this is a complete failure on the hosts behalf, and obviously on the act fisher. there has to be a certain point where the host steps in and tells the person who has notoriously fished for act wins that no, he can't request an act on a monday. Technically it might break the rules, but in a tournament like this, we should follow the spirit, not just the letter of the law.

it's also pretty strange that the Smogon community as a whole is still letting this player participate when he has shown time and time again he does not try to complete his games in good faith, and this is another glaring example.

I feel bad for MANNAT but I would do the same thing if the host is giving me a loss on a monday lmao

Mannat offered to reschedule at his opponent wished time on a MONDAY, I'm glad not to take Invitationals (copy-paste glazing competitions) seriously, that shows once more people do not play in those for the love of the game.

I don’t want there to be acts in an invitational, so be more careful
Indeed you want. The guy who claimed the act is notorious for doing anything he can not to play the game, not giving the act is at your discretion, you're the host not a bot.

Nobody likes to wait until their opponent shows up, I get it, but let's look at the circumstances at what happened here:
  • MANNAT had an emergency situation come up, something that is unforeseen and should always take priority over a Pokemon game (or any game for that matter)
  • The game was originally scheduled for Monday, meaning that there was still a whole week to play
  • MANNAT had offered to reschedule and accommodate their opponent - off topic but their opponent didn't even act sympathetic
While I understand the rules about activity wins, there are some other considerations here:
  • In some team tournaments, the hosts will ensure that the match is played later in the week, even if said player is entitled to an activity win, to ensure that all games can be played (and then obviously a sub would be called)
  • It sets a bad precedent on the host as it emboldens this behaviour and players in that community (e.g. ORAS in this example) know they can get away with similar actions for ORAS Seasonals, ORAS Cup, ORASPL etc
  • It doesn't look good on said player acting like this from a manager perspective, for future team tournaments such as SCL, SPL, etc
The invitationals doesn't even have a CA or similar prize, so I'm not sure what the point in claiming act on a Monday is unless you're absolutely busy that week, where then you would either request an extension or just not accept the invite at all.

Hopefully there can be a new policy in place where activity wins won't be considered for games that aren't scheduled before Wednesday (similar to sub deadlines in tours) - I believe there was a similar situation in Masters last Monday.

i remember before all the calls for policies on early act we had this thing called “basic decency” that covered it instead. it’s people like avarice who, in abusing the goodwill of the community while lending no such goodwill themselves, suck the basic decency out of the tour scene. don’t forget it!

I’m making the boss call that enough dogpiling has happened.

Instead, I’m quite confused over the host call. It’s astounding that that a player came in to replace mannat for this round after activity had already been given. Then, they rescheduled. Why was the act call even allowed in the first place if the hosts are completely fine with forcing a new match-up in the first place?

I gotta wonder if no drama woulda happened at all if the host stuck by the integrity of the tournament / spirit of the game or whatever and just asked them to make the game happen?

I appreciate all the work hosts do, truly, given all the nonsense they have to put up with. But, I hope that what results from this situation is that hosts stop blindly following rules and precedents and start considering the Context of these situations. Fuck the rules mannat literally had an emergency situation. There should never be a world where “ah, shit. Past decision says I’m not allowed to do anything about it. Oh, well” is a real thing. Make the baws call and say “Sorry this is inconveniencing you. We’re still going to have to ask you to play due to this specific circumstance.”

I doubt an influx of lying will happen, but it’s worth noting that the parties involved here are long time players. Afaik Mannat doesn’t have a history of fudging scheduling, but using context you’ll know that HAXORUS_DAGOD surely hasn’t had 5 medical emergencies in a month’s span (hopefully) to explain why he missed a time. Context + accounting for humanity should be much more valued than they are currently on this site

Agreed with lax that the dogpiling has run its course and should stop. Future posts will be deleted.

Since my name is listed as a host I figure I should say something really quick; I am basically only here for act calls involving the other hosts. My personal opinion is always towards getting games done in an invitational, and people who know me know my personal policy is that monday act calls rarely if ever stand in non-officials.

I was not consulted before the call was made on this particular case but I also think the host call was not that egregious. There are times to stick with the "by the book" call, especially for newer hosts. I also think Ruffles and co should stop getting shit for the call; they're newer to hosting and obviously trying very hard to make a tour for the community and have it go well. Think they've got the lesson down by now.

Last thing is that once MANNAT dropped and Hacker took his place, reversing that was rightfully impossible. You can argue (elsewhere, not here) that that never should have happened, but once it was done it was done. I'm glad avarice and MANNAT's replacement ended up playing for this round.

Anyways, I hope we can move on and enjoy the rest of the tour going forward. Good luck to the remaining competitors.

I acknowledge my decision was hasty, too unbiased, and de-contextualized. I'm obviously new to hosting and wasn't even aware of discretionary hosting. I was PM'd by both players to resolve this while I was at work and the other ORAS mods weren't online. Sat on it a couple of hours and made the decision. I should have consulted an experienced host in hindisght. Mannat asked me to drop shortly after the decision, and after making a sub it was too late to reverse. I appreciate the constructive criticism and will take it forward, and as I mentioned we will have more anti-activity calls decisions especially early in the week. After all I just want to be a vessel for what the community wants.

That being said I want to go back to enjoying the spirit of the tour as both a viewer and competitor. We already had a fun series happen, courtesy of my homie Hacker

Cheers
