Project NU Next Best Thing [Week 35: Gastrodon]

nasty plot + draining kiss

:bw/Mesprit:
Mesprit @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Draining Kiss
- Psychic
- Energy Ball

- Nasty Plot

Nasty Plot + Draining Kiss Mesprit can be run on offensive team structures like Aurora Veil, where it has an easier time to setup infront of other Pokemon with a Nasty Plot.
Draining Kiss hits dark-types like Sneasel, Absol, and the not so common Skuntak. Psychic is Mesprits Main-STAB and hits many foes in hte NU-tier. the Last slot is Energy Ball which hits bulky grounds and waters like Rhydon, Gastrodon, and Jellicent for immediate damage.
Its Item is Leftovers to grant Mesprit mor opportunities to either execute a setup or to have some more longevity in conjunction with its Move in Draining Kiss.

CB Trick Mesprit FTW
:ss/mesprit:
Mesprit @ Choice Band
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Zen Headbutt
- Knock Off/ Fire Punch
- U-turn
- Fire Punch/ Trick

Base 105 Physical Attack is pretty nice, so the idea of this set is to lure in special walls which usually come into special mesprit, and nuke them with a strong physical attack. Zen Headbutt is for STAB, Knock Off is extremely useful to remove Eviolites and Heavy Duty Boots and other annoying items, and Fire Punch is for annoying steel types like Escavalier and Sandslash Alolaslash. Alternatively you could run Fire Punch and Trick over Knock Off, to completely cripple a defensive Pokémon such as Quagsire or Vaporeon. Don’t run Trick and Knock because that’s just dumb in my opinion, but if you play it right it could work, just be wary. A cool lure set, no one expects a physical Mesprit, much less a Choice Banded one.

Choice Scarf Trick + Thunder Wave Mesprit
:ss/[Mesprit]:
Mesprit @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Psychic
- U-turn
- Trick
- Thunder Wave
Basically, you use Trick to lock a wall Pokémon into using one move. If you predict a switch after you use Trick on a wall Pokémon, you use Thunder Wave to cripple the Pokemon switching in. Psychic is STAB. U-Turn is for pivoting and gaining momentum.

Defensive Utility Mesprit

:ss/mesprit:
Mesprit @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 52 HP / 48 SpA / 156 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Toxic
- Psychic
- Fire Punch
- Substitute

The combination of toxic and fire punch allow mesprit to cripple most of his currents defensive sr sets switch-in ( :escavalier:,:sandslash-alola: (fire punch still ohko both 252 hp variants even with negative nature),:cofagrigus:,:porygon2: or :rotom:.
Substitute prevents being statused and allow mesprit to sit on passive threats who rely on toxic to threaten it (:gastrodon:,:lanturn:,:stunfisk-galar:,:porygon2:) and scout strong choiced mons (:drampa:,:exeggutor-alola:)
52 hp and 156 spd allow mesprit's sub to live surf from uninvested cramorant.
Psychic hits poisons who are immune to toxic,48 spa increases chances to 2hko 176 speed golbat.
Hasty nature can be runned to 2hko magneton with fire punch.

NP Magic Room

Mesprit @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Nasty Plot
- Psychic
- Dazzling Gleam
- Magic Room

Ever had to decide between running scarf or NP Mesprit? Well now you don't have to! Magic Room negates your scarf for 5 turns, letting you set up and up and up until it stops, and then you outspeed everything and win. It's preferably used on veil teams to maximize it's efficiency, but it's not limited there. Magic Room will also negate other scarfers, eviolite abusers, grassy seed shenanigans, etc shutting down opposing teams.

Offensive Future Sight Mesprit
:ss/[Mesprit]:
Mesprit @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Thunderbolt
- U-turn
- Ice Beam
- Future Sight

General idea
Here we have Mesprit as a pivot with BoltBeam coverage in order to have the maximum immediate coverage possible with just two slot and U-turn in order to keep the momentum.
Future Sight is picked over Psychic because it has extra power and can be used in front of targets immune or resistant to Psychic-type attacks that can be scared out with another teammate. Keep in mind that Future Sight is unexpected and almost nobody takes into account its arrival.

For example:
252 SpA Life Orb Mesprit Future Sight vs. 212 HP / 0 SpD Granbull: 331-391 (88.5 - 104.5%) -- 31.3% chance to OHKO

Cycle 9 - Spiritomb

:ss/Spiritomb:
Yes its coincidence that this Cycle's mon is one of my favorites!
Spiritomb established itself as one of the better Tauros checks and is also able to check threats like Espeon or Mesprit offensively. With many different techniques getting used in room tours and in snake draft im sure you guys will come up with something creative and useful!
Submissions will end on Saturday, November 28th! Happy posting everyone!

spite + protect pp-stall tomb

:dp/spiritomb:
Spiritomb @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Shadow Ball
- Protect
- Pain Split

- Spite

this spiritomb-set allows it to function as a great pp-staller.
this set works as follows: Spite is here to help pp stall in combination with pressure so it can reduce pps quickly and effectively. its set contains pain split to keep itself healthy during the long run and in conjunction with leftovers as well as protect it can do its job rather reliable over the course of the game. shadow ball is there as a stab move to hit a plethora of pokemon in the nu-tier for at least neutral damage.

Choice Banded Spiritomb

Spiritomb @ Choice Band
Ability: Infiltrator
EVs: 200 HP / 252 Atk / 56 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Poltergeist
- Trick / Memento
- Lash Out / Sucker Punch
- Shadow Sneak

The most standard of Spiritomb sets, Choice Band provides the spirit with decent breaking potential thanks to a new potent STAB move in Poltergeist. Furthermore, priority options in STAB Sucker Punch and Shadow Sneak allow the spirit to circumvent its extremely low base speed in a somewhat decent way. Moreover, access to utility options in Trick helps Spiritomb cripple common switch-ins such as Porygon2, while Memento allows for a teammate to setup with ease. Lash Out is also a STAB option that helps Spiritomb actually damage Porygon2 and other Normal-types reliably. Infiltrator is the ability of choice to bypass Substitute and Aurora Veil while the speed EVs allow it to outspeed common Mudsdale variants and min speed Rhydon.
