Rotom-Wash @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 104 Def / 24 SpA / 76 SpD / 52 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Hydro Pump
- Volt Switch
- Defog / Will-o-Wisp
- Pain Split
Straight from BW, Rotom-W is a comically annoying Pokémon to face for Sand teams due to its good matchup against the two sand setters and their common partners. Of course, this set isn't meant to break - use Nasty Plot and a more offensive spread if you want - but rather take advantage of this core to generate momentum and doing what its support move does: spreading status or clearing the field from hazards.

With 24 SpA, Hydro Pump always 2HKOs 252/252+ Hippo with Leftovers and 2HKOs 252/4 Skarmory, which of course hates Volt Switch even more. Furthermore, Rotom-W has no issues switching into non-Toxic Hippowdon and Skarmory's Body Press has 0.5% chance of 3HKO in sand. You don't want to repeatedly take damage, but Skarmory doesn't typically want to click Body Press either and any other move that isn't Toxic is fine. Plus, Rotom-W is unaffected by Spikes and, with Defog, is a Defogger that singlehandedly beats this hazard stacking core.

The rest of the spread maximises Leftovers recovery, tanks two CB Surging Strikes after rocks and outspeeds 92 Landorus-T+things around that speed tier (the new common Buzzwole set, Timid Magnezone, Adamant Bisharp), with the remaining EVs in SpD for added special bulk against stuff like Tornadus-T.

reuniclus

Reuniclus @ Life Orb
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 HP / 212 Def / 44 Spe
Bold Nature
- Calm Mind
- Psyshock
- Recover
- Thunder

similar to clefable it uses both hippo and skarmory as setup fodder. with its immunity to status, decent bulk + bold nature and immunity to residual damage, it can be a generally potent wincon and can break the core w/ ease

Xatu is a counter to this core by acting as an active deterant to hazards, threatening to magic bounce them right back to the opposing team.
Neither Hippowdon nor Skarmory have the means to threaten xatu, toxic acts to cripple hippowdon and most switchins, while heat wave covers skarmory and other steel types. Unfortunately, Xatu requires a lot of building around, due to not being the most conventional pokemon in OU, however it can function on certain stall builds and sometimes sun.

Timid Nature
- Hurricane/Heat Wave
- Taunt
- Defog
- U-turn

Taunt Tornadus-T counters this core in every way possible. It has Defog to remove hazards set by these Pokemon. It uses Taunt to shut down hazard setting, Toxic and Iron defense attempts from Hippo and Skarmory respectively. Most importantly, Taunt denies them the opportunity to use recovery moves, which helps it beat them with Hurricane (4KHO on both) or Heat Wave (2KHO on Skarm and 6KHO on Hippo). Moreover, Taunt means that Hippo cannot touch Torn-T (EQ is its only attacking move) and all Skarmory can do is try to chip it down a bit with Body Press (possible 6KHO), which is rendered useless thanks to Torn-T's Regenerator. Finally, Taunt against either of these Pokemon means that the core has no choice but to switch out, which Torn-T capitalizes on using U-turn against its switch-in.

tldr : Taunt Tornadus-T counters Hippo-Skarm without a scratch.

EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

Specs Lele breaks this core pretty well. It 2 shots both mons with psychic. Simple enough, but here’s the calcs.

252 SpA Choice Specs Tapu Lele Psychic vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Hippowdon in Psychic Terrain: 255-300 (60.7 - 71.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO :Hippowdon:
252 SpA Choice Specs Tapu Lele Psychic vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Skarmory in Psychic Terrain: 191-225 (57.1 - 67.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO :Skarmory:

I was nice and gave Skarmory more hp. The point is, neither mon can switch into choice specs Tapu Lele so it can be considered a breaker for this core. Funny enough, Lele even gets a free switch on Skarmory since its body press is resisted.

Howdy all! thank you all for the submissions this week! This defensive core is extremely solid with the minor uptick in Hippowdon usage, both providing a form of hazards in Stealth Rock + Spikes and being able to cover each other's weaknesses well, with Skarmory's typing even being able to prevent Hippowdon from getting Toxic'd. With that minor review done, let's take a look at the submissions!

Round Two: The Scoop!

:ss/skarmory: :ss/hippowdon:

:master ball: Threats of the Round: :master ball:

:clefable: :reuniclus:: Clefable and Reuniclus' Magic Guard ability and access to reliable recovery in Softboiled and Recover pretty much ruins any fun that the hippo and bird want to have, with Skarmory basically becoming set-up fodder and Hippowdon also still being relatively easy to set up on due to it's lack of oomph.
:Xatu:: While this was a very interesting submission, it actually has lot more merit than what meets the eye. The combination of Magic Bounce and it's solid typing lets it handle the core very well, preventing any kind of hazards or status and bouncing it back, being immune to Earthquake and quad-resisting Body Press, it shuts down any shenanigans from both of them.
:tornadus-therian:: Taunt Torn-T (thassa lot of t's) coupled with Regenerator lets it make up for all the chip it takes from Sandstorm while ruining any kind of status moves being used and with it only being hit by Body Press it can handle the core quite well

:premier ball: Additional Notes :premier ball:
:magnezone:: Magnet Rise Magnezone is a very cool Pokemon, but it's weak to both Skarmory's Body Press and Hippowdon's Earthquake and even though it's meant to trap Skarmory, it is outsped by it and if it gets an Iron Defense off it's in danger, still a solid submission!
:tapu fini:: Tapu Fini performs a similar role to Reuniclus and Clefable, being immune to toxic thanks to it's terrain and being able to use Taunt to prevent hazards from going up instead of using Magic Guard though that seems to be the problem. Even with Draining Kiss, it is susceptible to chip a little bit and can eventually be worn down, but it handles the core well.
:victini:: Victini doesn't particularly like switching into Hippowdon and risking an Earthquake, but neither of the two want to switch into it as they both get 2HKO'd by V-Create. Though it doesn't like getting Toxic'd or EQ'd, a good submission nonetheless.

With that out of the way, onto Round 3!

:ss/dragonite: + :ss/Magnezone:

Round 3: DragMag!

A classic strategy dating back to the dark ages, DragMag team's main goal is to trap Steel-types with Magnezone so that it's Dragon-type buddies, in this case Dragonite, can clean sweep opposing teams. With Dragonite's access to Multiscale and reliable recovery in Roost, it is able to stay healthy all the way through the match, keep on boosting, and eventually get it's sweep. Though this devastating duo presents themselves as tricky to deal with, I believe that you can find a submission to break this core! 5 days to submit once again, and i will be updating the archive shortly!

Mamoswine @ Life Orb
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Icicle Crash
- Ice Shard
- Earthquake
- Knock Off

Breaks this core with relative ease. Can block the Electric-type STABs of Magnezone and can threaten Dragonite with its hard hitting Ice-type STAbs. Furthermore, it can Knock Off the Heavy-Duty Boots from Dragonite and it can also revengekill weakened Dragonite even when it is at couple of boosts already due to its priority in Ice Shard. Mamoswine can reliably threaten this core due to its great typing and solid bulk and is able to pick boosted Dragonite off and with Earthquake its able to get rid off Magnezone as well. In overall mamoswine is really dangerous to these two members of the DragMag Core!

While Kyurem can't switch into Magnezone locked into Flash Cannon, it can hard switch into Dragonite and threaten to end it's sweep with Ice Beam because +1 Dual Wingbeat doesn't OKHO. Ice Beam also surprisingly threatens Magnezone.

+1 252 Atk Dragonite Dual Wingbeat (2 hits) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Kyurem: 218-260 (55.7 - 66.4%) -- approx. 2HKO

Rotom-Heat @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 248 HP / 8 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Nasty Plot
- Overheat
- Discharge
- Pain Split

Are you ready for a heat submission? Although lots of stuff does well offensively against this core, checking it defensively is extremely difficult. However, Rotom-H has the typing and Levitate to take all their attacks extremely well, and it outspeeds both:
252+ SpA Choice Specs Magnezone Flash Cannon vs 248 HP / 0 SpD Rotom-H: 114-135 (37.6 - 44.3%) - guaranteed 3HKO
8 SpA Rotom-H Overheat vs 0 HP / 0 SpD Magnezone: 320-380 (113.8 - 135.2%) - guaranteed OHKO
It doesn't like Toxic from Magnezone, but does anything? Pain Split at least means it doesn't get completely crippled straight away. If you are really weak to this core, you could always run something like an Aromatherapy Clefable or Blissey to deal with that.

+1 252 Atk Dragonite Dual Wingbeat (2 hits) vs 248 HP / 0 SpD Rotom-H: 94-112 (31 - 36.9%) - approx 77.2% chance to 3HKO
+2 8 SpA Rotom-H Discharge vs 0 HP / 4 SpD Multiscale Dragonite: 90-106 (27.8 - 32.8%) - guaranteed 4HKO
+2 8 SpA Rotom-H Discharge vs 0 HP / 4 SpD Dragonite: 180-213 (55.7 - 65.9%) - guaranteed 2HKO
It might try to Roost stall you, since it is faster at +1, but if it does that it will eventually get paralysed.

(A pivot set, like Rotom-H ran prior to DLC2, is probably even better at checking this core, but I'm pretty sure then you are making it a completely worse Rotom-W.)

Weavile can triple axel dragonite and ignore multiscale pretty much due to the multi hit nature of it. Low kick can almost easily ohko magnezone and ohko 100% of the time with stealth rocks. Weavile is a great offensive check to the core and applies a lot of pressure to even magnezone with a band triple axel.

252 Atk Choice Band Weavile Triple Axel (40 BP) (3 hits) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Multiscale Dragonite: 582-690 (180.1 - 213.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

the good boy himself, cannot get set up on by dd dragonite, and can toxic it in response, and it still has more toxic pp than dnite has heal bell pp, so it's not threatened by any variant of nite, and most of its coverage moves don't do much to quaggy. It's also immune to one of zone's STABs and resists the other so that even analytic flash cannon can't 2HKO it even with rocks up, while quaggy has a chance to OHKO back with EQ since it also conveniently ignores iron defense boosts

Garchomp @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 232 HP / 220 Def / 56 Spe
Impish Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Toxic
- Dragon Tail / Breaking Swipe

Before I start, I don't have a specific spread for TankChomp so I just made this generic one with speed for Modest Heatran and rest in defense and HP to minimize Stealth Rock damage.
Now, TankChomp is a real menace for this core. For obvious reasons, it has an advantageous matchup against Magnezone - being able to come in on Electric STAB and threaten an easy OHKO with Earthquake. With no SpDef investment and no Rest, it's vulnerable to Flash Cannon and Toxic, so handle it with care. Toxic + Dragon STAB + massive chip damage allow Garchomp to handle every non-Ice Punch DD Dragonite, tremendously punishing Dual Wingbeats and taking Earthquakes well, while threatening crippling status or solid damage+phazing/lowering attack (in case you didn't know, Breaking Swipe is a physical 60 BP Dragon STAB that always lowers Attack by one stage. Flamethrower is still a good move for Kartana and to have some pressure on metal birds; Rest/Endure are also pretty good situational moves to consider; I only put Dragon STAB to further emphasize Garchomp's ability to take on this iteration of DragMag.
Even without Dragon STAB, if Dragonite runs Earthquake and thus can avoid passive chip damage from RH+RS, it loses to Toxic. If it's Heal Bell, it doesn't lose to Toxic but takes massive damage by touching Garchomp via Dual Wingbeat and it can still be pressured by Toxic while trying to heal from touching Garchomp. These situations are futher exaggerated if Garchomp does choose Rest.

Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 108 Def / 148 SpD
Sassy Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Gyro Ball
- Stealth Rock
- Leech Seed
- Body Press/Knock off

:Ferrothorn: can stop this core pretty well, because even though it gets trapped by :Magnezone:, :Choice Specs: mag can't kill it. As for :Dragonite:, on the surface it doesn't resist Dwb or eq, but in fact it can take them pretty well. The spread allows it to not ever be 2HKOed by +1 Dwb after rocks, which is a benchmark worth hitting imo. With Dwb dnite breaks the multiscale, and then ferro can just gyro for some nice damage. As for roost, you just click leech, so not only will you heal every turn but dnite will never have its multiscale. One thing to note is that this wouldn't have worked vs bulky dnite, but this isn't bulky, so it's fine.

+1 252 Atk Dragonite Dual Wingbeat (2 hits) vs. 252 HP / 108 Def Ferrothorn: 146-174 (41.4 - 49.4%) -- approx. 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

Then it breaks multiscale , takes 12+12=24, is at approx 76%

0 Atk Ferrothorn Gyro Ball (150 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Dragonite: 160-189 (49.5 - 58.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

So you likely win the 1v1 :blobwizard:

252+ SpA Choice Specs Magnezone Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 148+ SpD Ferrothorn: 85-101 (24.1 - 28.6%) -- 0.4% chance to 4HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

You just leech seed. You'll be fine even without Body Press.

That's it, have a good day

:rotom-heat:: While Rotom-Heat itself isn't the best pick in the current metagame it does handle this core well, resisting both of their respective moves and only has to watch out switching into a Toxic from Magnezone, the lack of Heal Bell on Dragonite means you can fish for paralysis with Discharge.
:ferrothorn:: Ferrothorn just sits on Magnezone and can remove Multiscale both with Leech Seed or Knock Off, not much to say but effective in handling the pair defensively.
:quagsire:: With Unaware you completely sit on Dragonite and have the recovery when you get worn down and can switch into Magnezone's stabs, though you don't wanna switch into Toxic but besides that a great submission.

:premier ball: Additional Notes :premier ball:
:swampert::Swampert functions similar to Quagsire when it comes to being able to handle this core defensively, but the lack of recovery gives it issue in reliably switching in constantly and cannot the stat boosts from Dragonite.

Reserving SpD Gastrodon

Gastrodon @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Sticky Hold
EVs: 236 HP / 248 SpD / 24 Spe
Sassy Nature
- Earthquake
- Recover
- Clear Smog
- Scald / Toxic / Rock Slide

If Volcarona doesn't run Giga Drain, Gastrodon will just laugh at this core as they hopelessly struggle to get past it.
:volcarona: --> special bulk to eat psychic for days and resists flamethrower. clear smog removes every quiver dance boost. scald deals superreffective damage so it will force volcarona to roost way more than volcarona forces gastrodon to recover. The last slot may potentially be toxic or rock slide if you are paranoid, which put even more of a strain on volc.
:tapu fini: --> sticky hold blocks any trick shenanigans and gastro, again, has the special bulk to always switch in into tapu fini's weak, uninvested special attacks.
Other uses for Gastrodon: check to special attackers like pult, koko, heatran and glowking while still managing to handle zeraora nicely. clear smog acts as a safety net against grindy setup sweepers like cm reuni or hat (which is what those 24 spe evs are for) and even faster ones like the aforementioned volc, but also clef and fini, all of which tend to be troublesome for fatter builds. sticky hold makes it act like a trick absorber. at last, it can possibly help spreading status via scald burn or toxic.

:volcarona:
+1 16 SpA Volcarona Psychic vs. 236 HP / 248+ SpD Gastrodon: 105-124 (24.8 - 29.3%) -- 100% chance to 4HKO
+1 16 SpA Volcarona Bug Buzz vs. 236 HP / 248+ SpD Gastrodon: 157-186 (37.2 - 44%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
+1 16 SpA Volcarona Giga Drain vs. 236 HP / 248+ SpD Gastrodon: 348-412 (82.4 - 97.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+3 16 SpA Volcarona Psychic vs. 236 HP / 248+ SpD Gastrodon: 174-205 (41.2 - 48.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

0 Atk Gastrodon Rock Slide vs. 248 HP / 156 Def Volcarona: 216-256 (57.9 - 68.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
0 SpA Gastrodon Scald vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Volcarona: 156-186 (41.8 - 49.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
0 SpA Gastrodon Scald vs. +1 248 HP / 0 SpD Volcarona: 104-126 (27.8 - 33.7%) -- 0.2% chance to 3HKO
0 Atk Gastrodon Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 156 Def Volcarona: 106-126 (28.4 - 33.7%) -- 0.5% chance to 3HKO

scald deals ok damage to volc, rock slide predictably out-damages roost, plus volc can only harm it half-decently with bug buzz or just nail it with giga drain (then again, gastrodon lives one and can either toxic, clear smog or rock slide). volc most commonly run psychic anyway and that does negative damage.

:tapu fini:
0 SpA Tapu Fini Hydro Pump vs. 236 HP / 248+ SpD Gastrodon: 93-111 (22 - 26.3%) -- 9% chance to 4HKO
0 SpA Tapu Fini Surf vs. 236 HP / 248+ SpD Gastrodon: 76-91 (18 - 21.5%) -- possible 5HKO

0 Atk Gastrodon Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Tapu Fini: 82-97 (23.8 - 28.1%) -- 91.8% chance to 4HKO
0 SpA Gastrodon Clear Smog vs. 252 HP / 44 SpD Tapu Fini: 54-64 (15.6 - 18.6%) -- possible 6HKO (lol this calc is kinda cute)

You won't do much offensively, but scarf fini can't either and gastrodon has reliable recovery and can't be tricked.

Usually Volcarona can deal with Kartana for Tapu Fini, but this recent adaptation, designed to beat Buzzwole, also has the additional advantage of luring it in:

252 Atk Choice Band Kartana Aerial Ace vs 248 HP / 156 Def Volcarona: 290-342 (77.1 - 91.6%) - guaranteed 2HKO

This means it has no problem at all breaking it (while Volcarona can switch out into something that resists Flying, it is now in range of any move) and Kartana can easily OHKO Tapu Fini, and even can be an emergency switch-in if you are really desperate (Scald never 2HKOes, Surf has just a 1.4% chance to do so, and Moonblast 30.5%). Tapu Fini also helps it in part, since Flame Body can never burn Kartana in Misty Terrain.

This is just standard :Assault Vest: :Melmetal: , but with Rock Slide instead of Ice Punch/Earthquake (depending on your team). The concept is simple, :Volcarona: will take you as setup fodder, because you are setup fodder without Rock Slide. However, now you can surprise it, and the bug is down. Technically :Tapu-Fini: can trick you and then you'll lose the av, but that scenario is actually unlikely to happen, since fini is never coming in on you, and if it comes in safely just to trick you, you can kill it. And melm still has a nice chance of living +1flame after rocks, so I think you'll be fine.

Calcs -

+1 16 SpA Volcarona Flamethrower vs. 112 HP / 252+ SpD Assault Vest Melmetal: 240-284 (54.6 - 64.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

132 Atk Melmetal Rock Slide vs. 248 HP / 156 Def Volcarona: 376-444 (100.8 - 119%) -- guaranteed OHKO

+1 16 SpA Volcarona Flamethrower vs. 112 HP / 252+ SpD Melmetal: 360-426 (82 - 97%) -- 18.8% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
(If you get tricked)

0 SpA Tapu Fini Surf vs. 112 HP / 252+ SpD Melmetal: 88-105 (20 - 23.9%) -- 0.2% chance to 4HKO after Stealth Rock

132 Atk Iron Fist Melmetal Double Iron Bash (2 hits) vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Tapu Fini: 206-246 (60 - 71.7%) -- approx. 2HKO

My buddy eclipse originally made this pretty neat set to serve as a blanket check to specs pult and volc a few months back. But it fits here pretty well too, with fini lacking longevity and this version of clef not fearing trick it’s a great counter to both. Tricking/toxicing the volc is essentially crippling it. If your opponent tricked the scarf to your clef from fini? Even better for the volc.

0 SpA Tapu Fini Moonblast vs. 252 HP / 244+ SpD Clefable: 76-91 (19.2 - 23%) -- possible 5HKO

+1 16 SpA Volcarona Flamethrower vs. 252 HP / 244+ SpD Clefable: 148-175 (37.5 - 44.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
