mtr's Team from the Tutoring Program

K, so this was the team I made, along with help from LonelyNess (the best tutor alive), as part of our tutoring program. It's a pretty typical UU team, but I have trouble with Grass-types such as Venusaur, Torterra, Leafeon, etc, so I thought that I would post this to get advice. As usual, all advice is appreciated, provided that you know something about UU, lol.

Maybe a couple weeks later I'll post one of my physically offensive teams that I made alongside this team.

In Depth...

Froslass (F) @ Focus Sash
Ability: Snow Cloak
EVs: 6 HP/252 Spd/252 SAtk
Timid nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Spikes
- Taunt
- Destiny Bond / Ice Shard
- Shadow Ball
---
This thing is definitely the Deoxys-S of UU: it is the most-used lead, can reliably put up Spikes, and can always function at least decently regardless of the opposing lead. I'm not a fan of speed ties, but Froslass is too good to pass up. I use Shadow Ball simply because Froslass is the most common lead, and IMO Ice Beam is a subpar option due to this exact reason. There's little justification needed regarding why I need Spikes: so much of the UU tier is grounded, and extra residual damage never hurts.

Hariyama (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 6 HP/252 Atk/252 Def
Brave nature (+Atk, -Spd)
- Substitute
- Focus Punch
- Payback
- Stone Edge
---
I actually used a Mismagius here until LonelyNess pointed out that I had a crippling weakness to Umbreon, which is why I put in this guy. He functions a lot like a UU Boah: as a stallbreaker. 0 Speed IVs makes me slower than Slowbro (lol how ironic), letting me strike him with a base 100 power Payback. Focus Punch is the crux of the set, of course, destroying anything that doesn't resist it, and Fighting/Dark offer unresisted coverage in UU. Stone Edge rounds out the set, striking targets like the ever-so-common Moltres.

Dugtrio (M) @ Life Orb
Ability: Arena Trap
EVs: 6 HP/252 Atk/252 Spd
Jolly nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- Night Slash
- Sucker Punch
---
Dugtrio is the glue. It checks so many random threats, from Raikou to Moltres to Mismagius (given no Substitute). Perhaps most importantly, it helps kill Registeel so Raikou can sweep the opponent. Earthquake, Stone Edge, and Night Slash are givens for the purpose of coverage, whereas Sucker Punch is another emergency check on threats that might have set up on my team for whatever reason (maybe Slowbro or Registeel died prematurely or something, I don't know lol). And what better partner for Dugtrio than...

243.png

Raikou @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 6 HP/252 Spd/252 SAtk
Timid nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Substitute
- Calm Mind
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power [Ice]
---
My sweeper of choice. The numerous bulky waters in UU lend themselves to being setup fodder for Raikou, who can then set up a Substitute and deal at least some damage before switching out to another Pokemon. Also an excellent Moltres check if for whatever reason Slowbro bites it. Finally, Raikou is an integral part of my strategy for checking Rain teams: wait for the Rain to run out, and ideally start to rape face. Unfortunately, my team performs less than stellarly against Rain, but that's another reason to post this, lol.

80.png

Slowbro (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Own Tempo
EVs: 252 HP/252 Def/6 SAtk
Bold nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Surf
- Psychic
- Calm Mind
- Slack Off
---
Slowbro is part one of the "Regibro" combo, able to at least check every threat in UU. Calm Mind helps it become a more reliable check on the likes of Moltres and TWave Chansey (if, for whatever reason, Dugtrio can't get it). Slowbro helps me deal with the likes of Feraligatr and Azumarill, who otherwise devastate my team. Finally, Psychic is there for Venusaur switch-ins, who otherwise give me some trouble.

379.png

Registeel @ Leftovers
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 252 HP/100 Atk/156 SDef
Careful nature (+SDef, -SAtk)
- Stealth Rock
- Thunder Wave
- Iron Head
- Earthquake
---
Every UU team needs Stealth Rock and a Normal-type resist to get crucial KOes and to make sure that Swellow doesn't assrape it, respectively. Registeel fulfills that order, and also provides useful paralysis support for my Substitute users, who can exploit the "it's fully paralyzed" turns whenever possible. And as long as I had Registeel, I figured that I might as well check Raikou, which is done via Earthquake.

Threat List:
Venusaur: I don't have any hard counters, sadly. Honestly this team hates Grasses.
Froslass: My own Froslass, and Registeel.
Mismagius: Dugtrio and Froslass check it.
Raikou: Registeel, Dugtrio.
Milotic: Raikou.
Registeel: Dugtrio, Hariyama.
Uxie: Froslass, Registeel, Slowbro, Raikou sets up.
Arcanine: Slowbro.
Donphan: Slowbro.
Hitmontop: Slowbro.
Rhyperior: Slowbro, Hariyama.
Ambipom: Registeel.
Spiritomb: Hariyama beats all variants bar WoW users, but I guess a Nasty Plotter would be trouble.
Moltres: Slowbro, Moltres checks.
Azumarill: Slowbro
Alakazam: Registeel, I guess. Dugtrio has Sucker Punch. But this guy is trouble.
Clefable: Hariyama.
Swellow: Registeel.

As I said, I have trouble with Grass-types, Alakazam, and Feraligatr, so any help there is appreciated.

Thanks for responding.

Just a little Nitpick try Thunderbolt over Taunt on Froslass. It looks like a pretty solid team and if you're weak to grass types maybe put Ice Beam over taunt on Froslass (sorry if my rate sucks)

Sup mtr ▲,

Seems like a well built team with LonelyNess, but I would like to help you out with fixing this team up. The first issue at hand is your huge Moltres problem. I don't think you have a reliable switch-in on Moltres; Slowbro is 2HKOed by Fire Blast and Hidden Power Grass, while Hariyama (your next bet for a defensive Pokemon) dies from Air Slash. A smart Moltres player can easily switch out if you bring in Dugtrio or Raikou. With this being said, your best shot at dealing with Moltres, while still maintaining a sufficient amount of physical defense is adding Milotic to your team. A bold Moltres that has 252 Hp / 252 Def / 6 SpD for its EV spread with the moveset Surf / Hp Grass / Haze / Recover can certainly help with help with this Moltres issue. Haze is there over Ice Beam for reasons I will explain next paragraph.

With Haze on Milotic, it is a surefire weapon against CurseUmbreon and stat-up boosters in general - 46 pp of stall-fest is enough to beat a portion of the stat-uppers. With this being said, Hariyama feels extremely unnecessary now. The addition of Arcanine might be your best shot against these Grass-types your having troubles with. Arcanine seems to mesh well with this type of team: very defensive yet somewhat offensive. An Arcanine set that runs Jolly with the EVs 252 HP / 120 Atk / 136 Spe and the movesets Morning Sun / Flare Blitz / Will-O-Wisp / Extremespeed. This type of Arcanine is designed to check a portion of the Grass-types. Enough speed to outpace base 80s, Morning Sun to heal off constant hits and Wow to deal with stupid physical attackers attempting to come in (hello rhyperior). With a possible Wow on Rhyperior, this will allow Milotic to switch in more easily without taking a shitload of damage. The lack of Slowbro means you'll miss out on a huge physical wall, although Milotic is still suitable for physical walling, so dont worry.

As for other options, the team is quite fast, try your hands on toxic over thunder wave on registeel. From experience, Thunder Wave is a terrible move since most of your common switch-ins are Grounded. Toxic however, provides you with a way to effectively deal with the impregnable milotic. With Raikou gone, I don't think you can possibly stop it. Toxic is ultimately for emergency. Additionally, it works out well with Sub CM raikou. Lastly, Thunderbolt over Taunt means that Omastar will never get a full stack of hazards on you easily. the absence of rapid spin makes this team extremely weak to stall, so its probably best to prevent it from being layed down as soon as possible. overall gl.

Thank you both. I will put Thunderbolt over Taunt on Froslass, and implement franky's changes of Milotic and Arcanine.

Ok so here's the thing, if Torterra uses Rock Polish you are 6-0ed. Plain and simple, nothing at all you can do about it except for maybe stall out LO, but by the time that happens a significant amount of your core will be destroyed. Replacing Hariyama for Arcanine and Slowbro for Milotic will help significantly with your Venusaur weakness whilst still staying strong against Cursers, but I suggest replacing either Dugtrio or Raikou with either a Choice Scarfer with Hidden Power Ice such as Rotom (a great weapon against stall too!).

Another option (which I prefer actually) would be to forego Arcanine all together and replace Hariyama with Sleep Powder/Earthquake/Power Whip/Hidden Power Ice Tangrowth. It stops Venusaur and Torterra in their tracks as well as Rain shit like Kabutops (which like most teams, your team really doesn't like in the rain, Slowbro allows too much to set up).

One last nitpick is Taunt Froslass. Seriously, when would you ever be better off Taunting then Spiking? Plus with Froslass being headhunted by pretty much every other UU lead now, it has better things to do (like its job) then preventing Stealth Rock or something on something that can kill it anyway.

Cool team though, I like the defensive core and Dugtrio! Good luck :)

ROFL this team is so ridiculously similar to mine its not even funny. Anyway I'd like to suggest you try beat up on duggy for stupid gay chansey probably over night slash. I also use it and i gotta say it seriously makes raikous sweep that much easier. You could always try explosion over t-wave on registeel too and see if you can get venu if it stays in for w/e reason. Anyway good luck not much to say tbh...

Actually I've also been having a bit of trouble with CB Rhyperior spamming EQ, so I guess a Scarf Rotom would work well over Dugtrio, fulfilling many of the same purposes whilst checking RP Torterra.

yea i was actually contemplating the use of arcanine before i saw franky's post but over raikou instead, since you can lure in grass types and hit them with hp grass, add recovery with morning sun, and also add cool priority to help with rain teams in the form of extremespeed. i was thinking a set of flare blitz hp grass morning sun and espeed. i guess you could try that to help with vena problems and such. good luck man
