With Will-O-Wisp, Ninetales is able to weaken physical attackers such as Kingambit, Zamazenta, and Dragonite. Solar Beam allows Ninetales to threaten the likes of Gastrodon, Quagsire, Barraskewda, and Rotom-W, which all resist its Fire-type STAB attacks. With Encore, Ninetales can force out passive Pokemon to create an opportunity to freely switch out into one of its teammates, as well as lock Pokemon like Baxcalibur and Iron Defense Zamazenta into their setup moves.

Setup sweepers such as Volcarona and Ceruledge are two of the biggest beneficiaries of Ninetales's sun, boosting their Fire-type STAB moves to great levels.
