A lure is defined as; Any Pokémon that manages to draw out, or "lure" and eliminate an opponent's Pokémon, without sacrificing their main role by a significant margin. This compendium will act as a resource, showcasing common lures in the ORAS OU tier.

Rules
1. Stick to Pokemon on the OU Viability Rankings. Pokemon such as Aurorus or Ninjask which are not ranked should not be discussed here.
2. When posting a lure, explain why the lure you have nominated works well.
3. Don't theorymon. Post Pokemon that you have had experience with.
4. Be considerate of others when posting, and only post when necessary ie. try not to post one-liners.
5. Calcs are nice, but not compulsory.
6. Do not nominate a lure that will otherwise limit the effectiveness of that Pokemon.

I think M-Lopunny and Feraligatr should be added to Iron Tail users in the Clefable lures section. Ferrothorn is lured in by HP Fire M-Diancie, Jirachi lures in a ton of stuff on here, most notably the likes of Garchomp, Landorus, Hippowdon, Heatran, Scizor, Gliscor. I don't really get why Focus Punch Breloom is listed as a lure to Jirachi, Feraligatr can also be added as a crunch user to lure in Slowbro, Garchomp can lure in Charizard-Y with Rock slide too. Great job :D

Iron Tail Torn-T is a good lure that hits Clefable, M-Diancie, and M-Altaria (M-Diancie is the big one). Being able to outspeed and OHKO a top threat like M-Diancie is nice. Torn-T should also be added in the HP Ice section since SpDef Gliscor can comfortably switch in and wall AV Torn-T without it. Hope these suggestions help :]

Hi not going to lie but the formatting is pretty weird, if I want to know what can lure Skarmory, I have to first look up its viability, then come here and look for the right tab. Not to mention viability rankings change all the time, much prefer an alphabetical listing.

HP Fire / Aura Sphere Raikou can lure Ferrothorn, Excadrill
Stone Edge Bisharp can lure Talonflame, both Charizards, Zapdos, Tornadus-T, Volcarona, Dragonite, Thundurus, Gyarados.

I agree with yuruuu the way things are listed. Since viability will change it might be easier to just keep it alphabetical so you don't need to follow ranking updates. Easier for users to track down as well.

Please add a description to the OP ASAP. I just got confused and thought it was a different type of thread ._.

Alright
  • You've got Bisharp listed twice
  • I'd personally slash Stone Edge with Rock Slide on Gligar's entry for luring MCharY (who's also listed twice)
  • Iron Tail Thundy is pretty awful when you can lure Fairies with SWave and Grass Knot is a legit good option if you want to decimate MDiance. I'd remove it.
  • Poison Jab and Iron Head Garchomp isn't that good since EQ does really similar damage to the targets ie. Clefable and MAlt
  • Empoleon and Excadrill are combined in the second hide tag
  • I'd consider removing Sylveon if we're doing this by viability for obvious reasons
  • Earthquake Latios can't 2HKO Mega Metagross, use HP Fire
  • Add Smack Down Landorus-T to Rotom-W and Skarmory
And there are a few of these I wouldn't even consider luring and this is purely at your own discretion and why should be pretty obvious.

Scolipede, Toxicroak, Mega Sharpedo, Lucario, Mega Gallade, Empoleon, and Mega Beedrill.

Ok. So it took me ages to get the formatting right. Massive shoutout to OrdA who helped me a ton with the BB Code Editor, because frankly the Smogon text editor sucks. It creates so much useless filler, and ruins the formatting.

As far as changes, I'm going to reiterate this is meant to be a resource, and as such, I'm not adding lures that are incredibly niche.

Anyways, let me reply to all the suggestions.

  • I don't think I've ever seen Iron Tail Lop or Gatr. If you can find a high level replay of someone using either of these to success, I'll consider adding them, but they seem far to niche considering most anaylsis wouldn't even mention them.
  • Added HP Fire Mega Diancie for Ferro
  • I'll work on adding lure Jirachi in, good shout.
  • Crunch has 84.262% usage, and is the second most common move on Feraligatr behind Waterfall. Crunch is not a lure. Also, no one should be switching Zard Y in on Garchomp, that's not a lure either.
  • I'll add Iron Tail Torn-T as a Mega Diancie lure, but I'm not adding it for Clefable, Mega Altaria because neither Clefable or Mega Altaria should be switching into Life Orb Tornadus (the only variant which can 2HKO with Iron Tail). I'm torn (pun not intended) on HP Ice Tornadus-T, so I'll get back to you on that one.

Stone Edge Bisharp can lure Talonflame, both Charizards, Zapdos, Tornadus-T, Volcarona, Dragonite, Thundurus, Gyarados.
  • I made the formatting alphabetical order. I was just doing off of the VRs initially because I didn't want to miss any Pokemon when making the list
  • Added Aura Sphere Raikou for Exca, Ferro, and TTar.
  • Similar to the situation with Iron Tail Lopunny.Gatr. I don't think I've ever seen Stone Edge Bisharp used to success, except once as a Scarf user on a WQ team. I won't be adding this unless theres evidence suggesting this is effective in a competitive format.
Alright

  • Yeah a lot of the formatting was broken, it was a WIP but I think I've fixed it all now, and there should be no repeats.
  • Iron Tail is for physical Thundurus, although I guess it's not that common, I could remove it.
  • Garchomp's +2 Life Orb Poison Jab/Iron Head OHKOs DDD M-Alt, Earthquake has very little chance to do so, therefore this lure is effective. Also PJab, and Iron Head both hit Togekiss too.
  • Got rid of EQ Latios for Mega Metagross, I didn't know it did so little, thanks.
  • I'm always hesitant about Smack Down seeming that the Rotom/Skarmory user can just switch out to another Ground immunity/resist, however I guess I'll consider adding it seeming that I've heard of it working out before.

Thanks everyone for the feedback.

BD return Azumarill is a good lure for amoonguss and mega Venusaur .

Btw.. its a very useful thread ;)

This isn't true at all. I ran the calcs and (if you did?) you'd see that Earthquake has a 31.3% chance to OHKO DDD Alt without the aid of Stealth Rock while Poison Jab has a better 75% chance. However if you factor in Stealth Rock or any form of passive damage whatsoever you'd see that Earthquake OHKOes it.

+2 252 Atk Life Orb Garchomp Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 136+ Def Mega Altaria: 316-372 (89.5 - 105.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock
+2 252 Atk Life Orb Garchomp Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 136+ Def Mega Altaria: 316-372 (89.5 - 105.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO after 1 layer of Spikes

Sand does 1/16 damage which would also be enough to get rid of it and status damage as well. With the prevalence of entry hazards I'd say it's not an effective lure at all. And concerning Togekiss Stone Edge / Rock Slide is obviously a thing that offers so much more coverage an Iron Head or Poison Jab. And it's funny you stressed how it beats Togekiss, yet you didn't list it ?_? surprise surprise it's Stone Edge you've got up there.

Just so this isn't some savage rant (and I guess you aren't removing niche Pokemon to lure)

Nitpicks
  • You still have Bisharp listed twice
  • Fire Blast from Mega Altaria already roasts Amoonguss (which isn't listed btw), but I see merit in Outrage on Roost + DD Sets, but they aren't effective anymore (idrk) This applies to Klefki too.
  • I'd slash regular Alakazam with all Mega Zam entries
  • You might want to put sprites for Dragonite's entry and Latios is still mentioned to lure Mega Metagross with EQ
  • I don't really agree with Aura Sphere Raikou since it's at an influential speed tier. Hidden Power Fire would be more appropriate
  • Add Torn-T to Icy Wind users esp. for Gligar. Iron Tail Torn-T for Mega Gardevoir as well (AV users use this since Hurri is piss weak)
  • On the Gliscor point, just use Stone Edge and remove mention of Rock Slide since it'd fit more seeing as you have it luring KyuB already
Lures
  • Earthquake or Iron Tail Mega Charizard Y for MDiancie since it's listed for Heatran. Iron Tail also lures Mega Alt.
  • Fire Blast and Fire Punch Tyranitar and Mega Tyranitar lure Ferrothorn respectively. I guess Superpower works too.
  • Grass Knot Bisharp lures Quagsire and is legit good.
  • Add Gyarados to NG Fire for Mega Scizor
  • Fire Punch Jirachi for Ferro and Mega Sciz. Ice Punch for Garchomp and Lando.
  • Thunder Punch Mega Medicham for Slowbro

Focus Blast Keldeo also hits Rotom-W. I am not entirely sure about STAB being a good lure though.
Specs already 2HKOs after Rocks, while Life Orb still does about 43% (enough to 2HKO it when it comes in again). It's not necessary, plus you can always just fish for Scald burns.

uh no it is kind of the only reason to run focus blast, because slowbro (?_? just run a hidden power) and alomomola are the only other listed targets here. tell me again if you are running focus blast keldeo because you think your team is weak to alomomola...

  • I'm always hesitant about Smack Down seeming that the Rotom/Skarmory user can just switch out to another Ground immunity/resist, however I guess I'll consider adding it seeming that I've heard of it working out before.
Something I've seen on occasion is Gravity Lando-T, which arguably works better than Smack Down because it doesn't go away if the foe switches. Not really sure how common/viable this actually is, though.

Another suggestion I have is HP Fighting Lati@s to lure Bisharp; it OHKOes while HP Fire does not. Might also work for Heatran, although it doesn't hit much else.

heatran: focus blast clefable
hoopa-u: signal beam alakazam (gleam ain't doing shit), signal beam raikou
celebi: signal beam alakazam, signal beam raikou, signal beam kingdra
mega diancie: hp steel m-pidgeot
skarmory / slowbro: wild charge diggersby
clefable is out of alphabetical order
quagsire: grass knot bisharp
jirachi: knock off venusaur
kyurem-b: remove stone edge gliscor, it doesn't do jackshit

nice thread. ^please implement n_n

A few suggestions:
  • Thunder Wave Rotom-W for the Latis, Clefable and MZard-X
  • Fire Blast Tyranitar for (M)Scizor and Ferrothorn
  • Will-O-Wisp MGardevoir for MMetagross, Jirachi, Scizor and Skarmory
  • Surf Latios for Tyranitar, Heatran, MDiancie and Gliscor
  • Natural Gift [Ice] Talonflame for Landorus-T, Garchomp, Gliscor and Dragonite
  • Hidden Power Ice Tornadus-T for the same mons as above
I'm also not sure why Earth Power Diancie is listed, as it's the most common 4th move ran on Diancie. Cool thread though!

Suggesting that Grass Knot Bisharp be added as a lure for Quagsire. Regardless of lonely vs. hasty, KOff+Grass Knot is a guaranteed kill on it, which is big as otherwise it just kinda cockblocks Bisharp.
PhysDef Quag:
252 Atk Life Orb Bisharp Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Quagsire: 161-191 (40.8 - 48.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
4 SpA Life Orb Bisharp Grass Knot (80 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Quagsire: 286-338 (72.5 - 85.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Curse Quag:
252 Atk Life Orb Bisharp Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 248 HP / 184+ Def Quagsire: 172-203 (43.7 - 51.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
4 SpA Life Orb Bisharp Grass Knot (80 BP) vs. 248 HP / 76 SpD Quagsire: 260-307 (66.1 - 78.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
Also suggesting Aerial Ace Bisharp be added as a Keldeo and Breloom lure:
252+ Atk Life Orb Bisharp Aerial Ace vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Keldeo: 198-234 (61.3 - 72.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Life Orb Bisharp Sucker Punch vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Keldeo: 99-117 (30.6 - 36.2%) -- 47.7% chance to 3HKO

Aerial Ace-->Sucker Punch kills most of the tine after rocks if Bish catches it on the switch (min: 6.25+61.3+30.6=98.15, max: 6.25+72.4+36.2=114.85)

Breloom just gets 1-shotted

252+ Atk Life Orb Bisharp Aerial Ace vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Breloom: 437-515 (167.4 - 197.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO
I like luring stuff with bisharp :]

HP Ice on Hippowdon for a Landorus-T. OK OK, you might think of me now as someone that just puts HP Ice on random `mon just to kill Landorus-T but trust me, there's a reason why I suggest HP Ice on Hippowdon. Let me explain.

You have a team with Hippo + Drill (Adamant + Life Orb) core.

You are leading with your Hippowdon and the opponent is leading with his Landorus-T.

Nothing unusual. The opponent thinks you're just gonna exchange rocks, but no. You hit it with HP Ice and then set up rocks on its U-Turn. Now you might think "ok, that does around 30 so what's the point of it?"...

After the following calcs and a little explanation you will understand everything:

0- SpA Hippowdon Hidden Power Ice vs. 240 HP / 24 SpD Landorus-T: 136-160 (35.8 - 42.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

-1 252+ Atk Life Orb Excadrill Iron Head vs. 240 HP / 252+ Def Landorus-T: 99-118 (26.1 - 31.1%) -- guaranteed 4HKO

So I took the minimum roll each attack would do - 35.8 (from Hippowdon's HP Ice)] and 26.1 (from Excadrill's Iron Head)]

Now we do basic math... 35.8 + (26.1*2) + 12 = 100

100! yay!

Let me make it simple for you. I know how frustrating math is. After HP Ice from Hippowdon and Rocks, an Adamant + Life Orb Excadrill's Iron Head 2HKOs a defensive Landorus-T! Even with the absolute lowest rolls.

Hippowdon @ Leftovers
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 HP / 144 Def / 112 SpD
Impish Nature
- Earthquake
- Stealth Rock
- Slack Off
- Hidden Power [Ice]

Excadrill @ Life Orb
Ability: Sand Rush
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Iron Head
- Earthquake
- Rock Slide
- Rapid Spin

Doing 40% with a quadruple effective hit doesn't sound as an effective lure at all. If you want to lure in Landorus-T run Toxic. Even Ice Fang might work and even though it doesn't hit as hard as HP Ice against Lando, it hits other targets such as Garchomp, Serperior, and Dragonite harder (you still do laughable damage)

Landorus-T is so common and used a lot as a switch-in for Excadrill. With Hippowdon's HP Ice, Landorus-T is 2HKO'd by Excadrill's Iron Head upon switch-in. One Iron Head on switch-in and another one on the next turn and that's a dead Landorus-T for you.

Think you're better off with Toxic. It also catches opposing Hippowdon, Rotom-Wash, Slowbro, Tangrowth, and still weakens Landorus-T. Sure it's not quite the same as HP Ice for Lando which has more immediate results, but is gonna be way more useful in general.

hola False , well i think SD+Lum Bisharp should be add as lure to mega Sab;
Rock Slide Gliscor should be add as lure to Talonflame;
Psychic Manaphy shouls be add as lure to Tentacruel;
Thunder punch mega cham should be add as lure to regular Slowbro.

Here's a anti-lead Mew set I've been using, but it also is an effective lure for Dark types that are x4 Fighting-weak (which in OU, is most of them). I have posted the set elsewhere so sorry for cross posting, a mod can feel free to edit it if they feel it's necessary.

Mew @ Colbur Berry
Ability: Synchronize
EVs: 248 HP / 32 Def / 116 SpA / 112 Spe
Modest / Rash Nature
- Defog
- Stealth Rock
- Superpower / Aura Sphere
- Ice Beam

I'll talk about the non-lure stuff first; I have a lot of pokemon on my team that are stealth rock weak and so I wanted a pokemon that could reliably Defog and couldn't be pursuit trapped. Mew, with it's vast coverage options and good bulk seemed to be that pokemon - as Reflect Type Latias and the like don't really offer good options to check their common switch-ins like this Mew set does. Initially I was running Iron Head over Ice Beam to set rocks in the face of Mega Diancie, but Ice Beam is above and away the better coverage option and dealt with the vastly more common Tank Chomp who was causing me more trouble. Speaking of which, EVs are for out-speeding and OHKOing Tank Chomp as well as Defensive Lando. Iron Head, and more attack EVs, can be run as an extra option if you also have a problem with Diancie.

This set is best coupled with a primary stealth rocker (I use Azelf) who can set rocks in situations where Mew can't (e.g. using Skill Swap against Mega Sableye) as that can take the heat off him somewhat and allow you to lure more effectively later. On the whole people have an awareness of Mew's sweet coverage and so if you use him as a lead they can get a little jumpy on a match-up which is too good to be true.

While Modest seems like a bit of weird nature given Superpower, I didn't want to compromise of SpDef - but by all means Rash can be run instead, I just prefer the SpDef as a slight option against the likes of Thundurus. Further, even with the Modest nature, you get an OHKO on Weavile and Bisharp and the 2HKO on Banded and support TTar - as you outspeed that was fine by me and putting a heavy dent into Scarf Tar was good enough. However, Rash 136 HP or Def and 144 Atk will get the OHKO on Scarf/Band TTar without rocks - and puts in much more work against Chansey and Heatran (though the bulk by comparison sucks). Superpower > Aura Sphere for TTar with its SpDef boost in sand, however Aura Sphere is a decent option if you're not much worried about TTar.

Mew naturally has more to offer in the form of Synchronize, which is great utility again status inflicters. The main trouble with this set is Ice/Fighting coverage isn't that amazing, and you do have a little bit of setup baitiness about you - but so long as you're cool with these limitations it it isn't much of an issue. Like I said, this set is extremely capable at getting its Defog in.

Replays:

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/ou-378732444 - Low ladder, but I still don't think the opponent's team is ridiculous or they played badly. I misjudged Lando as Scarf on seeing Ferrothorn, however Mew comes in and faints Defensive Lando then lures Bisharp like a boss. This is obviously a fairly idealised match featuring the set in action, but you get the idea.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/ou-377593890 - Precisely the same situation as above, though this time after Lando and Bisharp I set rocks too. Also the ladder is slightly higher, but again not top tier.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/ou-376581379 - What Mew can do if you run Iron Head instead, the guy is literally so incautious around Mew they don't even bother to use Protect on mega evolution turn of Diancie. Oh dear oh dear.

EDIT: http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/ou-378856768 - My latest match against a Scarf TTar hoping to Pursuit Trap me. Pursuit is too weak to 2HKO with the Colbur Berry, even in spite of the Superpower Def drop from its first use. Currently going Win-Loss 22-4, to give you an idea of whether the team functions well - of which Mew is a fairly integral part.

EDIT 2: http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/ou-379697904 - A match where I lure and ladder to 1600+, just to show it working a little higher up.

Hi, can you add Tbolt Latios to the list of Azumarill lures? It does 80% min to the most popular variant (CB Azu), so I think that's a viable lure.

Reference calc:

252 SpA Life Orb Latios Thunderbolt vs. 172 HP / 0 SpD Azumarill: 309-364 (80.4 - 94.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
