Gen 1 old school warstory: 100 turns of rby

With d/p out, its easy to forget the good old days of rby, with all these new shiny pokemon, tricky rooms, stealthy rocks, exploding whales, some of it is just plain silly. In times like this, its good to go back to your roots. To play a game of red blue yellow, where the mechanics make even less sense, and the little glitches make the competitive scene quirky and refreshingly different.

So I hopped onto the new net battle and signed onto pmnb, and within 10 minutes squared off against some red battler from the motherland, Soviet Kioko.

Lately I've been quite taken with a hybrid team I've been running.
Ruby's Team: Alakazam, Golem, Starmie, Victreebel, Cloyster, and Charizard.

The concept is simple, Zam, Golem, and Starmie play a defensive game, spreading as much para as possible and taking early hits and status, so that later in the match my wrappers can safely switch in and gain the upper hand, through free switches, slow damage, and other tricks.

Soviet Kioku vs Ruby. Begin!
Soviet Kioku sent out Rapist (Lv.100 Gengar)!
Ruby sent out Alakazam (Lv.100 Alakazam)!

An all to familiar situation. Kioku leads Gengar, people these days are simply obsessed with its 60% sleep attack, to the point where Zam leads are equally plentiful. The rby metagame seems to go through these phazes, the turn 1 sleep is so important that Gengar leads cause a rise in Alakazam leads. At anyrate Zam is always a solid lead, as he puts pressure on all of the starter sleepers except exeggutor. At any rate, most Gar leads know they aren't OHKO'd by Zam's psychic and some try to go for that crucial sleep attack, however Kioku doesn't want to risk it (understandably) and swiches to Zam's arch nemesis, CHANSEY who shrugs off my psychic taking only 19% damage but Zam will be Zam, and gives me an opportunity to switch to Victreebel on turn 3 for my guaranteed sleep.

Begin Turn #2
Alakazam used Psychic!

Ruby's Victreebel: 363 HP

Begin Turn #4
Soviet Kioku withdrew Chansey!
Soviet Kioku sent out Rapist (Lv.100 Gengar)!
---------------------------------
Victreebel used Sleep Powder!
Gengar fell asleep!
---------------------------------
End of turn #4
Soviet Kioku's Gengar: 100% HP (Slp)
Ruby's Victreebel: 363 HP

There is an art in rby, that I am trying to learn, as it is especially important on wrap teams, and it is getting a feeling for when enemy chanseys, starmies, and Zams will use thier recover. As if they are paralyzed, it will grant you a free switch to your wrapper of choice. In this case I could take advantage of a 75% guaranteed sleep. As my opponent had no paralized pokemon yet to shrug off the sleep. I was pleasantly surprised he picked Gengar to absorb the status, as the ghost totally walls my Victreebel. Now that hes sleeping, every time he shows up I get an almost free switch.

Begin Turn #5
Soviet Kioku withdrew Gengar!
Soviet Kioku sent out David Blaine (Lv.100 Alakazam)!
---------------------------------
Ruby withdrew Victreebel!
Ruby sent out Golem (Lv.100 Golem)!

End of turn #6
Soviet Kioku's Starmie: 100% HP
Ruby's Alakazam: 251 HP

I send out Golem expecting Gengar to stick to burn sleep turns, but he swichs out his own Zam. I now know more than half of Kioku's team. At this point I have pieced together, Gengar, Chansey, Zam, and Starmie, while he has only seen Zam, Victreebel, and Golem.

Starmie, fearing an incoming thunderbolt switches away to Chansey who trades volley's with Zam, Zam is Zam and got a special down,

Begin Turn #9
Ruby withdrew Alakazam!
Ruby sent out Golem (Lv.100 Golem)!

Begin Turn #10
Soviet Kioku withdrew Chansey!
Soviet Kioku sent out Ridin' Spinnas (Lv.100 Starmie)!
---------------------------------
Golem used Body Slam!
(27% damage)
Starmie is paralyzed! It may be unable to move!
---------------------------------
End of turn #10
Soviet Kioku's Starmie: 73% HP (Par)
Ruby's Golem: 363 HP

Ouch, I was on a roll early this game. Golem predicted the switch to Starmie, and scored a paralyzing Slam. Of course Starmie has too many hitpoints for Golem to take out right now, and I can't risk sending in victreebel, as I don't know if he runs blizzard over surf or not, so I send in my mini chansey and put out Alakazam again.

The next series of turn are spent between Zam and Starmie trading hits, my seismic toss, against his blizzards and surfs, neither of us predict recovers particularly well, and he ends up sending in chansey, while I swich to golem on his soft boiled. to which starmie comes back in taking 40% from earthquake, then he and Zam start trading off hits AGAIN. They were meant to be togeather!

By turn 25 I'm getting tiered of this and decide to try something different

Begin Turn #26
Alakazam used Thunder Wave!
Chansey is paralyzed! It may be unable to move!
---------------------------------
Chansey is paralyzed! It can't move!
---------------------------------
End of turn #26
Soviet Kioku's Chansey: 82% HP (Par)
Ruby's Alakazam: 313 HP

I mean, sure Chansey is obnoxious and they tend to LIKE para, but I can't freeze it as my charizard is sure to melt it, and gengar is already sleeping. might as well paralyze it so it can be handled by my wrappers more effectively. After chansey is paralized starmie comes out AGAIN... because zam and starmie haven't been jockeying enough lately, however, his Starmie is paralyzed, and my Zam isn't, and unfortunately for Starmie, his paralysis eventually caught up to him.

End of turn #29
Soviet Kioku's Starmie: 46% HP (Par)
Ruby's Alakazam: 256 HP

Begin Turn #30

---------------------------------
End of turn #31
Soviet Kioku's Chansey: 82% HP (Par)
Ruby's Alakazam: 256 HP

Ruby 6-5

That's one dangerous Pokemon taken down, but unfortunately Zam is starting to run low on pp. His Chansey throws down thunder wave on my Zam, and he switches back to his own Kazam.

Begin Turn #36

End of turn #36
Soviet Kioku's Alakazam: 68% HP

So his Zam's fourth move is kinesis, lovely. That means he'll certainly out stall any individual Pokemon I send in. Fortunately I can always send in Starmie to take psychics if my own Zam has a special fall.

Begin Turn #37

Ruby's Alakazam: 256 HP (Par)

Ruby 5-4

There no more Chansey, fortunately for me Gengar or Rhydon didn't switch in to take the blast. And the Zams square off once more. Kioku is starting to run out of recover stalling special walls, he'll have to be careful to stay in this game. He pulls some clever tricks, by switching Gengar into my t wave, then zam into my intended psychic but I was fully paralyzed. I notice hes using his prediction to stall me out, which is not an unreasonable goal, as Zam is running dangerously low on both seismic toss and psychic from the amount of playtime hes had. Thinking fast I wise up to his prediction and blast a psychic at Alakazam.

It looks as though Kioku's team is coming apart at the seams. He cannot even get a sub off anymore from his Rhydon. and he'll need to EQ to hit zam hard. Time to send in Charizard.

---------------------------------
End of turn #48
Soviet Kioku's Tauros: 81% HP
Ruby's Cloyster: 233 HP (Par)

oh fun, his 6th pokemon is Tauros. If I've learned anything from smogon, its "where there is a Tauros, there is a way"- his Tauros is very healthy and Cloyster took a paralyzing hit switching in. He switches to Gengar, and I switch off to Kazam. Wise to his tricks, I t-wave the sleeping Gengar and hit his incoming Alakazam. A relief to my wrappers that his speedy Zam is now paralyzed. He starts Kinesising, and I start switching off between my own Zam and Starmie. Getting my starfish paralyzed in the process, and Rhydon coming in on one of my switches to Zam. Great.

Well I know he won't EQ, cause Zard just waltzed in last time. But rock slide won't finish Zam. So I'll stick around.

Well that's not good. Not only is Rhydon still breathing, I'm in a NASTY spot of trouble right now. As I lack a clean switch into Rhydon. Who would have thought this red health Rock type would cause me so much trouble?

Tie Game 4-4

Well Victreebel is out now, and she will prevent Rhydon from doing too much, and Tauros is afraid to switch in on her, because he fears stun spore. Which a full health Vic will most certainly pull off. Zam takes 33% from her razor leaf, and I start wrapping until Gengar shows up, I swich to Zard while he sleeps like a baby.

Another fully para at a critical moment. The hax gods are repaying me for my strong start. At any rate, despite his disheveled team, Kioku has managed to push into the lead. Although with Gengar still sleeping the score is actually closer to 3-3. But at this point, with both teams so worn down, the game starts to speed up. Gengar comes in on Victreebel, trying desperately to use Victreebel to score turns to hopefully wake up, and reversal the sleep with a Hypnosis. Unfortunately he had no such luck.

I hope you enjoyed this 100 turns of action packed- prediction filled red blue yellow classic. To recap, the teams were

Ruby: Alakazam, Golem, Starmie, Victreebel, Cloyster, Charizard
versus
Soviet Kioku: Gengar, Alakazam, Tauros, Rhydon, Starmie, Chansey

In hindsight, my victory was entirely due to my strong start, and Gengar's refusal to wake up. Overall this was a very enjoyable battle.

It has been a while since I wrote a warstory, and I thought the best way to do one would be go back to our roots. I hope you enjoyed reading the battle half as much as I enjoyed playing it =)

This was a pretty good warstory, even though the comments got sparce near the end I really liked reading about RBY back in the day. One thing though, I would like to ask you post your team at the top, as I hate not knowing the writers team.

Banned deucer.
I agree with Gen, this was pretty good for an RBY warstory. Comments were meh, but whatever. Good job!
