Onix
Rock/Ground-type
[Overview]

Onix is one of the lucky Pokemon who like Licktung and Murkrow, received a evolution in a later generation and was originally designed to have stats up to par with Pokemon in their last stage of evolution. With massive Defense, great Speed, and a wide movepool, Onix can fulfill numerous roles on a team. Onix can act as a reliable Stealth Rock user due to Sturdy, which allows Onix to survive a hit that would normally OHKO at full health. A drawback to this rocky snake is that he sports mediocre HP and Special Defense stats making him susceptible to special moves such as Scald or Surf. All in all, Onix can find a spot in to nearly any team that is looking for something from a good sweeper to a useful wall.</ p>
[SET]
name: Support
move 1: Stealth Rock
move 2: Dragon Tail
move 3: Stone Edge
move 4: Earthquake / Protect
item: Eviolite
ability: Sturdy
nature: Careful
evs: 236 HP / 116 Def / 156 SpD
[SET COMMENTS]

Onix has the Speed and the moves to run a spectacular Stealth Rock set. Dragon Tail, a new move , works quite like Roar, but does damage in addition to forcing a switch, but also has negative priority like Roar. Coverage over almost every Pokemon in the metagame. Protect can be used to block Fake Out Pokemon such as Meowth from ruining Sturdy.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

This set is very useful at countering many of the common Pokemon that like to set up. Dragon Tail forces the opponent to switch Earthquake and Stone Edge are the two primary STAB moves and they each get perfect neutral , which will cause the boosts to be lost. As previously mentioned, Sturdy is a useful ability allowing Onix to live a hit from full HP with at least one health. Eviolite is a great item to have boosting Onix's already insane Defense to an amazing 36, allowing Onix to take Physical attacks with ease. Careful boosts Special Defense, but most special attacks will still easily OHKO Onix, so running Impish is a alternative to boost Onix's amazing Defense. Despite the power drop Explosion received this generation, it can also be run. Hippopotas can set up Sandstorm, which Onix is immune to and will boost his below average Special Defense and cause some damage to some Pokemon.

[SET]
name: Rock Polish
move 1: Rock Polish
move 2: Earthquake
move 3: Stone Edge
move 4: Explosion
item: Life Orb / Eviolite
ability: Sturdy
nature: Adamant
evs: 236 Atk / 236 SpD / 36 Spe
[SET COMMENTS]

Rock Polish, it seems as if every single Rock-type runs it and why not? It's very effective, giving Onix plus two Speed allows it to outspeed every Choice Scarf Pokemon that doesn't have at least 26 Speed is something. Earthquake and Stone Edge are Onix's two primary STAB attacks and get great neutral coverage on many Pokemon. Despite the power drop Explosion received, it still proves useful in many situations allowing Onix to KO or bring down to low health many Pokemon not running the Eviolite in sacrifice of it's own life.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Sturdy is great to do a decent chuck to Pokemon with Eviolite. A good teammate for this set is Ferroseed, with access to many hazards will help increase the effectiveness of for guaranteeing that Onix will be able to set up a Rock Polish at full health. Eviolite is a great choice to help Onix pull off a Rock Polish, but the power drop from the lack of Life Orb is noticeable. Natu is a great partner for Onix, easily setting up Screens to allow Onix to set up with ease. Hippopotas can also help Onix set up by setting up Sandstorm, boosting Onix's mediocre Special Defense.

[Other Options]

Rock Blast can be used to break Substitute. Onix has a reasonably high Speed so a Choice Band set is viable , raising his low Attack stat to a decent level. With the same base power in both offensive stats, a MixLifeOrb set would work well, allowing Onix to hit Physical walls who expect to wall Onix with ease.

[Checks and Counters]

Onix didn't get the best typing despite it's great defenses. Not only does Rock and Ground give Onix a times four weakness to Water and Grass attacks , but it also sports four other weaknesses of common typing such as Fighting and Ground. Snover can easily switch in on anything Onix can use besides Stone Edge and KO with Blizzard or Giga Drain. Frillish can come in and Scald Onix for the KO. Meditite has not only a massive Attack stat of 28, but also super effective priority moves that make Onix a easy kill no matter what Speed it is at. Bronzor is immune to Ground with Levitate and resists Rock and can easily take down Onix with Gyro Ball. Gligar is immune to Ground and doesn't take too much damage from Rock and at the same time is able to outspeed and attack with a STAB super-effective Earthquake.

[Dream World]

Onix got a decent ability from the Dream World. Weak Armour raises Speed in exchange for lowering defense when attacked. While this could prove useful on a Choice set it is not as appealing as the cons outweigh the pros considering the common priority attacks.
