Tournament OMCL I - Commencement

commencement is dead so lets spice things up with some eulogies.

The Gracedias, led by OM Leader April and Doubles mainstay zoe, started with full credits going into the auction. The managers opted not to selfbuy, instead focusing on supporting their team in AAA and PiC respectively. The team's star player is Rofna, who they bought for a whopping 22k. That might seem like a lot for a bum who doesn't build, but he's one of the best pool farmers in OM and boasts a 13-7 record on the OMPL sheet; provide him teams and he'll win games. Then they bought Betticus for 17k. Betticus is someone who's had deep individual runs on multiple occasions, but he hasn't been able to translate that success in team tours yet. In a pool as strong as AAA, 17k seemed overpriced, so it's on him to justify this pricetag. They bought 3 players for PiC--HiZo, jasprose, and ValiantValerie--for a combined 20k, though jasprose can provide value in ORAS PH as well. Expectations were high on this core to perform. They followed this by buying players like about15gals, Electra102, Nashrock and Clem for decent prices.

Rofna didn't disappoint--a 5-0 record across 5 tiers is absurd output for any team. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say Rofna was essentially the Gracedias' life support. And then things started going downhill. The rest of the roster couldn't keep pace. The second major buy, Betticus, ended up going 3-3 in AAA and Inh. That's obviously not a disastrous season--in fact there's a week left so he could still go positive--but it's simply not enough to provide the momentum the team needed. The PiC trio went 2-3. If you're spending 20k on 3 players for a single tier in a tour with over a dozen tiers, your core better dominate the competition or you're in for a suffering. Unfortunately, the latter was the case here, and the strategy didn't work out. The team had zoe for support, so they likely could've saved their credits for an anchor pick in another tier. Props to jasprose for the clean 2-0, though--they just didn't get enough chances to impact the season. The team relied far too heavily on 3k / low-cost buys to fill critical slots. That's not inherently a problem, but it becomes disastrous when none of them overperform. Many of the cheap buys juggled between tier changes every week, so it's fairly unreasonable to expect them to. about15gals and Electra102 played 4 tiers and both ended up with a couple of wins. Not bad for 3k, but it can't save the team. Clem and Rei both went negative and didn't really have much support afaik. The final blow was eeriespell and Ineros not notching a single win--going 0-4 and 0-5 respectively, again juggling between multiple tiers. It's just impossible for the team to recover from the 0-9, and all playoffs chances were killed.

Most people thought the Gracedias' weekly tier picks were confusing--and sure enough, they didn't seem to work out. Their draft did have strong players, but it lacked depth, with many of their better-priced players underperforming or not seeing the field at all. Chloe, their third most expensive buy at 10k, didn't play a game until week 6. They bought Fragments and HAVOCKNIGHT for a combined 15.5k, but they ended up not touching the sheet. Their overreliance on cheap buys bouncing around from slot to slot to outperform the competition proved to be fatal. When 8 of your players go negative, you know something went wrong. In the end, a better budget management and actual coverage across tiers might've saved them, but sometimes that's how it goes. The Gracedias head home.

Machamps eulogy later if I don't get killed for this

The long-awaited Machamps eulogy is now here. Lightniong asked me to be harsh but I'll have to rein it in a bit... that said, I'll keep things constructive. Note that this doesn't account for week 7 wins/losses

The Machamps are led by resident mocc enthusiasts prunyy and Lightniong. Though Light has shown flashes of brilliance in MnM here and there, both are relatively new to the OM [tournaments] scene and largely unproven, so they opted not to selfbuy. The 2 teams with 0 selfbuys ended up bottom 2... coincidence? Who knows. We are here to talk about the team. The star players of Machamps are Clas and xdRudi.exe. Clas is competent in many OMs, both ompl and non-ompl. At 14k, he was arguably a bargain, though you need to be pretty careful with who you buy with Clas. Rudi though, damn my man went for a lot. He's obviously a strong player, but my sources told me STAB is pretty MU fishy and hated by many, so investing 17.5k on it seemed like a gamble. I actually thought Rudi would play ABC; he had the potential to find some crazy hidden techs in the tier and farm the pool. Kaif has had a good year in OMs, making circuit and everything, so 9k felt rather cheap. The Machamps got good value there in theory. They also bought a strong PiC core of crow crumbs + LogIce and Inh TL Don Vascus.

The real star of the show was vnmmv, who put up an impressive 4-1 record in the circus that is Shared Power. Largely unknown going into the tournament, they for sure exceeded expectations by taking down several strong players. Their PiC core performed well too--crow crumbs posted a respectable 3-2 record, while LogIce went 2-1, with the latter also ending tkhanh's 4-win streak. Don Vascus put up a 2-2, not a bad showing but not as impactful as you'd want it to be. Their less expensive picks--Exguardian, lemonstre1, Mada, and Pokemh--each contributed 1 win, and hey, little drops make the mighty ocean. So, where did things go wrong? Well, none of the Machamps' aces lived up to expectations. Kaif played 3 tiers and put up a mediocre 2-4 overall--didn't see that coming but sometimes things just dont go your way. Clas and Rudi both skipped 2 weeks and finished (not really "finished" cuz w7 but yknow what I mean) with a disappointing 1-3 record. Now to be frank, the underperformance of these 2 (well, 3) effectively ended their season. The gamble didnt pay off. What's more, 6 more players--realExcaliju, LB, ANinjaDude, frankjosh, db, and Concept--also went negative (even if for some of them it's just 0-1), combining for an abysmal 2-11 overall.

The Machamps' season fell apart due to a combination of factors imo. The team had good coverage across non-ompl tiers with players like Clas, vnmmv, Don Vascus, and realExcaliju. The draft was fairly logical and I can definitely understand their key ideas. But as it turned out, it just wasn't the right plan. Investing in STAB didn't work out. More coverage in the [stable] ompl tiers would've likely helped, as it feels they leaned far too heavily on Clas and took a very relaxed approach while drafting. Clas also has his own game to prep for, so overreliance on him could easily lead to subpar results. Outside of STAB and PiC, they didn't have much. They picked up db for MnM, very experienced player obviously but afaik he's fairly out of touch with the meta and hasn't been particularly impressive in TTs either, sitting at 7-11 OMPL overall. Their ace players underperformed, and so did most of their cheaper buys. So yeah, with both ends of the roster falling short, their playoffs dreams were quickly shattered. The Machamps unfortunately had to pack up and go home.

Aaaand that's it. If you enjoyed reading this, drop a react cuz im mega broke after 2 likeshops and have like 1 rn LOL. Rest of the eulogies will be done by my secretary Chessking345 pannu
