You may remember last year that I made a thread about Morrowind, which I had started playing. Well, I'm still playing Morrowind! But I managed to get my fiance interested in western RPGs (I reckon that makes me somewhat evil), and she asked me what was a good starting point for someone who has never played western RPGs before. I think Morrowind is a bit complex for someone who has neither played western RPGs nor 3d games aside from Mario 64 before, so I recommended Oblivion.

I was installing the Game of the Year edition along with some mods, and I was wondering if anyone here besides me owns it or plays it and, if you do, what do you do with the game in terms of modding? So far I picked up the following stuff:

- Qarl's Texture Pack 3
- The unofficial patches
- Common Oblivion
- Quest Award Leveler
- Supreme Magicka

I debated installing OOO, but decided against it because from what I understand it makes the game significantly more difficult and, for someone who has never played a western RPG before, I think that's unacceptable. I also looked for a "Better Bodies" Oblivion version and found exactly one male body (which is extremely high-quality) by Robert and, like, fifty thousand female bodies. For someone used to a single "Better Bodies", this is more than a little bit annoying. Which female body replacer has the best support in terms of clothing and armor mods? I'd like to just install Robert's female body and get it over with because he is obviously an incredibly talented artist who creates amazing work, but I want to be sure the mod support is there before I do anything.

What mods do you guys use? Any suggestions to help someone that's new to the genre? I'm also considering nGCD to make the level-up process go away -- it was one of the things I disliked most about Morrowind; I used something called the Max Leveler there and I'd prefer to use that for someone new to the game -- does something like it exist in Oblivion?

On a mod creation note, I've done modding for Morrowind and, looking at Oblivion, it seems that Oblivion is such a nicer game to mod for. It just seems that so much more stuff is possible...and, with bad memories of Morrowind's very restricted scripting capabilities (that includes MWSE), that's a really nice thing. But it's more than just expanded scripting...stuff like X-Skills and Item Interchange -- these are modding tools that just weren't possible to do in Morrowind which have become possible in Oblivion, and they're incredibly awesome. Oblivion is just a more mod-able game, and I look forward to doing some modding work there eventually. (Right now I'm working on something in Morrowind that hasn't really been done in Morrowind before -- a player-owned mine.)

I'm trying TIE (Tamriel Immersion Experience) right now and I'm loving it. It's an overhaul mod that gears gameplay towards a stealth-based character such as enhanced sneaking. It also adds over 600 npcs including imperial bounty hunters, assassins, and tombraiders etc. It makes enemies tougher but usually you'll rely on your sneak skill and your surroundings to survive. It does some things that OOO does such as unlocking all enemies at the start. Also it is only a 3MB download compared to other overhaul mods which are over 1GB, in case you are concerned about download size.

I also recommend Reneer's Guard Overhaul as it improves the guards throughout the game including seperate bounties for different cities, disguises that act similar to the Gray Cowel of Nocturnal, and the guards won't chase you forever around Cyrodiil etc. No Psychic Guards is an alternative to Reneer's. I also use and recommend an alternative start mod and Bedrolls 1.1 which are neat but simple mods. Anyways I hope these recommendations help. Sorry but I don't know much about body replacers but I'm sure you can find mods such as those on TES Nexus.

I actually see the 1GB+ downloads as a strength -- that's a lot of new content in terms of meshes that go with new weapons, armor, etc etc. That said, I'm considering trying out FCOM.

Yeah that's true but sometimes I really don't need all that extra content. I don't go for those really big downloads because my hard drive sucks, though. And I agree that the original leveling system in both Morrowind and Oblivion sucks. I didn't mind it at first, but going after those +5 attribute modifiers got annoying after playing those games so many times.

For mods, I just usually look here. This has everything you need to know about scripting and console commands for not only Oblivion, but the other ES games, as well.

That site doesn't contain much information about actual published mods, just about the various functions available in vanilla scripting (does UESP even have a page on OBSE for example?).
