new money
Hey guys, welcome to my first RMT EVAR! (Or post, for that matter…) I'm migzoo, better known as +migzootwo. NU has been my favorite/best tier for quite some time now, so I thought I'd share my most favorite/best team. I've been using this team for quite a long time now, back in the days when PO was still king and Showdown spit out error messages after every battle. (JK don't hate me Cathy/Zarel) I stopped using the team during that weird period on PO when I think Zangoose and/or Gardevoir was kicked out of NU. Or maybe it was Golurk? Anyhow, this team has gotten me a great deal of success, peaking at 8 on the Showdown ladder before the reset. No I don't have screenshots, so take my word for it. But I couldn't for the life of me get past #8, so suggestions/comments are welcome. Anyways here it is: NU Offense by migzoo.

Ampharos.png

Ampharos @ Choice Specs
Trait: Static
EVs: 40 HP / 252 SAtk / 216 Spd
Modest Nature

- Volt Switch
- Thunderbolt
- Focus Blast
- Hidden Power [Ice]

One of the staples of this team from the very beginning, bespectacled Ampharos. Ampharos is bulky enough to live pretty much anything not super-effective, then do massive damage. With Choice Specs, Thunderbolt is capable of OHKOing every offensive threat that doesn't resist it. I've messed around with the speed EVs a little bit, so that it can outspeed offensive Piloswine, which it OHKOs with Focus Blast. Focus Blast also KOs Regice after rocks, who would otherwise take special attacks with relative ease. Unfortunately, even with glasses Ampharos' poor vision causes it to often miss Focus Blasts. Even with 216 EVs, Ampharos is slower than most offensive threats, which is helpful because it can Volt Switch out to Zangoose and activate its Toxic Orb. If Volt Switch doesn’t kill, Zangoose can usually finish the job. Ever since Swellow and Braviary dropped down, having a bulky electric type has become a valuable commodity. Static is nice for the odd paralysis after switching into Brave Birds, Fake Outs, and U-turns, and has saved me from losing more than once.

gardevoir.png

Gardevoir @ Choice Specs
Trait: Trace
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Modest Nature

- Psychic
- Focus Blast
- Thunderbolt
- Signal Beam

Yes, another pair of Choice Specs. Psychic destroys things even harder than Ampharos’ Thunderbolt. Gardevoir and Ampharos function similarly to Double *insert type* cores, in that they are both strong special attackers and one can whittle down/obliterate their common checks/walls. The unique part of this core is that they are both Choice Specs. Although speed may appear to be an issue, this is covered by their teammates and their respectable bulk. Trace is nice mainly for the ever-common Regenerator and Chlorophyll/Swift Swim. I am considering switching Timid for Modest because Gardevoir is being outsped by Timid Ludicolo in the rain, even after Trace. Another thing is Signal Beam versus Shadow Ball. I prefer Signal Beam for a reliable way to hit Dark types, but Shadow Ball has slightly higher base power and kills offensive Golurk. Skuntank can be an issue, so I often double switch into Armaldo or Ampharos when my opponent predicts me to Psychic. As a side note, I ran Specs Exeggutor in the first version of this team, but Gardevoir is so much better because of extra speed and Trace.

2ymycdf.jpg

Armaldo @ Leftovers
Trait: Swift Swim
EVs: 128 HP / 252 Atk / 112 Def / 16 Spd
Adamant Nature

- Stealth Rock
- X-Scissor
- Rock Blast
- Rapid Spin

90% of the reason Armaldo is on the team is for Stealth Rock and Rapid Spin. Rapid Spin is nice because I am constantly switching out my choiced pokemon, and preserving Sawk’s Sturdy is very important. Stealth Rock has increased in importance with the popularization of the Tangela/Alomomola/Regice core, since Ampharos/Gardevoir wreck Tangela and Alomomola as long as Regice out of the picture. X-Scissor with max attack hits hard, as does Rock Blast. X-Scissor is the STAB of choice, and 2HKOs Musharna. Rock Blast can often surprise Ninjask, Sub Haunter, and anything with a Sash. EVs give Armaldo a Stealth Rock friendly HP number, and enough speed to outrun standard Altaria when rain is up, as well as fellow support Armaldo.

4KmIc.png

Sawk (M) @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Sturdy
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature

- Close Combat
- Ice Punch
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge

The scarfer. The fastest Pokemon on the team in normal conditions. If Sawk has Sturdy intact and Zangoose is still around, it is very difficult for the opponent to sweep. I prefer Sturdy over Mold Breaker because I feel it has been much more useful than the occasional Earthquake hitting a Levitator. Granted, this makes Haunter, Weezing, and Sturdy Pokemon more of an issue, but as of now I am using Sturdy. This set is pretty much self-explanatory. I used to run Reversal, but I rarely used it. When Primeape dropped, I tried it out for the extra speed and U-turn, but I missed the extra power and Sturdy. Sawk and Gardevoir work pretty well together, although Misdreavus poses a threat to the two.

zangoose.jpg

Zangoose @ Toxic Orb
Trait: Toxic Boost
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature

- Close Combat
- Facade
- Night Slash
- Quick Attack

In the late-game, I usually find either Sawk or Zangoose sweeping, but Zangoose can easily break walls too. Facade razes cities. With Toxic Boost activated, Quick Attack usually kills Jynx after Stealth Rock. I used to run Adamant, but I was being outsped by too many things. Jolly is nice. Unfortunately, Zangoose is frail and gets worn down quickly. I tried Swellow for a little bit, also for the extra speed and U-turn, but with a Flying typing and no Close Combat, Rock was a big issue. Also, Zangoose is my favorite Pokemon.

ludicolo.png

Ludicolo @ Life Orb
Trait: Swift Swim
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 SAtk / 4 HP
Modest Nature

- Rain Dance
- Hydro Pump
- Giga Drain
- Ice Beam

The newest addition to the squad. For a long time this spot was occupied by Rock Polish Golurk (Dynamic Punch/Earthquake/Stone Edge) but my team was very weak to Ground and Water types, mainly other Golurks. Golurk had more lead sweeping potential and was Dynamic Punch made it a better lead in general, but I found myself sacrificing a pokemon everytime my opponent had a Golduck or Golurk. Ludicolo handles Golduck, Golurk, and Golem without hassle, so my team is no longer as Gol-weak. For some reason Ludicolo rarely ends up cleaning up. This set is nice in that I have beaten most opposing Ludicolo. Funnily enough, I have never come across a situation in which Armaldo took advantage of the rain that Ludicolo set up. My irl friend (+Sevvv) used this team with success as well, winning a Voice NU tourney with it. Instead of using Ludicolo, he switched out Life Orb/Rock Polish for Choice Band. Banded Golurk takes out other Golurk with ease, but Water types are still a problem and four choiced Pokemon is a bit much. +NU Moon suggested I use Rain Dance Seismitoad, but I chose Ludicolo for the Grass neutrality and Ground resistance.

Weaknesses (In decreasing order of threat):

Offensive Scolipede: Its speed and versatile movepool were the reason why it was RU and the reason why it’s such a threat to this team. Scolipede can outspeed and kill Gardevoir, Ludicolo, and Zangoose with Megahorn. Earthquake hurts Ampharos a lot. Armaldo can live unboosted Aqua Tail or Rock Slide, but it might not kill with Rock Blast. Sawk might miss Stone Edge.

Banded Sawk: Ouch. Worst case scenario is Jolly Banded with Sturdy. Gardevoir is outsped, and can’t OHKO, and is 2HKOed by Close Combat in return.

Standard Skuntank: The most annoying Dark type for Gardevoir, because of Pursuit and Sucker Punch. I’ve gotten better at mind games/predicting, but I can’t freely Psychic as long as it’s around. Without Ampharos or Zangoose, this team cannot handle the Weezing Skuntank core.

Sub Jynx: Lovely Kiss is bad, since switching in a poisoned Zangoose is dangerous. I have no Ice resistance. Scarf Jynx is also a threat, but not as much so.

Annoying Liepard: Because hax. I hate Liepard with a passion, a sentiment which I have periodically interjected into the main chat.

Scarfed Tauros: Maybe it was just this one team, but I lost to the same person twice in a day. Tauros outspeeds my entire team, and can sweep with Double-Edge if Armaldo is gone.

Aqua Jet: Basculin and moreover, Floatzel, can sweep my team if Ludicolo is gone. Floatzel can take advantage of Ludicolo’s rain, or simply wreak havoc with Life Orb or Choice Band.

Standard Misdreavus: It can burn all my physical attackers, dent Gardevoir with Shadow Ball, and outspeed Ampharos. It blocks Armaldo’s spin, which could mean Sawk’s Sturdy being broken. It is immune to Sawk and Zangoose’s STABs. 2HKOed by Gardevoir’s Psychic and Ampharos’ Thunderbolt though.

Protect: With so many choice users, Protect is bad. Protect is worse on Stall teams, because it forces me to double switch, and thus take damage from hazards. Protect is even worse on teams with a Dark type and a Ground type, since I can’t just fire away Psychics and Thunderbolts. Protect is annoying on Alomomola, when paired with Regice and Tangela. As stated earlier, I need Stealth Rock for those teams to wear down Regice.

Custap Golem: The Stealth Rock user that makes it hardest for Armaldo to spin.

CM Musharna: If I’m locked in on Psychic, it Calm Minds as I switch to Armaldo or Zangoose. I outspeed and do over half with X-Scissor/Facade, but it can KO in return with +1 Psychic with a little bit of prior damage.

Well, I was going to post a very similar Team in a week, but I guess now I will not. Instead, I shall review your team right here. It isn't a bad team. It's got a great powerful offensive core going, but I can truly see it struggling in defense. SpecsPharos is so underrated, but it truly hits like a truck. The first problem I see though, is Gardevoir being choiced. On a team like this, your most versatile pokemon does not want to be locked in, as it can be forced to switch by simple things, which can potentially ruin your momentum. The next large problem I am seeing is Armaldo, who a) Really isn't that good at setting up rocks, b) Gives rapid spin support to a team who finds rocks to be the least of their worries, and c) Doesn't put defensive or offensive pressure in unison with the rest of the team maybe excluding Ludicolo, although since Armaldo is your lead, and Ludi is your cleaner, I don't see going together either.

Gardevoir:
Gardevoir has always been one of my favorite pokemon. I will give it to you, that Specs Gardevoir is easily the hardest hitting psychic in the entire metagame maybe excluding Jynx and Kadabra, both of which are outclassed in bulk. However, this team truly requires Gardevoir to hit hard no matter what the circumstance, which requires you to have the freedom to switch moves. Because of this, I suggest the Life Orb set, which while is the most versatile and effective set, rarely sees use. In order to pull this off, we will be replacing the Specs with a Life Orb, and Destiny Bond over Focus Blast. This allows us to still maintain consistent power, and still switch freely. This will also be your skuntank counter, as you can Destiny Bond to nab the kill from the pursuit.

Armaldo Regirock:
The two things which are removing armaldo from the standings are that it is giving rapid spin support to a team who does fine without it, and probably does better without it due to less wasted time. However, this team does require Sheer Bulk as well as some form of Status support. As of now, not a single member on your team can status any pokemon. For that reason, we will be choosing Regirock. While it is not the most common stealth rocker, it outclasses all the rest in sheer bulk, yet can still hit hard. We will be choosing the set with Stealth Rock | Rock Slide | Drain Punch | Thunder Wave. Your team loves T-Wave like nothing else. Being able to outspeed means we can truly make Ampharos and Gardevoir shine. Stealth Rocks are mandatory, and Rock Slide and Drain Punch round off your coverage, potentially allowing you to ParaFlinch something to death if you must.

*Optional*
Zangoose Kangaskhan:
This change is truly a matter of opinion. It's just my thought that a pokemon on a timer really isn't helping this team, especially when faced with pokemon willing to chance walling you. IMO, every team needs a bit of priority, and I think Kangaskhan really brings it to the team, with a nice Fake Out which hits hard no matter what type you are. Double Edge can decimate foes, Sucker Punch brings even more priority to your team, allowing you to destroy sweepers with Fake Out / Sucker Punch. Finally, your choice is between EQ and Drain Punch, one of which hits hard, and the other helps recover a tad bit of health. In terms of an Item, we will be going with Silk Scarf or Leftovers, as 3 Life Orbers will wear this team down a bit to fast for comfortability.

Hiya, your team is quite good and there isnt much to rate about it. As Brawlfest said Gardevoir holding a specs isnt the best since Amphy already has it and your team would benefit having something else that isnt locked in. However:

Sock Scarf (it made me giggle) isnt really a good socker anymore. It doesnt break true much. Alomomola, Mandibuzz and Roselia take its hit with ease. Changing it to a band would not be effective since Amphy can already do a great wallbreaking job. Change Sawk to Pimeape, jolly natue with Close Combat, U-Turn Ice Punch/Stone Edge and Punishment. Punishment may seem odd but after 2-3 CM's Musharna can sweep your team easy. Maybe change Gardevoir to timid Jynx with Sub, Nasty Plot, Lovely Kiss and Ice Beam and Leftovers (its a great set, trust me).

Hope I helped, off to school now :]

Scarf Sawk is actually Really. Really. Good. It's not meant to wall break. Scarf Sawk is a revenge killer / sweeper, who is very hard to stop without a quicker scarfer who can take him out. However, if we are suggesting Scarf Primeape, Assurance > Punishment, because Assurance can 2HKO Musharna if you get it on the switch onto rocks.

Also, your Jynx set is good, but that's not exactly the point! This Gardevoir is meant to be a stallbreaker, while it doesn't destroy walls, it's meant to open holes for your team to attack. Mono-Attacking Jynx is more for a sweeper. This Specific Gardevoir is able to OHKO Alomomola without any boosts, and 2HKO Musharna and Wartortle. It's very strong.

To be 100% honest, I just don't see the reasons he needs to change these sets. Could you explain further? :)

First, note that Gardevoir and Ampharos fulfill pretty much the same role on this team, since both are extremely powerful specially based wallbreakers, especially when equipped with Choice Specs. As such, you should probably change one of them into something else.

And about wallbreaker Gardevoir, instead of running Specs, she could also run an Expert Belt.

Angel (Gardevoir) (F) @ Expert Belt
Trait: Trace
EVs: 252 SAtk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd
Timid Nature
- Psychic
- Thunderbolt
- Signal Beam
- Hidden Power [Ground]

It is still really good because it doesn't die to random priority like Jynx (bar Sucker Punch) and can wreak havoc against any team that is unprepared to take repeated extremely powerful hits.

Gardevoir can run Expert Belt better than Jynx or Kadabra because it has Thunderbolt, which they both lack, and it has slightly higher SpA, ensuring KO's it would otherwise not get. Life Orb is a possibility over Expert Belt if you like more consistent hitting power. Life Orb also nukes Skunk after Rocks, giving a chance to OHKO if the Skunk did not invest enough in HP/SDef.

The aforemented Life Orb set /w Destiny Bond is also really good, give it a spin. Specs Garde just isn't the way to play her, especially not alongside Specs Ampharos, and their roles clash in general since they are meant to do the same (Garde is just better at it).

Have a look at it, if Amphy works well for you as it is, keep it the same, but try Misdreavus, for example, in Ampharos' slot. You could also go with Life Orb on Ampharos and run Heal Bell on it, to mitigate your Misdreavus issues somewhat (and since it is your only support move, you aren't likely to lure in opposing Misdreavus with it).

Also, since Armaldo should be removed (IT SUCKS), I suggest Mold Breaker over Sturdy on Sawk.

My god. The power in this team makes me feel like jumping off a cliff in my own Pokemonz' inadequacy. I feel like I just took a Golurk DynamicPunch to the face, and Golurk isn't even on this team any more. It literally just wasn't strong enough. I mean, the Ampharos by itself is enough to zap my flaps. It's got more power in one of its ears than an average man sees in an entire lifetime. This team is too strong: by seeing the words "choice," "specs," and "Ampharos" in such close proximity to each other, we are no longer average men. How I miss being an average man.

I have nothing critical to say about this team, other than it's just too strong and Gardevoir is a boss. As other people have said, it might be worth a shot to try unSpecsing the Gardevoir, because it's just mean to hit people with Specs Psychics. By the way, anyone who sends their Pokemon into battle against this team clearly has no soul whatsoever, because if I saw people willing to let their Pokemon get smashed by Toxic Boost Facades I'd probably call animal abuse.

I'm probably going to get banned or something for this completely uninsightful post, so for my last words I'd like to quote Justin Bieber: "[Ampharos is] power power power... And I'm loving every second, minute, hour, bigger, better, stronger, POWER." Energy over time? This team's got plenty of that. In fact, it's got so much that I think I'll just go into a coma now. Goodbye, cruel world.

Thanks for the input, everyone! I am testing various different Gardevoir sets, and they are working fairly well. I will be testing Kangaskhan in lieu of Zangoose soon. I've tested scarf Primeape before, and I don't like it much. It lacks the power of Sawk, and U-turn/extra speed is just not necessary for this team. I'm not sure what to do about Armaldo vs. Regirock. I know Armaldo is garbage, but this team actually needs Rapid Spin more than typing would suggest. Although none of the five Pokemon are weak to rocks, they are all susceptible to all hazards, and Sawk's Sturdy has saved me on multiple occasions. Anyhow, I've been testing Regirock a bit, and I'll continue to juggle around some of these sets.
Also, I forgot to mention this earlier: Please feel free to test this team for yourselves, it's quite a fun team to use.

I have a couple different options you might want to try out.

If you're not willing to use Scarf Primeape, perhaps maybe you'd use Choice Band Primeape? Without Scarf, Primeape does lose some of its utility and revenge killing capabilities, but Choice Band makes Primeape hit extremely hard and Primeape has access to U-Turn, which can easily be used on a team like this to your advantage.

A lot of the Pokemon you have a problem with can simply be solved by using Misdreavous, plus Misdreavous is a great Skuntank lure. You could try Armaldo -> Misdreavous, and to keep Stealth Rock on the field and make a good defensive core, try Sawk -> Offensive Probopass. You lose a constant revenge killing option by getting rid of Sawk and Rapid Spin, but this team doesn't seem to have much problems with common Scarf Pokemon like Jynx and Electabuzz, while Rapid Spin wasn't really important to this team. Offensive Probopass will also keep the offensive pressure this team has and check a lot of stuff your team has trouble with.

Above all, my minor nitpick is that Sawk should be running an Adamant nature. This significantly increases his power and Sawk isn't really outspeeding anything important with a Jolly Nature (Ludicolo checks Gorebyss).
