OM Orphanage
(inspired by kenn's fill in the blank and Melt Gibson's SV UU item shop)

When it comes to building teams, most of the best builders tend to gravitate towards a select few Pokemon, usually for good reason, but what about all the little guys that get left out? Can you find a use for them, too? Once a week, the OM Orphanage presents you with a Pokemon that tends to be underutilized in OMs, as well as their inherit strengths, weaknesses, and their direct competition, and it's you to come up with a reason to use them! We're not crafting new metagame staples here, but your goal is to carve a niche, be it big or tiny, for this Pokemon in any OM that it can do better than the competition!

During the week, you will post your set for this Pokemon, the niche you believe it carves out as well as some justification for it, and maybe even a team or a core featuring it. If you have replays featuring your set in action, even better! The primary goal is to justify the niche you've found for this Pokemon, even if it's a small one and even if it faces some competition. Occasionally, a metagame will be excluded from the running for a week if a Pokemon is prevalent there but in no other permanent OMs.

Submissions will close at 3pm Saturday, CST.

From Sunday to Tuesday, the people can vote for their favorite unique application, and the winner will be added to the hall of fame.

Without further ado, here's your first Pokemon!

:sv/rotom-mow:

The OM Orphanage presents you with the cutest lawnmower in Sinnoh! Rotom-M tends to face heavy competition from it's washing machine and easy-bake oven compatriots, but can you find a home for it?

Rotom-Mow has a nearly identical movepool to the other Rotom formes, with the exception of a powerful 130 BP Leaf Storm. It has a good defensive typing with Levitate and a quad resistance to Electric, utility options like Will-O-Wisp, Thunder Wave, and Trick alongside dual screens, while also possessing a decent offensive movepool including Nasty Plot, STAB Thunderbolt, Discharge, and Volt Switch, and Leaf Storm to hit any pesky Ground-types. Rotom-Mow's stats are also solid, if a little underwhelming, with a low base 50 HP (good for Pain Split!) counterbalanced by very solid defenses, an okay Speed tier, and acceptable Special Attack. With all of these good traits, there's a cornucopia of ways to bolster it in OMs!

Can you find this little lawnmower a garage of it's own in the OM community?

Definitely is way better in STABmons but Im still doing AAA

Rotom-Mow @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Hadron Engine
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Leaf Storm
- Thunderbolt
- Volt Switch
- Trick

Good general speed control mon that unlike Ghold actually threatens Swampert and Manaphy. Hadron Engine makes it reasonably strong, with Volt Switch and Tbolt gaining massive boosts. Trick punishes Heatran, VA Empoleon, VA Corviknight, and Goodra-H. This mon does need some support against Rmoon considering it resists both stabs so Tusk and Corv could be pretty good partners. Might battle with this at some point, so I might edit this later with some replays.

mrrm i eat gras (Rotom-Mow) @ Life Orb
Ability: Triage
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 252 SpA / 252 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Nasty Plot
- Leech Seed
- Matcha Gotcha
- Parabolic Charge

this mon actually sucks dont use it

i figured low HP works kind of well with leech seed so i started with that. and then hes outsped by everything so i had to do triage offensive

anyways he sucks cuz hes farmed by imposter and no stats but if you get around that then you can maybe troll not-mg blissey, pogre (i think), yveltal and steela after getting 4 nps idk how you'd do that go figure out yourself smh

BH HIJACK!!!! you thought you could keep us out? we cannot be deterred that easily

TERRARIA LAWN MOWER (Rotom-Mow) @ Life Orb
Ability: Triage

Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Strength Sap
- Nasty Plot
- Parabolic Charge
- Will-O-Wisp

anything with a unique typing and semi-real stats can never be *that* bad in bh. rotom-c has an interesting set of resistances including elec, water, grass, and elec again, while simultaneously (and very importantly) not being weak to ground. we also importantly have offensive elec at our disposal, an interesting typing with a lot of cool techs. i went for triage sap here, a theme that i really like because it emphasizes both defensive and offensive capabilities of the pokemon. the idea was to pair it with an offensive elec with some coverage that it didn't mind, so the elec could win games against much sturdier opponents while this guy handily deterred imposter.

EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 252 SpD
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 0 Spe
- Sticky Web
- Glare
- Topsy-Turvy
- U-turn

to that end, i decided to go with sd moldy zeraora with electric surge support. elec/ground with emphasis on the elec seemed cool and i hadn't really given it a try before. wisp rotom gives us something to do into imposter that's actually really helpful. the rest of this team was entirely free-built without much thought to the bigger picture beyond the basics of not losing to stuff. glastrier in snow is our ash gren check, webs is for sceptile, and kyogre sits there annoyingly posing somewhat of an offensive threat. kyogre rapid spin and glastrier lunar dance could probably be switched around.

i took this team for a whirl on ladder and got 2 games, both of which truly speak for themselves. all i'll say is that if you yearn to be driven mad by this game, these replays are for you.

Cool idea, hosted by even a cooler person fr
anyways im just gonna do the obvious and pick Stabmons (idk how many slashes u can have on a mon but..)

Rotom-Mow @ Life Orb / Choice Scarf

Tera Type: Electric

Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Electro Drift
- Apple Acid / Matcha Gotcha
- Torch Song / Nasty Plot
- Pain Split / Trick / Thunderclap
After a bit of consideration (and throwing my head at the wall) i made this set and with this team (https://pokepast.es/f8ada4f7c0253c89), basically the general idea here is to setup with either torch song or nasty plot and deal big damage, the torch song setup manages to 2hko Stuff like Ting-lu at +1, RegenVest Pex (if it switches in to torch directly then +1 ohkos), and even specially defensive ttar in sand at +1, the main problem with this set however isnt damage but mainly is its speed and non-reliable recovery as pain split is usually not enough, so u can alternatively run matcha gotcha, trading damage and a chance to miss for a burn chance and recovery, and for the speed problem stuff like running thunderclap last slot can help revenge kill weakened attackers and suprise opponents who may not expect it, or even run choice scarf to outspeed any pokemon that isnt boosting its Speed

replays (idk what to say now besides these games are on low ladder, i might edit to add more replays btw)

this thing defo needs some form of speed control support to get working, but it's probably fine, it has semi-real stats anyways

Noticed this place was stinking up with BH sets so thought it would be appropriate to show off the lawnmower in a REAL tier, aka Mix & Mega (this is a joke pls don't beat me up)

:bw/rotom-mow:
Rotom-Mow @ Diancite
Ability: Levitate
Tera Type: Electric
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Leaf Storm
- Thunderbolt
- Volt Switch
- Will-O-Wisp

This set aims to do what Altarianite Regieleki wishes it could; be an annoying Volt Switch pivot that can actually take on Ground-types. Normally, you'd slap on mons such as Arceus-Ground, Hippowdon, or Iron Treads in order to have a reliable switch-in into Altarianite Regieleki, but thanks to that STAB-boosted Leaf Storm Rotom-Mow has other plans:
  • 252 SpA Diancite Rotom-Mow Leaf Storm over 2 turns vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Metagrossite Iron Treads: 414-488 (107.8 - 127%) -- guaranteed KO in 2 turns
  • 252 SpA Diancite Rotom-Mow Leaf Storm over 2 turns vs. 240 HP / 252+ SpD Arceus-Ground: 482-572 (109.2 - 129.7%) -- guaranteed KO in 2 turns
  • 252 SpA Diancite Rotom-Mow Leaf Storm over 2 turns vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Sablenite Hippowdon: 478-566 (113.8 - 134.7%) -- guaranteed KO in 2 turns
Diancite is the Mega Stone of choice mostly due to the Speed it grants, letting Rotom-Mow actually outspeed stuff and get off Volt Switches it normally wouldn't while also being able to force out powerful threats such as Urshifu-R and Walking Wake. Move choices are pretty self-explanatory; Double STAB-moves, Volt Switch to be annoying and Will-O-Wisp last to potentially cripple/annoy switchins such as Eternatus, Dragonite, and Raging Bolt.

Not gonna post team since it was made with little effort but managed to showcase some of its potential in this game:
https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen9mixandmega-2169554260-lgl1mu9yox9n5rtswscwt9ke27yospppw
Here it is used together with Glalitite Regieleki to form an annoying VoltTurn core that can together break down defensive structures, and while Eleki is doing most of the heavy lifting here Rotom-Mow is still being helpful, even making use of Magic Bounce to reflect Rocks too. Don't ask about the rest of the team idk :worrywhirl:

gonna toss this in for fun cause why not, have an inheritance set :) honestly no rationale for this i just felt like submitting it. i believe all orphans deserve parents

Tier Shift! Rotom gets some pretty neat stats and has a niche over Hisuian Electrode by virtue of its better bulk and higher SpAtk, although it does have far less speed.

Quick team I made! It's a very offensive VoltTurn team, with a nasty core of Future Sight Munkidori + Choice Band Slither Wing to break past the opposing team, allowing Rotom to clean in the late game. Rotom also provides good speed control midgame so that's pretty cool.

With a whopping 16 votes, cityscapes has found Rotom-M it's home in Balanced Hackmons! Congratulations and welcome to the Hall of Fame!

Here's your next OM Orphan!

:sv/iron_thorns:

The OM Orphanage presents you with the timid-but-still-dangerous Iron Thorns!

Iron Thorns has a surprisingly expansive movepool, with supporting options like Spikes, Stealth Rock and Taunt alongside dangerous coverage moves such as Ice Punch, Low Kick, Earthquake and even Fire Punch for pesky Steel-types. It even has access to both Dragon and Swords Dance, allowing it to get even stronger! Reminiscent of its present day form, Iron Thorns even has a wide variety of special moves such as Ice Beam, Flamethrower, Earth Power and Focus Blast, even if it doesn't have the Special Attack to take good advantage of it. Iron Thorns' major movepool flaw, though, is being a physical attacking Electric-type. Both Wild Charge and Supercell Slam are questionable STAB moves at best, and on the Rock-type side of things, both Stone Edge and Rock Slide have their gripes. These two types also have no way to hit Ground-types for neutral damage without the addition of a coverage move, making the risk less worthwhile.

Iron Thorns also suffers from its typing defensively, as Rock/Electric has 4 weaknesses to some of the most common types in the game, including a 4x weakness to the omnipresent Earthquake. While it has 5 resistances and an immunity to paralysis, these are hardly enough to make up for it's multiple extremely exploitable weaknesses. Stat-wise, Iron Thorns suffers from middling Speed, making it hard to effectively set up and not even very fast once it has, low Special Attack preventing it from taking advantage of its best coverage, and average at best Special Defense. Iron Thorns does, however, possess solid physical bulk and an Attack stat rivaling Koraidon, so it's not all bad!

Iron Thorns tends to be underwhelming compared to both it's Paradox peers and to it's relative from present times, but can you find Mecha-Streisand a home of its own in OMs?
