Hey Smogon! I am a former Pokemon addict who had to quit early January due to insane amounts of schoolwork and extracurriculars. Recently, when both began to wane, my thoughts drifted back to my old addiction, and I'm proud to say that I relapsed! After visiting Smogon for the first time in months, I saw that Skymin, one of my favorites had been banned (:'(). However, I was very excited to see Latias entry into the OU scene! That very moment, I began to create my new team, utilizing, but not based around, the new kid on the block. After several scribbled sheets, I came out with this team, and fired up Shoddy (after a quick download) and tested this team. Thus far, it's been quite good, I know that it can be much better. So enough about me, onto the team!
TEAM AT A GLANCE:
TEH LEAD
Jolteon (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Volt Absorb
EVs: 252 Spd/252 SAtk/4 SDef
Timid nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Baton Pass
- Thunderbolt
- Substitute
- Hidden Power [Ice]
---
In my time in competitive battling, I've used many leads. From suicide leads such as Azelf and Aerodactyl, to weather leads such as TTar and Abomosnow, to Trick leads, even all-out offensive leads meant to throw my opponent off-balance. Among these all, Jolteon is one of the best, and certainly most versatile, lead that I've ever used. Sub allows for great scouting, as Jolteon is faster than almost everything else, and if said sub remains intact, I can Pass it to one of Jolteon's teammates (usually Gyarados), and allow for a more easy sweep. And though he is mainly used for his scouting prowess, his attacking options aren't too shabby either; Bolt-Beam is one of the best attacking comboes in the game. Either way, Jolteon usually comes back later in the game, be it for additional scouting, another sweeping option, death fodder, an electric sponge, or another sub pass. And early game, he almost always sets the stage or tips the balance in my favor.
TEH SETUP BEAST
Gyarados (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 4 HP/252 Atk/252 Spd
Adamant nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Dragon Dance
- Ice Fang
- Waterfall
- Stone Edge
---
This. Thing. Is. Amazing. There, I said it, and it's the truth. Gyarados is a monster, and almost always takes one or two pokemon down with him, and usually tears large holes in the opposition for later exploitation. This set has been tried and tested for me on almost every team, and I am quite satisfied with it (though certainly open for suggestion). DDance is of course for additional power and speed. When he gets a sub from Jolteon, he almost always proceeds to use DD and gain a leg up on the competition, sometimes two. Waterfall is, of course, for STAB and Flinch-hax, and Ice Fang is my quintessential ice move for destroying dragons and ground types. But Stone Edge was a tough choice. I ended up choosing it mostly for cover against opposing Gyarados, as well as netting regular hits on Vaporeon and Suicune.
TEH MIXED SWEEPER
Flygon (M) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 76 HP/252 Atk/180 Spd
Naughty nature (+Atk, -SDef)
- Outrage
- Earthquake
- Fire Blast
- U-turn
---
Prior to Garchomp's banishment to the Uber regions, I had a MixedChomp and was very satisfied with it, and thus incredibly disappointed when it was banned. However, I see Flygon as a potential alternative. The Outrage/EQ combo that made Garchomp infamous can be seen here, with the two most offensive types in the game creating a powerful attack combo. FireBlast hits virtually everything that those don't, and hits for special damage, when physical attacks are expected. U-Turn is for scouting mainly, but also hits Grasses (read "Celebi") pretty hard. Like Heatran below, I was thinking about changing his item mainly, but also thinking about a possible switch from U-Turn to a Hidden Power. Though I've enjoyed the extra speed, I was thinking about switching to an expert belt and bluffing a Scarf/Band or switching to Life Orb to give me greater versatility. And though U-Turn is good in theory, I have yet to actually use it...
TEH WALL BREAKER
Latias (F) @ Choice Specs
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 Spd/252 SAtk/4 SDef
Timid nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Trick
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Draco Meteor
- Thunder
---
Ah, Latias, the dragon that brought me back. Though I recognize its defensive prowess, my offensive nature also noticed the above average Special Attack and Speed stat. These merited a try for an offensive Latias. I also figured that having an offensive oriented Latias would allow for a surprise, as well as being able to beat other Latias, who focus on Defense and Hit Points, rather than Speed. Now, the moves. Trick is another nice part; I have yet to run into another tricking Latias. And it's a big surprise when other Tricksters, thinking that they are crippling my main wall, get a choice item in return, locking them into Trick, and wasting one or two turns. The Draco Meteor is my main STAB. Seeing as I'm running a choice set (unless I use trick of course), I figure she'll be in and out quite often, so the Special Attack drop doesn't bother me, and I appreciate the extra 50 base power. HP Fire is my answer to pesky steels, who think that it's soooooo funny to switch into my poor Latias. Thunder is mostly a filler move, designed to hit steels for neutral damage if I don't want as large a risk or if Heatran rears his ugly head.
TEH WALL AND CLERIC
Celebi @ Leftovers
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 HP/252 Def/4 SAtk
Bold nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Heal Bell
- Recover
- Thunder Wave
- Leaf Storm
---
This is my one and only true wall, who also serves as a cleric. Covering many of the major weaknesses of the team, and in turn covered by many other, Celebi seemed like a natural choice. Seeing as my team does not appreciate status, Heal Bell was a must have, and really the original reasoning behind Celebi. Since it's a wall, Recover was more or less necessary, leaving me two open slots. TWave seemed like a fun move, as it messes with the opponent by spreading status, while Heal Bell cures mine. Also, it leaves a high PP move if it comes down to a stall war. Finally, seeing as Celebi is my goto pokemon when I am in danger, it gives it a move that it can nearly always use. The last move I am not as sure of. I have no real counter to Swampert, and minimal counters to bulky water, thus a grass moved seemed logical. Like Latias, Celebi is not as bothered by the stat drop, seeing as if it is attacking a lot, I likely have larger concerns than said stat drop. And it, also like Latias, appreciates the extra power. That being said, this is definitely open to suggestion; I have thought about including HP Fire, Energy Ball, or Psychic.
TEH 'SPECIAL' REVENGE KILLER
Heatran (M) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 4 HP/252 Spd/252 SAtk
Naive nature (+Spd, -SDef)
- Explosion
- Fire Blast
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Earth Power
---
Ah, Heatran. No team is truly complete without one of these floating around, are they. Most powerful fire type in the game, number one Scizor counter, one of best all-around special attackers; all of these make Heatran a major threat to be dealed with. I used the standard set, as I've experimented in the past with it, and found it to be quite nice. It serves it's purpose quite well, and as they say "if it ain't broke, don't fix it.". That being said, though I am satisfied with Heatran's performance, I was thinking about making him less offensive, switching instead to a SubTran variant. THis is due to two main reasons: first and foremost is the prevalence of choice items on this team; half the team has a choice item, and that means a lot of switching, which means a lot of passive damage. Speaking of passive damage, the other reason for this possible change is the lack thereof on my team. I have no SR, no Spikes, and no Toxic Spikes :( Personally, I was considering a Sub/SR/Fire Blast/HP ICE or Earth Power set. Looking for a lot of feedback here.
I take NO credit for the art!!! Thanks to Pokemon Elite 2000 for the "Team At A Glance" sprites and furthermore, thanks to Arkeis for the larger portraits!
So Smogon, what do you think of my team? Good? Bad? Amazing? Gave your eyes cancer? RMT!!!
Threat List to come!
