Wartortle’s access to Shell Smash along with solid bulk and offensive coverage makes it a decent sweeper in the NFE metagame. Surf threatens the likes of Raboot and Piloswine, and Ice Beam allows it to deal with Water-resistant Pokemon like Tangela and Roselia. Wartortle is also quite capable of removing entry hazards with Rapid Spin against the likes of Clefairy and Vullaby. However, Wartortle tends to struggle with the likes of Thwackey and Mareanie, with the former being able to revenge kill it for free with Grassy Glide and the latter simply being an incredibly reliable defensive answer to Wartortle that can very easily shut it down via Haze or Toxic. Teammates such as Raboot, Kadabra, and Ferroseed can help answer these threats for Wartortle while providing offensive support through either momentum or entry hazards.
