VGC New to VGC, would like some help with Kyogre team

Howdy-

This is my first proper VGC team. I played a bit of Reg G with a Kyogre & Wo-Chien team that made top 8 at NAIC (here's a copy of it) but otherwise I haven't used many different teams or made my own before.

This is a bastardized version of a few sample teams I saw floating around. EVs are copied from recommended sets and more than likely not super great. Also sorry about the formatting- I haven't used Smogon forums before.

The Pokepaste: https://pokepast.es/c80ab682a30015ec.

Araquanid and and Zam are both new additions that I haven't tested yet; I've been floundering around with switching mons in and out so I just figured I'd ask for help here, as I know I need a Wide Guard mon but wasn't sure of much else.

The hope for this team is to be able to operate in both TW and TR, but they need either of these up to do well.

I feel really comfortable with the Kyogre, as it's the same one I used for a while on the NAIC team. It's super specially bulky and is there to spam spread moves or to blast things apart with its coverage.

The Zamazenta is a new addition that I'm unsure of. I feel like my team has a pretty rough matchup into Fairy types, so I'm hoping it can help with that. The EV spread is not optimized for TR so I'm not sure how it would fare there; I had a standard Miraidon as my second restricted for a bit (specs 252 SpA 252 SpD + timid) but it also struggled in TR and felt pretty squishy.

Araquanid seems like it would be a very good Wide Guard supporting mon (and work quite well in TR and in the rain) but I'm not sure how it would fare in TR. It also matches up decently into both horses, though it'll struggle with Miraidon.

Farigiraf feels pretty solid. It seems a bit squishy, but that could be an issue with me piloting it.

Iron Jugulis is another comfort mon from the NAIC team. Its hurricanes hit quite hard and snarl is a very nice supporting tool. It's extremely fast and is a good TW setter; I know I could be running Torn, but I like IJ for being able to block prankster or booster speed Flutter (though it does struggle with Flutter's Moonblast and getting blown up by that).

Amoonguss feels extremely squishy. It has decent matchups into some of the restricted mons, but I just find it getting exploded. I've been hanging onto it for the sake of Pollen Puff but I've just found myself dying more often than not.

Would really appreciate suggestions for subbing out mons and better EV spreads. :)

Heyo Joshawott14, welcome to Smogon! This team actually looks quite interesting, Iron Jugulis especially, so I'll make sure to keep that in. Without further ado, let's take a look at some weaknesses your team has.

  • :Miraidon: - Miraidon is one of the most popular Pokemon overall in the format and the most popular Restricted Pokemon. Your team not only lacks ways to hit it, but it also lacks ways to take hits from it, as Electro Drift just storms through your team.

  • :koraidon: - Koraidon teams also kind of wreck your team entirely for the same reasons as above. Specifically the teams that carry Brute Bonnet I imagine give you lots of trouble.

Changes! New additions will be highlighted in bold

:kyogre:
Kyogre @ Assault Vest
Ability: Drizzle
Level: 50
Shiny: Yes
Tera Type: Grass
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 236 SpA / 4 SpD / 12 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Thunder
- Water Spout
- Origin Pulse
- Ice Beam

A simple and small change, but it should work wonders here. Serious nature makes absolutely no sense. Modest nature seems best as you are running a slow spread, so Timid won't work and you probably don't need a nature that grants you bulk. I will note that this spread was tailored to under speed the original team's own Wo-Chien for optimal Pollen Puffs, so you can probably play around with the speed a bit.

:zamazenta-crowned:
Zamazenta-Crowned @ Rusted Shield
Ability: Dauntless Shield
Level: 50
Shiny: Yes
Tera Type: Dragon / Grass
EVs: 12 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def / 124 SpD / 116 Spe
Impish Nature
- Body Press
- Behemoth Bash
- Protect
- Wide Guard

Tera Steel really doesn't work here. Behemoth Bash isn't really used for brute force but rather to hit Ghosts and Tera Fairy Raging Bolt / Miraidon. Tera Dragon is really good into Miraidon and Koraidon, whilst also matching up well against other Kyogre. Tera Grass, on the other hand, does better into Miraidon and worse into Koraidon, but grants a Spore immunity. I swapped Iron Defense for Protect here mostly because Protect is a good move, but also because it lets you scout your opponent's move if you aren't sure what they'll do. I'm a bit iffy on the EVs, mostly because I don't really know what they do, so let me know on that!

:Araquanid: --> :chien-pao:
Chien-Pao @ Focus Sash
Ability: Sword of Ruin
Level: 50
Tera Type: Ghost
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Ice Spinner
- Sucker Punch
- Throat Chop / Sacred Sword
- Protect

Unfortunately, Araquanid isn't going to cut it. It struggles into the majority of the meta and is also really redundant here, considering you already have a Wide Guard user. Chien-Pao is a good replacement for a multitude of reasons, such as providing ways for you the threaten Miraidon and Koraidon, removing terrain, and boosting Zamazenta-C's Body Press. It also threatens all the Grass-types that scare off Kyogre. You can choose between Throat Chop and Sacred Sword, one hits Calyrex-S and Farigiraf hard whilst the other deals with Zamazenta-C and, to an extent, Dondozo.

:Farigiraf: --> :urshifu-rapid-strike:Rapid-Strike
Urshifu-Rapid-Strike @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Unseen Fist
Level: 50
Tera Type: Water / Ghost
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Surging Strikes
- Close Combat
- U-turn
- Aqua Jet

Honestly, Farigiraf doesn't make much sense either. You don't really mind if opposing Trick Room goes up so no need to have a Pokemon dedicated to denying it. Urshifu-R does really good next to Rain and Chien-Pao for maximum damage. Not much to say here, I think you could *try* Coaching over Aqua Jet, it might jot work out though. You can also try a Focus Sash or Mystic Water set if you like.

:iron jugulis: looks good!

:Amoonguss:

I'm not going to make much of a comment on Amoonguss, since the set is fine, but I don't really know if it fits here anymore. I can't really think of any certain replacements, but here are some options: :raging bolt: :rillaboom: :incineroar: :ogerpon-cornerstone:

NOTE: if you go with Rillaboom, run Icicle Crash over Ice Spinner on Chien-Pao to not accidentally remove your own terrain.

A team I enjoy very much not hard to use have fun doesn’t take much explaining just hop in double ubers and it shredes and change incenroahs ability to intemadate
Heyo Spritzy, welcome to Smogon! Unfortunately this team isn't really related to the original post, as their team is about VGC, not Doubles Ubers. This team is also completely unviable in Doubles Ubers, so I suggest checking out the sample teams or viability rankings to get an idea of what is good.

Thank you for all of this Pengu!! I saw a lot of your replies on here when I was looking for team ideas so seeing you reply was very fun. :)

It didn't actually occur to me that I shouldn't be looking to manually set up TR myself; I think it'll make it easier on me to just focus solely on setting up TW and going from there.

I think I'll pick up Rilla, as having a stronger answer answer into Miraidon would be pretty helpful. Not having AV on it will suck a bit, but I feel like giving it a Choice Band set could do pretty well.

Choice Band is alright, I think if you aren't running Assault Vest, I recommend Miracle Seed instead, specifically for Fake Out pressure.

I actually figured that, as much as I like AV Kyogre, not having protect was way too troublesome. I ended up just giving it Mystic Water and the AV to Rilla, which feels wayyyy better into Miraidon now.

Do you think it would be a poor choice to leave Ursh off the team in exchange for Incin? It has such a great toolset and completes the fire/water/grass core, and I've just not found myself really bringing Ursh at all, except for sometimes using Coaching on Zam.
