Heeeello! Your bored statistician with too much free time due to vacations that he doesnt know what to do with is back!
After another long session of self hate (these numbers dont put themselves in place) I have some cool conclusions to bring to you!
This post is a continuation to this post on commencement, in case u havent seen it.
Like Jack the Ripper once said, lets do it by pieces.
First, I present to you the main stats in which I was interested from the start. Do nicknamed teams win more on OMs? For these reason I have compiled all battles of this OMPL and have made a list recording all battles that feature and nicknamed team vs a non-nicknamed team, taking a look at the result.
Here is the full stats I made if u wanna look through them: numbersnumbersnumbers
The logic followed for this part of the stats is as follows:
-At least half of the members in the team have to be nicknamed to be counted as a nicknamed team
-Battles where both players dont nickname, or both players nickname have not been counted (on this part of the post, look further if you are insterested)
-Temp (idk why I couldnt ping your smogon) replays dont count, because he thinks that putting "The" before the dex name of a pokemon is cool and it isnt
-Same goes for Taka , putting the stat your mons get gifted in GG is not putting nicknames, its being an utilitarian bastard. *Note: They mended their ways; tried to nickname on week 4, lost, and then proceeded to not nickname for the rest of the tour.
Lets not wait anymore, lets comment on this lil bit:
Whats this! With a sample size of 112 we have enough to make what could be considered an accurate representation of an event (it depends a lot on the case, but for context, data and statistics tend to normalize (show the ""real"" percentage) from ~35 sample size onwards). And what comes, there is a noticeable difference on the winrate of nicknamed teams vs not nicknamed teams.
The winrate of nicknamed teams is ~59% (not too far from the 60% measured during my first post on commencement)
While there isnt a way to 100% pin the reason of this on something, my conclusion (educated guess, at best) is that players that nickname their team tend to spend more time on builder/are better players because they can spare the time. It is true that this answer leaves behind some astoundingly proficient players like Ivar57 who never nickname teams, but this is likely an outliner rather than the rule.
For this reason, if you from now onwards decide to nickname ur teams to win more im afraid it wont work like that...
Great players make great nicknames, but great nicknames dont make great players or something idk im not a phylosopher.
Still, I encourage any reader to nickname their teams, I think its a process that is cool, lets you get "closer" to teams as they feel more familiar and personal, and removes a bit this cold numbers-rng-reads allowing us a warmer aproach and to show a lil bit more of our personality to our fellow players.
I have found that nicknaming is very metagame-specific with strong biases shown depending on the main metas of a player, though we will explore that a bit more in dept a lil later. I do not know the reason of this, nor do I have any idea of what it could be.
I dont know, maybe on a personal level players with a certain personality are atracted to certain metas, and those same traits provoke uninterest for nicknames? Would that even make sense? Im probably stretching it too hard though.
Chaaaging topics, another thing I wanted to check in this second post is that if my initial post influenced in any way the amount of nicknamed teams that show up. For this reason, we have this data:
While it is true that BH, GG and MNM increased very slightly nickname usage, it is nowhere near enough a relevant increase to consider any external bias due to my post. In addition to this, AAA, INH, PIC and STAB saw a slight decay on the usage of nicknames (kinda steep on STAB tho).
For this reason I must conclude that my first post was nowhere near as metachanging as I would have hoped and I had no impact on nickname usage.
Great, my day is ruined, I guess I will be crying myself to sleep this night.
Third part of the post! And hopefully a lil less depressing; usage of nicknames, divided by metagames:
(you can check a week-by-week breakdown on the full sheet)
wow! All metagames seem to have strong biases towards nicknaming or not nicknaming. It is true that in this case, for this statistic, sample size is kinda smoll, and as such it is not meant to represent the full metagame.
Still we can see how metagames like BH or INH attract strong nickname usage whule metagames like AAA and STAB see very little use.
An important note that I would make here, and is not represented in these numbers, is a Bo3 players, for some reason, have a strong bias towards not nicknaming their teams. I think this is part of the reason that MNM, STAB and AAA boast these low nicknaming percentages.
Final part of the post! The awards!
-The award of the most boring playerbase (because they dont nickname their teams) goes to the entire AAA metagame, boasting only 15.79% nickname usage, it shows thatbrainrot lazyness is getting to the players minds, congratulations! (im joking, love yall nerds, but nickname something from time to time pls)
Honorable mention to STAB metagame, u were close to getting this award.
-The award to the most beautiful, smart, clever, sexy, resilitent and charming playerbase goes to BH! They boast 69.35% showing that they may be running out of players, but never out of creativity. Congratulations!
Honorable mention to INH playerbase, u were pretty close of getting this award.
-The award to the most average, mid, divided playerbase goes to PIC! You guys need to get your shit together, either nickname a lot or dont but these middle grounds help no-one. It also surprises me how the most 'weird ass teams and meta with lot of things to happen' has the most average result, life is sometimes a mystery. Congratulations!
-In a two way tie (or for others... a normal tie) we have GG and MNM! Congratulations on having a result so boring I cant really make a joke about it.
-The award to the best nicknames goes to Career Ended, I really like how they nicknamed all their teams and seemed to get enough of their neurons to work to get nicknames that fit the mons at hand, with some puns here and there. We should all learn a lil from this guy.
-The award to the worst nicknames goes to Icemaster. Though i have to say this was a hard award to give, as competition was very tough, Icemaster proved to be the best worst nicknamer in the pool with a complete spectrum from 'mid' nicknames to 'why did we let this guys participate at all' nicknames, passing through not nicknaming at all some weeks bcuz he prob ran out of creativity, pretty understandable, as as that level of nicknaming is not easy to mantain.
-The award to the most handsome player goes to XxLazzerpenguinxX ; this should not need an explanation.
I hope yall enjoyed this post and my its-4am-and-I-havent-gotten-a-single-gram-of-sleep ramblings, I hope yall a good day, night or whatever, dont take life too seriously, enjoy what you do, be it playin mons or whatever and always nickname ur pokemons.
Adios!
(Thanks to Chessking345 for giving me code to go assisted through the replays, it helped a lot and there are non-zero chances that it prevented a suicide)
