

Thundurus should be Timid. Outrunning stuff like Garchomp, Latios and Latias is important, and you have HP Ice to hopefully deal with them. HP Ice doesn't OHKO much of anything, but it has good coverage with Tbolt and should be kept.

Currently, the team has weaknesses to Latios and Thundurus. Meta could have Ice Punch over EQ, cause it will do notable damage to your teammates.

-I'm actually looking at Darmanitan right now and I'm thinking that he could actually fill the role of Life Orb a bit better, especially 'cause he takes no recoil from it. I might consider running him.

-Latios is definitely one I'm considering right now, even though that means that now I have three mons weak to Blizzard, I guess it has better coverage.

-I'll try to see what Sitrus does with Amoonguss

-Actually, Modest HP Ice has gotten me some good hits before, I've found that Timid lacks the power I like. I will look into Timid, though.

-I currently have no legal access to an Ice Punch Metagross, and I still believe that I need at least a little Ground coverage on my team.

Ok, while I love the concept of this team, there's a few things that you could change for the better. I'll go as in depth as my attention span lets me :P

THUNDURUS
1) Don't run electric gem on Thundurus unless it is needed to 2HKO things (the only two things it OHKOs are Politoed and Gyarados, and Sitrus is a better option by FAR if that's your idea). If you're going to run max SpAtk you will not need it to 2HKO anything you wouldn't already. If you are going to insist running it, use some bulk on it and calc to make sure elec gem 2HKOs Metagross and Politoed.
2) HP flying is generally better, especially since it is your rain counter, and HP fly can handle Ludicolo, Parasect, Amoonguss, and Breloom with more ease than HP ice.

METAGROSS
1) On Scarfgross, use Iron Head. Meteor Mash misses too much alongside Zen Headbutt to be effective, and Steel is not a giant coverage move either. Also Iron Head gives you a flinch chance, and on a scarf mon flinch moves are fantastic.
2) Run Ice Punch over Rock Slide, as the only thing you're trying to KO is Volcarona with Rock Slide, and it doesn't OHKO it if you're playing a good player anyways (ZHbutt will 2HKO!)
3) Minus Thundurus, your entire team gets rocked by your own EQ. Make sure you have a plan for that and think ahead!

AMOONGUSS
1) Ok, I have used this thing for over a year...and it needs to have 1 of two sets. Either Resto Chesto or Mental Herb, as Black Sludge is not going to do anything great in the long run. If it's your TR counter also run level 49 as it will outspeed Reuniclus and Musharna.
2) The moveset is great, leave it as it is...unless you run Resto Chesto, then change Protect to Rest.
3) Run Sassy Nature and 0 Speed EVs

ESPEON
1) I suggest changing Espeon out, it doesn't really do a whole lot for you in this metagame. Maybe something like Latios, Cresselia, or if you really want to be bold (and have something fit your team), Musharna, and redesign your team to run TR, as it has the capacity to do it right now.

ARCANINE
1) I disagree with Drifblim on this one, Arcanine can be used. You have the right set and item, just have to tweak it with calcs so that it survives things like EQ.

SUICUNE
1) I really dislike Tailwind on 'Cune. It does not help your team at all, and if the other team sneaks in TR, you're done for. Run something like H-Pump instead (it can run both H-Pump and Scald, one for consistency the other for the Kaboom).
2) Sitrus is a great item on it, I'd keep it there.
3) Again, I suggest more calcs on this thing.

OVERALL:
1) USE A DAMAGE CALC! (CLICK HERE for the one I use, you'll need Silverlight, which is free and takes up no space)You are currently only looking at attacking and outspeeding right now, you need to also look into defending your mons against common things. You can sacrifice some attack and speed for defense to live things like 2 Zapdos Thunderbolts, Garchomp EQs, etc.
2) Consider running TR on this team. You only need 1 mon to set it up as you are using goodbulkystuffs, and it could be deadly, especially in the back. Musharna would do well as it could work alongside Arcanine and give it HH support.
3) Build Thundurus bulkier, or use Zapdos, as Amoonguss is pretty much enough of a TR counter. The taunt may be more useful on Thundurus though, I cannot lie, I love that move.

If you have any Q's or need help feel free to ask!

-Zach

You should run more speed on Metagross - with Choice Scarf and his current speed, he hits 135 speed, which is pretty dreadful with a Scarf. Just FYI. Having enough speed to beat the genies would probably be a good benchmark (whatever that is).
Also, if the lack of max speed is hurting Latios, you could try another move over Hidden Power. Dragon Pulse, Tailwind and Substitute all spring to mind, all with their uniquities, so worth thinking about.

Alright, realizing that I don't need Suicune's Taiwind, I decided to slip in Rotom-W instead, 'cause it outclasses Suicune in nearly every way.

I'm also considering running either Cresselia or Terrakion somewhere on my team, the coverage and roles they give could help bolster my team tremendously.
