NU [nu] Torterra

Torterra @ Leftovers
Ability: Shell Armor / Overgrow
EVs: 152 HP / 104 Atk / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Wood Hammer
- Earthquake
- Synthesis

While Torterra doesn't quite carry the world on its back like the myths imply, it is still a helpful presence to several NU teams. Having both Stealth Rock and Synthesis lets it more reliably perform the role of a hazard setter, and it also puts a lot of pressure on other Stealth Rock setters like Steelix, Diancie, and Rhydon. On another note, Torterra is also a great check to a Pokémon surging in tournaments, Heliolisk, as Torterra blocks Volt Switch and Heliolisk can't afford to pack Hidden Power Ice too often, as it wants to hit Pokémon like Steelix and Decidueye. Specifically, the EV spread lets Torterra stomach two Hyper Voices from Choice Specs Heliolisk after Stealth Rock. Sneasel is a notable partner, as it can trap Xatu, which would otherwise prevent Torterra from setting up Stealth Rock. Speaking of Sneasel, Ice-resistant Pokémon that can tackle it and Vanilluxe, like Incineroar and Vaporeon, are great teammates for Torterra too!

I feel like in the current state of the metagame, it's more optimal to run enough Special Defense investment to allow Torterra to eat two uses of Hyper Voice from Choice Specs Heliolisk. That's the more common spread and likely should be updated in the analysis someday. This change to the spread also makes sense given the context of the replay you gave: eternally packing a Choice Specs Heliolisk that cannot (easily) break Torterra given its spread.

This is the necessary investment to switch into Hyper Voice with no risk of a 2HKO after Stealth Rock damage. I would also argue to run Shell Armor > Overgrow to avoid getting cheesed by a critical hit, although that isn't super necessary.

"Heliolisk can’t afford to pack Hidden Power Ice too often, as it wants to hit Pokémon like Steelix and Seismitoad." Change Seismitoad to something else, as it gets blown back by Choice Specs Hyper Voice unless you're that bad specially defensive spread.

I would argue Sneasel to be a Pokemon you should refer to as a partner for sure; trapping Xatu makes getting up Stealth Rock much easier for Torterra given its general inability to do a whole lot versus Xatu

Let me know over Discord when this is implemented, and I'll run by it again to make sure all is good :]

If you've got enough space left, mentioning like you did earlier that Ice-resistant Pokemon are good partners would be nice. Perhaps also mention Heliolisk's recent surge in tournament play as a big reason Torterra got better. 1/1

While Torterra doesn't quite carry the world on its back like the myths imply, it is still a helpful presence to several NU teams. Having both Stealth Rock and Synthesis is quite nice for Torterra, giving it some letting lets (not sure if some text was missing after "giving it some" though) it more reliably perform the role of a hazard setter, and it also puts a lot of pressure on other Stealth Rock setters like Steelix, Diancie, and Rhydon. On another note, Torterra is also a great check to a Pokémon surging in tournaments, (comma) Heliolisk, as Torterra blocks Volt Switch and Heliolisk can't afford to pack Hidden Power Ice too often, as it wants to hit Pokémon like Steelix and Decidueye. By the way, Specifically, the EV spread lets Torterra stomach two Hyper Voices from Choice Specs Heliolisk after Stealth Rock. Sneasel is a notable partner, (AC) as it can trap Xatu, who which would otherwise prevent Torterra from setting up Stealth Rock.
