Project ORAS RU Victim of the Week V2, with enthusiasm!! (Week 77: Swords Dance Cacturne)

Status
Not open for further replies.
Ok, time to update this thread, thanks to everyone who participated this week!

Counter: Mega Steelix (Molk) | Emboar (GreasyXSpoon) | Fletchinder (gorex)
Check: Qwilfish (Kableye) | Magmortar (ss234) | Houndoom (Cacturne of events)
Special Mention: Golbat (Ping_Pong_Along) | Magneton (Rollout Shuckle) | Jellicent (Sweep)
Cool, cool, excellent!

Ok, the next victim of the week will be the 10th one under my watch! mmm... ok. Lets try to make it special.

And the next mon to be victimized is:

The Artisan (Smeargle) @ Focus Sash
Ability: Own Tempo
EVs: 96 HP / 120 Def / 40 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Sticky Web
- Stealth Rock
- Magic Coat / Taunt
- Spore / Dark Void

Ok, here is how this is gonna work:

We all know how effective of a lead smeargle is and it recently dropped to RU on the last tier shift so this week we are going to take a different route towards this victim.

Contrary to just posting traditional checks and counters, now we are going post mons that could effectively avoid smeargle of doing its job. Mons that avoid this to set any hazard, mons that can avoid spore, mons that could cripple, beat it by removing its hazards in a 1v1 situation, etc.

Creativity is up to you and it will certainly be rewarding. Spread could be optimized is one wanna helps with that no problem. Hopefully it is fun for everyone

Now go!

reserving cinccino :D
Cinccino is a Counter

Cinccino @ Choice Band
Ability: Skill Link
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Tail Slap
- Bullet Seed
- Rock Blast
- Knock Off / U-turn

Stop laughing guys. Cinccino basically outspeeds Smeargle and can choose any of its multi-hit moves and OHKO it. Bullet Seed can be used if accuracy is an issue. ^.^

252 Atk Choice Band Cinccino Tail Slap (5 hits) vs. 96 HP / 120 Def Smeargle: 425-510 (154.5 - 185.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Choice Band Cinccino Bullet Seed (5 hits) vs. 96 HP / 120 Def Smeargle: 285-340 (103.6 - 123.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Choice Band Cinccino Rock Blast (5 hits) vs. 96 HP / 120 Def Smeargle: 285-340 (103.6 - 123.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

^set is customizable to user

Not much to say here, but thanks to Xatu's Magic Bounce, it bounces off hazards, status, and Taunt, making lead Smeargle pointless. Magic Coat should not trouble Xatu.

Qwilfish @ Focus Sash
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Spikes
- Taunt
- Waterfall
- Explosion

Well then, Qwilfish can out speed Smeargle and beat it to a taunt,..... What else is there to say after that? You can then set up your own Spikes and then Blow up or Waterfall w/e they send in next.

Reserving Alomomola
tco took the best one :(

mola_mola.jpg

Palindrome Emordnilap (Alomomola) @ Leftovers
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 120 HP / 136 Def / 252 SpD
Bold Nature
- Wish
- Protect
- Scald
- Magic Coat

You can just spam magic coat. If the opponent's smart, they'll start conservatively with rocks, but they might just go for sleep or web. The only thing the opponent can do is switch out or try to get in a "dueling magic coat" situation. Either way, you're good. This set's pretty nice too for opposing Alomomola with Toxic (or anything with Toxic really).

Medicham as a (erm... not sure what it is)
medicham.gif

Medicham @ Life Orb
Ability: Pure Power
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- High Jump Kick
- Zen Headbutt
- Fake Out
- Thunder Punch

Due to Fake Out, Medicham is able to reliably shut down Smeargle as it can break its Sash and proceed to KO it with its attacks. Not much to say about this but just lead with this predicting Smeargle lead and just proceed to Fake Out and kill it afterwards to prevent any hazards on the field.

252 Atk Life Orb Pure Power Medicham Fake Out vs. 96 HP / 120 Def Smeargle: 121-143 (44 - 52%) -- 11.7% chance to 2HKO

252 Atk Life Orb Pure Power Medicham High Jump Kick vs. 96 HP / 120 Def Smeargle: 1170-1375 (425.4 - 500%) -- guaranteed OHKO

122.png

Mr. Mime @ Twistedspoon / Life Orb
Ability: Filter
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Fake Out
- Dazzling Gleam
- Psychic
- Focus Blast

Actually, to be fair, anything with access to fake out and is faster than Smeargle can easily break Smeargle down. Here is a good example of a mon that you pretty much never ever see with Fake Out but acts as a pretty interesting Smeargle lure. Fake out is a rly good utility move that allows Mr.Mime to Mega-Evolve safely without having to worry about Bronzong going for the Gyro turn 1 Mr Mime to nab kills on occasion due to the rarity of said move.

So, we can all come to a consensus that these things universally stop Smeargle:
  • Fake Out and Multi-hit Moves
  • Magic Bounce (Xatu) / Magic Coat (various Pokemon)
  • Taunt (various Pokemon)
Although the former two seem rather failsafe (might as well mention Ambipom (xd)), the latter has the issue of Smeargle being capable of carrying Magic Coat on its own, making it slightly problematic. For the sake of posting, I might as well mention this:

Shiftry @ Life Orb
Ability: Chlorophyll
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Defog
- Knock Off
- Sucker Punch
- Leaf Storm

Shiftry, being Immune to Spore and faster than Smeargle, can easily OHKO it, while also having access to Defog, which allows it to clear the hazards Smeargle sets up.

virizion.gif

Virizion @ Lum Berry
Ability: Justified
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Leaf Blade
- Close Combat
- Zen Headbutt

Virizion is immune to Spore, and can use its Lum Berry to protect itself from Dark Void should it be running that move. I don't think I have to tell you what the attacks do. Worst case scenario, one hazard goes up and then Smeargle is dead.

480.png

my head is yellow (Uxie) @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpA / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
- Magic Coat
- U-turn
- Stealth Rock
- Psychic

since smeargle is likely to spore before setting up hazards, running magic coat over twave or w/e lets you not only stop smeargle setting up hazards, it goes to sleep, giving you a free turn to rocks or uturn into something that can kill it. if it does decide to set up a hazard rather than sporing you get that hazard for free (even better if you can bounce a web).

Excellent, thanks everyone who contributed this week, pretty neat level of creativity!

Well, I dont know how to call mons that can stop this mon from doing its job, lol. Lets go with guaranteed stop and good stop for it given the nature of smeargle I guess.

Guaranteed stop: Xatu (thecrystalonix) | Cincinno (Rollout Shuckle) | Medicham (-kal-)
Good stop: Alomomola (Ping_Pong_Along) | Qwilfish (GreasyXSpoon) | Shiftry (Esidisi)
Honorable mention: Virizion (Michaeloche) | Uxie (Cacturne of Events)
Wanted to put Mr. Mime myself but it isnt soundproof :V Thanks everyone again for the submissions, truly appreciate it.

Victim of the next week goes to:

Samurott @ Life Orb
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature / Rash Nature
- Taunt / Aqua Jet
- Grass Knot
- Ice Beam
- Hydro Pump

This mon is fantastic and one of the most beautiful designs to ever grace recent pokemon generations. Discuss!

Amoonguss as a Counter

Dream_Pok%C3%A9_Ball_Sprite.png

Amoonguss @ Black Sludge
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 160 Def / 96 SpD
Bold Nature
- Spore
- Giga Drain
- Sludge Bomb
- Stun Spore

Amoonguss can switch in on any of Samurott's moves, bar Ice beam, then Spore it or use Giga Drain. What's cool is that Amoonguss bulk can allow it to tank a Hydro Pump and an Ice Beam in the case rocks aren't up. That's just the Standard set I posted, but it can vary depending on how you like it.

252+ SpA Life Orb Samurott Hydro Pump vs. 252 HP / 96 SpD Amoonguss: 121-143 (28 - 33.1%) -- 84.1% chance to 4HKO after Black Sludge recovery

252+ SpA Life Orb Samurott Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 96 SpD Amoonguss: 265-312 (61.3 - 72.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Black Sludge recovery

0 SpA Amoonguss Giga Drain vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Samurott: 188-224 (56.7 - 67.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

every gen 5 pokemon was beautiful1!!! see the beautiful one below:

Virizion as a check:
virizion.gif

Virizion @ Lum Berry
Ability: Justified
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Leaf Blade
- Close Combat
- Stone Edge

Viri takes Ice Beam and kills with Leaf Blade 100% after rocks+Life orb, and has a good chance after the first life orb hit.

252+ SpA Life Orb Samurott Ice Beam vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Virizion: 198-234 (61.1 - 72.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Virizion Leaf Blade vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Samurott: 260-308 (78.5 - 93%) -- 37.5% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

Rotom-C as a check

Rotom-Mow @ Choice Specs
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 48 HP / 252 SpA / 208 Spe
Timid Nature
- Leaf Storm
- Volt Switch
- Thunderbolt
- Trick

Our favorite lawn-mower takes most of Samurott's moves nicely (other than Ice Beam of course) and easily RKO OHKO Samurott, even with a Volt Switch. Rotom-C is kind of iffy due to the possible Ice Beam, but makes for a decent offensive check. As for the spread, I found it while calcing and it allows Rotom-C to outrun max Speed base 80s while giving it some bulk. I thought it was interesting so I used it, hopefully nobody minds :P

252 SpA Choice Specs Rotom-C Volt Switch vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Samurott: 396-468 (119.6 - 141.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ SpA Life Orb Samurott Hydro Pump vs. 48 HP / 0 SpD Rotom-C: 105-125 (41.5 - 49.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252+ SpA Life Orb Samurott Ice Beam vs. 48 HP / 0 SpD Rotom-C: 234-276 (92.4 - 109%) -- 50% chance to OHKO
252+ SpA Life Orb Samurott Grass Knot (20 BP) vs. 48 HP / 0 SpD Rotom-C: 13-16 (5.1 - 6.3%) -- possibly the worst move ever
0 Atk Life Orb Samurott Aqua Jet vs. 48 HP / 0 Def Rotom-C: 27-31 (10.6 - 12.2%) -- possible 9HKO

Reserving Cradily

Cradily.png_zpsddda4syc.jpeg

Cradily @ Leftovers
Ability: Storm Drain
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Att / 252 SpD
Sassy Nature
- Recover
- Giga Drain
- Rock Slide
- Stealth Rock

Cradily is a hard check / soft counter for non-Megahorn Samurott. While switching into an Ice Beam can be rather dangerous if rocks are up, Cradily has a solid 2HKO and regains health on each attack. With proper prediction, it can even get a boost from Storm Drain and OHKO with rocks and LO damage.

0 SpA Cradily Giga Drain vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Samurott: 186-218 (56.1 - 65.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+1 0 SpA Cradily Giga Drain vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Samurott: 272-324 (82.1 - 97.8%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

252+ SpA Life Orb Samurott Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Cradily: 172-203 (45.7 - 53.9%) -- 93.4% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Life Orb Samurott Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Cradily: 172-203 (45.7 - 53.9%) -- 2.3% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Jolteon @ Leftovers
Ability: Volt Absorb
EVs: 80 HP / 252 SpA / 176 Spe
Timid Nature
- Substitute
- Baton Pass
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power [Ice]

Jolteon can tank one aqua jet, and easily kill off samurott with max investment tbolt (any set works), and out speeds with its naturally high bst.

252 SpA Jolteon Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Samurott: 354-416 (106.9 - 125.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO
0 Atk Life Orb Samurott Aqua Jet vs. 68 HP / 0 Def Jolteon: 86-101 (29.8 - 35%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Leftovers recovery

Magneton as soft counter

images

Magneton @ Eviolite
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 100 SpA / 236 SpD / 172 Spe
Timid Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Tri Attack
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Magnet Rise

Magneton is just a soft counter here, with Tbolt OHKO the rash nature Samurott easily but only just OHKO's the Modest with a +172 speed it can outspeed and can take a hit on switch in the make the kill next turn.

Magneton > Samurott

Modest Samurott> 100 SpA Magneton Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Samurott: 332-392 (100.3 - 118.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO
Rash Samurott> 100 SpA Magneton Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 0- SpD Samurott: 372-438 (112.3 - 132.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Samurott> Magneton

252+ SpA Life Orb Samurott Hydro Pump vs. 0 HP / 236 SpD Eviolite Magneton: 152-179 (63 - 74.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

everything else is either a 5-6HKO

pelipper.gif

Pelipper @ Leftovers
Ability: Keen Eye
EVs: 248 HP / 252 SpD / 8 Def
Calm Nature
- Scald
- Roost
- Defog
- Toxic / Air Slash / U-turn

Samurott is ugly and the mighty Specially Defensive Pelipper walls it.

252+ SpA Life Orb Samurott Ice Beam vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Pelipper: 110-131 (34 - 40.5%) -- 43.6% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery / guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Life Orb Torrent Samurott Hydro Pump vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Pelipper: 152-179 (47 - 55.4%) -- 19.9% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

0 SpA Pelipper Air Slash vs. 0 HP / 0- SpD Samurott: 106-126 (32 - 38%) -- 94.4% chance to 3HKO

Taunt is annoying

Lanturn as a hard check/soft counter :).

Spr_6x_171.png

Lanturn @ Leftovers
Ability: Volt Absorb
EVs: 104 HP / 192 Def / 212 SpD
Calm Nature
- Volt Switch
- Protect
- Scald
- Toxic / Heal Bell

Lanturn possesses excellent special bulk and a resistance to both Hydro Pump and Ice Beam, while being so light that it has absolutely no reason to worry about Grass Knot (Hydro Pump actually does more than Grass Knot does lol), meaning it has absolutely nothing to fear when switching into this particular Samurott set. In return, Lanturn can either smack Samurott with a Volt Switch, which either KOes Rott outright if it's below a certain amount of HP, or grants the Lanturn user a free switch in to a Pokemon that can easily outspeed and KO Samurott (or, if the opponent decides switch to anything that isn't immune to Volt Switch, a good check to the Pokemon that came in), or it can chip away at varients not running Taunt with Toxic.

252+ SpA Life Orb Samurott Hydro Pump vs. 104 HP / 212+ SpD Lanturn: 100-118 (23.9 - 28.2%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Life Orb Samurott Grass Knot (40 BP) vs. 104 HP / 212+ SpD Lanturn: 99-117 (23.7 - 28%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Life Orb Samurott Ice Beam vs. 104 HP / 212+ SpD Lanturn: 55-65 (13.1 - 15.5%) -- possibly the worst move ever
0 Atk Life Orb Samurott Aqua Jet vs. 104 HP / 192 Def Lanturn: 32-39 (7.6 - 9.3%) -- possibly the worst move ever

0 SpA Lanturn Volt Switch vs. 0 HP / 0- SpD Samurott: 180-212 (54.3 - 64%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
0 SpA Lanturn Scald vs. 0 HP / 0- SpD Samurott: 51-60 (15.4 - 18.1%) -- possible 6HKO

0 SpA Lanturn Volt Switch vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Samurott: 162-192 (48.9 - 58%) -- 94.9% chance to 2HKO
0 SpA Lanturn Scald vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Samurott: 46-54 (13.8 - 16.3%) -- possible 7HKO

0 SpA Lanturn Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 0- SpD Samurott: 230-272 (69.4 - 82.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
0 SpA Lanturn Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Samurott: 206-246 (62.2 - 74.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Nominating Registeel as a check.

195.gif

Registeel @ Leftovers
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
- Thunder Wave
- Seismic Toss
- Toxic
- Stealth Rock

Registeel is an adequate soft check that can take multiple Hydro Pumps and paralyze it back with Thunder Wave. From there, depending on if you stay in & how much hax you get, you can significantly wear it down or kill it with Seismic Toss. You can also simply set up SR and let a teammate easily pick off the paralyzed Samurott, or switch to your water resist as soon as it's paralyzed so Registeel has a chance to do something later in the game. Definitely pair this with Wish support as Registeel is worn down quite easily by Samurott. I was gonna propose AV Eelektross but that's clean 2HKOed after SR unless you want to run a lot of Special Defense.

252+ SpA Life Orb Samurott Hydro Pump vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Registeel: 121-144 (33.2 - 39.5%) -- 19.6% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

(Seismic Toss will 3HKO back after LO recoil)

Jynx as a counter
angry_jynx.gif

Jynx @ Life Orb
Ability: Dry Skin
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Lovely Kiss
- Ice Beam
- Psyshock
- Focus Blast

Jynx can take any move since it's immune to Hydro Pump and 2HKO back with Psyshock or you can Lovely Kiss Samu and then proceed to kill it. It's also immune to Aqua Jet so it can't get picked off and it doesn't care about Taunt aside from Lovely Kiss, but you outspeed so it doesn't matter. Only thing is you have to make sure it isn't physical before switching in, but the victim set is special so it's all good.

252+ SpA Life Orb Samurott Grass Knot (60 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Jynx: 87-103 (32.1 - 38%) -- 92.8% chance to 3HKO
252 SpA Life Orb Jynx Psyshock vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Samurott: 177-211 (53.4 - 63.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Life Orb Jynx Focus Blast vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Samurott: 209-247 (63.1 - 74.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Escavalier as a Check

589.gif

Escavalier @ Assault Vest
Ability: Overcoat
EVs: 52 HP / 252 Atk / 204 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Knock Off
- Megahorn
- Iron Head
- Drill Run

The Spread might seem a bit odd, but it works surprisingly well and has did well for me in the past. This thing is 3HKO'd bye hydro pump (If rocks aren't up) which means it can switch into it and most likely kill with megahorn after LO damage (Unless it misses). AV lowers the damage taken from hydro pump and other special moves to make it easier for esca to take hits.

CALCS:

252+ SpA Life Orb Samurott Hydro Pump vs. 52 HP / 204 SpD Assault Vest Escavalier: 121-142 (41.1 - 48.2%) -- 64.1% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock
252+ Atk Escavalier Megahorn vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Samurott: 253-298 (76.4 - 90%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Escavalier Megahorn vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Samurott: 253-298 (76.4 - 90%) -- 18.8% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
252+ SpA Life Orb Samurott Hydro Pump vs. 52 HP / 204 SpD Assault Vest Escavalier: 121-142 (41.1 - 48.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Ludicolo as a counter

Ludicolo @ Leftovers
Ability: Rain Dish
EVs: 248 HP / 204 SpD / 56 Spe
Calm Nature
- Scald
- Giga Drain
- Synthesis
- Leech Seed

Although this set doesn't have an actual analysis this generation, it fully counters special Samurott. Takes Ice Beam and Grass Knot like a boss while quad-resisting Samurott's STAB moves, and can easily heal off the damage while 2HKOing with Giga Drain. Time for calcs:

0 SpA Ludicolo Giga Drain vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Samurott: 200-236 (60.4 - 71.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252+ SpA Life Orb Samurott Ice Beam vs. 248 HP / 0+ SpD Ludicolo: 112-133 (30.8 - 36.6%) -- 61.4% chance to 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Life Orb Samurott Grass Knot (80 BP) vs. 248 HP / 0+ SpD Ludicolo: 100-118 (27.5 - 32.5%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

ferroseed.gif

Ferroseed @ Eviolite
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 248 HP / 148 Def / 112 SpD
Impish Nature
- Spikes / Stealth Rock
- Leech Seed
- Seed Bomb / Knock Off
- Protect / Thunder Wave

ferroseed is a 'mon i feel gets slept on more than it should. it's not phenomenal by any stretch (v.evio-reliant, a grass that doesn't switch into rotom-c / scald super well, v.low presence), but it still has super useful typing, spikes, and enough options to stick around and, at the very least, be really annoying. given spread avoids the 3hko from full, is heavily favoured to survive after sr (69.9% rate of survival), and deals ~35-40% w/seed bomb, giving it a heavily favourable win rate in the mu (given 'rott is nearly forced to taunt somewhere in this exchange).

Ok, time to update this thread. Thanks a lot to everyone who participated, it means a lot. Solid nomination 15 minutes before the deadline!

Counter: Lanturn (Molk) | Jynx (SlickHippo99) | Cradily (Ping_Pong_Along)
Check: Virizion (Kableye) | Rotom-C (Rollout Shuckle) | Jolteon (thecrystalonix)
