Ononokusu

Status: Done, needs feedback.

------------------------------------------

[Overview]
  • One of only 2 pure fully evolved Dragon type Pokemon.
  • Incredible Attack with decent Speed make it a fearsome sweeper.
  • Near perfect coverage with Dragon + Ground moves thanks to its ability, Mold Breaker.
  • Ability to destroy Stall with Swords Dance, Offense with Dragon Dance, or damage both with Choice Band.
  • Very prone to getting revenge killed due to its only average bulk.
[SET]
name: Dragon Dance
move 1: Dragon Dance
move 2: Outrage
move 3: Earthquake
move 4: Taunt / Dragon Tail
item: Life Orb
ability: Mold Breaker
nature: Jolly
evs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe

Set Description:
  • Dragon Dance boosts Ononokusu's Speed enough to beat every single non scarfed Pokemon in the game, while beating every Base 95 Positive Nature Scarfer, while boosting its already sky high Attack to a whole new level.
  • Excellent coverage with 2 moves thanks to Mold Breaker, while the last one destroys the Pokemon that resists the combination, Skarmory.
  • Works by getting a Dragon Dance up on something that can't hurt Ononokusu, and immediately start attacking with boosted Outrage and Earthquake, as even Pokemon that resist Outrage will be hurt extremely hard, sometimes getting 2HKOd with Layers.
Additional Comments:
  • Ononokusu's movepool leaves it with only those options for the movepool, as its very shallow.
  • Adamant is possible over Jolly to hit harder.
  • Earthquake things like Gengar, Bronzong, Metagross and the Steel types, Outrage everything else.
  • Last spot is a combat between Taunt and Dragon Tail. Dragon Tail destroys Skarmory and can lead to great use of Layers, while Taunt shuts down Status moves that may want to stop Ononokusu, while also beating phazers.
Teammates & Counters:
  • Wobbuffet is an excellent partner as it stops Ononokusu's biggest threat, Scarfed revenge killers.
  • Steel types are good partners as they can take Ice and Dragon moves directed to Ononokusu. Metagross, Scizor, and Skarmory specially, as they can beat the common Scarfed dragons, Garchomp and Flygon.
  • Layers are important if youre using Dragon Tail, so Skarmory is a very welcomed member.
  • Ononokusu cant be countered, so its better if you just try to revenge kill it. Things like Scarfed Garchomp, Flygon, Salamence, Palkia, as well as strong Ice Shard or Bullet Punch users can dispatch Ononokusu.
[SET]
name: Swords Dance
move 1: Swords Dance
move 2: Outrage
move 3: Earthquake
move 4: Taunt / Dragon Tail
item: Life Orb
ability: Mold Breaker
nature: Jolly
evs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe

Set Description:
  • Seems familiar? Same as the Dragon Dance set, except this one does more damage at the expense of the Speed boost that may let it sweep.
  • Meant to act as a wallbreaker, not a sweeper, as the Dragon Dancer pulls that better thanks to the Speed boost.
  • Hits everything incredibly hard. Even the bulkiest Steel type will always be 2HKOd by a +2 Outrage boosted by Life Orb.
Additional Comments:
  • EV spread is self explanatory, max Speed and Attack because thats what Ononokusu needs in order to do as much damage as possible.
  • Dragon Tail and Taunt are both viable, depends on whether you want to phaze or block Status.
  • Even more prone to getting revenge killed by other Pokemon.
Teammates & Counters:
  • Same teammates as the Dragon Dance set.
  • Again, it cant be countered, only revenge killed, and although this variant of Ononokusu hits way harder, its easier to revenge kill since now things without a Scarf can work it too.
[SET]
name: Choice Band
move 1: Outrage
move 2: Dragon Claw
move 3: Earthquake
move 4: Brick Break / Rock Slide
item: Choice Band
ability: Mold Breaker
nature: Adamant / Jolly
evs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe

Set Description:
  • With a Choice Band it reaches a quite impressive Attack number, letting it beat everything with STAB Outrage or a Super Effective Earthquake.
  • Perfect coverage with those 4 moves, while Dragon Claw is used if you dont want to get locked into Outrage too early, as it still hits very hard.
  • Used to hit and run, you use Outrage or Earthquake and immediately switch out, unless youre sure you will manage to do more damage at that point rather than later.
Additional Comments:
  • Moveset is self explanatory. Outrage, Earthquake, and Dragon Claw are pretty much musts, while the last spot is a filler move that rarely will find any use.
  • Adamant is used for a boost on power that lets you 2HKO Skarmory after 2 Stealth Rock switch ins, while Jolly gives you speed to beat everything up to Gliscor.
  • Must be careful on when to use Outrage, as a Metagross or Bronzong may come in and KO Ononokusu.
  • Again, prone to getting revenge killed with ease.
Teammates & Counters:
  • Things that love weakened stuff to pick off. Basically powerful Priority users, like Infernape, Scizor, and Dragonite.
  • Wobbuffet can be used to knock out Scarfed Pokemon again.
  • Spikes and Stealth Rock support is even more important on this one as it lets Ononokusu do all the damage possible, sometimes ending on KOs that it wasnt able to get before.
[Team Options]
  • Basically everything that enjoys a Physical wall down, as more often than not Ononokusu will take it down or make it take huge damage.
  • Wobbuffet is important as it can KO Scarfers.
  • Layer set uppers like Skarmory, Nattorei, and Omastar are great as they give Ononokusu the chance to 2HKO things that it wasn't able to before.
[Optional Changes]
  • Rivalry over Mold Breaker, as it can give Ononokusu a little boost in power, but Mold Breaker is usually much better.
  • Toxic is a Status move that Ononokusu gets, though dont expect it to do much.
[Counters]
  • Ononokusu has no counters, as everything will fall to a +2 Earthquake or Outrage.
  • The best you can aim for is catching it on the Set Up, which is very risky, to kill it with a faster Pokemon before it can do any damage.
  • Priority users like Weavile, Mamoswine, and Scizor can beat a weakened Ononokusu.
[Dream World]
  • Ononokusu gets Tension as its Dream World ability, which doesn't let the opponent eat its berry. Worse than Mold Breaker and Rivalry by far, though.

Nattorei and Skarmory need mentions as near 100% counters to the DDer and CBer at least. Its true that the SDer cant be technically countered due to the sheer power but the DD/CBer sure can.

Anyway the DDer is by far the most common set as its alot harder to revenge kill and yes Skarmory does win despite Taunt because Drill Peck 3hko's and Brave Bird 2hko's with SR up, along with LO recoil you dont win despite Taunt. Nattorei just massacres you with Gyro Ball whilst DD LO EQ does not 2hko physically def Nattorei back.

Maybe slash in Double Chop on the Choice Band sets if you want to break a Sub and keep attacking? The 90% accuracy is a deterrent, but it at least deserves a slash.

Would a choice scarf set be worth it? Or is it just better to stick with choice band?

Garchomp does the job a bit better due to similar damage output, higher (and not to mention conveniently trollish) speed, and dual STAB in the form of Dragon + Ground.

I wouldn't put down Scarf Onono due to Mold Breaker, but I'm still under the impression Garchomp does this better due to outspeeding Dragon Dance Salamence.

The DD set however can run Dragon Tail to phaze. If Skarmory comes in on its Outrage, I believe it can be beat Skarmory before it can be KOed, if it doesn't hurt itself confusion. If Skarmory comes in on EQ, it can be Dragon Tailed out, giving a Free hit on another Pokemon and putting itself in 3KO range (or maybe 2KO with SR, though not sure), meaning it will take out Skarmory before Skarmory takes out it if Skarmory is running Drill Peck (though Brave Bird recoil also might allow this). Obviously Roost makes a lot of this irrelevant if played correctly, but it is worth noting.

Though Skarmory definitely does laugh at the CB set. I mean its a 4KO at best, so saying there are no counter is obviously wrong.

Addtionally, while not exactly a counter or a revenge kill, for the SD set at least a few of pokemon can switch in on the SD and OHKO before getting attacked. However this suffers from not working since you wont know what set it is until it uses a move, and then it is too late. And if you guess wrong you just got killed.

EDIT:
Oh, I just came up with another potential way to counter the DD and definitely the CB set. A defensive Cobalon (Or whatever his name is) can come in on a Outrage. At max HP/Def it would take 4 hits from Outrage to KO. Meanwhile it can Metal Burst the Outrages back for a 2KO. Now he does take significant damage in the process, but it works. The success rate really only depends on the length of Outrage. If you switch in on hit 1, then you will win if it lasts 3 turns. If it only lasts 2 turns then you can be taken out by the DD set if he tries his luck with confusion, but the CB set will be forced to either switch or be KOed. But this all depends on getting in on Outrage.

Actually, now that I do some calcs, I believe it can come in on a DD, take 1 EQ and Metal Burst back for a OHKO. (Though im not sure if metal burst an attacking move. As in: can it be blocked with taunt?)

I seem to remember that Sazandora/Sazando had 1 base speed higher. If so, Scarf Sazandora/Sazando was born to troll DD dance Ononkusu.
