ORAS UU TEAMBUILDING COMPENDIUM

The idea of this thread is to provide a representation of what Pokemon do in the metagame. The Compendiums we have provided are the Checks Compendium and the Role Compendium. Below, you'll find paragraphs explaining what each compendium can help with. We hope that this is a very useful source of information for new and veteran players alike when it comes to teambuilding, one of the hardest aspects of competitive Pokemon.

ORAS UU Checks Compendium

The basic goal of this part of the ORAS UU Teambuilding Compendium is to provide a visual tool to assist teambuilding by giving players a quick way to pick checks and counters for the metagame's top threats. Basically, a "check" as defined here is anything that reliably beats a threat, and they're separated in this list by whether or not they can counter, hard check, or revenge kill/soft check a top threat. The Pokemon will be listed by sprites rather than name for the sake of easy and quick reference. As I want this to be a community-built resource, I encourage everyone to suggest changes as you see fit. Here are a few guidelines that explain how this compendium will be organized (subject to change):
Counter: Pokemon listed can switch into basically anything standard the threat listed throws at them with Stealth Rocks up and still win the matchup. They may only be able to switch in safely one or two times, or they may only be able to switch in with certain sets, so that'll be up to the player's discretion. When evaluating which moves a check must be able to switch into, I'll only consider moves that (A) are included as main set slashes on a Pokemon's analysis page, or (B) are at least common enough to show up on a Pokemon's 1720 moveset statistics entry. Anything else will be considered niche or uncommon enough that a check won't have to worry about it too often.

Hard Check: These Pokemon can switch in safely under certain circumstances, but not always (ex: Cobalion or Whimsicott switching into Hydreigon, risking Fire Blast). Pokemon in this category can either switch safely into some variants of a threat but struggle against others, or they struggle with common coverage moves but can at least switch into a threat's STABs and other moves commonly used on switches (such as boosting moves and Knock Off) and win the matchup. This is somewhat of a "gray area" category, so there's a bit of flexibility here.

Soft Check/Revenge Killer: These Pokemon cannot switch safely into a certain threat, generally because they are beaten by one of the threat's STABs, lose if they switch in on a boosting move, etc. Pokemon in this category can, however, defeat a threat in a 1-on-1 matchup. This includes faster revenge killers, as well as Pokemon that can take a single hit and KO back. Choice Scarf users fall into this category, but they aren't specifically mentioned in this thread to avoid unnecessary clutter.

The Pokemon below are sorted into their Viability Rankings that allows users to see checks and counters to more of the higher tier Pokemon rather than lower priority Pokemon. When naming Checks and Counters, we decided to keep them B-rank in the VRs and above to avoid any near-unviable/unnecessary Pokemon from being added. This Compendium will also be updated alongside the Viability Rankings so be sure to check back after every update!

ORAS UU Role Compendium

Below, we have the various roles an ORAS UU team might want a Pokémon to fill. For each of these roles is a list of Pokémon which can fulfill that role; all of the Pokémon listed can work at least somewhat viably as a performer of the role. If there is a Pokémon which is not listed which can perform well in a certain role, please feel free to post about it, and we may add it. However, this thread is not meant to be a place for discussion about the viability of Pokémon in general, unless a Pokémon's placement is drastically off - we have Viability Rankings for that.

note: This Role Compendium only contains Pokemon in B-Rank and above, please don't suggest Pokemon below this ranking. There will be times where we make exceptions, but it won't be often.

Hey I didn't want to make more work for you, but I do have a few suggestions. I did read the definitions of Counters, Hard Checks, and Soft Checks before I decided to do this.

Hydreigon
: Umbreon is on Hard Check so I feel Mandibuzz should be there too. This is kind of a grey area for me since taunt Hydra beats both umbreon and mandibuzz 1 on 1.

Suicune
: Should Seismitoad be somewhere on here. Heliolisk is a counter because it still beats Crocune after a clam mind and if they use rest and sleep talk to boost up again that means they dont have ice beam. Seismitoad is different so I wouldn't call it a counter. Maybe a soft check. Slowking should probably move down to hard check since roar cune sets up burns and phazes. When it comes back it, it deals with 40% scalds plus burn and wont have the opportunity to set up again.

Entei
-1 252+ Atk Choice Band Entei Stone Edge vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Arcanine: 182-216 (47.5 - 56.3%) -- 31.3% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery, Hard Check

Swampert-Mega
If adamant, Cresselia does not win 1 on 1 let alone counter. Rain makes recovery for cress 30 I think and waterfalls are doing (34.6 - 41%). That and flinch chance. In fact, I often switch into cresselia with my mega swampert because it can't be paralyzed and it takes next to nothing from Cresselia's attacks. Hard Check at most.

Cobalion
+1 252 SpA Cobalion Hidden Power Ghost vs. 240 HP / 16 SpD Eviolite Doublade: 174-206 (54.5 - 64.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO. Its not common at all, but it is an analysis set. I've used it a few times because doublade no longer becomes a counter to cobalion. Its up to you, but if we are going off of analysis sets, then doublade isn't a counter. Sacred Sword + Sneak does 64-75% in total damage.

Gyarados
Empoleon shouldn't be a counter cause eq. Plus its not KOing back.

I'll do more if you want me to. Hope I helped.

I'm curious as to what exactly the parameters were for this project. For example, Crunch is perfectly viable on Mega Aerodactyl and prevents Slowking from countering it. Further down the spectrum is something like Venomoth running HP Fire to beat Cobalion, which I doubt anyone has ever run but is a possibility that technically exists. But, of course, if all these possibilities were planned for, the list would be ridiculously short. Are these checks and counters all based solely on the primary suggested sets in the analyses? I think that's a solid place to draw the line, but whether I'm on or off, it could be a good thing to mention for anyone wanting to use something like the first example I gave (which isn't slashed on Aerodactyl's analysis) as a critique.

This is overall a pretty solid list. However, it seems like you forgot to add Milotic on a lot of the check lists, which is a pretty noteworthy defensive pokemon in the current meta that shouldn't be overlooked. I'd probably put it at:
Aerodactyl-M: Counter (same physdef as Slowking)

Salamence: Hard Check (tanks any boosted hit and OHKO's with Ice Beam)

Hydreigon: Hard Check (avoids 2HKO and 2HKO's with Ice Beam, beats Taunt variants)

Suicune: Hard Check (doesn't beat 1v1 bFlorut can Haze)

Entei: Counter (same physdef as Slowking with Marvel Scale)

Swampert-M: Hard Check (same physdef as Slowking)

Cobalion: Hard Check (can Haze to beat SD sets but still takes a good chunk from boosted CC)

Gyarados: Hard Check (doesn't beat 1v1 but can Haze)

Mamoswine: Hard Check (same physdef as Slowking)

Krookodile: Soft Check

Feraligatr: Counter (Haze lets it beat 1v1)

Blastoise-M: Hard Check (avoids 2HKO)

Houndoom-M: Hard Check

Crobat: Hard Check

Cresselia: Hard Check

Nidoking: Hard Check

Chandelure: Hard Check

Aggron-M: Counter

Doublade: Counter

There are also a few other things I noticed that I think should be adjusted:
Aerodactyl-M: Umbreon and Reuniclus moved to Counter (both have better physical bulk than Slowking, which is listed as a counter)

Suicune: Slowking moved to Hard Check (cannot beat Roar variants)

Blastoise-M: Toxicroak moved to Hard Check (2HKO'd by Ice Beam, cannot 2HKO back)
Shaymin moved to Counter (superior bulk to Roserade, which is listed as a Counter)

Mienshao: Gyarados moved to Hard Check (2HKO'd by Stone Edge, cannot OHKO in one turn)

Some quick changes I'd suggest for checks/counters to start:

  • Take Chandelure and Froslass out of Snorlax's counters. They went in there when mono-attacking Curselax was by far the most popular set, but now it is more rare than Curse + EQ or band, making Snorlax actually a pretty good counter to 'mons like Chandy rather than the alternative.
  • Move Sableye into Snorlax counters.
  • If Steelix-M is a counter to Beedrill, so is Forry.

Really cool idea for a thread. I'd like to make some suggestions though:

I think it would be useful to make some kind of distinction for mons that commonly run divergent sets.

For instance, Doublade is listed as a hard check to Salamence. While doublade may be able to hard check some or even the majority of Salamence sets - it still gets OHKO'd by fire blast. Since fire blast is a very common move on Mence (37.5%), I think most people would agree Doublade wouldn't be considered a hard check to this set.

It would take some reformatting, but it may be a good idea to list checks for mons like Salamence under which specific moveset they check.

Add Tangrowth to Gyarados Hard Checks because it is with the right set

Add Bronzong to Soft Checks for Mamoswine because it beats knock off sets very easily

Add Gyarados to Soft Checks for Krookodile

Remove Alomomola from Mega Sharpedo counters, move it to Hard Checks same with Suicune

Remove Shaymin from Sableye Counters because it's certainly not a counter to it

Add Heliolisk to Soft Checks on Mega Blastoise

Remove Tentacruel from Hard Checks for Toxicroak

Machamp to Soft Checks on Snorlax

Mandibuzz to Hard Checks for Azelf

Add Chesnaught and Tangrowth to Counters on regular Swampert because they are

Move Alomomola and Suicune from Counters to Hard Checks on Escavalier

Mega Absol to Hard Checks/Soft Checks on Cresselia

Remove Mega Blastoise for Mega Absol counters; move it to Hard Checks

Remove Gyarados from Mega Abomasnow counters

Escavalier to Dragalge Counters/Hard Checks

Krookodile to Espeon Soft Checks

Mega Aggron to Metagross Hard Checks

Forretress to Slurpuff Counters

If really needed I can go in dept with those adjustments but I think it's pretty clear lol

Something small but:
252 SpA Life Orb Alakazam Focus Blast vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Assault Vest Meloetta: 95-112 (23.5 - 27.7%) -- 78% chance to 4HKO
Melo can take anything from zam easily and 2hko with either of its STABs

I do agree indeed that Doublade totally ain't a hard check for Salamence, but I dont think it's needed to make this sort of category you're speaking of. Because that's why they're named Hard Checks and not Counters. When some set might be able to beat this certain Pokemon, but this mon walls all the other sets (not taking Mence as an example), it certainly is an Hard Check because it distinguishes it from the other Counters by being beaten by this 1 certain set so I think it's fine as it is o.o

Alright so I updated the Role Compendium with a single screenshot of the actual compendium w/o every single Pokemon sprite, so it should be able to load faster on computers as well as mobile if you're trying to access the compendium from there. That screenshot will get updated after every shift/a new mon drops so be on the lookout!

e: People were having problem on Mobile w/ the image so I've reverted it back to text version

Gyarados
Empoleon shouldn't be a counter cause eq. Plus its not KOing back.
Implemented these 3, thanks! As for Seismitoad/Arcanine for Suicune/Entei respectively, we've tried to keep B- and below ranked Pokemon out of it, unless it's absolutely necessary (see: Tangrowth for Feraligatr and Meloetta for Alakazam). I'd like some more input on Doublade not countering Cobalion though, I've never seen that HP Ghost set used in my life lmao

I believe I updated all of these! Also making an exception on Meloetta (It's C+) since it has been getting some love lately as an offensive Zam check.

Yeah the cobalion kills doublade thing came from this analysis set. It should be hp dark since it doesnt screw with the evs and hits everything except fairys which you have flash cannon for, but I wasn't going to complain about it. So if cobalion calm minds as doublade switches in, cobalion wins. I brought it up because its an analysis set but if its too specific its fine.
upload_2016-4-20_16-33-8.png

Im going to go through a few more since I'm posting anyway.

Sceptile-M
Standard Assault vest machamp beats timid sceptile every time and has a 90% chance to beat modest. Considering that I think hard check would be a nice fit for it.

Beedrill-M
You have forretress as a counter which is b-. If you want to include forretress on these, then there are a lot of other places you can put it on the other mons. I don't think its "absolutely necessary" but it might be nice to add. Im also seeing some others like arcanine on whimis.

Zapdos
Dragalge is Hard Check. Specs sets beats every Zap set and has an 88% chance to beat life orb hp ice.

Whimsicott
Most zapdos varients beats whimi one on one with toxic, heatwave, hp ice, and recovery. 252 SpA Pixie Plate Whimsicott Moonblast vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Zapdos: 144-171 (44.8 - 53.2%) -- 31.3% chance to 2HKO Thats offensive whimi vs offensive zapdos. Heat wave kills everytime no matter the investment. Zapdos to hard check seems fair. (Usually this is a really small thing but I have spdef zapdos switch into whimi all the time.) Hard Check

Nidoqueen
Azelf to somewhere thats not counter. It beats defensive nido 100% but (91 - 107.2%) from offensive sludge.

Snorlax
All the counters listed are 2hko by banded eq which is an analysis set. Jellicent, however, is not listed and beats both banded and curse sets on the switch.

Heracross
Banded EQ is a set so Nidoqeen isn't a counter. SD guts with orb also kills with facade unless defensive and if nido is, then it cant ko back. Nidoqueen to hard check.

I tried not to be too nit picky (like p2 on blastoise hard checks or infernape as a crawdaunt counter... hehe its just a joke). I based all these off of analysis sets and calcs I ran. I'll finish up the rest once you update this and after I get a clear picture on what B- pokemon and below actually stay in the things, if you want.

Some changes I have:

  • Diancie to Heal Bell in Roles
  • Remove Umbreon as a Jellicent counter. It needs to creep it hard and run Taunt to beat it which is not really what I call a coutner
  • Chandy doesn't counter Puff, it dies to +6 Play Rough after Rocks
  • Gligar counters M-Amphy with the SpD set
  • Umbreon can be added to a bunch of stuff as counters, like Gyarados, Feraligatr, hard checks to M-Pert, Salamence, Mamoswine

Couple things, completely updated Checks Compendium to reflect recent changes in Viability Rankings, which means Diancie has been added. It usually doesn't run Earth Power (see: analyses) so I didn't factor that into choosing Checks/Counters, so lmk if I missed anything.

sub/dd gyra is at the very least a soft check to empoleon assuming that he doesn't get the burn when going for sub because a non offensive empoleons coverage moves can't break a sub on first hit AKA scald/ice beam, making empoleon setup bait for gyra.

  • Metagross to Whimsicott counter
  • Suicune as Physical/Mixed wall. The most common spreads are 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD and bold

I'm sure that most non-offensive empoleons would run roar in their move set anyway

Alakazam's not listed at all yet in the Role Compendium...

Some Role Compendium additions:
  • Alakazam as a Wallbreaker
  • Froslass as Dedicated Lead and Spikes
  • Diancie as a Stealth Rock user
  • Metagross as a Stealth Rock user

Take Bronzong out of Counters to Toxicroak. Max Defense(which isn't even a set) can not switch into an SD and win. I would probably take it out of the list all together. Impish barely beats it 1v1, and zong runs spdef anyway so there is no point.

They are Hydreigon counters the vast majority of the time. Hydra can rarely afford to run Superpower or Iron Tail (someone will have to calc for me, but I think Specs Flash Cannon STILL only 3HKOs PDef Florges), so they're very safe switlch-ins the vast majority of the time.

Even Taunt-Roost doesn't like Blissey. It's a massive war of attrition with a fair amount of room to fuck up.

Threw

cohiba
Ok so I incorrectly assumed Superpower was slashed on the analysis, so Blissey is safe to stay in counters. However, Florges does need to be relegated to Hard Check status, because Iron Tail is slashed and it's cleanly 2HKOed after SR damage.

Ok, here's some stuff I noticed. Focused on B+ since it didn't seem to be getting much attention. If anything needs explaining, I'm glad to. I had explanations for all these at first, but I got 90% of the way through before accidentally hitting X and losing it all, so sorry if it's a bit blunt. E: After reading the post below, some of the stuff (like offensive P2 e_e) probably won't be relevant enough to change anything, but hopefully most of it is still helpful.

Krook doesn't counter Cress. Pretty sure CM set beats Reuni too if it doesn't have shadow ball, although I could be wrong.

Zam can be moved up as a Tenta counter.

Venomoth hard checks Alomomola.

Florges and P2 only hard check Kyurem rather than countering it.

Hydrei counters Mega Doom.

MAggron, Snorlax, and Cress don't counter Gardevoir.

Zapdos doesn't counter Lucario.

Florges doesn't counter (don't even think it checks tbh) Tornadus.

Zapdos and Aromatisse don't counter Mienshao.

Crobat, MAggron, Forry, Escav, Chesnaught, Bronzong all don't counter Roserade.

Snorlax counters Chandy.

Somehow, Fire Blast is used on MAbsol enough to show up on the usage stats, but Iron Tail isn't. So only take Chesnaught, MAggron and M-Lix off counters. However, it's small enough a percentage you can probably just keep them.

Blissey doesn't counter Nidoking.

I guess the offensive P2 set wasn't taken into account, because the only things on its list of counters that actually do so after a Download boost (which must be taken into account) are Florges, Lax, Blissey, and Machamp (AV).

Last edited:
I don't think it necessarily needs to strictly go from the analysis every time, it can be a bit more subjective. For example only 7% of hydreigon used iron tail in the usage stats from last month, actually I've never seen anybody run iron tail besides myself. I think it's safe to say Florges is a counter in this case.
