Project OM Mashup Megathread (National Dex MnM @ #143 is OMM Spotlight!)

ABC Monoletter

ABC Monoletter is a mashup of the OM AlphabetCup and the NDOT Monoletter. Which means that your whole team has to start with the same first letter and they can use any move starting with that letter (or the letter of their pre evo).

Council:

:latias: Drag0n (Leader)
:budew: BandedBodyPress
:floette-eternal: AthenaStrive9

Rules:
Species Clause: A player cannot have two Pokemon with the same National Pokédex number on a team.
OHKO Clause: A Pokemon may not have the moves Fissure, Guillotine, Horn Drill, or Sheer Cold in its moveset.
Evasion Clause: A Pokemon may not have either Double Team or Minimize in its moveset.
Sleep Clause: If a player has already put a Pokemon on his/her opponent's side to sleep and it is still sleeping, another one can't be put to sleep.
Endless Battle Clause: Players cannot intentionally prevent an opponent from being able to end the game without forfeiting.
Terastal Clause: Prevents Pokémon from Terastallizing
Same Letter Clause: Forces all Pokémon species on a team to start with the same letter
CFZ Clause: Bans the use of crystal-free Z-Moves
These are the Bans/Unbans that are specific to the ABC Monoletter ruleset, all other normal NatDex OU bans also apply.

Arceus-Water @ Leftovers
Ability: Liquid Voice
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Boomburst
- Ice Beam
- Thunderbolt
- Tail Glow

:Arceus-Water::Manaphy::Miraidon:
Arceus-Water is currently the best Arceus form. It can run offensive and defensive sets very effectively, but the Manaphy ban targets the very busted offensive sets. It gets Liquid Voice Boomburst, Mega Launcher Origin Pulse (along with every other pulse move other than Terrain Pulse), and SFLO. While those push Waterceus to be very strong, its access to Tail Glow pushed them over the edge. Its substantial bulk and great coverage also made revenge killing and tanking Waterceus very difficult. Miraidon was the biggest exception.

This decision will be reopened if Waterceus is ever banned. It still has access to Nasty Plot.
:Regigigas::Slaking:
They're still very strong, but the majority came to accept them as fine.

They are still premier revenge killers with STAB Adaptability Extreme Speed, but the downgrade of Facade to Double Edge was big for the ZU Normals. Their longevity with recoil and lorb means that they can really only take out 1-3 mons at most before being KOed themselves. This is an indirect buff to Slaking because it has much more HP than Regigigas.

The biggest nerf can be directly attributed to them running Adaptability over Guts. Being able to be statused can speed up their timers and reduce their damage. Also their coverage move, typically Knock off or Earthquake, does around 13% less damage with lorb than it would otherwise. That might not seem like a lot, but they feel the difference.

For those reasons, Gigas and Slaking are NOT BANNED

Now that a lot of the brokens have been addressed, the banlist can just be things that are very stong, but not alarmingly strong. Arceus-Water, Mega Floette, and Miraidon are being watched.

Quick post about inheritance mashups.

Inheritance is one of the most solid and succinct Other Metagame concepts. Simple as “Pokemon take their move and ability pools from another.” But making mashups with it is hard. How and why?

There’s two ways to think about inheritance. One is a modification to Stats and Type, and the other is a modification to Moves and Abilities. In my mind, you are choosing 12 Pokemon per team.

Camo Inheritance was, for a period in Gen 8 OMMs, decently popular. But it didn’t stay that way. My theory is that eliminating the consideration for Type via camomons mod removed a level of consideration for why you pick a Base in inheritance. Removing the Type consideration boils down your base choices to being the biggest ball of optimized stats, which becomes very centralizing.

For that reason, my conclusion is that we have to keep the bases unique. Camomons and Averagemons would be incompatible with Inheritance. If I were making an Inheritance mashup, I wouldn’t include them I’d also not include Scalemons and Bonus Type, they have a smaller degree of the same problem.

What about donors? Wouldn’t expanding donors options have the opposite problem?

Eh, maybe. I tried Alphabet Cup Inheritance for a bit. It was alright. But it adds another bigger level of complexity to a OM that already takes me a pretty long time to build for, and I’ve been doing mashups for a pretty long while.

If an OMM is too complex to build for, it will probably not take off. Camove and Umix are complex from the get go, but all it takes to remove that complexity is to kind of understand why the top mons are popular. Inheritance is way more intentional in what you’re building for imo. STAB is simpler, but it goes off of Donors as well. A layer of complexity is removed, but many of the best moves will be restricted and many more mons would be banned.

I’m going to say without a lengthy explanation that AAA, Frantic Fusions, Shared Power, and Conversion do not work.

I think the only way to adequately mashup with Inheritance is to add something that doesn’t:
A.) Remove Stats or Type as a factor in choosing a base
B.) Make choosing a donor any more complicated.

I tried Pokebilties, thinking that the base’s abilities would all be chosen. However, it’s the donor’s abilities that all apply. That’s fine. I guess.

Moved onto trying out Godly Gift. I think I cracked the code on The Inheritance Mashup. Improves on Inh by allowing a bigger pool of donors and bases. Improves on GG by making a large amount of Gods more viable/usable.

A lot of people are challenging each other with the code I’m about to list. Thought I would leave it here as well.

So lo and behold: this craziness (I made this literally today so bans will be coming (cough cough Barraskewda)). I hope this can at least get some interest and I didn't just waste my time.

:sv/Kyurem-White: Alphabet's Gift Hub :sv/Giratina:
What is it?
Alphabet's Gift is a mashup of Alphabet Cup (Allows Pokémon to use any move that shares the same first letter as their name or a previous evolution's name), Godly Gift (a "god" (restricted Pokémon) passes on one of its stats on to other Pokemon based on team slot - 1 = HP, 2 = Attack, 3 = Defence, and so on. If no restricted Pokémon are used, the first Pokemon in the party's stats are used), Almost Any Ability, (Pokémon get access to almost any ability they want, as long as it's not banned), and Bonus Type (Pokémon have their Tera Type added onto their current ones).

Some examples:

Snorlax @ Leftovers
Ability: Earth Eater (From AAA)
Tera Type: Poison (Normal/Poison)
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def (150 Def from Calyrex-Ice)
Impish Nature
- Body Slam
- Mortal Spin (from M)
- Stone Axe (from S)
- Strength Sap (from S)

Slaking @ Leftovers
Ability: Desolate Land
Tera Type: Fire
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe

TSAAA Update

I'm going to keep it very concise and simple because all the changes today are.

:noivern:
Noivern has been banned from TSAAA. Anyone familiar with AAA will know that it can spam Boomburst for a lot of damage. Here it can do the same thing, just harder, better, faster, and stronger.

:Hoopa-Unbound:
Hoopa-Unbound is Hoopa-Unbanned. I think this thing was UU when it was originally banned. Being UUBL is like a ACL tear. Also it cannot be on the same team as a Hoopa-base, who is in conversation for the best mon in the tier atm.

:Koraidon:
Koraidon is unbanned. He's probably fine. What's good about TSAAA is that despite not being ubers-based, ubers are legal because most of them are outperformed by existing mons in the tier. The tier would tangibly benefit from a Fighting type with U-Turn that resists Electric and Grass.

:sv/Kommo-o: Alphabet's Gift bans :sv/Miraidon:

And with that, Kyurem-White, Hadron Engine and Boomburst are banned, Hisuian Electrode, Clangorous Soul, Sacred Fire and Water Spout are restricted, and Archaludon, Dragonite and V-Create remain freed!

:Kyurem-White: This guy has 170 base SpA, which it could combine with Adapt and either Specs or Scarf to become really strong with Dragon/Ice with either Fire or Ground STAB and basically deal over 50% to most non resists. Plus, giving 170 base SpA to another Pokémon also meant that Pokémon could hit very hard too. May not get any extra moves, but still very strong

:Miraidon: Hadron Engine was completely unbalanced here. High SpA combined with a 1.33x multiplier for both SpA and Electric moves was unhealthy, especially if some Pokemon could circumvent Electric's biggest weakness, Ground (cough cough Electrode-H).

:Noivern: Boomburst was deemed too powerful even limited to its natural users - they could all run high SpA with a 140 BP move, choose between 6 different types and still get STAB on it, while in most cases easily boost its damage at the same time (1.2x from -ate ability). Thus it was deemed too strong to still exist

:Electrode-Hisui: is also too good right now. Even though we're banning Kyurem-White and Hadron Engine, it is still able to use high powered attacks with not so many walls with hard hitting Eruptions, Solar Beams, Chloroblasts etc. with either Specs Desolate Land or MGLO, and as it also outspeeds most viable Pokemon in the tier by base speed, it was condisered too much for the tier

:Kommo-o: Tbh I don't know how I missed Clangorous Soul. Getting an omniboost for 1/3 of your max health is really powerful, where Pokemon like Calyrex-Ice, Cresselia etc. can abuse it and get insane stats

:Ho-Oh: Sacred Fire is a common move where Pokemon with access to it (of which there are quite a few) can use a drawback-less 100 BP almost fully accurate move with a 50/50 chance to have your physical attacker be much weaker. Just unbalanced.

:Blastoise: Water Spout can be used by various Pokémon to completely destroy opponents, especially in rain, and can be used by various Pokémon like Kilowattrel, Walking Wake and even some like Wugtrio. Dragon Energy and Eruption will also be looked at pretty soon.

As for the rest, while they are being freed, they're still being watchlisted as they are still sitting pretty comfortably near the top of the metagame
Archaludon can spam Primordial Sea STAB Electro Shots with high speed, Dragonite is there with its usual devious Aerilate Espeed but with better stats and strong STABs, Ursaluna is very versatile with Regenvest, MGLO, Tough Claws/Sword of Ruin or just its usual Guts set, and V-Create is a 180 BP nuke move able to be used by Pokemon with 150+ attack with STAB and Desoland, and can be combined with Victory Dance.

Should be all for now

Electrode-HisuiBANBANBANDNB
Ho-ohAbstainBANDNBBAN

Both Ho-oh and Hisuian Electrode have been banned.

:Electrode-Hisui:
Electrode Hisui was really restrictive on teambuilding. Magic Guard Life Orb Chloroblast makes it already 2hko most resists. Even if its a quad resist like Hoodra or Dialga, it can easily pivot out with its Volt Switch. At this point in time, not many Ground types are viable, and the few that are typically require their abilities to handle more than just Electrode, so they can't just slap on Sap Sipper. For this reason it had to go.

:Ho-oh:
Ho-oh quickly took off once unbanned. Like Electrode, it's best set was MGLO recoil moves. Flare Blitz and Brave Bird are obviously great off of 130 attack. Even if you run into something like Arcanine-Hisui or some WBB Steel type, you can hit it with Eq. Fire/Flying is a great defensive type once you take off the Stealth Rock weakness, even with your item eaten up. A great consistent offensive presence as well makes it crazy.

Intrepid Sword and Staraptite have been banned from Camo Fusions Mix and Mega! Comfey has been unbanned!

:rusted sword:
In a format where most mons can both use Intrepid Sword and Mega Evolution, it's no surprise that this thing is broken. Many sweepers greatly exploit this 1.5x attack boost to break through common walls, and Intrepid Sword also benefits less powerful sweepers hoping to anti-offense by KOing sweepers and wallbreakers.

:staraptite:
This item is completely unfair. The bulk and speed it provides is already enough, but Mega Staraptor receiving Contrary really pushed it over the edge. You're telling me my Dragapult can not only take hits for once, but also spam Draco Meteor for free? Other stat-lowering mons such as Ogerpon, Deoxys-Speed, and Iron Moth also abused this power boost to great extent.

:sv/comfey:
Although Triage is a pretty broken ability, don't get me wrong, the fact that Triage doesn't have a respective Mega Stone really hinders its performance. Triage can basically only be abused by Ubers, since they have above-average stats and cannot Mega Evolve. Additionally, good offensive recovery moves are hard to come by, especially since Oblivion Wing got dexited to, well, oblivion.

:rusted shield:
Dauntless Shield is clearly more tame than Intrepid Sword since a defense boost is much less impactful than its offensive counterpart. However, Zamazenta does still have noticeably insane stats, and Dauntless Shield is still a good ability nonetheless, although it is definitely healthier for the meta.

:sv/kyurem-white:
The amazing coverage this mon gives coupled with its sky-high SpA makes this mon a staple on all team styles excluding Stall. Kyurem-White is particularly amazing at enabling common Steel type sweepers such as :roaring moon: Roaring Moon and :gholdengo: Gholdengo to rip through defensive structures. This mon will probably be the main subject of our watchlist going forward.

:sv/deoxys: :sv/deoxys-attack:
These could be unbanned in the future, but we're currently keeping them banned due to their insane mixed donations. A particularly strong ESpeed also makes these :deoxys: :deoxys-attack: Deoxys formes strong.

:sv/zacian:
We're also considering unrestricting this mon as the fact that any mon can run Intrepid Sword makes it a bit weaker in comparison. It's basically just :zamazenta: Zamazenta with SD though.
Edit: I just realized that Intrepid Sword is no longer usable. However, losing its broken ability certainly helps to make it less busted.

https://pokepast.es/250ff67bc6635209 I made a team because viola kept randomly challenging me. As you can see, I am a ph player, who loves spamming shell smash sweepers. Toedscruel was inspired by mg kartana, which can revenge kill with stheir or defog. This doesn't have either, and rkills with foul play or mirror coat, and removes hazards with rapid spin, and taunt also does stuff. I chose minior and drednaw because they have shellsmash, and as a ph player, I am used to having a lot of shell smash users, mg is because I can preserve sash and use head smash, and dazzling is for trolling against smart players who realize that they can use priority into minior, because they actually can't. Hoopa is honestly really bad, and should be replaced, but the idea was that it's scarf but I can change moves, and it is also good with psysurge. Psysurge mesprit is also good because of mesprit's bulk, and because of it's support moves, as well as the fact that it prevents priority such and sucker punch and things that would kill drednaw. Muk is only here because I kept losing to hoopa after stealth rock was set up, but it should probably also be replaced. I could run pain split over memento, but muk has high hp, so it doesn't really restore that much.

I'm pretty sure evasion clause is listed wrong. It says that it bans double team and minimize, but it should also ban all other evasion things including acupressure, sand veil, snow cloak, bright powder, and tangled feet.

The post just says evasion clause, not evasion moves clause, and although not listed in the description, acupressure is also banned by evasion moves clause, as the actual effect of the clause is to ban moves that increase evasion. This is unimportant, but evasion clause should be changed to evasion moves clause, and I believe some evasion boosting abilities are banned by standard om rules, I'm pretty sure snow cloak and sand veil are at least, but I'm not sure about bright powder and the other evasion boosting things.

So what does all of this do to the meta? Well, dear reader, I’m glad you asked, because I have spent too much time thinking about this, so we’ll be going through this all one mod at a time.

Cat Swap: This would be more impactful if there weren’t other mods that interact with this in strange ways, but there are a few important changes. Sunsteel Strike/Moongeist Beam now hit the opposite side of the spectrum, so that’s worth keeping in mind when picking your FurScales, but that’s nothing major. Photon Geyser is locked into physical, so there is now only one special moldy move, Sunsteel Strike, but that isn’t a huge impact. The largest impact this will have is that moves like Draco Meteor or Fleur Cannon are now physical, so they ignore their downsides and are strong, spammable physical moves.

Revmons: Revelationmons is one of the mods that messes with things the most, because it gives every type good STABs. It also makes Normalize+Entrainment worthless, as Revelationmons overrides Normalize. The important things of note here are that moves like Draco Meteor on the physical side, or Bolt Strike on the special side, are now usable by every type. Sunsteel Strike, Moongeist Beam, and Photon Geyser are obviously restricted, as every type having access to mold breaker moves would be broken. Other moves like Fishious Rend/Bolt Beak, Gigaton Hammer, and V-Create are restricted because they would be broken on every type, but there are some moves that are part of this category that are also broken because of the next mod, so they are banned.

Inverse Mod: This messes with a lot of balancing, and breaks multiple things in half. First of all, Normal-type moves like Boomburst and Population Bomb are completely banned because they’re unresistable and incredibly strong. Second of all, Stored Power and Power Trip are much harder to sponge, so they are getting the ban hammer for being too cheesy, because if you remove the opposing setup control, or they didn’t bring any, then Power Trip/Stored Power are immense problems.

Scalemons: This is one of two mods that is responsible for almost all pokemon getting unbanned initially, because almost all of them got banned for being too strong, which is much harder to do when your BST is stuck at 600. This does not apply to Cramorant, because that rat bastard bird that I loathe deserves nothing but the darkest pit of hell. This will also help pokemon with unique type combinations thrive, and can also help weaker pokemon because their ratios are often more minmaxed.

Flipped: This is the other half of the reason that almost all pokemon are unbanned, because while there are a lot of pokemon with high atk/spa combined with high speed, these are now defensive walls, and the stat spreads that would be broken when flipped are much rarer. With that being said, Blissey/Chansey are on the watchlist because they have respectively 151 and 144 Attack, the best offensive typing in the game, and a speed stat that would let them run neutral natures and still outspeed non-flipped Regieleki. I also do not know how Flipped interacts with Shedinja so it is staying banned for the moment.

Bonus Type: This is probably the mod that is going to be the most problematic for this entire meta’s balance, because it is going to greatly benefit both offensive and defensive threats. Offensive threats now can have free Normal STAB, an immunity to a status that would otherwise handicap it, free STAB on a moldy move, or a boost in power to one of their coverage moves for free. Defensive threats on the other hand, now can choose between things like becoming more rocks-resilient for free, being unable to be poisoned, or just good old having a more disgusting defensive typing to hit. Overall, I expect to see most initial bans to be heavily influenced by this mod, which is also why the Tera Preview clause was included.

From the theorycrafting I have done with fellow council member(s), and from the games I have played, the combination of Scalemons and Bonus Type means that a truly vast amount of pokemon have potential to be really strong. Deoxys-Attack is insanely bulky, so both it and Eviolite are being looked at for potentially making the tier too bulky. Light Ball is on the radar because it's effectively Huge Power as an item. There's a lot of untapped potential here, but it really captures the outlandish and wacky nature of some OMMs, like UMix, which I really enjoy. It will still take some experience with Hackmons formats to know how to Improof though, but I'm always willing to help with that

FAQ:
Stats are flipped, then scaled.
Not that I have found on Showdown, but I made this Excel sheet to do it. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/18Ulny-cuUnT4xNPRgyOjov1XFcQ9K423Ug_j_gxJ4FM/edit?gid=0#gid=0
I didn’t want to implement complex bans, so I decided to keep Comatose over Sleep Talk and Transform over Imprison, because both of the remaining elements have theoretical use cases. Baton Pass was banned because it’s cheese and I don’t want to deal with it.

Tiering History:
7/10/26: Happiny banned.
