Ninjask (Gen 4)*

Status: Done, awaiting edits and debate.

[Overview]

Ubers

Surprisingly, Ninjask performs better in Ubers than in OU, due to the preponderance of Psychic- and Dark-types and the lack of dedicated phazers in the former tier. However, using Ninjask does come with its share of problems: if the opponent sends in Groudon or Lugia, you'll definitely be starting the match off on the wrong foot, so your team should be able to handle them. But otherwise, you'll be surprised at how easy it is to pass to a sweeper and potentially run through an opponent. With some planning, carefulness, and a bit of luck, Ninjask can be a real asset to your support-oriented team.

[SET]
name: Ubers Lead
move 1: Substitute
move 2: Swords Dance / Quick Attack / Protect
move 3: X-Scissor
move 4: Baton Pass
item: Liechi Berry / Leftovers
ability: Speed Boost
nature: Jolly
evs: 226 Atk / 108 Def / 176 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

While Ninjask is often bashed for its alleged uselessness in OU, it finds a unique niche in Ubers as a lead. This bug is able to pass Speed (and maybe even Attack) boosts to sweepers such as Dialga and Rayquaza far more easily than it can in OU for a number of reasons. For one, all Ubers Taunt users, being Psychic- or Dark-type, are 2HKOed by X-Scissor, meaning that Taunting Ninjask is risky. For another, there are only 3 commonly seen phazers in Ubers: Groudon, Latias, and Lugia. Latias is 2HKOed by X-Scissor, and the others are easy to set up on by Taunt users of your own.

The first move you should use is Substitute, unless facing a Deoxys-S or Mew lead; use X-Scissor instead on their expected Taunt. The only move that is up for debate is the move in the second slot. Swords Dance can be used if a switch or a support move is predicted, and it can potentially result in a sweep. Quick Attack may seem gimmicky, but the combination of Substitute, X-Scissor, and Quick Attack lets you kill off standard Deoxys-A leads and still have +1 Attack and +3 Speed (if a Liechi Berry is used) to pass to a sweeper. However, the standard Deoxys-A lead is setup fodder for a Rayquaza or Groudon, so if you have such a Pokemon on your team, Quick Attack may be redundant. Finally, Protect can be used to help you outpace and defeat TrickScarf Darkrai leads by setting up a Substitute, and gain Leftovers recovery.

Liechi Berry guarantees that you will pass at least one Attack boost to a sweeper, while Leftovers is a reliable choice to help you set up more Substitutes and pass off more Speed. The EVs for this set are very carefully chosen. 108 Defense EVs ensures that an Extremespeed from Lead Rayquaza and Deoxys-A max out at 74.90%, meaning that you can put up a Substitute and Baton Pass away +1 Attack and +1 Speed (and give your sweeper a crucial free switch-in), more if you have Protect. 176 Speed lets you outspeed Deoxys-A leads, and 226 Attack EVs ensure that every Taunt user is 2HKOed by X-Scissor.

Ninjask works very well on support-oriented "Baton Pass" teams, which are often filled with Taunt users to cover for Ninjask's weaknesses against Groudon and Lugia. Good support Pokemon to use alongside Ninjask include the blisteringly fast Dual Screen Mewtwo and a Pure Baton Pass Mew, both of whom can work well to set up a sweep later. Deoxys-S remains an excellent choice to set up entry hazards, as does Forretress, who can also Rapid Spin. The primary recipients of Ninjask's boosts should be sweepers capable of running through the Ubers tier, such as Dialga, Rayquaza, and Groudon. Dialga is recommended due to its excellent typing, and Rayquaza due to its fantastic offensive power. Groudon is another solid choice, but is often overshadowed by the former two.

[SET]
name: Focus Sash
move 1: Swords Dance
move 2: Protect
move 3: X-Scissor
move 4: Baton Pass
item: Focus Sash
ability: Speed Boost
nature: Jolly
evs: 252 Atk / 6 Def / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

This set takes a risky approach to support the team, but if it is successful, the results can be game-breaking. You can potentially pass +2 Attack and +2 Speed to your recipient, who can then easily sweep the opposition. However, this set is more easily stopped by priority and status than the first set due to the lack of Substitute, so you will need to play carefully, especially if you choose to run this set as a lead.

On Ninjask's first turn in, you should use Swords Dance while the opponent attacks, using Baton Pass afterwards. If you are facing something faster, such as a scarfed Shaymin-S, you should use Protect first to ensure that the opponent doesn't get lucky with a flinch from Air Slash. Then use Swords Dance and pass to a recipient that can handle the attacks being thrown your way. If you anticipate that your opponent has multiple phazers (likely the case on a stall team), avoid using Ninjask until said phazers are neutralized, either by fainting them or using Taunt.

In terms of recipients, the partners for this set mirror those of the first set. However, this set also benefits from a fast Taunt user that forces the opponent to attack, rather than use Taunt, a status move, or a phazing move. Taunt also shuts down Stealth Rock, which breaks your Focus Sash if it is on the field. Therefore, a Deoxys-S lead is a perfect partner for this set, as it has the fastest Taunt in the game. Once it dies, hopefully after setting up entry hazards, Ninjask can enter the field and proceed to Swords Dance and use Baton Pass without fear.

[Team Options]

Ubers

Ninjask really despises having to deal with Stealth Rock, so if you use him outside the lead position, consider Forretress or a lead that can reliably preventStealth Rock from being put up or get rid of them, such as Choice Scarf Darkrai, Choice Scarf Shaymin-S, or Rapid Spin Cloyster.

Ninjask will often be seen on teams that use Dual Screens and Baton Pass. Pokemon such as a Dual Screen Mewtwo and a Pure Baton Pass Mew are staples of such teams for their blistering Speed and access to Taunt to shut down stall teams, which often have many phazing moves. In the midgame, a Pokemon such as Deoxys-S or Forretress is a great choice to set up entry hazards, ensuring that another one of your sweepers can finish off the opponent's team. Wobbuffet can be a great teammate due to its ability to help Ninjask get a free turn of setup.

But the most important Pokemon to pair with Ninjask is the recipient itself. As mentioned, Dialga, Rayquaza, and Groudon all work superbly, and the use of a Lum Berry on the former two is recommended to block Thunder Wave attempts by players using a lead Kyogre or the like. Groudon also works well with a Lum Berry in case the opponent has a Physically Defensive Mewtwo with Will-O-Wisp. The receivers mentioned can easily boost their stats in the event that they get such an opportunity. Finally, Palkia is a solid choice for a recipient due to possessing STAB Water- and Dragon-type moves, base 100 Speed, and typing that lets it take Surfs and Water Spouts from Kyogre.

[Optional Changes]

Ubers

Other than the aforementioned sets, there is little that Ninjask can do. As a Choice Bander or Life Orb user, it has very poor coverage, relying on Dig to hit Steel-types such as Dialga. You could try a Choice Scarf set, but Ninjask, who is faster than Team Rocket and the speed of light, can't make good use of it.

[Counters]

Ubers

Groudon and Lugia stop Ninjask from Baton Passing anything due to Roar or Whirlwind. Giratina also has access to the phazing move, but it rarely carries it. Wobbuffet can force Ninjask to Baton Pass lest it be Encored.

Scizor is a great priority user, but if you have to switch it in, then the Ninjask player has a free Substitute, and can Sub down before passing to Dialga, Palkia, or Groudon, which can be deadly. Other than that, ExtremeSpeed users are a good idea, but lead Ninjasks are EV'd to deal with ExtremeSpeed, so you'll need prior damage on it to succeed.

Trick Room makes Ninjask fairly useless, to say the least, but requires a team built around it to succeed.

Other than that, you can Explode on or attempt to cripple Ninjask's recipient in some way, but this takes prediction, and if you switch, you may have given the Ninjask user a free turn, which is never a good idea. In short, you should seek to apply pressure on Ninjask and deal with the recipient if you don't have any surefire ways to stop the bug.

Here are my logs and the team I used to test Ninjask. Oh man, Lum Berry Outrage is downright bitchin'. In general, its pretty obvious that I love Lum Berry on my sweepers to block TWave and ensure that I don't die to Life Orb recoil. If you want to try this out, go ahead, and you can run Forry over DX-E if Groudon and Stealth Rock are that much of a pain.

Now for the logs. Again, I did face a few Groudon (but no Darkrai...although we all know that Ninjask can pass against them), but I didn't see a point in putting up the logs. I mean, what I did in each of those situations was switch to Mewtwo. And we all know that you have to switch when you see Groudon, so it does us no good to see Ninjask switch. However, I do face off against a variety of leads, such as Deoxys-S, Deoxys-A, Kyogre, Rayquaza, Metagross, and Dialga, so rest assured that there was no cherrypicking.

This shows the magic of my EV spread: living the Extremespeed and sweeping with Rayquaza. It didn't matter that the opponent used Taunt while I used Swords Dance, because ExSpeed was a 3HKO, meaning that had he used ExSpeed, I would have had 16% health while sweeping rather than 58%. Also, either the Lugia didn't have Whirlwind, or my opponent thought he could kill me off with Extremespeed, to explain why he didn't put in Lugia upon first seeing Ninjask.

In this match (actually a rematch), I'm unfortunately outpredicted the first turn, and my team really suffers against his Thunder Waves. But I still get off screens, and sweep. Ninjask still 2HKOes the Deoxys-S lead, which is important.

Status: Done, awaiting edits and debate.

So you all (by "you all", I mean Theorymon and Aldaron) persuaded me to take a further look at the infamous bug on IRC. I built a team around it and built an updated Ninjask lead for the current Ubers meta. The suggestion of Quick Attack is credited to Theorymon.

On another note, I've got several logs against decent players so far with this set, but you may note that none of them have Groudon as an opposing lead. This is because there's no need to show such a log: we already know that Ninjask loses to support Groudons that have Roar.

[SET]
name: Ubers Lead
move 1: Substitute
move 2: Swords Dance / Quick Attack / Protect
move 3: X-Scissor
move 4: Baton Pass
item: Liechi Berry / Leftovers
ability: Speed Boost
nature: Jolly
evs: 226 Atk / 108 Def / 176 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

While Ninjask has often been bashed for its alleged uselessness in OU play, even being referred to as "Noobjask", it finds a unique niche in Ubers as a lead. This bug is able to complete its mission of passing Speed (and maybe even Attack) boosts to sweepers such as Dialga and Rayquaza far more easily than it can in Standard for a number of reasons. For one, all Ubers Taunt users, being Psychic- or Dark-type, are 2HKOed by X-Scissor, meaning that Taunting Ninjask is a shaky strategy to counter it. For another, there are only 3 commonly seen phazers in Ubers: Groudon, Latias, and Lugia. Latias is 2HKOed by X-Scissor as well, and Lugia and Groudon are very easy to set up on if you have Taunt users of your own.

The first move you should use is Substitute, unless faced with a Deoxys-S or Mew lead, in which case X-Scissor is the suggested strategy, seeing as a Taunt is expected. The only move that is up for debate is the move in the second slot. Swords Dance can be used if a support move or switch is predicted, potentially starting a sweep. Finally, Protect can be used to help you out pace and defeat TrickScarf Darkrai leads by setting up a Substitute [removed comma] and gain Leftovers recovery.

[removed] Liechi Berry is used to guarantee that you will pass at least one attack boost to a sweeper, while Leftovers is a reliable choice to help set up more Substitutes and pass off more Speed. [removed; unnecessary] The EV's for this set are very carefully chosen. 108 Defense EVs ensures that an Extremespeed from Lead Rayquaza and Deoxys-A max out at 74.90%, meaning that you can put up a Substitute and Baton Pass away at least +1 Attack and +1 Speed (giving your sweeper a crucial free switch-in) [removed]. 176 Speed lets Ninjask to out speed Deoxys-A leads, and 226 Atk is enough to ensure that every Taunt user is 2HKOed by X-Scissor.

Ninjask works very well on support-oriented "Baton Ass" teams, which are often filled with Taunt users to cover [removed] Ninjask's weaknesses against Groudon and Lugia. Good support Pokemon to use alongside Ninjask include the blisteringly fast Dual Screen Mewtwo and a Pure Baton Pass Mew, both of whom can work well to set up a sweep later. Deoxys-S remains an excellent choice to setup entry hazards, as does Forretress, who can use Rapid Spin. The primary recipients of Ninjask's boosts should be sweepers capable of running through the Ubers tier, such as Dialga, Rayquaza, and Groudon. Dialga is recommended due to its excellent typing; Rayquaza due to its fantastic offensive power. Groudon is another solid choice, but is often overshadowed by the former two.

[Team Options]

Ninjask really dispises [disdains has a different connotation] having to deal with Stealth Rock, so if you are using him outside the lead position, it is worth considering [removed] Forretress or a lead that can reliably prevent Stealth Rock from going up such as a Scarf Darkrai or Scarf Skymin. Other than that, there isn't much else to say, as Ninjask couldn't care less about the Sun and Rain that run through the Ubers tier. [removed]

Ninjask will often be seen on teams that favor the use of Dual Screens and Baton Pass. Pokemon such as a Dual Screen Mewtwo and a Pure Baton Pass Mew are staples of such teams, for their blistering speed and access to Taunt to shut down stall teams, which often have many phazing moves. In the midgame, a Pokemon such as Deoxys-S or Forretress is a great choice to set up entry hazards, ensuring that another one of your sweepers can finish off the foe. Even Wobbuffet can be used alongside Ninjask to help it get a free turn [removed].

But the most important Pokemon to pair with Ninjask is the recipient itself. As mentioned, Dialga, Rayquaza, and Groudon all work superbly, and the use of a Lum Berry [removed] is recommended to block Thunder Wave attempts by players using a lead Kyogre or Will-O-Wisp from a Physically Defensive Mewtwo. [removed] The aforementioned receivers [removed] can easily boost their stats in the event that they get such an opportunity.

[Other Options]

A Focus Sash set is theoretically viable, but Ninjask will often be making better use of Substitute to get potent sweepers in for free. Other than that, there is very little that Ninjask has any use for. As a Choice Bander or Life Orb user, it has very poor coverage, relying on Dig to hit Steel-types such as Dialga. [removed; does not help the reader at all]

[EVs]

For reasons listed above, the given spread is optimal for the current lead environment, but there are other options. If you want to outspeed scarfed base 90 Pokemon, such as Dialga, Kyogre, and Ho-oh, without any boosts, simply allocate 252 EVs to Speed [removed] from Defense.

[Opinion]

Ninjask is a gamble. If you run up against Groudon or Lugia, you'll definitely be starting the match off on the wrong foot, so your team should be able to handle them. [removed] Otherwise, you'll be surprised at how easy it is to pass to a sweeper and run through an opponent. With some planning, caution, and a bit of luck, Ninjask can prove to be a real asset to any support-oriented team.

[Counters]

Groudon and Lugia stop Ninjask from Baton Passing anything due to Roar. Giratina also has access to the phazing move, but it rarely carries it. Wobbuffet can force Ninjask to Baton Pass, lest it be Encored.

Scizor is a great priority user, but be careful while using it. If you have to switch it in, then the Ninjask player has a free Substitute, and can Sub down before passing to Dialga, Palkia, or Groudon, which can be deadly. Other than that, Extremespeed users are a good idea, but lead Ninjasks are EV'd to deal with Extremespeed, so you'll need prior damage on it to succeed.

Trick Room makes Ninjask fairly useless, to say the least, but requires a team built around it to succeed.

Other than that, you can Explode on or attempt to cripple Ninjask's recipient in some way, but this takes planning. If you switch, you may have given the Ninjask user a free turn, which is never a good idea. In short, you should seek to apply pressure to Ninjask and then deal with the recipient if you don't have any surefire way to stop the bug.

I noticed you used 'you' quite a lot. I don't know if it is allowed or not, but it would read better if you substituted third person pronouns in their place, or just change the sentence structure so that it can be omitted.

I'm pretty sure its allowed. I checked other people's analyses, like diinbong's Skarmory, and they have the use of 'you' throughout the work. Other than that, thanks for editing it.

You can't go wrong with either. The EV's for this set are very carefully chosen. 176 Speed lets you outspeed Deoxys-A leads, and 226 Attack is enough to ensure that every Taunt user is 2HKOed by X-Scissor.

Ninjask works very well on support-oriented "Baton Pass" teams, which are often filled with Taunt users to cover for Ninjask's weaknesses against Groudon and Lugia. Good support Pokemon to use alongside Ninjask include the blisteringly fast Dual Screen Mewtwo and a Pure Baton Pass Mew, who can work well to set up a sweep later. Deoxys-S remains an excellent choice to setup entry hazards, as is Forretress, who can use Rapid Spin.

[Team Options]

Ninjask really disdains having to deal with Stealth Rock, so if you are using him outside the lead position, its worth considering a Forretress or a lead that can reliably prevent Stealth Rock from going up, like a Scarf Darkrai or Scarf Skymin. Other than that, there isn't much to say, as Ninjask couldn't care less about the Sun and Rain that run through the Ubers tier, although the recipients might be concerned about it.

Ninjask will often be seen on teams that favor (does Smogon use favor or favour?)the use of Dual Screens and Baton Pass. Pokemon such as a Dual Screen Mewtwo and a Pure Baton Pass Mew are staples of such teams for their blistering speed and access to Taunt to shut down stall teams, which often have many phazing moves. In the midgame, a Pokemon such as Deoxys-S or Forretress is a great choice to set up entry hazards to ensure that another one of your sweepers can finish off the foe. Even Wobbuffet can be used alongside Ninjask to help it get a free turn midgame.

But the most important Pokemon to pair with Ninjask is the recipient itself. As mentioned, Dialga, Rayquaza, and Groudon all work excellently, and the use of a Lum Berry on the former two is recommended to block Thunder Wave attempts by players using a lead Kyogre or the like. Groudon also works well with a Lum Berry in case the opponent has a Physically Defensive Mewtwo with Will-O-Wisp. Not to forget that the receivers mentioned can easily boost their stats in the event that they get such an opportunity.

You could try a Choice Scarf set, but Ninjask, who is faster than Team Rocket and the speed of light, can't make very (remove)good use of it.

[EVs]

For reasons listed above, the given spread is an optimal spread for the current lead environment, but you have other options. If you want to outspeed scarfed base 90 Pokemon, such as Dialga, Kyogre, and Ho-oh, without any boosts, simply allocate 252 EVs to Speed, which can be shifted there from Defense.

[Opinion]

Ninjask is a gamble. If you run up against Groudon or Lugia (remove, as hardly anyone leads with Lugia), you'll definitely be starting the match off on the wrong foot, so your team should be able to handle them. But otherwise, you'll be surprised at how easy it is to pass to a sweeper and run through an opponent. With some planning, carefulness, and a bit of luck, Ninjask can prove to be a real asset to your support-oriented team.

[Counters]

Groudon and Lugia stop Ninjask from Baton Passing anything due to Roar. Giratina also has access to the phazing move, but it rarely carries it. Wobbuffet can force Ninjask to Baton Pass lest it be Encored.

Other than that, you can Explode on or attempt to cripple Ninjask's recipient in some way, but this takes planning, and if you switch, you may have given the Ninjask user a free turn, which is never a good idea. In short, you should seek to apply pressure to Ninjask and then deal with the recipient if you don't have any surefire ways to stop the bug.

Good write-up. Not much to say about it.

Thank you both. I've reviewed and implemented your edits, and will be contacting moderators probably later today on IRC.

You know Theorymon, I think this is alright to thrw on site. It's been sitting here for a while. I'll give it a 24 hour wait before objections arise (or like 18 but you get the point).

I think Swords Dance Groudon deserves special mention as a recipient, as +2/+2 Adamant Groudon with LO can OHKO almost everything in the Tier, except for Giratina (who will end up with like 12%) max/max Forretress (not used), and Skarmory (rarely used). It's not that hard to pull off either, as long as you can get him in on a physical attack or a pokemon that will need to switch once he shows up. Sub CM Kyogre is another recipient I use frequency to good effect, being able to set up on Blissey and subsequently rape the whole team (though Quagsire and Latias still give it trouble). The other advantage of Kyogre is that his main counter (Latias) is revenge killed by Ninjask, which offers a good transition into a second pass.

I mentioned Groudon already.
As mentioned, Dialga, Rayquaza, and Groudon all work superbly
I'm iffy on Sub/CM Ogre, simply because if you use Wobbuffet support and get up a Substitute, you've arguably done better. Sub/CM Ogre enjoys a free turn more than extra speed, IMO.

I remember you testing Garchomp with Ninjask. Could you please mention him in team options, even if he may be a lesser option compared to the others?

Liechi Berry is used to guarantee that you will pass at least one Attack boost to a sweeper, while Leftovers is a reliable choice to help you set up more Substitutes and pass off more Speed. [Team Options]

This set takes a risky approach to supporting the team, but if it is successful, the results can be game breaking. You can potentially pass +2 Attack and +2 Speed to your recipient, who can then easily sweep the opposition. However, this set is more easily stopped by priority and status than the first set due to the lack of Substitute, so you will need to play carefully, especially if you choose to run this set as a lead.

On Ninjask's first turn in, you should use Swords Dance while the opponent attacks, using Baton Pass after wards. If you are facing something faster, such as a scarfed Shaymin-S, you should use Protect first to ensure that the opponent doesn't get lucky with a flinch from Air Slash. Then you proceed to use Swords Dance and pass to a recipient that can handle the attacks being thrown your way. If you anticipate that your opponent has multiple phazers (likely the case on a stall team), it is inadvisable to use Ninjask until said phazers are cleared from the field.

Once it dies, hopefully after setting up entry hazards, Ninjask can enter the field and proceed to Swords Dance and use Baton Pass without fear of anything messing up the strategy.

once again it needs to be updated with the new changes..

Done. Also, I added in the Focus Sash set that was discussed in the Ubers forum thread. I tested it alongside a Deo-S lead, and it worked rather well (theoretically, it could also do well with a Taunt/ExSpeed Deo-A lead).

I guess this is ready to go on site.

The focus sash set has no set comments or there is no Team Options Paragraph separate from the focus sash set. I think it's a typo, but iirc, if ths is for Ubers, you need a team options section separate from all the other sets yes?

Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

Actually what happened was that when I was writing up the Focus Sash set, which was tested after the Lead, I accidentally deleted Team Options. Thanks to the "Edit History" feature of the forums, that's been fixed.
