We would like to congratulate Showl for attaining Platinum with both cores and Illecent Excaliburn for finishing with Gold with the Normal core and Platinum with the Dragon core.

Cycle 2: Trap

For the Second Cycle we would like the challengers to utilize Pokemon that can trap and eliminate threats for their partner.

:ss/scizor-mega: :ss/magneton:
Example Tag: CCSt2 Neko
Mega Scizor is a strong late-game sweeper for Steel teams due to its access to Swords Dance, strong priority move in Bullet Punch, and decent coverage. However, Water- and Steel-types such as Urshifu-R and Celesteela give it trouble. Magneton helps Mega Scizor in this regard as Magnet Pull traps and eliminates Steel-types such as Corviknight and Celesteela and also threatens Water-types such as Urshifu-R and Toxapex for it. Take advantage of Magneton's increased Speed to take on threats such as Tornadus-T and Greninja.

:ss/nihilego::ss/muk-alola:
Example tag: CCPo2 Style
Nihilego possesses an excellent speedtier and enough coverage to cleave through teams such as Flying, Water, Fire, and Dragon. However, its unfortunately outsped and OHKO'ed by some Choice Scarf users such as Latias and Blacephalon and special walls such as Galarian Slowking and Slowking that can easily take it on. Alolan Muk removes these roadblocks for Nihilego by Pursuit trapping the aforementioned Pokemon and also wears down the opposing team by knocking off items and spreading Poison.

Bronze: 1300 ELO
Silver: 1400 ELO
Gold: 1500 ELO
Platinum: 80% GXE

This challenge will end at: June 24, 2022 at 9 PM (GMT +8). Please submit your requirements on or before the deadline

We would like to congratulate Showl and MonkweyGwoose for attaining Platinum with the Poison core, and Showl and Illecent Excaliburn for attaining Platinum with the Steel core.

Cycle 3: Unstoppable

For the Third Cycle we would like the challengers to utilize Pokemon that can prove to be unstoppable defensive wincons.

:ss/mew: :ss/slowking-galar:
Example Tag: CCPs2 Neko
Cosmic Power Mew is a potent stallbreaker, able to use defensive Pokemon such as Ferrothorn and Toxapex to boost itself and sweep the opposing team with boosted Stored Power and Body Press. However, it is extremely vulnerable to status, especially Toxic, and cannot setup on threats such as Aegislash and Blacephalon. Galarian Slowking is able to handle these and absorbs Toxic Spikes for it, making it a great team mate for the catto.

:ss/suicune: :ss/tapu-fini:
Example tag: CCWa2 Style
Calm Mind Suicune is a bulky setup sweeper that can beat its defensive checks such as Mantine and Gastrodon by draining their PP with Pressure. However, Suicune crumbles to Pokemon such as Thundurus-T and Kommo-o who can exert immediate offensive pressure, and is crippled by status such as Toxic and Paralysis. Tapu Fini helps Suicune in this regard, being able to take on Dragon-types and set Misty Terrain to protect it from Status.

Cycle 4: Immunity

For the Fourth Cycle we would like the challengers to utilize Pokemon that can cover for the team's weaknesses.

:ss/jellicent: :ss/shedinja:
Example Tag: CCGh2 Neko
Shedinja defines the archetype of Immunity, due to Magic Guard, allowing it to take on a variety of threats such as Alolan Raichu and Mega Swampert, and also deny pivoting attempts in the form of U-turn and Volt Switch, allowing it to spread status. However, its extremely susceptible to threats such as Cinderace and Mold Breaker Excadrill, which Jellicent can deal with. Jellicent also provides a secondary Water-immunity for Ghost teams and can also spread status for its teammates to effectively use Hex late-game.

:ss/krookodile: :ss/seismitoad:
Example tag: CCGr2 Style
Seismitoad holds a good niche as a Water-type immunity for Ground teams due to its ability to outspeed and remove Belly Drum Azumarill, utility in Knock Off, and its offensive presence. The mud toad is to be paired with Krookodile, which provides a Psychic immunity and utility in Pursuit-trapping threats such as Choice Scarf Latios.

Cycle 5: Paranoia

For the Final Cycle we would like the challengers to utilize Pokemon that are run to counter a certain threat. Perhaps there is more to these Pokemon aside from using them due to Paranoia?

:ss/volcanion: :ss/infernape:
Example Tag: CCFi2 Neko
Volcanion's ability to check threats such as Mega Swampert and Belly Drum Azumarill is greatly appreciated by Fire teams. However, its speed is quite lacking and can be quite hard to pivot in safely. Infernape provides pivoting for Volcanion, and checks faster threats such as Terrakion, Excadrill, and Nihilego thanks to its great speedtier and access to priority.

:ss/tapu-lele: :ss/togekiss:
Example tag: CCFa2 Style
Tapu Lele provides Psychic terrain for Fairy teams, neutralizing Mega Scizor's Bullet Punch that can be game ending for this type. This fair lady is paired with Togekiss, which eases the Grass, Poison, and Steel matchup for Fairy teams due to its typing and ability to muscle through bulkier teams thanks to the combination of Nasty Plot and Serene Grace.

Slate 2 has ended, and before we move on to the next slate [likely around when generation 9 drops], we would like to hear from you. Suggestions and thoughts about this project are welcome in this thread, while suggestions for future cores should be sent to me or style.css DMs. We would also like to know your favorite cores in this slate and if the length of each slate (5 weeks) is better.

The actual final (compiled, total) results will be updated in post # 2, but we would like to congratulate Showl for obtaining 35 points (7 Platinum records achieved) for being the winner of this slate. They will receive the room prize winner rank (c/o by style.css).

In the meantime, the NatDex Monotype staff + some of you have prepared the Pokemon of the Week, which features very cool Pokemon to use in your laddering sessions! Check it out in the NatDex Monotype room! (You can also send Neko cool sets, if you want to contribute to the project!) :blobnom:

Once again, thank you for your support!
- Neko and style.css

Better late than never, I will give my opinion on this ladder core challenge. But first, I would like to thank Neko and style.css for hosting and managing this challenge until the end. Challenges came out on time and we had more than enough time to make them. The wide diversity of the cores proposed allowed to play very different team styles as well as a lot of overshadowed pokemons, one key point of Core Challenges.

With no big surprise, I enjoyed a lot participating in this ladder core challenge. Though there are some adjustments that can be made for future slates, Ladder Core Challenge was mostly a positive experience for me. Although I did one slate in the regular Mono forum, there were quite a few differences that made this Core Challenge even more enjoyable.

More specifically, the total duration seems a perfect balance between too short and too long which would be both detrimental either by reducing the feeling of competition or by increasing the boredom. 5 weeks with each week two proposed Core Challenges, thus 10 challenges in total, allow to feel involved while not creating boredom that would likely come in the following weeks with a longer Slate.

Another good point is the diversity of the challenges proposed with some challenges easier than others. The pool of selected pokemons is great. We have not always the chance to play shedinja, for instance. Highlighting overshadowed pokemons while restricting a bit teambuilding make the laddering really interesting. You end up sometimes by wanting to actually use the featured pokemons a bit longer or in some other settings which is great. A metagame such as the Natdex mono make a lot of cool and interesting pokemons overshadowed. Core Ladder Challenge is the perfect chance to give the spotlight to those often-forgotten pokemons and I believe you did a wonderful job on that part.

On this specific point, I would suggest to go further by diversifying the restrictions. A few ideas out of the mind are giving some specific items/moves to run with or without specific pokemons. To develop, psychic challenge could ask you to use Mewnium + another mon. Although players could use this by themselves, showcasing more restricting cores might allow the participants to think more deeply about their team composition and how to address specific issues which they would not necessarily do otherwise.

A final point I would like to discuss is the ranking system. With the current state of the ladder, such a ranking system seems not challenging enough. With 6 platinums achieved in less than 30 games and a few ones in the early-20s, reaching platinum is not hard and depends more on the willingness to do the 25-30 games rather than on trying to beat the ladder. Past 13xx ELO, only a few players are still laddering which makes the laddering less fun as you end up with the same 2-3 opponents that are at 13xx ELO while you keep climbing. On that subpoint, I do not have any solution to provide. The issue is about the ladder itself.

Regarding the difficulty, as discussed on the room, it might be interesting to increase the GXE threshold for platinum to avoid meeting the platinum condition before the one from gold. Setting it up at 82.5% GXE would make it nearly impossible to reach before 1500 ELO which would be more relevant in my opinion. However, by raising up the bar for platinum, the ladder issue will get worse inevitably. Another way to tackle the difficulty issue might be related to the above suggestion. Platinum could be linked to some extra-conditions to fulfill or, to not lock platinum behind the usage of specific sets, reaching platinum with the extra-conditions fulfilled would grant more points.

Thank you again for this event and I am looking forward to the next editions :)
