Project OM Interviews (Slither Wing @ Post 115!)

If you could choose one other game to be extremely good at (pro-level) what would it be and why?

Anything you like to do IRL/outside of mons?

Are there any projects you would like to host or see happen within the Pokemon sphere? Doesn't have to be OMs

Probably Celeste, cause being able to fly through rooms with all of the movement tech would be so sick and it's just an overall fun game to master.

In terms of games, I like to play Celeste, Hollow Knight and Rain World, but I've also started playing Ori (currently Blind Forest) recently and I've been loving it so far! IRL, I like to play handball, meet up with friends at a local TCG store, and I've also been trying out some very basic coding (mainly by just following the Harvard CS50 introduction for Python, but I'd love to hear any other resourse reccomendations if you have any)

In OMs: I would love to see some kind of OM Spotlight League, especially as OMWC is a flawed system that people have been complaining about.(as far as I'm aware at least) There are also just a lot of smaller OMs that deserve some extra visibility, and I do think that it would be a really enjoyable team tournament experience.

Outside of OMs: Idk how realistic it would be, but some kind of widespread teambuilding guide in some of the larger metagames like CG & past gen OU, DOU, VGC etc would be really appreciated as somebody looking to learn them. I've been trying to learn some of these larger metagames myself, and it can sometimes be quite overwhelming when trying to learn and build in very established metas by making my own teams. I'm not sure how realistic or applicable it would be, but in my eyes it would be a very helpful addition as a newer players to these metagames.

whats your favorite gen 9 partners in crime team?

Come on HiZo, you know I have only use one teamstyle in PIC nowadays... so I guess I'll have to share it.
:ogerpon-hearthflame: :zapdos-galar: :chien-pao: :iron hands: :rillaboom: :entei:
Since OM Grand Slam, this is essentially the only PIC team I use, and it's what I played with in test games for Frixel and you (unless you specifically ask me to use a different team in order to have a feel for other mus), PIC Seasonal, and Champs. I've gone through a bunch of different versions of priospam, such as kingambit > zapdos-g, dragonite > entei & ursaluna + diancie > zapdos-g+ iron hands, but this is the version I like the most and the one I used vs Damflame in Champs finals.

Hey friend
Most important question first, how is it to be that nice and lovely as a human being? :blobnom:

About you

Where your pseudo is coming from?

Most favorite food or type of food if any?

If you finished high school but keep studying, what are you studying? Otherwise, what are you doing for a living?

What are you most likely to sacrifice between sleep, studying, hobbies and health practises (diet and sport)?

Do you think you're the leader or follower type of people?

If you were an animal, which one would you be and why?

Cat or dog team? (can lead to you being disliked by a part of the commu and by myself)

If you were able to go to an anime/game/film/serie/you understood universe, which one?

If you were able to go to a period in history of any country, which one?

If you're listening music, which style do you like the most? Favorite song?

Emote you're using the most on discord? (share if that's a one we're not used to)

Can you bathe in the baltic sea during summer without being a viking?

Explain why pannu is most likely the first one to die if they were to play Squid Game or any survival game?

Most impressive win(s) during Paris's olympics?

Osake needs advices to get a gf, which would you give to him?

Open question on who's the biggest fraud and why it's Atha?

WHEN ARE YOU PLANNING TO GO TO FRANCE?! We can't wait to see you! :blobnom:

About mon

In which OM do you think Charizard-X is the best? (like, a meta mon)

Favorite perma meta during 2024 and why? (so it includes Inherit and PIC)

Favorite non-perma meta during 2024 and why?

Most interesting meta in terms of teambuilding possibilities?

Most competitive meta to you?

Overall most enjoyed meta?

Meta with the best resources?

Player who inspired you/you admire the most?

Players you're looking forward to play the most during this year circuit in each meta?

Retired player you would have liked to play the most during competitive games?

Do you watch replays of the game you lost to see if you missed something and improve?

What matters the most for you against a well-known opponent, bring something you're confortable with overall or something that can have a good MU into what your opponent is usually bringing (prep) despite not being used to it?

What's THE advice you'll give to a beginner to get better?

What matters the most for you during a teamtour? (atmosphere, level of your teammates, leader, support, etc)

Do you think we need more "funny" teamtours like crew one or with another set of metas?

Do you think enough has been done to develop non-perma OMs? If no, any idea to improve this?

Any idea to combat the weariness that sets in some metas and the tours "burnout"?

A pleasure to harass you with those questions anw :blobpex:

Dude Siamato you're a madman LMAO, really appreciate you

I'd say it's pretty cool, I always try to be as nice and kind as I can be, which often leads to meeting a bunch of awesome people.

About me

My initials are SC, soooo yeah you can probably figure it out.

Greek food!! I love Greek food so much, and I will take any opportunity I can to eat Tzatziki, Feta cheese or lamb. In terms of specific dishes, I will always be a sucker for pasta (especially fettuccine meals).

Probably some field in engineering. I have always been interested in maths and physics but becoming an engineer has always been more appealing than becoming a mathematician or physicist. If all else fails, I have a fair bit of experience being a leader with young-ish kids through handball, so I could probably find a job at a daycare or preschool.

I would probably sacrifice a mix of health practises and hobbies. I don't play sports very competitively and while I do value my hobbies a lot, they're not as essential as sleep and studying are.

Definetly a follower, I've always been a bit socially awkward and passive when it comes to social interactions, so I rarely find myself being the leader when it comes to group projects or doing stuff with friends.

Quokka! Have you seen that smile (I mean they're technically not smiling, but we overlook that)

Dogs, due to me being held at gunpoint. Cats are also cool, I guess...

Uhh, Mario I guess? Idk I can't really think of anything else, Mario is just the first thing that came to mind (aside from Pokémon obviously, but that one is soooo boring)

I'd probably say like 2 years ago, because any actually significant period of history anywhere would be littered with diseases, social injustice, high crime rates, etc. About 2 years ago was when I started playing Hollow Knight, which is an experience I would definetly want to relive. Awesome game btw, if you're reading this and haven't played it, you should. Sorry for the boring answer tho :(

EDM and lofi, I don't really have a favourite song per se but I like a lot of music from GlitchxCity and NoCopyrightSounds.

The emotes I use the most are  :fire: :goat:  and  For emotes that I don't often use in an OM setting, it would probably be :clover: since we often react with it to draft replays whenever somebody lucked another person.

Yes... I think. I'm fairly sure that thick beards and viking helmets don't just suddenly appear whenever we go bathing in the baltic sea.

He would try to find some kind of clever loophole, but ultimately fail.

Admittedly, I didn't really follow any sports in the Paris Olympics, but I did follow the handball Olympics! On the men's side, nothing impressive happened because Denmark just steamrolled everyone.... but Sweden got 4th and Norway won it all on the women's side, which was really cool to watch! Oh and I of course can't forget to mention that Turkish guy who got a silver medal without any equipment, but that answer was quite obvious due to how popular Dikec became.

Uhhh, I am not the guy you should ask when it comes to this stuff, so I'll just give some terribly bad answer like "he should embody the charming charizzard he is"

It's clearly Atha cause imagine being "the best AAA player" but not win a single SVAAA circuit tournament. SMH

I am not really sure... but I do have a lot of close friends that plan to move to France once we graduate, so I will probably travel there sometime to meet up with them when they're studying in university. So maybe like 2-4 years in the future?

About mons

In SVOMs it really only exists in BH and MNM, and it's certainly bad in BH so it would probably be MNM (dd sweeper that can break etern + lati magearna cores I guess???) In general OMs though, it would probably be one of the NDAAA / SM / ORAS metagames just because having magic guard pre mega is so useful on it.

PIC, it just hit such a solid balance between being fun, competitive, having room for innovation yet being stable enough to where you could consistently rely on solid team structures.

Camomons, come on now that one was very low-hanging fruit.

BH because well, you can use (almost) anything on (almost) any mon. I do also want to mention MNM because it felt quite unexplored throughout the year, and there were a lot of opportunities to innovate new sets and techs on a lot of mons.

BH banned a total of like two cheese-enabling moves, and that really goes to show how balanced the metagame is. Nothing has arguably felt overwhelming, and it finds a good balance between having enough variance to where there are constantly new opportunities to innovate, but not too much variance to the point of feeling like the metagame is unstable.

I really enjoyed playing PIC, which at this point isn't much of a surprise. However, GG was also extremely fun throughout the year, even if the metagame was a bit unstable with stuff like Baxcalibur, Volcarona and Raging Bolt around.

AAA has like a billion resource council members, and it shows because its almost always on top the VR changes, sample teams, speed tiers, etc. It also manages to constantly make more resources that help players get into the metagame, which is something that no other metagame really does.

In terms of individual players that inspired me, Career was a very big motivation for why I branched out in the beginning of the 2024 circuit, as I admired the way he prepped and played the game. Watching his circuit championship run was also awesome, and I followed a lot of his replays in AAA Seasonal (the 2023 one) when I was tryharding it in losers bracket. Oh, and as I mentioned in the interview with April, the AAAPL 1 Charizzard gang was a very big source of inspiration, and one of the main reasons why I branched out.

Atha in AAA, we have to run it back after deadgaming in OMWC finals. QT in BH because both games we've played in the past year have been absolutely terrible. Cotta in GG since he stalled me r2 of GG Seasonal, and went on to win the entire thing. Yes I am petty and spiteful. Ivar in MNM because I'm pretty sure that we haven't played eachother in MNM once this entire year outside of test games, like wtf??? And then Kinetic in STAB because I am like 0-4 against Kinetic's Clodsire teams (I spam pex in STAB). I know PIC doesn't count because it's no longer part of the circuit, but if it gets an indovidual tour or two at some point, then I would love to fight Chromate.

Since I am quite unfamilliar with OM history, then I am not especially familliar with the retired players. However, I would like to run it back vs Jrdn (if he counts ig) because I had a lot of fun in our OMPL set.

Yeah. As I said earlier, I am always bothered by my losses so I constantly think back to them, even months after I played them. Hell, to this day I still sometimes think back to that one game we played in AAA Seasonal where I choked against you (Siamato), and that game was over a year ago.

It depends a lot on how much knowledge and experience we have in the tier(s) we're playing in. If I feel like I have an underlying advantage when it comes to a certain metagame, then I am more inclined to bring something I am comfortable with. This is because they have likely not played against my type of team while I am more likely to have played against the type of team that they are using with my own, so I have an idea of how the game plays out and what I need to do to win. On the other hand, if I feel like I have an underlying disadvantage, then I am more likely to bring something different (still solid though!) but with techs and prep for teams they typically bring. If they use a lot of offense, I'll make sure to have a scarfer and reliable priority, while if they use a lot of fatter teams, then I'll try exploring different breakers that match up well against the defensive cores they usually have. Ideally, most good team should of course have a mix of speed control and breaking power, but the way in which the two are used on a team can vary a lot. It is also worth noting that it's beneficial to change the style of team I use from what I am comfortable with if I suspect that my opponent wants to lean into prepping or even cteaming territory. Most of the time it's pretty easy to spot "cteamers" if you try, so it is especially important to vary my prep if the teams I usually use have any glaring weaknesses or threats.

Build teams and get comfortable with a specific style. I already voiced this in the main interview, but building is the best way to learn a metagame and how certain weaknesses develop, which you can take advantage of when trying to prep against opponents. From experience, quickly developing a specific style of team that you are comfortable with can level the playing field, giving you more breathing room in-game. As you contiunuously use the same style of teams, you can both refine it to be better and better, and learn the ins and outs of how matchups play out in more cases. This just minimises the disadvantage when you are playing somebody who has more experience and knowledge than you.

Atmosphere and team activity truly goes a long way. While it is of course important to have a mix of good players, support and activity, having an active team chat at all times not only makes the tournament more fun, but also promotes better prep and matchup knowledge. A decent player with solid prep can easily beat a good player with mediocre prep.

The more team tours the better! A side metagame team tours would definetly be a lot of fun, and it would promote the growth of many smaller metagames that have tons of untapped potential.

Kind of? OMotM and LCotM are both obv very helpful and 24 metas are definetly a lot, though it's often the case that OMotM metagames are recycled due to being more popular so I guess it's a bit less than 24. This can lead to a lot of metagames (some of which are probably really cool and deserve some attention) being left in the dust. While it might be unrealistic, having some kind of circulating individual tour for them could definetly be a way to shine some light on them. Another idea could be the aforementioned spotlight team tournament which would most likely be very casual, but with say 8/10 slots of new metagames, it could definetly be an enjoyable time.

Have fun lol. I was very lucky to experience very little burnout over this past year, but I think that part of the reason why I didn't was due to a self-inflicted restrain I had on myself to enjoy prepping and playing as much as I could. After all, we play this game on our free time as a hobby, so the entire reason for playing should ultimately be to have fun. Playing in the team tournaments over the year were also very good for combating burnout, as you get used to the high pressure environment whilst using prep that has gone through many discussions, making you very confident in it. Talking to people is also just a good way to fight burnout, as they give you more motivation to keep going and keep playing. I found it very helpful to set specific goals as well, such as placing better than a friend in a tournament or going out of my way to use a specific mon or style I usually wouldn't.

Wow that was a lot. Thank you Siamato for all of the questions, it was a pleasure to be bombarded with them

Also, please lmk if I missed any questions or would like me to elaborate on anything.

isnt young love a beautiful thing
Everytime we touch is an absolute banger and perfect for our wedding night, thanks!!

Here a picture of our first kid, Sammysato12398 (yeah we didn't lose any time and it was born quickly thanks to UT's Flame Body).

Who is your favorite villain in fiction ?

Is there any countries you'd like to visit ?

What do you think of aaa's latest ban ?

How are you doing ?

Yzma (and Kronk too if I'm allowed) from The Emperor's New Groove, the movie is just so incredibly enjoyable to watch and they add to that with all of their iconic lines and irony.

I know it's a really boring answer, but I have always wanted to go to Japan because I have heard of so many fun experiences there.

I never really touched the post-volcarona aaa metagame, so I am not really educated enough to make an opinion on the ceruledge ban. However, the volc ban didn't really change up the metagame too much, so I would probably say that it is a net positive for the tier due to making building feel less restricted now. Also hoping to see some more developments to balance going forward now that its #1 enemy is gone.

I am doing very well right now, thank you!

:leafeon: Welcome back to another episode of OM Interviews! We've got a special one for all the viewers at home today. Now, longtime viewers of my previous projects will know that today's guest is a great friend of mine, even if he is a worse SmogCord mod than I am. A great writer, council member, contributor to our section and even a nominee for best analysis writer on the whole site, Let's give a round of applause to maybe the biggest LARPer OMs have ever seen, Slither Wing! Good evening and welcome to the show! What can you tell us about yourself, and how are you doing today?

:slither-wing: Hello, I am doing great, and thank you for hosting me! Firstly, I think the title of OMs biggest larper belongs to you now miss with all of your wonderful projects and recent promotions, but I am thankful to be on here regardless! I'm Slither Wing, or more commonly known as Bonk. I'm 19 and living in Sweden (Don't listen to Sammy I'm the better swede) and just recently started university, studying Biomedicine. I'm overall a huge fan of video games, with me currently playing a lot of Pokemon (shocker I know) but also a bit of Genshin and platformers such as Hollow Knight and Shovel Knight. Circling back to Pokemon, I play specifically a lot of OMs, mostly being Almost Any Ability, Mix and Mega, and STABmons, but I've been playing Pokemon as a whole for about 14 years. Oh, and I can't of course forget about my two dogs that I take care of!

:leafeon: I'm no LARPer. I'm just committed. Getting right into it: You just so happen to be council for all 3 of the metagames you mentioned! How'd you get to this point?

:slither-wing: Right, that's a great question (because I'm not even sure myself lmao)! Well, firstly, I think what drew me to OMs specifically is the fact that I've been playing mons overall for a very long time, and when I eventually discovered them in late SS it felt like a new breath of fresh air. However, I didn't really start taking them seriously until around late April 2023, which is when I started to really dabble in AAA. This was also the same time I started posting on forums, so if I hadn't started then who knows where I'd been today.

Anyways, much like anyone else testing out a new metagame I wasn't the greatest, but since it was now the only metagame I played aside from a little bit of Mix and Mega, I slowly got better, and even managed to get drafted in AAAPL 1. Yes I didn't do great, going 0-1, but getting drafted overall kinda told me that I could perhaps become a prominent tour player one day, so I just continued playing and even starting to engage with the community. And well... if you do this for long enough, I guess people will start to recognize your efforts, and eventually I managed to land a council position for AAA, and shortly after OMPL Mix and Mega and STABmons too.

It's also funny that you mention it cause personally I kinda just see myself as yet another player that has invested a little too much time into these metagames, but one day I'd like to prove to myself that I am in fact not just another nobody that just happens to get here and that I'm actually a capable player, even if others perhaps think otherwise.

:leafeon: You're your own worst critic. Except me, I'm probably a worse critic of you. This ain't about me though. You mentioned tours being a major catalyst for your growth in the community. Does this mean it's safe to assume you'll be running it back this year?

:slither-wing: Right... so about that. I haven't really played in many tournaments recently, skipping OM Majors and prepping half-assed for the MnM Seasonal back in autumn, and to be honest it's been a bit hard for me to pinpoint why I've kind of lost motivation recently. Not to mention, my IRL has been a lot busier with University and I haven't really gotten into routine yet, so as it stands it's a bit rough. However, that doesn't mean I'm gonna skip out. I'd really like to win/get a high placing in a Seasonal or Open, and as much as I didn't really enjoy OMPL last year I'm hoping this time that it'll be different, so to answer your question; Yes, but it's gonna be a slow start for now until I get everything else sorted, and then it's time to cook with Static in AAA some powerful teams and crush some opponents.

:leafeon: Please don't cook with Static. Fire is typically more effective than electricity for heating food.

You've become held in pretty high regard by the community as a triple council member, c&c staff, room staff and generally great presence. Has this been hard to adjust to at all?

:slither-wing: Oh don't say it like that... In any ways, I don't really see myself as a high-standing figure despite all those titles, mostly boiling down to the simple fact that I haven't really been involved with OMs and even Smogon in general for too long. And in that sense maybe it has been hard to adjust; smogon is funnily enough the first real online community that I've been apart of despite having been on the internet for basically 10+ years, so everything that has to do with community etiquette and the likes have been a first for me here, but I'm glad that I managed to for once get out of my shell and engage myself with this community, and not to mention thankful that I got to know so many cool people thanks to this website. So I will probably continue to learn more as time passes, and by some point I will probably "adjust" so to say.

:leafeon: OK nerd.

They say getting out of your comfort zone is the best way to grow. Do you think you've grown as player? It's not hard to imaging you being a pretty pricey pickup in the coming OMPL.

:slither-wing: Rude :(

But yes I would actually like to think so atleast, while I haven't really participated in that many tours I've gotten a lot better at handling and accepting my losses. I still get so-called "tour nerves", but only regarding team tours, as my performace simply isn't affecting me only, so that's something to work on but I believe the best way to get over that is simply to participate in more team tours to get a feel for it. As for my OMPL price... well lets just say I don't think I'm going for that much considering my general inconsistencies as a player, but if I go for more than last year I'll be a happy lad.

:leafeon: Don't worry I'll bribe a manager into spending 20k on you. Obviously you have experience in several metagames, but you know I have to ask: Which OM is your favorite, and why? Can you give us a bit of insight into how you play/build in that tier?

:slither-wing: Well, as some may know, I've only really stuck to three of the permanent OMs since I joined, being coincidentally all the OMs I'm council for in AAA, MnM, & STAB, and honestly it's a tough question cause I do love all of them. If I were to answer as a whole I would probably have to say AAA; I love the variety, the surprise factors you're able to bring as well as the offensive pace that the meta currently leans towards, and it's the one I've played the most by far. At this moment though I think I'd actually have to say Mix & Mega. To me Mix & Mega is a super flexible tier with lots and lots of cool techs and viable Pokemon that to me honestly feels a bit unexplored, and most of the points brought up with AAA apply here as well. As for how I like to build/my thought process during playing...

I think in general all my build ideas start with either a single mon or a core of some kind, nothing unusual. This could be for example a team built around Scizorite Weavile or a core consisting of Blizzard Kyu-W and Chilly Glowking. After that I kind of just deduce what I have to look out for, what lines of play I think will occur frequently and plan accordingly. For example, here in MnM I really like having a way to stop Regieleki, as most of my teams will lean into being super aggressive offenses/BOs, so pivoting Ground-Types like Iron Treads or Swampert are often on my teams. as for the playing part, I think what I enjoy most about battling is playing aggressively and making hard reads (Not the greatest habit I'll admit but when it works the dopamins spikes are too high for me to stop doing it), basically always trying to put myself in the drivers seat and forcing the opponent on their backfoot so they make mistakes. This, while fun, is super inconsistent in practice and will probably not win you any WCoP titles, but it's how I like to play and I have a hard time seeing myself step away from this playstyle. Despite this I definetly still think teambuilding is my weaker link, so I'm hoping I can hone that skill more over the coming years.

:leafeon: Last question: What advice would you give to anyone else looking to establish themselves in this or any community?

:slither-wing: Well, it's quite simple advice and I'm sure most people who are interested in joining a community already knows this to an extent, but the best way literally is to just try and join in / create discussions. Hell, my first real post was about Volcanion in AAA, and even if it took me a while to actually be considered known in this community posting a lot on either forums or in discords help a ton, cause even if you don't believe it people will notice your efforts and will eventually recognize you. Oh and also don't be an asshole or like overtly annoying, but that should hopefully be even more obvious :)

(editor's note: many of you could stand to learn from this)

:leafeon: You mentioned your lovely dogs at the beginning of this post. May we see them before we end the interview?

:slither-wing: Ugh fiiiine, since you're such a fan...

Two Golden retriever gals, the one on the left is Luna while the one on the right is Nike

How would you find motivation to keep playing after mediocre performances ? (Not for me, asking for a friend...)

What is your biggest flaw ?

How are you ?

If you could live in any fictional universe (movie, game, novel...), which one would that be ?

Do you consider that entertainment is essantial in our society and we should invest more in it ?

What's your favorite Taylor Swift vault song?
I don't know what vault means but I do remember hearing Blank Space and Shake It Off a lot from when I was younger and they were mainstream so hope that answers it

Well all my perfomances are mediocre but for real, if I'm like very upset with how I performed I usually just try to take a quick break of a couple days from thinking about mons, this can be either through doing stuff irl or distracting myself with other games. What I usually struggle with is that after a loss I'll be constantly thinking about that loss specifically and what I could've done better, and while that's good short-term it gets pretty distracting after a while so if I just stop thinking about mons as a whole for some time it's much easier to return with a fresh mindset and a clean palate to start thinking again.

Currently I have a lot of things I wanna work on but as for now I'd say my biggest flaw is my inability to truly commit to things, be it hobbies, work, or else. It's been like this for essentially my whole life and it can get pretty frustrating at times wanting to do something but just having that mental block that says no.

I am doing very well at the moment, just finished an exam, ty for asking and hope ur doing well too <3

I feel like saying Pokemon would be too basic of an answer so I'll go with one of the Ghibli movies, probably My Neighbor Totoro cause that's my favorite + it looks very cozy

I think in large that depends on what you'd consider entertainment, but kind of yes, entertainment is a way for us humans to take a break from our world and escape into a reality where our creativity controls everything without bounds, which for many is both a motivator but also a way to alleviate us from stress & other responsibilities life gives us. As for if we should invest more into it I'm less sure, I'd prefer if we instead invested into minimizing labour and the likes to allow for more free expression and more free time, which in turn would let people create more entertainment simply said.

Dear Mr. Iron Moth, am I washed? Also, why do you like Slither Wing so much?
Personally I don't wash my eggs as we don't need to here so hard to say. I like Slither Wing for two reasons:
1) I like dinosaurs (a lot)
2) I also like Insects (a lot)
Slither Wing is a combination of the two. Enough said.

This one is insane hating but it also made me laugh so can't even be mad

Let's say, hypothetically, you are on a plane headed to a long vacation to your location of choice after finishing uni. In theory, if the plane crashed 4 hours, 16 minutes, and 31 seconds in, leaving only you and 3 Smogon users of your choice alive stranded on a deserted island for 2 months with no technology available to you, who are you choosing and why?

What was your lunch today? Did you take any pictures? If you didn't post the latest food picture you took :pweading:

Why are you so goated?

What are your career plans in the future?

How's life as a uni student? Biomedicine must be tough to study after all.

Thoughts on Hisuian Typhlosion?
