My Blind Dive into the 5th Gen Metagame

Alright heres the backstory, In the days of 4th gen when Latias was still OU, I made a very successful team (by my standards) about 2 days before Latias became Uber. It worked out that as i was climbing (my rating was 1420 and on the rise) the star of my show, a Sub-Salac Latias, was no longer usable. I tried to rebuild the team with a different star, but it just wasn't the same. I lost interest in Pokemon and did other things. Now with the advent of the new generation I feel that the time is right for me to try again. However being out of the metagame for a while, I no longer no what's effective. I have tried to get onto Shoddy but it no longer works for me (have they changed the Smogon server, or is their another place to test out a 5th gen team?). My style with my previous team was get a lot of potent offensive threats with only one or two counters, eliminate the counters and then destroy the remaining team. This is also the mindset I tried to use behind this team. Without further ado, the team.

Also on a side not, sorry for how bland the EV spreads are, the team idea is to break special walls with sheer force then run through teams, so max special attack and speed are the go to.

The Lead

Agiruuda

617Agirudaa_Dream.png

Nature: Modest
Ability: Sticky Hold
Item: Life Orb
EV's: 4 HP / 252 Sp. Atk / 252 Spd.

Moves:
- Bug Buzz
- Energy Ball
- U-Turn
- Spikes

Not exactly a typical lead, but it seamed interesting to me. Against any suicide lead, I will U-turn to break sash and go to Espeon to negate any entry hazards that could potentially criple Ulgamoth. He can come back in later to put up spikes but he can also hit hard with the STAB Bug Buzz. Energy Ball is for Swampert leads. Modest over timid because I don't think that anything will be outrunning him, if their is something please let me know.

Espeon

espeon.png

Nature: Timid
Ability: Magic Mirror
Item: Light Clay
EV's: 4 HP / 252 Sp. Atk / 252 Spd.

Moves

- Psychic
- Relfect
- Light Screen
- Baton Pass

When I looked at dreamword ability's, this thing stuck out as really cool. I can potentially get hazard up and not have to worry about them being put down without waisting a move to do it, a huge plus. She fits into the tem with her high stats and sweeping ability. She has HP Fighting for Tyranitar, it's always a 2HKO. Protect to see if I should stay or flee (is it using pursuit or crunch). Reflect is for Scizor who is never scarfed so I can Protect to scout, and if it is pursuiting I use reflect and then 2-3HKO it with HP Fighting. Espeons main purpose is to prevent stealth rock, if it does this and gets attacks or a screen up, I'm happy.

Suicune

Nature: Bold
Ability: Water Absorb
Item: Leftover
EV's: 252 HP / 252 Df. / 4 Sp. Atk

Moves

- Rest
- Sleep Talk
- Roar
- Surf

I needed at least 1 pokemon with decent bulk to provide a check to the physical pokemon my team may not like. Max defense is to be as bulky as possible on the physical side, most of my pokemon are actually quite bulky in special defense. He can Roar out anything with a boost, and he deals with those nasty pusuiters no problem. Surf is a good STAB move that will still do solid damage to those that don't resist.

Sanzadora

Nature: Lonely
Item: Life Orb
EV's: 200 Atk. / 52 Sp. Atk. / 252 Spd.

Moves

- Draco Meteor
- Taunt
- Dragon Claw
- Crunch

This is my wall / Blissey breaker. Since he is most often special, Blissey comes in if I Draco something, takes 35%-ish damge, the procedes to get KO'd (with hazards up) with either physical move. This is the only poke I'm lost on, I came up with the movset to fit my needs so I'm pretty sure it's not perfect. If anyone else has a better way to effectively kill Blissey but still fits on a special attacking team, please chime in.

Ulgamoth

Nature: Timid
Ability: Swarm
Item: Life Orb
EV's: 252 Sp. Atk. / 252 Spd./ 4 Hp.

Moves

-Butterfly Dance
-HP Ice
-Flame Wing/ Flamethrower
-Bug Buzz

When I first saw this guy I really wanted to use him. He has a great setup move and this moveset offers great coverage and massive power. Without rocks on the field he should be able to get a Butterfly Dance in and continue to power up with Flame Wing along the way. The only reason I'm not sold on Flame Wing is the its power is lower then flamethrower, even though this is negated after the first time I use it. Bug Buzz is for STAB and HP Ice gets dragons and grounds for super effective hits.

Latios

Latios-1.png

Nature: Timid
Ability: Levitate
Item: Salac Berry
EV's: 252 Sp. Atk. / 252 Spd./ 4 Hp.

Moves

- Substitute
- Calm Mind
- Surf
- Dragon Pulse

Damn what a monster. On a switch out to a counter, sub up. From then either CM or Sub, try to stay behind a sub until you get the Salac Boost. Once the Salac activates you should have at least 1 CM under your belt and boosted speed. STAB Dragon Pulses hit incredibly hard and Surf provides awesome coverage. I came up with this set for Latias and I have no reason to believe it won't work on her brother. I will bring him out midgame once I know there is no Blissey to deal with. With her out of the way it is very hard to stop his rampage.

Well thats my team. Please give constructive criticism on how it can be improved, Thanks!

Terakion eats you alive. So does CBtar. And other Rock-types.

The reason for this is because you lack a rock resist.

Since you also lack a revenge killer, why not try Techniloom? Mach Punch KOs shit with priority, Spore is Spore, Bullet Seed is lulzy, and so is Breloom. It also scares Blissey away. Use it over Sazzy, since it has redundant typing with Latios.

Also, try HP Fire over Surf on Latios. Nattorei is quite a bit more common then Heatran. Like, five or six times as common.

Also, why not try Dual Screen Espeon? Psychic/Reflect/Light Screen/Baton Pass @ Light Clay, 252 hp/252 speed Timid. It gets up a screen fast, and BPs out of Pursuit. Durable Dual Screens really help pokemon set up and sweep.

Rather than Agiruuda a Skarmory would be a much better Spiker and physical wall in general. Taunt, Spikes, Whirlwind and Roost will help you stop slower mon like Hippowdon set up rocks as well as prevent other walls from setting up or healing.

I agree on scrapping Sazy. Techniloom will help finish off weakened mon and some immediate attack power is always nice. Mixmence and Landlos are better mixed attackers.

That's an interesting Latios. The unpredictability alone is worthwhile.

DarkAmber, thanks a lot. I'm definently going to change Espeon the way you suggested, I had no idea BP would escape pursuit. Dual Screens do sound nice so that sounds like a good fit. On Latios I used to run HP Fire, but it forced imperfect speed IV's which makes him loose more to other threats such as Gengar. As i test the team I'll see how large a problem Nattorei is. The main reason for surf was actually to hit the steels that are resistant to dragon pulse. I will try out the Technician Breloom seing as Sazandora is the member of my team I'm least shore of.

Jaroda, I definently agree that Sazandora should go. I wasn't sure about tier standings so I didn't know that MixMence was an option. To replace Sazandora I'm considering Breloom, MixMence or MixApe. A priority move sounds ideal. I'm not to keen on Skarmory; Agiruuda is not meant to be a spiker, it's just meant to be an option when he comes back out and I'm not sure what my opponent will be switching to. I also don't really want taunt because I want to try to abuse mirror coat. Agiruuda also looks sick too lol.

At DarkAmber, I'm pretty confident in Suicunes ability to stop Terakion, TTar, and other rocks. It's pretty bulky with max HP and defence and surf should be able to KO them both.

Single Attack Suicune is simply not viable at all. Anything with Water Absorb or Storm Drain is going to Wall, though I guess this is why you swapped Calm Mind for Roar, it's still an issue.

It's not a sweeper, it's a wall. :/

Latios seems like it'd live a Shadow Ball after a CM, though.

There are more Nattorei than Gengar.

There are probably more Nattorei then Gengar, Latias, and Latios combined.

And Latios has the advantage with the Calm Mind.

And, hey, maybe they're also Nattorei-savvy and run HP Fire as well.

first, as a general guide, replace surf with boil over (30% burn chance) and Psychic with Psycho shock (uses your spatt but hits opponents def, great for blissey)

that way you can keep saza special and still kill bliss

and pokemon online is the best sim if you don't know about it
