Hydreigon's access to Nasty Plot along with Substitute allows it to serve as an effective setup sweeper capable of taking advantage and dismantling defensive Pokemon. Nasty Plot boosts Hydreigon's Special Attack and allows it to break down defensive Pokemon such as Toxapex and Corviknight. Substitute works in tandem with Nasty Plot, as Hydreigon can utilize it to set up on weaker Pokemon such as Toxapex, Ferrothorn, and Appletun, avoid status from Pokemon such as Aegislash, Seismitoad, and Salazzle, and set up against forced switches. Roost is an alternative option over Substitute that also helps Hydreigon set up by keeping it healthy, but being able to avoid status and revenge killers is generally preferred. Hydreigon is useful in many matchups such as Water and Poison, and Flamethrower is chosen as the coverage move in order to hit Steel- and Grass-type Pokemon such as Ferrothorn, Whimsicott, and Corviknight for super effective damage, making it even better in those two matchups. Hydreigon should look for opportunities to set up against weaker Pokemon and punch holes in the opposing team throughout the match. Leftovers is the chosen item, as it provides Hydreigon with longevity in order to set up.
As a setup sweeper, Hydreigon appreciates the Stealth Rock support Tyranitar provides. Hydreigon also appreciates other setup sweepers in order to break down shared checks. For example, Pokemon such as Tyranitar and Bisharp appreciate Hydreigon's ability to take down Pokemon such as Toxapex, Vileplume, and Ferrothorn, while Hydreigon has trouble with some of the Pokemon that Tyranitar and Bisharp take on such as opposing Tyranitar and Grimmsnarl. Grimmsnarl is another setup sweeper that can beat Dragon-type Pokemon such as Dragapult and Kommo-o that Hydreigon has trouble with, and it appreciates Hydreigon's ability to deal with Steel-type Pokemon well. Hydreigon also appreciates the Knock Off support that Drapion and Sableye provide, as well as their ability to spread status, making them good for wearing the opposing team down so that Hydreigon can sweep. Drapion and Bisharp can also deal with Fairy-type Pokemon such as Gardevoir and Clefable for Hydreigon. Last but not least, Mandibuzz provides Defog support that prevents Hydreigon from getting continuously chipped from Stealth Rock, as well as the ability to take Fighting- and Bug-type attacks while also being able to bring Hydreigon in with U-turn.
