NUw guy

So, this is my first team and it's an NU team, which doesn't seem to be too favoured amongst people, but I quite like the tier. I haven't thought of a name or anything and I'm not the type to try and do that, so I'll just go straight into it!

Lead
Primeape @ Choice Band
Ability: Vital Spirit
EVs: 6 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Nature: Adamant +Atk -Sp. Atk
- U-Turn
- Close Combat
- Ice Punch
- Earthquake

Primeape leads out and I chose it mainly because it’s the Pokemon with the best attack that can learn U-Turn, which is a move I generally open with. Close Combat is obviously for STAB bonus whilst Ice Punch can do a serious amount of damage to Pokemon not expecting it, thanks to the EVs and Nature favouring my attack. Earthquake is just another powerful attack, but not one I’ve really used so far.

I do fear Primeape is a bit slow and have considered changing the nature or perhaps going for Choice Scarf instead of Band. Primeape isn’t renowned for its ability to take hits so being slower can really damage me.

89.png

Special Wall
Muk @ Black Sludge
Ability: Stickyhold
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Sp.Def
Nature: Careful +Sp.Def -Sp.Atk
- Posion Jab
- Shadow Sneak
- Toxic
- Explosion

Muk has proven to be fantastic when coming in on special attackers, crippling them with Toxic and then taking their hits as the damage slowly increases. Shadow Sneak also offers the possibility to use Muk as a sort of revenge killer. Explosion is there for when things get a bit too messy (no pun intended) and it can be quite a surprise to people, unlike obvious exploders like Electrode.

Black sludge gets Muk’s health back, but I was thinking of perhaps using Trick instead of Poison Jab. Being a bit of a newbie, I’m not sure if Muk’s ability prevents me doing this, but it could certainly aid in stalling opponents, and they can’t even trick their item back thanks to my ability.

28.png

Spinner
Sandslash @ Leftovers
Ability: Sand Veil
EVs: 158 HP / 100 Atk / 252 Spe
Nature: Adamant +Atk -Sp. Atk
- X-Scissor
- Earthquake
- Stealth Rock
- Rapid Spin

Sandslash is quite a popular choice in NU and found his way into my team as a rapid spinner primarily. The HP EVs will hopefully help Sandslash survive a few hits, aided by his fairly good defence stats, so I can get one turn to rapid spin and perhaps another to attack or put up some stealth rocks, otherwise I’ll get the hell out of there.

Even with max EVs in speed, Sandslash is still dangerously slow, but appears to be the best rapid spinner option in NU, so I’ve gone with him. A speed boosting nature or a defensive one could be an option, but I generally scout a lot to ensure Sandslash is safe before switching in.

93.png

The Ghost
Haunter @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 Spe / 252 Sp. Atk / 4 Sp.Def
Nature: Timid +Spe -Atk
- Shadow Ball
- Thunderbolt
- Sucker Punch
- Destiny Bond

Gengar has always been a favourite of mine, so I went for his earlier stage, Haunter, but I’m not sure if I picked him because he’s a valuable addition or just because he’s cool! Haunter’s defences are dire; he really cannot take a hit. So, I went for a speed boosting nature, but Haunter’s speed is fairly good anyway. As everyone knows, Special Attack is hwere he thrives, and Shadow Ball and Thunderbolt take advantage of that. Destiny Bond is for when things look hopeless.

As for Sucker Punch, I’m not too sure about its inclusion. Gengar generally carries Focus Blast, which Haunter can’t use, so I had to find something else to use and I wasn’t quite sure what. A Hidden Power could be an option, but at times I wonder if I should just scrap Haunter. However, the ghost type is great to have and, even in NFE, Haunter is one of the best ghost types available in NU, not to mention his ability, levitate, further extending the range of Pokemon he can come in on.

Revenge Killer
Sharpedo @ Life Orb
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Nature: Adamant +Atk -Sp. Atk
- Aqua Jet
- Waterfall
- Crunch
- Earthquake

Sharpedo has gone from something I knew nothing about to becoming one of my favourites. Aqua Jet becomes a powerful move with all the bonuses it gets and can usually finish off a Pokemon, whilst a Waterfall or Crunch will certainly 1 or 2 hitKO most Pokemon. Earthquake I’m not so sure about considering many of my Pokemon carry Ground moves, but I have used it with some effect before.

I don’t really have a lot to say about the pedo, it’s a pretty standard, efficient set and has always worked well in my battles.

195.png

Defensive Staller
Quagsire @ Leftovers
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spe
Nature: Impish +Def -Sp. Atk
- Toxic
- Dig
- Recover
- Protect

And finally, the beast that is Quagsire. In the few battles I’ve had, he’s proven to be a real force to be reckoned with and, despite being awfulling boring, has taken down many Pokemon. The idea is to Toxic whatever is there, use a Protect, Dig and waste a turn underground, Protect again and then hopefully the opponent will be dead, not forgetting the damage Dig adds. Leftovers is healing me the entire time and Recover can be used when I’m looking a bit out of sorts.

I can’t really fault Quagsire. Obviously it wouldn’t do great against anything that can rest, but I can stall enough to find out whether they carry a berry for a once off wake up, whether they Sleep Talk or whether neither. The main threat is being poisoned and stalled myself, as I chose Recover over Rest purely because I don’t want to have to carry a berry/sleep talk.

Anyway, thanks for reading and hopefully you can take the time to suggest some improvements or tactics I can use! I’m sure there’s bound to be a few issues with my team. Also hopefully I've done all this right in terms of rules, I'm not amazingly hot on what's allowed and what's not, haha.

Well, I rated this mostly because it had to comments, but I do see a few flaws.

Primape: I see you considered changing the nature, and due to Primapes average speed, the best you can do is give it jolly. Moveset and nature look great though.

Muk: "Physical Wall
Muk @ Black Sludge
Ability: Stickyh..."
Muk is a special wall...probebly just a typo. I like the moveset and EVs.

Sandslash looks fine, but why not Stone Edge over X-Scizor? Rock + Ground provides that excellent coverage you want, only resisted by Torterra and I think something else.

Haunter looks good, just change the nature to Hasty or Naive so Sucker Punch isn't weaknend.

Sharpedo is flawless

Quagsire looks new. Dig to stall out Toxic Damage and leftovers? really good idea. Now that I think about it, Sandstorm would really help. It also activates SandSlash's Sand Veil. I would actually suggest replacing Primape (Your thrid Psychic weakness with only one super frail switch in the psychic moves) with Hippopatos. Sash it and use stealth rock, then you can give sandslash another awesome move :)

Hope I helped!

Ah thanks! I like what you've suggested.

Muk was indeed just a lapse in concentration, I've fixed it now

Hippopotas is an interesting idea... But, even scarfed, it's horribly slow so I'm not too sure about that... hmm.. I made up my own idea:

454.png

Suicide Lead?
Hippopotas @ Focus Sash
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe / 4 Sp.Atk
IVs: 0 HP / 0 Def / 0 Sp.Def
Nature: Jolly +Spe -Sp. Atk
- Yawn
- Protect
- Earthquake
- Stealth Rock

So basically, this thing is designed to be taken out in one hit on the first turn, but it survives that with Focus Sash. I then Yawn and Protect until they're asleep and can set up my Stealth Rocks. Earthquake can then do some damage until they wake up/faint. This seems quite idealistic, however, as the opponent could just switch after my yawn, nullifying my whole strategy. But hopefully the fact I'll have 1HP will tempt them into finishing me off, unbeknownst to them that I have Protect.

I didn't go for Stone Edge on Sandslash as I hate not having 100% accuracy; I always seem to miss. If I use this Hippo, then I could replace the Stealth Rock on with Stone Edge on Sandslash :)

As for who I'd replace... Primeape has won me a fair few battles, whereas I generally over-predict with Haunter and get killed. I'd like to keep Primeape, but then that'd leave me without a Special Attacker (Sharpedo, Primeape & Sandslash are all Attack focused), so I fear it'd have to be Primeape and I'd have to improve my Haunter strategy.

I think you're weak to bulky Waters, Psychics, and Bulky Grasses. You don't need to use Hippopotas as a lead, because your team doesn't really benefit sandstorm. I suggest you this:

207.png

Gligar @Lum Berry / Focus Sash
252 Atk/ 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
Hyper Cutter

-Earthquake
-Stealth Rock
-Stone Edge / U-turn
-Taunt

And I don't know why do you have a spinner if Muk already absorbs TS, you don't have a SR weakness and Spikes is very rare to be seen in NU, so I suggest replacing him with this:

310.png

Manectric @ Choice Specs / Choice Scarf
252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
Static

-Thunderbolt
-Overheat
-HP Grass
-Signal Beam

Manectric should cancel the Bulky Grass and Water Walls problem to you.

Sharpedo is also very nice, but if I were you, I would run a Sneasel in his place (for countering Espeon, Shiftry and Exeggutor).

Hope that you liked.

And I don't know why do you have a spinner if Muk already absorbs TS, you don't have a SR weakness and Spikes is very rare to be seen in NU
Good point, which is then contradicted by suggesting a flying Pokemon in Gligar?

I think you're weak to bulky Waters, Psychics, and Bulky Grasses.
I would have to disagree.

Haunter can take down/almost finish a water which can be revenge killed.
Sharpedo easily handles Psychics.
Grasses should be taken down by Ice Punch from Primeape.

Obviously Manectric's STAB Tbolt would deal with waters more efficiently, but I feel I am quite well covered here.

I took Sandslash out and went for a Lead Persian with the standard Fake Out & U-Turn

maybe you could swap quagsire for gastrodon
as it has access to stockpile which is great for stalling
below is my comparison of the two

Defensive Staller
Quagsire @ Leftovers- great item to regain health
Ability: Water Absorb - good ability but really noone is going to hit quagsire with a water attack
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spe- gastordon has better stats
Nature: Impish +Def -Sp. Atk
- Toxic- cripples foe
- Dig- provides free damage from toxic without yourself getting hit
- Recover- good recovery move
- Protect- provides free damage from toxic without yourself getting hit

Stockpile
Name gastrodon @Leftovers-great item to regain health
Nature Calm +SpD -Atk
Ability sticky hold- great ability as it means gastrodon can not be crippled by trick and switcheroo
EVs 252 HP / 212 Def / 44 SpD-better stats
Moveset
~ Stockpile -great defensive move 3 stockpiles and a grass move wont be able to touch you
~ Recover -good recovery move
~ Toxic -cripples foe
~ Surf - great STAB move

quagsire
-better movepool

gastrodon
-better ability
-access to stockpile
-better stats

Even with Gligar, your team won't be weak to SR because Gligar is Ground/Flying, so it takes neutral damage from rock.

Since you are using Haunter in NU, you may want to consider ditching Sucker Punch on Haunter for Sludge Bomb, and Destiny Bond for something like Hidden Power Ground or Explosion. Poison is a much better offensive type in NU, where the lack of Steel types really work in your favor (it also helps stop Meganium, who can screw your Stalling Quagsire over with Energy Ball/Seed Bomb/Aromatherapy). Also, if you are going to use an Adamant nature on Primeape, give it Choice Scarf to give it adequate speed to outpace the threatening pokes that sit in the base 100-115 range (i.e.- Dodrio, Jumpluff, Manetric, Tauros, Ninetales).

On Haunter I would recommend Subsitute + 3 Attacks, preferably Shadow Ball, Sludge Bomb, and HP Ground. STAB Sludge Bomb actually hits harder than Shadow Ball and HP Ground hits basically everything that resists Haunter's STAB.

You might want to fix Sandslash's EVs. I'm assuming it was probably a typo but still.

Quagsire's moveset is a bit meh. Dig is a horrible move, even when stalling. You get fucked over by Pokemon like Haunter and Exeggutor. I'd recommend a moveset of Ice Punch, Earthquake, Recover, and Toxic.

I think a MixedSharpedo would work better on your team.
Sharpedo@Life Orb
EVs: 252 ATK/80 SPA/176 SPE
Nature: Lonely
- Hydro Pump
- Crunch
- Aqua Jet
- Hidden Power Grass

He has STAB, priority, and good coverage with this set.
